The wait is now over…. SFNL Finals are here for all competitions! The SFNL SAS Security Finals Series kicked off last weekend for Division 3 and Thirds-Red where great crowds attended at Meade Reserve. This weekend Division 1, Division 2, Thirds-Blue and Under 19s Finals commence and we look to have another very exciting few weeks of football to watch.
Division 1 might be one of the most closely contested finals series we have seen in many years. I may have made a similar call this time last year however there have been some key matches of late that make me believe this. Dingley have had another brilliant season and deserve their minor premier status but can they go one step further? The recent form of East Brighton makes them a very close second but really there isn’t a lot between them and Dingley. East Malvern and Mordialloc had impressive seasons and inject a new flavour to the Division 1 competition. Congratulations must go to Mordialloc on making the finals in Division 1 after winning the premiership in Division 2 only twelve months ago. The late run from St Pauls just reminds us what a wonderful club they are, with their never say die attitude.
Division 2 appears to have two run away leaders in Oakleigh District and Keysborough and while they may appear to be the teams to beat, Murrumbeena, Skye and Caulfield have all shown they have what it takes to match it against the best. Special mention must go to Caulfield for beating the minor premiers in Oakleigh District last weekend in order to make the finals – an amazing effort!
Under 19s shows a very different looking ladder compared to previous seasons. Dingley earns another minor premiership but have St Kilda City that will be looking to challenge all the way to the big dance. Bentleigh have enjoyed another very good season of youth football and continue to lead the way in nurturing juniors through their club. It was fantastic to see Hampton and Oakleigh District having Under 19 teams in season 2015 but to make finals is wonderful achievement by both of these clubs.
Netball Grand Finals lived up to the expectation! An enormous crowd came out in full support last Saturday for the SFNL Netball Grand Finals. For the first time in league history, we had six grand finals across two timeslots.
It was fantastic to see all the club colours in the crowd and homemade signs supporting the teams.
In Division 1 Keysborough 38 although leading early, were defeated by Dingley 46.
In Division 2 Heatherton 29 were defeated by St Kilda City 30 with a goal on the siren!
In Division 3 it was goal for goal in the first half however Dingley 37 were defeated by Caulfield 54.
In Division 4 St Kilda City 29 were defeated by Heatherton 33.
In Division 5 in a fairly one-sided encounter Highett 54 defeated Mordialloc 23.
In Division 6 in what was maybe the grand final of the day Mount Waverley 31 were defeated by Dandenong 38.
Good luck to all football teams this weekend and we hope you enjoy your finals experience.

PLAYERS OF THE ROUND
THE BLK PLAYER OF THE ROUND WILL RECEIVE A BLK PACK.
Mitch Backman – East Brighton FC On an afternoon where hotly-contested footy, turnovers and plenty of stoppages were the order of the day, Backman stood out with his precise ball use. He hit up teammates by hand and foot time and again off half back, and looked to take the game on and move the ball quickly at every opportunity. Played in several positions throughout the year, Backman seems to have found his niche as a backman, providing drive out of defence with his poise under pressure. Congratulations Mitch.
Jake Chapman – Ashwood FC Chapman was simply electric – particularly early on in the contest – and was pivotal in Ashwood gaining the early ascendancy. To half time nobody on the ground was working harder than the elusive forward, who took countless lead-up marks on the wing and half forward and drove his side into attack. He also followed up his delivery inside 50 to effect the contest. Chapman also had his radar working, booting 4.1 including a ripper from the boundary to seal the victory. Congratulations Jake.

