Texting, using a cell phone, eating or drinking, reading, using a GPS while driving can cause a distraction. Walk to Work Day in San Francisco

Today is walk to work day in San Francisco, sponsoredand promoted by “Walk SF.” I had the opportunity togreet members of the community at the kick off pointthis morning at 655 Clay Street. Supervisor Peskin, hisAide Sunny Angulo and I walked from Chinatown toCity Hall. It was a great walk to promote walking andpedestrian safety.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

In the United States in 2014, thousands were killed or injured in motor vehiclecollisions involving distracted driving. Texting, using a cell phone, eating or drinking,reading, using a GPS while driving can cause a distraction.

The San Francisco Police Department along with our Traffic Safety Partners, such asthe California Highway Patrol, are participating in the National Highway TrafficSafety Administrator’s 2016 National Distracted Driving Enforcement Campaign.

As a reminder, the use of a hand held telephone device while driving is prohibitedby the California Vehicle Code. A single violation for this offense in San Francisco is$162. No text message or Facebook post is worth injuring another person soplease keep this in mind and drive safely!

After being away for 6 days, I am grateful for the work of Lt. Molly Pengel whofilled in as the Acting Captain, and for the work performed by the Central StationOfficers. This afternoon, I am catching up on everything, returning emails and phonecalls, and reading 6 days of police reports.

Mercy High School

Just before Valentine’s Day, students of Ms. Cindy Ouares’ class sent dozens ofValentine’s Day cards to Central Station showing their appreciation for the workOfficers do on a daily basis.

Tomorrow I will visit with the students, thank them for their acknowledgement anddiscuss with them the role of a San Francisco Police Officer.

Definitions

Robbery – Robbery is the taking of property from another by using force or by using fear.

Assault – An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with the present ability, to commit a violent injuryon another person.

Battery - (Misdemeanor battery) is any willful and unlawful touching of another.(Felony battery) is the use of force or violence upon the person of another that causes

serious bodily injury.

*Assault is when a person swings their arm and battery is when that arm makes contact withanother person.

Aggravated Assault – Assault upon another person with a deadly weapon or instrument other than afirearm or by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Burglary – The intent upon entry into a property to commit grand theft, petty theft, or any felony.

Grand Theft – Grand theft is theft committed when the value of the money, labor, or property takenexceeds $950.

Petty Theft – Theft where the value of the property taken is less than $950.

1. How long have you lived in San Francisco?

I was born and raised in San Francisco.

2. What is your favorite thing about the Central District?

The energy. North Beach still have the feeling of an old San FranciscoNeighborhood. It reminds me of old San Francisco. You know everyone by namewhen walking around the neighborhood.

3. What is your connection or involvement with the Central District?

I was a former owner of Original Joe’s. I am the President of North Beach Neighborsand on the Board of Trustee of National Shrine of Saint of Assisi.

4. What are some of the significant changes that you have noticed in the CentralDistrict in the last 5 years?

Union Square has changed dramatically. Union Square was a special place to go,but it has changed. There’s a lot more traffic and congestion.

Each month Central Police Station features one

of its officers in an effort to learn more about the

men and women who police our neighborhood.

This month, we interviewed Officer Mark Milligan,

a 8-year member of Central Police Station.

Officer Mark Milligan was born in Maryland and moved into the Bay Area in 1976. He

attended high school in Walnut Creek and joined the Marines in 1989. After the Marines,

he went into the family plumbing business in San Francisco. In 2007, he joined the San

Francisco Police Academy. When he graduated from the Police Academy, he went to Mis-

sion Station for his field training. He was then assigned to Central Station in 2008 for his

probation and he remained at Central Station as his permanent station.

Officer Milligan is the housing officer at the Ping Yuen. As a housing officer, he walks thefoot beat through the Ping Yuen buildings, assisting the residents.
