Sgoil Àraich & Sgoil Àraich Ghàidhlig
This term in nursery we have had a few new starts in both rooms and our children
have all settled back into the nursery routine. In the Gaelic room we have been
learning all about the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, learning the Gaelic
version of this story while the English room have been learning all about
Dinosaurs, much to
the delight of a
few of the
children. We have
all had fun
outdoors every day
in the muddy
puddles and are
learning all about
how the seasons
change as we
approach Winter.
On Tuesday 1
October we all
went out on the bus
for an exciting trip to the
Castle grounds! We had a fabulous morning with the perfect Autumn weather and
enjoyed running and playing together in the grounds, collecting all sorts of
exciting things and exploring different paths and areas where we think Goldilocks
and the dinosaurs might be living!

On Friday 4th October, we held our own wee Coffee Morning to raise some money
for Macmillan Cancer Support. We invited our families to come in and enjoy a cup
of tea and some lovely baking. The children made some cakes the day before for
the Coffee Morning. It was a lovely morning and we had lots of delicious baking
donated to us. We also had a visit from Mr Smith – Gaelic Singing teacher, who
along with the children sang some Gaelic songs to the Parents/ Grandparents who
came along! We raised an amazing £293.71, which included a generous donation
from Point Parent and Toddler group! We would like to say a big THANK YOU to
everyone for supporting our Coffee Morning - we appreciated all the donations
towards it.
Pictured below are some of the children from the Sgoil Àraich and Sgoil Àraich
Ghàidhlig who were recently lucky enough to receive two complimentary Ipads
from the Rudhach. The boys and girls and staff alike are very grateful for this
fabulous gift which will allow them to join in with the rest of the school using
their ipads to send updates to their families about their learning through an online
resource called SEESAW, which the rest of the school are already using. The
nursery are really excited about this new way of communicating with parents and
look forward to a new chapter in their nursery learning.

Ethan, Jack and the Hedgehogs / Ethan, Jack agus na Gràineagan
I went to my friend’s house for a sleepover. We were inside all day and got bored
so we went outside and by that time, it was already really dark. Therefore, I had
the idea to go looking for hedgehogs because they are
nocturnal and Jack, my friend, agreed. About 10
minutes later, we were on the road and I saw something
with lots of spikes. I told Jack and we went to go and
see what it was. It turns out it was a hedgehog on the
road. We did not know how to pick it up so we went and
got an adult but another adult saw us out of their
window. They came and picked it up for us. Jack and I
felt really happy because we helped save a hedgehog so
we decided to go try save more hedgehogs. We found
four more hedgehogs and two were on the road. In
total, we saved three hedgehogs.

Blysthwood Shoe Box Appeal / Bogsaichean Bhlythswood
Leaflets have been issued for the Blythswood Shoe Box Appeal. We haven’t been
given a return date yet but last year they were due at the beginning of November
and they can be handed in to the school at any time before that. As it can be
expensive to fill a shoe box, if you would like to donate an item to go into a shoe
box then these can also be handed in to the school at any time.

Feel Good Friday / Dihaoine Toilichte
In August we raised £78 and £99.34 in September for our School Fund from
Feel Good Friday. We thank you for your continued support in this fundraiser.
Summer Acivities 2019 / Gnìomhan Samhraidh 2019
The Educational Attainment Team provided Summer Activities during the
holidays. Stornoway Primary and Sgoil an Rubha children had a great time,
meeting new people and really getting involved in some interesting events. There
were archery classes, treasures hunts, museum visits and an excellent programme
organised with Pursuit Hebrides. The final trip to Ness, although a little damp,
certainly did nothing to dampen their spirits!
Spare Clothes / Aodach a Bharrachd
Both of the Nurseries and the school are looking for clothes for our spare clothes
boxes for changing wet or muddy children! We would be grateful if you have any
of the following clothes (boys & girls) that may be too small for your child:
Pants, socks, tights, trousers, skirts
The Nurseries are also looking for spare warm jackets.

Climate Change Protest / Gearan mu Atharrachaidhean Clìomaid
Inspired by the international movement, Global Strike, a group of Sgoil an Rubha
pupils protested outside the school, one morning in September. Lydia, Odhran,
Izzy and Esther joined forces to create some colourful banners to voice their
concerns about the future of the planet as parents arrived to drop off their
children at the school gates.
Odhran, Lydia, Esther and Izzy explained that they were impressed when they
saw older pupils raising their concerns in the Nicolson Institute and also wanted
to send a message to people in their community to reduce waste and raise
awareness.
Lydia sees global warming as the big issue her generation are going to have to deal
with in the future and would rather start to deal with it now rather than have to
panic later. Izzy concluded, reminding everyone that we only have one planet and
we have to take care of it.

shop by Friday 1 November.
Ceilidh Band / Còmhlan Ceilidh
On the 24th September Tuesday and the 25th September Wednesday, Georgia,
Lauren and Matthew went to the Lewis and Harris ceilidh band and we all got
together in the town hall and did a work shop with the Royal regiment band of
Scotland.
The band practised and played Amazing Grace and The Bays of Harris to prepare
for the performance in the Nicolson Institute.
Seats where full! Everyone had a good night and enjoyed the music that we
played.
All three of us enjoyed it and made lots of new friends. We were very tired after
from all the practise and work we put in to the performance. It was a great
opportunity for all three of us. by Georgia, Matthew and Lauren

Author Visit / Tadhal bho Ùghdar
To celebrate Maths Week, Kjartan Poskitt, author of the Murderous Maths
books, visited Lewis on Thursday 3rd October.
P5-7 went to Stornoway Primary School on the bus on Thursday the 3rd of
October to listen to the author of Murderous Maths, Kjartan Poskitt. He did
some tricks in maths and showed us a Powerpoint to explain his maths tricks. He
told us he wanted to be a comedian but became an author instead; he was very
funny and we were very entertained. He has been writing his books since 1999
that is 20 years now! We all enjoyed the show as it was very entertaining and
learned stuff about maths.

On Friday the 13th of September, we had a visit from local author Mr DS Murray.
He talked to each class from P2-P7 about ways in which they could improve their
creative writing. He told them all about some local sea birds and described how
he uses all his senses when writing stories. Some pupils also had a chance to
create their own story settings. We would like to thank Point and Sandwick Trust
for funding these workshops.
Dràma Saidheans, GM4-7
Air Diluain an 30mh den an t-Sultain 2019, thàinig dà dhuine mìorbhaileach dhan
sgoil airson drama a dhèanmah dhuinn. Bha an dràma gu math èibhinn agus
inntinneach. Bha tòrr fiosrachadh ann mu dheidhinn an t-saoghal agus ciamar bu
choir dhuinn ‘coimhead an deidh an t-saoghal.
Thoisich iad a’ cleachdadh am facal, ‘Sgleoc’ agus bha aig aon dhuine stad nuair a
thachradh sin. Bha e eibhinn. Aig deireadh an dràma bha againn gnìomhan èibhinn
a dhèanamh, abair spòrs!
A-nis, tha fios againn airson ath-chuairteachadh na’r beatha, abair

Roddy Read, a teacher at the Nicolson Institute and a local inventor, came to
P4/5 to share how he uses forces and magnets in his work.

“Roddy is an inventor and he was telling us about forces. I really enjoyed seeing
the huge battery and I loved the deadly magnets.” Grace P4/5
“Roddy made his own motor. He made it spin round really fast. It was so cool!”