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTERWith most positions on the ladder already locked in, a couple of Round 18 matches effectively became dead rubbers. However, with several bottom-five sides keen to finish their year on a positive note, we again saw some unexpected results.
East Brighton consolidated second spot on the ladder with a comfortable 51-point victory over Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. The Bloods dictated the play in the first term, and two late goals saw them lead at the first change. But the Vampires had the game played on their terms in the second, and took control of the match with their dominance around the stoppages. As the game opened up in the second half the visitors were able to streak away with it, with Phil smith kicking five goals. Giant Vampire Hamish Dahl was named best afield after a dominant performance in the ruck, while Bloods duo James Morris and Matt Ravenall were solid in attack despite limited opportunities.
Meanwhile Dingley’s 10-goal win over East Malvern at Souter Oval saw them claim their second consecutive Division 1 minor premiership. The Dingoes were again red-hot from the outset, slamming home seven goals in a blistering opening quarter that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Ruckman Steve Gaertner was sublime for the winners with three goals, while Calhan McQueen booted five. Gaertner’s opposing ruckman Matt Terech was again named the Panthers’ best.
Cheltenham ended its 10-game losing streak in impressive style with a hard-earned eight-point win over Clayton. The Clays led for the entire first half before the Rosellas booted six of the first seven goals after the long break to regain control of the contest. Three final-term majors to Pat Nicholls (four for the match) were crucial in getting the home side over the line while Andy Dewar was also influential. Gaby Irons and dean Scanlon both starred for the Clays.
St Pauls claimed the bragging rights in the local derby after defeating Bentleigh by 27 points at Bentleigh Reserve. The Dogs were slow out of the blocks, allowing the home side to hold an advantage for much of the first half. But with Liam Wilson finding plenty of the ball and Nick Halliday dominant in the ruck, St Pauls banged on six goals in the premiership quarter to gain the ascendancy. Another five majors in the final term saw off the Demons, who were well served by Scott Lawry and Sam McGarry.
The final match of the round saw wooden-spooner Chelsea Heights upset St Kilda City by 41 points at Beazley Reserve in Phil Matheson’s 150th game. The sides could not be split as they entered the sheds for the main break, but a stunning third term that netted eight goals had the Heighters well on their way to their second victory of the year. Michael Shaw and Bryce Atherton were outstanding for Chelsea Heights, who end their difficult season on a positive note. Aaron Green was the Saints’ best.
And so the real stuff begins! After 18 gruelling rounds, the home and away season is finally done and dusted and with only the five best teams of 2015 remain in the competition.
Qualifying Final – Saturday 29th August
East Brighton vs East Malvern (Springvale Reserve) Both these sides have played some tremendous footy throughout the season and will open the 2015 SFNL SAS Security Finals Series with another cracking contest.
East Brighton have had the wood over the Panthers this season, claiming victory in the two matches between them so far this year. However, both encounters have been relatively close, with the games decided by sides 22 points in Round 13 and just one solitary behind in Round 4.
It would be safe to assume this game will follow the recent trend and be similarly close.
The Vampires have been missing some key players from their side in the last couple of weeks, including Damien Rayson, Dan Reid, Liam Bowman and David De Luca. With some, if not all of these blokes available this week, coach Ben Murphy may have a difficult night on the selection table.
Rayson in particular would be a tremendous addition to a first-rate midfield that is one of the best in the comp. A genuine goalkicking midfielder, he is the sort of player that can turn a game in a quarter. The Panthers would be well aware of this, given he was best afield in their last clash back in Round 13, so expect him to receive some close attention.
But the key battle will be in the air between two ruckman in scintillating form – Vampire Hamish Dahl and Panther Matt Terech. Both players do a mountain of work around the ground, but with East Brighton looking to create stoppages at every opportunity, whoever gives their midfielders first use out of the ruck will be crucial to their chances. In this endeavour the bigger-bodied Dahl will have the advantage.
The Vampires look to be peaking at the perfect time, so expect them to edge out East Malvern and book a date with the Dingoes next week.
Elimination Final – Sunday 30th August
St Pauls vs Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve) High stakes in this clash between fourth and fifth as for one of these sides there will be no next week.
And both these teams couldn’t enter this do-or-die battle in more different form.
St Pauls have emerged as a premiership threat after storming into the finals on the back of 10 wins from its last 11 matches – the only loss being a controversial one-point defeat to Clayton with a goal in the final few seconds. The Bloods, however, looked like finishing in the top three before dropping four of their last five games to limp into the finals.
Mordialloc will be bolstered by the return of coach Sam Anstey, who has missed weeks with a hamstring injury. His addition will add class to their midfield, which also boasts match-winners in Todd Bastion and Josh Kovarik.
The Dogs will be without young gun James Sziller, who will play in his junior team’s Grand Final on Sunday, but the likes of Brendan Dawes, Brad Gilder and the irrepressible Liam Wilson will help sway the game in their favour.
Springvale Reserve is a similar size and shape to the vast expanses of Mordi’s home deck, Ben Kavanagh Reserve, which will help their chances, but the burning question is whether or not the Bloods can arrest their worrying form slump. The Dogs, meanwhile, continue to defy the critics and go from strength to strength and should advance to the Semi Finals.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESDIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESCLAYTON The Clays finished off the home and away season with a trip to Cheltenham, but all our three sides played below par and we conceded the points in all three matches.
Lunico Hotel Senior Report Our Ones led by a couple of goals into the main break, but Cheltenham took control around the ground and held us goalless in the third quarter. We played into their hands a bit, continuously kicking high and indirect when we were being beaten in the aerial contests and that was enough to hand Cheltenham an 8-point win.
Coach Nick Scanlon was again Clayton’s most effective forward with 4. Gabby Irons was our best around the ground with his run and carry; Dean ‘Stoofa’ Scanlon, ‘Cooka’ Wilson and Cyril Wilson were four-quarter contributors - but we didn’t have enough of those.
State Gas Appliances Reserves Report Clayton’s Twos were playing to lock in our finals spot, but we let a winnable game slip as Cheltenham finished off better and took the win by 2 goals. Michael Wills dominated early for the Clays, kicking 4 first-half goals. In a tight match that was goal-for-goal all day, the efforts of Jordy Collins, Nick Parisi, Gerard Imbriano and Phil Kurth kept us in the hunt. But in the end our opponent was prepared to work harder to get numbers around the footy. Fortunately, Dingley did the right thing by us - beating East Malvern easily, so Clayton held our place in the finals by 38%. Good luck today boys. We know you’ll do us proud.
ABC Coins Thirds Report The Clays’ Thirds were short of players and Cheltenham, in a show of great sportsmanship kindly lent
us some so the game could proceed. They must have given us the wrong ones because the Clays led at the last change by three goals. But in a desperate last term, Chelt rallied and took the game by the smallest of margins. Nick Fallace kicked 4 goals and Shaun Hamilton 3 for the Clays. Trent Bowen and Brad Wotton were among our best.
With two of Clayton’s three footy sides in finals, and our Ones finishing a solid sixth on the ladder, it’s been a positive season in many ways - both on and off the field. In footy, as in life – “Success is the Journey”, and we’re confident the Clays are on their way to better days ahead. We look forward to the ongoing support of all our sponsors, members and supporters over the finals series and into 2016, as we build on our strengths and work our way further up the ladder.
CHELSEA HEIGHTS Round 18 – Congratulations to St Kilda City on their wins in the Reserves and Thirds games. What a way to finish off the year, by proving all the pundits wrong, and having a good win the main game. Last week’s notes I mentioned now was the time to start building for next season and beyond. The way these youngsters played, last Saturday, was a credit to them and the coaching staff. Even though some people don’t like the idea of Chelsea Heights playing in a lower Division, next year, we are looking forward to the challenge and the re-building that will occur with these young demons. In a couple of years we will be back as a “powerhouse” again.
The International game has been confirmed and Saturday 5 September is the appointed date. The game is scheduled to begin at 4.00pm and we are expecting a big crowd. Just a warning, don’t take this Japanese team for granted. We will need all hands on deck to help on the day and those players who are not selected to play are expected to support their Club. A lot of dignitaries will be in attendance and the club will showcase ourselves by way of the players, off field support and our supporters. POT has spoken to our local politicians and put a case forward for extra light towers etc.
As this was our last game, we would like to thank everyone who has helped us during the year, whether on or off field and this thanks includes our very loyal supporters. Stick around and look forward to a new and exciting era.
Annual General Meeting SUNDAY 18 OCTOBER – 10.00am START. Venue – Clubrooms.
Finals The Club is fortunate to have obtained gatekeeping duties at the League Finals Series. The club will be manning the gates at Heatherton (Division 3). The dates will be 29 & 30 August (7.30am – 3.20pm) and the Grand Final on September 12 (7.30am – 3.35pm). We will need every ones assistance on these days. The Club has also picked up the gate keeping
duties at Clayton, also Division 3, and we will be calling on everyone to make a commitment to help us meet our requirements. If you are asked to help, I would expect you to “do your bit ‘.

Volunteer(s) of the Week ALL OUR HELPERS AT THE FINALS.
“The Devils’ Advocate.” -
DINGLEY Congratulations to the Div 1 Netball on bringing home the first of hopefully many flags, and on their achievement in making it 3 in a row. We also have to mention the other 5 grades who all had fantastic seasons, with all the best and fairest celebrated in a function at the clubrooms last Sunday. On the same day, the supers rounded out their home and aways with a thrilling win, to make yet another of our teams on top of the ladder. As a result of that, there might be some time to mow lawns this Saturday, as only the Thirds are required to go into qualifying in the opening week of finals.
Speaking of finals, there was a distinct look of just that about our senior squad last week, with what the selectors believe is as close as we can get to our best team on the park. And they didn’t let us down, with an explosive opening blowing East Malvern away in the first 10 minutes. We finally got to see the real Steve Gaertner, Farmer was back in fine fettle, and McQueen’s purple patch shows no sign of waning. Jimmy Ball was probably close to best on, and the Lavars brothers did what they always do. We go into the playoffs in the same position as last year, although possibly a little more confident that we have got deficiencies better covered.

