Anintroductoryexaminationofdeviant(rule-breaking)behaviour:addictions,sexualdifferences—evenjaywalking!Weintroducedifferentdefinitionsandtheoriesofdeviance,suchasthefunctionalist(traditional)approach,labellingtheory(wherepeoplerespondtothelabelstheyreceive),andconflicttheory(whichemphasizesthestructureofsocietyasanimportantcomponentofdeviance).Wewillexploreassumptions,conceptsandpropositionsinanaccessiblemanner.Wewillalsoconsiderthecausesandconsequencesofdeviance.Somesocietiestreatdevianceveryseriously;othersocieties,includingCanada,areincreasinglytolerantofdifference.