EAST BRIGHTON Under 19’s The season drew to a close with a competitive performance against Hallam. Great to have the Colts up and running and congratulations to all involved. Going forward there need to be an elevated level of commitment to improve in 2016. That level of commitment relates to doing the work required on the park during the week as the involvement in that area during the year could only be described as almost non-existent and it showed more and more as the season wore on. Clubs that did the work got better yet East Brighton probably went backwards.
Reserves There is a core of players that do their bit each week and can be commended for their level of intensity and their commitment to the cause. Then there is a group of ring ins that are hardly sighted other than on a Saturday. The time has come for a line in the sand to be drawn with the reserves group. Basically if you’re not fair dinkum then continue to play golf, have work commitments suddenly arise, go to the AFL or pretend to be injured but don’t bother if you are not fair dinkum (haha what am I saying?) about
training and playing consistently. Last week’s non-appearance was nothing short of embarrassing and an insult to those that have put their niagara’s on the line for the club all year. It’s a start from scratch for 2016 because, in reality, the rubbish that has been served up by this team in various guises over the past 20 years has reached it use by date. From a club point of view “we’re as mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore” There will be retention of some players but basically the bulk of the intransient can please themselves. Don’t expect a call! To Mordialloc and those that are fair dinkum sincere apologies!
Seniors Another slow start the Vampires started to employ the method that has made 4 consecutive Grand Finals a reality. Pressure went up significantly and errors forced upon the Mordialloc team. Defensive work stepped up a notch and the mid field started to exert influence the Bloods found hard to counter. 2 areas that were a blotch on an otherwise impressive win. Firstly, the slow starts that have been consistent all year will need to be put to bed. We’re in finals territory and should be experienced enough to know what is needed.
This team or at least most of it has played 5 consecutive finals series so it is nothing new but doesn’t offer any guarantees. Understandably, the team went into self-preservation mode in the final quarter. With 5 quality players on the sidelines last week selection will be tough and not everyone will be happy with it but is the first step in a quest to win another 3 games. Players need to understand that until the final 22 is picked all have the same opportunities. Grab it whilst it is there. East Malvern have had a good year but expect East Brighton to be the unsociable ones this Saturday.

ST PAULS
Seniors It was the local Derby between Doggies and Bentleigh. A large crowd was present and the sun was shining. First half saw Bentleigh jump away and use their home ground advantage to lock the Doggies out from scoring. Billy addressed the Players at the long break to change up our game plan and avoid the dead pocket we had been forced to play. 2nd half saw Jaz Allan move forward with immediate reward and 3 goals. Our back six started to get on top with Kieran Knox leading the way and Rucks, Nic Halliday and Ryan Kitchin, getting on top and giving first use to Liam Wilson, Harley Ambrose and James Bragagnolo. Doggies running away winners by 28 points and Kieran Knox best afield. This win putting Doggies 4th on ladder and meeting Mordialloc in first final.
Reserves It had been a struggle to get a team on the field each week this year and we again only had the 18. By half time we had a couple of injuries and the boys were out numbered and Bentleigh were well on top by 9 goals. To the players credit they battled on in the 2nd half and put a few goals on the board going down by 20 goals. Jack Kreymborg never stopped trying and was best afield with Mike Constantinou scoring 2 goals for the game. It has been a hard year for the players but they can look forward to supporting the seniors in finals.
U19s v Bentleigh The boys looked up and about knowing the importance of today’s game. Win and give ourselves a chance to play finals, loose and that’s the end of the year.
Though we kicked the first goal for the quarter, Bentleigh steadied, putting our defence under constant pressure. By the end of the quarter we trailed by 16pts.
Bentleigh got off to a flyer in the second, kicking the first major. It could of been worse if they were more accurate in front of goal. With Tim and Kyle getting us first use in the ruck we got back into the game kicking the last two goals. Margin at half time was 13 pts.
The pressure in the third was intense from both sides. Bentleigh again found some breathing space, kicking two goals to our one, to open up a 21 pt advantage going into the last.
With our season on the line, the boys responded, constantly driving the ball forward. Though we limited Bentleigh to one pt for the quarter, we squandered our chances, kicking 2 goals, 6 behinds to fall 4 pts short.

The 2015 Southern Football Netball League Division 2 home and away season is over and the top five is set for what will be a ripping finals series.
Centre-half-forward Anthony Ekberg Weiss kicked four goals in a stunning best on ground performance for Murrumbeena as it toppled Doveton by 106 points. The Beena never looked in doubt as they displayed offensive firepower in the win that saw them kick 13 goals in the second half. It was a disappointing end of the season for Doveton which will see it drop back down to Division 3. For Murrumbeena the stage is set for a Semi Finals match-up with Keysborough.
Caulfield sealed its place in the top five with an upset four-goal win over Oakleigh District. Adam Connell bagged five majors while Corey Barter was best on ground for the Bears as they broke away to a 15-point half time lead that was never relinquished. It was a must-win game for Caulfield while Oakleigh remains the minor premier despite the loss and will have the week off in the first week of finals.
Keysborough has ensured that it will go into its first finals campaign in winning form after a comfortable 36-point victory over Heatherton. The Tonners had the better of their opponents for the majority of the first half but the class of Keysborough shone through in the second half as they were able to retake the lead and break away for the win. Mathew Collett kicked five goals for the winners while Ryan Goodes was best on ground.
Hampton will miss out on the finals despite defeating Springvale Districts by 16 points away from home. The Hammers were well served by Scott Fiora with four goals while Matt Digby put in a best on ground performance. Hampton trailed by a point at half time but grinded out a victory in the second half thanks to some quality work around goals by Fiora. While Hampton will be disappointed about not making finals, it was able to finish the season on a good note.
Highett will finish 2015 on a high after an upset 12 point win over Skye in its final home game of the year. Yianni Pasialis booted four majors for the winners while Ary Friedman and Tom Brown were excellent around the ground as the Dogs had to overcome a stingy comeback from the Bombers in the third quarter to prevail with four final term goals to two to seal the victory. Skye remains in fourth spot despite the loss.
Finals are upon us and Cheltenham’s Jack Barker Oval will play host to five Division 2 sides aiming for premiership glory.
Qualifying Final – Saturday 29th August
Murrumbeena vs Keysborough This looms to be one of the most exciting finals clashes in the Southern Football Netball League as the defensive Murrumbeena take on newcomers Keysborough to see who will face Oakleigh Districts in a Semi Final. Both sides each have a victory against the other at home this season but at
the neutral venue that is Jack Barker Oval all bets are off and it could be anyone’s game.
Murrumbeena has relied on a strong defence all season and it was the key to its win over the Burra in Round 11. Dean Spanos is the player to watch for the Beena and is a dangerous commodity not only in the midfield but also up forward and works well alongside Anthony Ekberg-Weiss who has earned the ‘go-go gadget arms’ nickname this season for his ability to take contested marks.
Keysborough took two big hits with the injuries to power forward Tyson King and club stalwart Corey Wilkinson. Mat Collett and Davor Rajic have filled the void left by King admirably but will be tested by the defensive strength of Murrumbeena. Will Gayfer and Geoff Humphries are important key position players and playing coach Ryan Goodes will look to lead from the front.
The anticipation for this game is high amongst both sides and the score line will be close. Murrumbeena will go into the match as underdogs but there is something about them that makes me think it could pinch the win.
Murrumbeena by three points.
Elimination Final – Sunday 30th August
Skye vs Caulfield (Elimination Final) Have injuries finally taken its toll on Skye with its loss to Highett last week? Knowing the Bombers’ ability to bounce back into form quickly I doubt it and I’m looking forward to seeing them put their best foot forward on Sunday. Caulfield is no pushover however, and has played itself into good form the past several weeks.
Coach Ben Walker has been a star for Skye this season playing up forward and in the midfield, and has booted 37 goals for the year and will be the primary focal point on Sunday. The likes of Adam Beness, Aaron Harper and Jim Martinson will also be important in Skye gaining the upper hand against the Bears and taking out the win.
Caulfield has been up and down at times this season but showed its prowess in the win over Oakleigh last week with full forward Adam Connell in form with five goals. The big man has kicked 48 goals this season and has peaked at the right time for the Bears alongside Chris Lewis and fellow big man Adam Ballard who be vital for Caulfield to stave off finals elimination.
This game as all the markings of a classic finals encounter and both sides will be relying on the strength of their top-tier talent to get them over the line. Skye has been patchy at times this season but will go into the match as favourites and should get out on top.
Skye by 15 points.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTESMURRUMBEENAOn the Field The Beena boys went down to Doveton to take on the Eagles last Saturday. These were danger games for both the Murrumbeena sides because Doveton were playing to avoid relegation and they had pressed us earlier in the year.
In the Reserves the Murrumbeena “Magoos” had a real struggles with the Eagles. Beena were always in front in the game, but Doveton fought hard all the time. In the last quarter Beena pulled away to record a good win. This puts the reserves into the finals and the way they played last Saturday, we could do anything this week. Well done to the reserves. Some of the best players in an even performance were Josh Smith, Jack Brammer, Michael McMahon and the “Q Ball” Quenton Pongracz.
The last time Murrumbeena played Doveton in the Seniors, they got away with a 4 point win. Last Saturday, with third place to play for, the game was very different indeed. The Beena boys bounded out of the blocks and were all over the Eagles by quarter time. Doveton went in hard in the second quarter, but Murrumbeena edged further ahead. After half time Murrumbeena made sure that the third place was not going to slip. The fact that our boys kicked accurately made the job easier. With a 100 point win, Beena showed that they are a team to be reckoned with in the finals. Some of the Murrumbeena best players were Anthony Ekberg-Weiss, Alex Moloney and James Shirley.
Today we play finals. A whole new season starts. Good luck boys.
Off The Field A special thanks to all those who supported our “Pink Lady
Day”. With your help we raise nearly $1900 for Breast Cancer research. This was a great success. Thank you all.
Christmas Trees For Sale. The MFNC is having a Christmas Tree drive this year. Trees at great prices can be picked up from the club rooms on 29th November and 6th December. More details to come.

OAKLEIGH DISTRICT
On the Ground Not the way the Seniors wanted to finish its H & A season ,but the positives of the Two’s cementing 3rd spot and the Under 19’s making the finals in its first attempt certainly gave us something to smile about. Our finals campaign begins this week with the Two’s at Cheltenham on Saturday and the Under 19’s on Sunday at Springvale. Would be great to see a lot of Black and White support at both venues. Go Oaks

SFNL MEDIA DESKMILESTONE MAN
TALARICO CRACKS THE TON!
SFNL field umpire Peter Martin whistled up his 800th SFL/SESFL/ESCFA match last Sunday at Clayton.
Peter took up the whistle in 1979 after a car accident ended his playing career and he has been very active in umpiring both on and off the field over his 37 year career. He has served as President, Secretary or Treasurer of the Association on twelve occasions, has completed the hat-trick of major Association awards (Best Clubman, Most Dedicated, and the Graeme Bertram Award), was the SFL Achiever of the Year in 2008, and is an inaugural inductee into the SFNL Hall of Fame.
He is currently a member of the SFNL’s Football Operations Committee, where he is working to establish stronger links between SFNL Clubs and local secondary schools.
Peter has seen many changes in football since he umpired his first senior practice match at South Melbourne Districts back in 1979. The introduction of the two umpire system has led to the retention of many older umpires and has all but eliminated the biffo behind the play, while the order off rule has also helped clean up the game.
It has also allowed younger umpires to be eased into senior ranks by being mentored by a more experienced partner. Peter hopes that he has been a positive influence on the many umpires who he mentored early in their careers and
who ended up running senior SFNL finals, and even VFL and AFL games.
He is also impressed by the many young women who regularly umpire in the SFL, which has the highest proportion of female umpires in any open age comp in the country. Not only do the women hold their own against their male counterparts, says Peter, but their presence has also led to an improved standard of player behaviour.
A primary school principal, Peter sees many similarities between managing a class of students and controlling 36 footballers. It’s all to do with setting clear boundaries early on, being consistent and communicating well, he says.
Congratulations to Dingley’s Madison Talarico who has become the first SFNL player in 2015 to reach the magical 100-goal milestone.
The Under 19s goalkicking machine went into Round 18 on 93 goals, needing seven majors in the final match of the home and away season to crack the coveted triple-digit mark.
And the big fella delivered, snagging eight goals in the Dingoes’ 64-point victory over Oakleigh District at Souter Oval.
His final tally of 101 majors sees him claim the SFNL Under 19s goalkicking award ahead of St Kilda City sharpshooter
Xavier Pauli, who bagged 83 goals for the year. The third-placed Tyson Ross (Skye) finished on 38 goals, well behind the other two boys.
Talarico had a super-consistent year for the ladder-topping Dingoes. He was never held goalless and averaged 5.6 goals per game.
Remarkably, despite his tremendous form in front of the sticks, the spearhead failed to kick 10 goals or more in a single game. His biggest haul in a match was eight, a mark he reached on an impressive five occasions, including in the last two home and away games.
Congratulations Madison!

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Qualifying Final (Mount Waverley vs Moorabbin) In Saturday’s Qualifying Final, Mount Waverley was in ominous form and imposed itself on a determined, but outclassed Moorabbin. The Mountain Lions displayed their premiership credentials in a breathtaking 63-point victory. They marked strongly throughout the match and subjected Moorabbin to sustained pressure all over the ground.
Such was the dominance of Mount Waverley, it had 23 more scoring shots than its opponent. Were it not for Moorabbin’s impressive accuracy, the margin would have been far greater. The Kangaroos registered a solitary behind for the day to go with their 11 goals.
The return of ruckman Liep Kuel enabled the Kangaroos to get plenty of hitouts, but they were unable to take advantage of these as Mount Waverley dominated play for most of the day.
The third quarter proved decisive as the Mountain Lions turned a convincing 22-point half time lead into a daunting 45-point buffer at the last change.
Moorabbin enjoyed some early success, but a Luke Galle goal put the Mountain Lions in front close to time on in the first term.
They never surrendered the lead. Galle continued to menace the Kangaroos’ backmen and finished with five majors. He had abundant support, with 11 teammates kicking at least one goal each.
Mount Waverley’s Jarrod Wilkin was named the winner’s best player.
Matthew Johansson is a crucial part of the Moorabbin side and although he returned from injury for this match and kicked a couple of early goals, he struggled as the game progressed. He spent the last quarter on the sidelines.
The Kangaroos have a chance to bounce back against Ashwood in Sunday’s Semi Final.
Mount Waverley moves on to the challenge of playing minor premier Black Rock for a spot in the Grand Final.
Elimination Final (Carrum Patterson Lakes vs Ashwood) Ashwood played passionate, committed team football to dispatch Carrum Patterson Lakes from the finals. The Magpies won by 38 points, but the margin flattered the Lions who were comprehensively outplayed all over the ground for most of the match.
From the opening bounce Ashwood was switched on, although it took seven minutes to produce the game’s first goal. This came from the boot of Jeremy Nelson after he marked Jake Chapman’s pass.
It was surprising that when the quarter time siren sounded Ashwood had not added another goal. Despite looking the better team, it was six points down at the first break.
The Magpies didn’t allow missed opportunities to rattle them and led by 16 points after Nelson drilled another goal from a set shot after the half time siren. Earlier in the second term, Chapman produced a dazzling goal on the run.
Any thoughts that CPL would be able to lift its intensity after the long break were quickly dispelled as Ashwood scored a couple of quick goals. The Lions gave their supporters a glimmer of hope with the next two majors. However, by the end of the third term the
margin was 27 points in favour of the Magpies.
The Lions gathered in a tight bunch around coach Omar Ak at the three quarter time huddle. They managed the first goal of the final term through Steve Cormack, but Ashwood kicked the next three to stamp its authority on the game.
Chapman was superb all day and was selected as the player of the day by the radio commentary team. His teammate, Matt Maginnes marked strongly and cleared the ball impressively from half back. Ruckman Matthew Menzies also impressed, as did Jason Toan. But it was a committed team effort from all the Magpies.
Trevor March was a bright beacon on a disappointing day for CPL, adding four of the team’s nine goals.
The Lions were no doubt bitterly disappointed in their performance, but Ashwood deserves credit for delivering a lesson on the right way to play finals football. The Magpies have thrown their hat into the ring, showing they are right in the premiership race.
Second Semi Final – Saturday 29th August
Black Rock vs Mount Waverley (Ross Street Reserve) Mount Waverley and Black Rock meet in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Jets deserved to finish top of the ladder, but will be in for a stern test against a Mountain Lions’ team that was superb in its Qualifying Final.
Black Rock comes into this contest well rested after having the first week of the finals off. Teams coming off a bye often seem to take a while to get going, and the Jets must ensure this isn’t the case this week. It would be difficult to play catch up footy against such a high-quality opponent as Mount Waverley.
Prior to watching the first week of finals action, this tipster would have gone with Black Rock as the winner in this one, but the Mountain Lions commanded respect and it would not be a surprise to see them claim a narrow win.
First Semi Final – Sunday 30th August
Ashwood vs Moorabbin (Ross Street Reserve) Ashwood starts as a heavy favourite against Moorabbin in Sunday’s Semi Final clash. This seems a little strange considering that the Magpies finished a couple of rungs below the Kangaroos on the ladder.
However, the Magpies finished the home and away season strongly and started the finals in imposing fashion. They have an unbeaten record against the Kangaroos this season and gave them a twelve-goal thrashing in round 18.
Moorabbin would need a major turnaround in form after being outclassed by Mount Waverley in week one of the finals.
The Kangaroos were hurt by the absence of captain Matthew Johansson when they met Ashwood recently. Although he played in the Qualifying Final he was hampered by a leg problem.
A win by the Kangaroos this week will require a concerted team effort.
However, Ashwood’s Elimination Final display against CPL was an emphatic statement that the Magpies are a chance for the flag, and it is difficult to see the Kangaroos impeding their progress.

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESMOORABBINButcher Club Match report A very disappointing day. Full credit to Mount Waverley who were clearly too good on the day. In perfect conditions they were too big and
too strong. Our better players were Zee, Jay, Shauny, Aaron Bodin and Mark Russell .We look forward to responding well this Saturday against Ashwood.
We would like to acknowledge our sponsors Hardman Bros, The Butcher Club, Johnson
Painting Service, Marks 4WD Adaptors, Yellow Express, Buxton Hampton East Real Estate, TDT Driver, Training, Elg & Robinson, Boags, Brumby’s Moorabbin, Roy Higgins and Wylie Dalziel Racing, Group One Electrics Pty Ltd, Party Shop Highett, KFC Southland for their continued support throughout the year
MOUNT WAVERLEYNotting Hill Hotel Seniors Report Woweee what a game of footy! 35 scoring shots to 12, in the end we won by 63 pts off the back of a dominant 2nd half.
It was tight early, with our inaccuracies in front of goal and Moorabbin’s pressure; we led by 10 pts at qtr time and 22 pts at Half-Time.
We started to get on top of them with our run and carry, which opened them up and allowed us to start getting further away with our scoring.
Better players for the day were: Coach Jazz with his intercept and contested marking in defense was pivotal, Uncle Toby on the wing with his pace and kicking was spot on, Taz was at his usual tough best on the other wing taking big grabs and laying many tackles, Capt Mathers, Cliff & Cafundi worked really well together in
the middle winning multiple clearances and giving our forwards first use. The Black Prince & Beeza were all class in the ruck winning many taps and allowing our midfielders to get their hands on the ball, Leighthal was a bull in a china shop when he attacked the contest smashing all before him, all our forwards were dynamic and worked well together with The Vulture kicking 5, Fiddly with an electrifying 2, Minnerzzz with a classy 2.
The Better Rickard was awesome with his rebounding out of defense with his clever run & carry.
Overall was a great win and we can’t wait to face Black Rock!

Dp Constructions Netball Grandfinal Report What a grandfinal! The girls were trailing by 18
goals at 3 qtr time, to make a mighty comeback and lose by 7 goals.
Maddie was the general in defense with some awesome defensive work supported by her enforcer Ash. Zana, Lou, Emma & Frosty worked hard all day alternating at Centre & Wing attack/defense. They did some good quick passes and transition play.
Hannah, Amy & Lauren battled hard early in the game before getting on top in the last qtr with some pinpoint passes and shots on goal to reduce the margin.
The girls have had a great season as finishing as MINOR PREMIERS and Runners Up in the Grandfinal.
Very proud of your effort ladies!

SOUTH YARRA The Thirds were too good over Sandown whilst the Reserves had a rest in preparation of their Second Semi Final. Both the Reserves and Thirds are now into the Second Semi Final to be played on 29th August 2015 at Heatherton.
The Thirds All 4 Pets Report The Thirds played their first final, a qualifying final against Sandown. The Yarras finished third whereas Sandown finished second. The Yarras played the Cobras twice throughout the season and each team had one win.
The Yarras got off to a dream start all thanks to Cross who kicked the first goal of the finals series. Khoury was on fire, collecting possession at will across the wing. Knight kicked the second of the day and Sandown were left shell shocked. Khoury sustained a neck injury due to a stray bump from his opponent to his head jarring his neck at the end of the first quarter. There was a long quarter time break as the ambulance took Khoury to hospital. He is fine and hopes to be back on the field later in the finals series.
S. Jewell kicked the Yarra’s third at the start of the second quarter whilst Sandown were still goalless. The Yarras worked together, handballing amongst themselves to set up Cross for his second. The Yarras had a 26 point lead at half-time. The half time break only went for 5 minutes due to the time lost.
Bertone collected the ball outside the arc and snapped it for a beautiful goal in front of the Yarras
cheer squad giving the Yarras a 19 point lead. Cross
kicked his third, on the run and twenty metres from
goal. Shortly after, A. Evans took a grab and went
back thirty metres from goal, directly in front and
converted. Bertone crumbed in the forward line and
snagged another. A. Evans took a chest mark and
added to his tally. At three quarter time the Yarras
had a comfortable 31 point lead however, Saxby
encouraged his players to give more.
Hume took a juggling mark and went back, 50m out
and kicked it through the big sticks. Cameron had
18 players hanging off him but managed to take the
mark and goal.
The Yarras beat Sandown; 6-5-41 to 11-10-76. The
Yarras are now into the Second Semi Final at Ross
Street Reserve, Heatherton against the undefeated
Skye. First bounce is at 9:30am on 29th August 2015.
The Reserves The Tower Hotel Report
The Yarras had the week off and rested their tired
bodies in preparation for the Second Semi Final against
Endeavour Hills at Ross Street Reserve, Heatherton.

Doyle’s Bridge Hotel > Seniors: After finishing top of the table the Jets earned the first week of finals off to refresh the playing group & prepare on the track as we look forward to our match up this week V Mt Waverley, who had a very solid victory over the Kangas last week. Best of luck to the senior group as we aim to progress into the big dance, it will take an increased level of attitude, commitment & effort across the board against tough opposition.
Brighton TOYOTA > Reserves In a very high intensity game last week, we started well only to be wasteful in front of goal & apply crucial scoreboard pressure. We had a very high percentage of the play throughout the day but failed to capitalise our chances up forward, something I’m sure Johnno & the group will aim to rectify for this weekend’s cut throat encounter V CPL, better players on the day being Bowks, Patty & Big Party...
TWB > Thirds The boys battled hard in last weeks elimination V Keys, trailing at half time by 4 goals the boys clawed their way back into the game in the 3rd term but just ran out of legs in the last quarter, great games from Watto (6 goals), Tay & Micka with special mention to Hoggys goal of the year & ‘fist pump’ celebration. Overall a solid effort of the course of the year & great to see a heap of new faces into the club via our thirds, lets aim to build on that again next year & return to the finals in 2016.

ASHWOOD Langford Motor Trimmers Seniors Report The Seniors headed to Clayton for their sudden death final against CPL on Sunday.
Despite the loss of a few players including our skipper, the boys were up for the contest against a side who had defeated us twice throughout the season.
The first quarter was fast, tough & in close as both teams refused to give an inch. No real highlights just plenty of contests around the ground. We were a kick down at 1/4 time. The start of the 2nd was pretty much the same, but CPL managed to gain a bigger break courtesy of our indiscretion & a 50 metre penalty. From then on we gained the momentum getting those 2 goals back then getting another after the halftime siren to lead by 2 kicks.
In the 3rd we attacked the ball hard, with the CPL defenders feeling the wrath of one hard hitting forward as the on-ballers provided their mates down forward with plenty of opportunities.
The result was a 4 goal lead at the last change.
In the last CPL scored the first 2 goals to get the lead under 3 kicks, but to every players credit, we steadied & thwarted any other attacks they created. All 6 defenders worked as a cohesive unit repelling CPL’s attacks. The on-ballers were fantastic with their continual run & carry. Their delivery of the ball to the forwards gave us a chance to extend our lead to 5 goals. As the siren sounded, ‘The Creep’ was able to slot through another to cap off a great win.
Well done to everyone involved. Our hard work isn’t finished it’s just one step closer to our ultimate target. Would be great to see many of the Reserves players at training to support the Seniors this week. We are one. We are TEAM ASHWOOD!
Bar 9t4 Reserves Report We ventured to Meade Reserve to tackle CPL in the elimination round final. The ground was in good nick, the sun was shining and the feeling was good. The 1st half was a seesaw between the two sides with neither able to break away from each other. CPL was running hard with several break away’s, but the boys
rallied each time to gain control back and come in at half time 1 goal in front. The 3rd quarter saw us lose our focus and allowed CPL to gain an unassailable lead. Whilst it was a disappointing end to our season, all credit must go to all those individuals that played this year, because we made finals footy. With constant changes each week it was a testament to all that were able to achieve what we did. I know we say it each week, but to all the committee, staff and supporters who tirelessly get everyone up on the day, a huge thank you. Without your efforts we wouldn’t be the great club we are. Good luck to our Seniors in their finals campaign, we are right behind you. Well this humble reporter would have liked to have a few more weeks to espouse our teams’ efforts, but alas that will not happen this year. Stick around each other, enjoy your time off and lets all come back, bigger, brighter and better for next year’s assault at the flag.

Finals are upon us and this week’s results determined the fixtures for week one of the campaign. The Springvale Reserve will play host to a total of six matches over the course of the finals series and with this year’s league expansion including two more teams, finals placings subsequently increased to include five teams.
Bentleigh survived a huge scare from St Pauls on a cold Saturday morning at the Bentleigh Reserve where the Bulldogs – who trailed for most of the contest – were able to mount a significant challenge with a massive final quarter surge.
Despite having only kicked four goals to three quarter time, St Pauls needed to almost double their score in order to erode the margin. After bringing the score back to 48-40 with two early majors, the Bulldogs threw everything at the Demons with a 13-minute barrage of forward 50 entries only yielding four behinds. The scores didn’t change for the final two minutes as the Demons held on for an incredible four-point win which ultimately eliminated the Bulldogs from finals contention.
Meanwhile, Dingley’s 54-point win sealed the minor premiership and the added bonus of a week off as well as automatic entry into the Semi Finals. In the process, the result ensures both Bentleigh and St Kilda City will meet in the Qualifying Final.
Dingley’s opponents, Oakleigh District, maintained fifth place and earned a place in the Elimination Final against the Hammers.
Despite being dismantled by 117 points against the Saints, Hampton will need have the chance to improve their form and ultimately have to take the long route in order to earn premiership success.
Moreover, the following five sides will participate in the 2015 SFNL U19 Finals Series: Dingley, St Kilda City, Bentleigh, Hampton, and Oakleigh District.
Week One Fixtures:
Qualifying Final: St Kilda City vs Bentleigh
Elimination Final: Hampton vs Oakleigh District
Bye: Dingley
Aside from finals contenders, Hallam and Cheltenham both rounded out the season with convincing wins over East Brighton and Carrum by 56 and 85 points respectively. The four sides finished between positions 7-10 and will look to regroup heading in 2016.
Finally, Highett ended a tough season on a significant high with a 19-point win over Skye to register their first victory in their final game of the season. The side have been able to overcome significant changes in personnel over the course of the season to end on a fantastic note in what was the feel-good story of the round, and possibly the year.
Stay tuned for next week’s results as the long-awaited finals campaign commences and we’ll have all the results and predictions moving forward!

NETBALL: CENTRE PASS Division 1 – Bianca Bristow
Dingley are SFNL Netball premiers once again!
The Dingoes battled it out against SFNL newcomers Keysborough in the Division 1 decider, Dingley coming out on top 46 to 38 to claim their third consecutive premiership in a high-scoring and entertaining encounter.
In the first quarter Keysborough goal attack Laura Aguis shot the first goal, with amazing speed displayed by the Burra. Dingley were having trouble keeping the ball in their possession, which lead to Keysborough adding the next two goals.
With gritty determination Dingley managed to slow the game down to their pace, allowing them to lead by four goals at the end of the first quarter (15-11).
At the start of the second quarter Dingley managed to keep their focus, allowing them to dominate around the ball. This gave them an eight-point lead halfway through the quarter.
But Keysborough’s defenders, led by goal keeper Sarah Vella, started to pick up the defensive pressure in the goal circle and forced Dingley to turn over the ball, which lead Keysy to bring the deficit back to only five goals at the end of the second quarter (24 to 19).
No matter how hard Keysborough seemed to work, Dingley managed to keep the lead all the way through the third quarter. Dingley really got on top and pushed their lead out to seven goals (32 to 25) by the final change.
Despite Dingley’s dominance, Keysborough continued to push hard in the final quarter to narrow the margin. However, Dingley was unstoppable with amazing team work and communication they ran out eight-goal winners
Dingley captain Alecia Wise was crowned best on court after a dazzling performance at Goal Defence, and was instrumental in orchestrating her side’s three-peat, while Penny Byers-Tymms, Sophie Bartlett and Jess Payne contributed most of the Dingoes’ goals.
Division 2 – Bianca Bristow
In a fight to the very end, St Kilda City come out on top with a thrilling one-point win over Heatherton in the SFNL Netball Division 2 Grand Final.
The game started off with a bang as St Kilda City Goal Attack Simone Stuart shot the first goal of the match off Heatherton’s centre pass. The matched moved quickly with both sides fighting for the ball. However, the turn overs in the St Kilda City goal circle were disappointing and Goal Shooter Jaqueline Baker’s inaccuracy kept the Tunners in the contest. At the end of the first quarter St Kilda City were in the lead 10 goals to seven.
The second quarter started the same as the first with an impressive goal by the Saints. With both teams applying outstanding defensive pressure, it was easy to see how both teams made it to the Grand Final. Heatherton’s defensive pressure seemed to wane towards the end of the quarter
allowing, St Kilda City to lead by seven goal at the half.
The third quarter started with a massive energy boost from Heatherton; with accurate passes and foot work they managed to keep the ball in their possession. St Kilda City really struggled to keep the ball in the circle in this quarter as Heatherton’s defensive duo Belinda Kay and Kirsty Mann managed to get most of the rebounds from the net. The Tunners brought the difference back to two goals (21 to 19) at three quarter time, with St Kilda City just holding clinging to the lead.
The final term began with all guns blazing as both teams really fought hard for the win. With intense speed, the game became tied at 25-all half way through the quarter. Impressive pressure from Heatherton’s Goal Keeper Mann in particular ensured St Kilda City really struggled to shoot goals.
With less them a minute remaining in the game, both teams were locked at 29 apiece and game seemed headed for extra time. But St Kilda City managed to get possession of the ball and as the siren sounded GA Stuart shot the winning goal to give her team victory by the barest of margins 30 to 29.
Aside from being the winning-goal hero, Stuart was simply amazing for the Saints all day and won the best on court medal.
Division 3 – Will Hunter
Who says fairy tales don’t come true?
The Caulfield Bears provided the feel-good story of the year when they defeated the favoured Dingley 54-37 to claim the SFNL Netball Division 3 premiership.
The Bears scraped into the top four by the skin of their teeth (or 1.16% if we are going to put a number on it) in their maiden season in the SFNL
Netball competition, before sweeping all before them in the finals.
Up against the minor premier in Dingley in the decider – a side they hadn’t beaten all year – the Bears showed early they were up to the challenge. Both sides gave it their all in a wonderful display of netball and after an

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
NETBALL: CENTRE PASS NETBALL: CENTRE PASS entertaining opening quarter just one goal separated them.
The second term went much the same as the first, but the after half time the Bears really turned it on. The Dingley girls struggled to get the ball into their forward third as Brie Cooper, Samantha Tonkin and skipper Fotini Stavrou dominated possession in the mid-court.
While the Dingoes were starved of scoring opportunities, Caulfield had no such issues. The result was a stunning 15 goals to five, which gave the Bears an unassailable 42-27 lead at the final change and proved that the old ‘premiership quarter’ moniker is just as applicable to netball as it is synonymous with footy.
Another 12 goals to 10 in the final quarter sealed the deal for the Bears as they romped home to win by 17 goals.
Goal Attack Zina Teoh claimed the best on court medal after her sublime performance, while her partner in crime up front – superstar goal shooter Sophie O’Shea – was unstoppable with 44 goals. Defensive duo Gaby Coventry-Martini and Cara Teoh also played wonderfully for the winners and made life difficult for their Dingley opponents.
Dingoes goal shooter Alana Cooper netted 31 goals, while in defence Kasey Blizzard and Eleanor Douglas continued to fight to the end.
Division 4 – Will Hunter
Heatherton and St Kilda City are fast establishing a bitter rivalry as they clashed in their
second Grand Final on Saturday.
The Saints may
have pinched the silverwear with a buzzer-beating
in the Division 2 decider, but Heatherton reversed the result in Division 4 with stunning 33-29
come-from-behind upset.
St Kilda City had been the best side all season, entering the
Grand Final without a loss, and with a mammoth percentage of nearly 200% after the home and away season, they ranked as the most dominant team across all netball Divisions. But the Tunners weren’t daunted by the challenge.
The two teams were hard to separate in a terrific opening half. Nerves seemed to show through in the Saints camp early as they were slow out of the blocks, but 10 goals in the second half had them in front at the main break by the barest of margins.
But as expected the Saints pulled away in the third term. Their defence, led by the rock-solid Kate Cross, proved impenetrable and conceded a miserly five goals for the term, while they owned the ball in the mid-court through the efforts of Casie Beddome and Paisley Ross. By the end of the term they led a low-scoring contest 24-19 and, with all the momentum behind them, the cup looked destined for the Peanut Farm.
But it wasn’t to be as Heatherton dug deep and pulled off one of the most outstanding quarters of netball you’re likely to see. With captain Amy McManus and Adelaide Douglas on fire through the centre the Tunners dominated possession, and netted 14 goals to five to breeze past St Kilda City and steal the silverware.
Heatherton’s vice-captain and star defender Erin Naismith won the best of court medal after completely shutting out City’s dominant goal shooter Tui Bristowe, while teammates Brielle Arnfield and Isobel Burgess both did tremendous work in the circle and contributed the bulk of their side’s score.
Division 5 – Andrew Paloczi
Highett finished a memorable first season in the SFNL netball competition with a comprehensive 31-goal win over Mordialloc in the Division 5 Grand Final.
Steph Handson led the charge for the victorious Dogs, and was awarded the medal for the best player on court.
The Dogs came into the contest refreshed, having finished on top of the ladder, before winning their way straight through to the decider. The Bloods had to get there the hard way, getting the job done in a challenging Preliminary Final battle with Dingley.
With four games separating Highett and third-placed Mordialloc at the end
of the regular season, and a 13-goal win for the Dogs in the Round 8 clash between these
teams, it always shaped as a major challenge for the Bloods to turn things around. However, the extent of the margin was a surprise.
The one sour note for Highett was an ACL injury to captain Taylar Anderson.
Ironically, it was while recovering from knee surgery that now netball coordinator, Daniel Booth, took on the challenge of starting a netball side at Highett. The idea was raised by a friend of his and received the backing of club president, Lex
Marshall. Coach Tracey Flahive and Anderson assisted Booth in establishing the team.
Highett also fielded a division 6 team, which experienced finals action in its debut season. “Having two netball sides has been
great and adds a real buzz around the club,” said Booth.
In relation to the division 5
triumph he said, “It meant so
much to the club getting the premiership. It’s made a lot of off season
hard work really pay off.”
Division 6 – Andrew Paloczi
Dandenong took charge from the start of the division 6 Grand Final with the first five goals of the contest against Mount Waverley. The Mountain Lions managed to pull the deficit back to four goals by the end of the first quarter.
The Redlegs never looked like losing the game, although Mount Waverley refused to give up. By the conclusion of the third quarter, the margin blew out to 14 goals.
Dandenong suffered an injury early in the last term when vice-captain Corinne Pegram ruptured a ligament in her ankle. She had been playing very well throughout the game.
Mount Waverley then swept the ball down the other end and scored. However, any thought of a Mountain Lions’ comeback win was snuffed out as the Redlegs scored the next four goals, putting them in front by 17.
The Mountain Lions earned plenty of respect, eventually cutting Dandenong’s winning margin to just seven goals, with Mount Waverley managing the final eight scores in the contest.
For the Redlegs, it was a big turn around after losing to Mount Waverley by 10 goals when the sides met two weeks previously in a Semi Final battle.
Proud Dandenong playing coach Mandi Hall spoke of being offered the opportunity to establish a Redlegs netball team this season. “I jumped at the chance as netball was something I had believed the club needed for a few years,” she said.
After Hall accepted the offer of Dandenong president Ian Seagrim to take on a netball operations role, she got to work
building a team. “I found a group of nine girls who loved the game as much as I did and shared
my excitement in being a part of the inaugural netball team at Dandenong,” Hall said.
Hall added that the coaching role just seemed to happen and, although she embraced it, there were some nerves as she is used to coaching junior players.
The team combined well from early in the season, despite having only a couple of members
who had played together previously.
Come Grand Final day, changes were required to the team’s makeup due to illness, and Pegram was put in the circle. All team members played their role, including Hall who received the medal as best player on court.
Hall is grateful the club put their trust in her and the sport of netball. She is honoured to hold the role of captain.
Such is the
excitement after Dandenong’s first year of netball, Hall is keen to start a second team for the club next season and is already seeking expressions of interest from players and coaches.

UMPIRE’S CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHTCongratulations to everyone involved in organising last week’s last supper. Our clubrooms were packed, there was unlimited food (boundary umpires eat an awful lot!), and, with disposable plates and cutlery, cleaning up was easy, save for Rodd Johnson dropping a garbage bag of food scraps on the floor near the bar, and then having to put up with Scott Learmonth’s laughter as he cleaned up the mess. The only hiccup came early when John Borg and his cheque book were nowhere to be seen when our chef wanted payment for her meats and salads. Luckily, Borgie turned up in time to prevent her taking all the food back home again.
Most of our umpires consider a crowd of 200 at a game to be large, but Annie Mirabile had over 500 000 people watching her in the women’s match at Etihad two weeks ago. Her decisions have never been under such scrutiny before and she received considerable praise for her efforts. However, she came back to earth literally on her return to the SFNL this week, ending up on her derriere in the dust at Heatherton last week. Luckily for Annie, there are no slo-mo replays of the incident available.
The finals kicked off at Clayton last week and by all accounts our umpires performed very well. Johnny Huang showed great speed on the boundary, and has shed many kilos since he joined our group as a goal umpire, while Riley Webster impressed in his first ever final as a fieldie (Riley has several boundary appearances in finals to his name) showing great composure in pressure situations as well as reading the play like a veteran. He looks certain to follow in the footsteps of other former boundary umpires such as Andrew Scott, who have gravitated to the field with great distinction.
Riley shared his debut final with Peter Martin who was umpiring his 800th game in the SFL and its predecessor leagues. Peter had umpired his 799th
match at Highett the previous day, with Highett President Lex Marshall telling Peter that there would have been a bottle of Grange Hermitage for him, had he completed the milestone game at Highett. Peter has booked his 900th game at Turner Rd, and looks forward to sharing the red with Lex.
Congratulations to Nathan Guy who took home the SMJFL-SFNL Pathways Award at the SMFL awards night last week. Several of our umpires, including Molly Bowman, Paige Hinrichs, Erin Learmonth, Luke Porter field umpired in SFML Grand Finals last week, while a number of other SFL umpires including Thomas Grundy waved the flags (Thomas is umpiring as many games as possible at the moment as he sheds the extra kilos he picked up on his recent world tour!). Good luck to all SFL/SMJFL umpires who are doing Grand Finals this weekend.
Appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire in a Grand Final in Week 5 will be announced at the SFNL Umpiring Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held on Wednesday 16 September from 7pm on Wednesday September 16 at the Huntingdale Golf Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh. The cost of these functions is included in your membership fees. It is expected that all Umpires attend this function, whether you think that you will be umpiring a Grand Final or not. Awards for Best First Year (Field, Boundary, Goal), Most Improved (Field, Boundary, Goal) and Golden Whistle Award, together with Umpires Association Awards, will be announced.
Life Members of the Association who wish to attend the Appointments Night can do so at the discounted rate of $20 per head. They will need to email Peter Martin on [email protected] if they wish to attend.
