E very Summer I use this space to highlight a few interesting new books I’m reading. Since we are taking a trip

to Israel next summer, I’ve been reading a lot on Israel and one book in particular caught my attention. The Crisis of Zionism by Peter Beinart. From the moment of publication, it has dominated the American Jewish political discourse, though we Canadians should engage with it as well. The book argues that Israeli policies—chief among them the occupation of Palestinian lands—threaten the democratic character of Israel and the Zionist project in general. It is the responsibility of North American Jews to help change those policies.

Beinart makes the familiar case that continuing the occupation of Palestinian lands threatens Israel’s democracy. We must end the occupation and create a Palestinian State on most of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with a capital in East Jerusalem. According to Jason Zengerle of New York Magazine, the difference is Beinart believes that American Jews have both the power and the responsibility to help bring about a two-state solution, and Jews aren’t doing enough. “I think that the perspective of the mainstream Jewish organizational world today, which is essentially you support a two-state solution but you’re not willing to do anything to try to respond to settlement growth, is part of what’s leading us toward this sleepwalking toward the end of Israel as a democratic Jewish state,” Beinart says. I think whether we agree or disagree, it is a fascinating book.

Sitting on my bookshelf right now is a new book, just released called Superman: The High-Flying History of America’s Most Enduring Hero by Larry Tye. Seventy-five years after he came to life, Superman remains one of our most adored and enduring heroes.

However, behind the high-flying legend lays a true-to-life saga every bit as compelling.

During the depths of the Great Depression, two young Jewish boys, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, dreamed up a human-sized hero. He was everything his creators yearned to be: handsome, stalwart, and brave, able to protect the innocent, punish the wicked, save the day, and win the girl. Building on their Jewish background it is easy to see the similarities to Moses, saved from certain death at birth, fighting for justice, taking on evil leaders and with mysterious powers no one can understand. It was on Superman’s muscle-bound back that the comic book and very idea of the superhero took flight. If you love heros and Superman, you will love this book.

Most of us have heard, or read, or seen The Hunger Games. Although a book for young readers, I think it is a fascinating book for all because of the ethical decision making the lead character Katniss is forced into. The basic storyline is a group of teenagers, elected from their districts and forced to fight one another to the death until just one survives, for the benefit of TV watchers across the land. In Jewish history, we have often faced life- threatening dilemmas (from Roman Times to the Holocaust) and our tradition provides guidance for how to decide in life and death situations. There are occasions when one must take one’s own life to avoid killing another. Author Suzanne Collins provides a character who struggles mightily with surviving and avoiding murder and pushes the reader to consider these ethics and values, in even in a fictional world, which has elements of reality built right in.

Enjoy your summer reading and may your travels and adventures be sweet, healthy, and meaningful.

FROM OUR EDUCATOR: CHERYL WISE

E very year during the month of May we say goodbye to Religious School for the summer. However, a three

month break from our studies is a very long time. I urge you to take some ten minute breaks during all your summer fun to do some quick Hebrew reading refreshers with your child and maybe even do some learning for yourself.

When we return in September our Jewish calendar gives us many opportunities to celebrate and worship together during all of our Fall holidays. Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah begin

right away and the business of a new secular school year doesn’t often allow us the time to embrace the many wonderful learning opportunities that these holidays provide for us. Below are links to some interesting websites and crafts to learn about the High Holy Days, as well as some suggestions for summer reading.

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful days of summer and encourage you to open the doors to Jewish learning.

Some Parent-Friendly WebsitesPenina Levine Is a Hard-boiled Egg By Rebecca O’ConnellPenina levine has a bossy friend, a tattletale sister, crazy parents, and a big, fat zero on her school assignment to write a letter as the Easter Bunny. It was a stupid assignment, completely impossible, totally unfair. Penina’s never going to do it-not ever-and it’s no use telling her parents about it. They never listen to her anyway. But Penina’s grandmother does. Grandma doesn’t think Penina should do the assignment. It’s a matter of principle. It’s a matter of strength. It’s a matter of five thousand years of history and a couple dozen hard-boiled eggs. Also in the series: Penina Levine Is a Potato Pancake

Confessions of a Closet Catholic By Sarah Darer LittmanJustine silvers’s best friend, Mary Catherine McAllister, has given up chocolate for Lent, but Jussy doesn’t think God wants her to make that kind of sacrifice. So, she’s decided to give up being Jewish instead. Jussy’s bedroom closet has become her confessional, where she pours out her sins to her teddy bear and takes Communion using grape juice and matzo. But when her beloved grandmother, Bubbe, suffers a stroke, Jussy worries that her religious exploration is responsible. Worse, Jussy must suddenly contemplate life without Bubbe, the one person who seemed to understand her. Now Jussy feels she must decide once and for all who she is, and where she fits in.

We are commanded in the Torah to count the days from the second day of Passover until the Holiday of Shavuot – 7 weeks for a total of 49 days. It called the counting of the Omer. What is an Omer? An Omer is a unit of measure. In the days of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, an Omer of barley was cut from the fields and brought to the Temple as an offering. Since today we don’t bring sacrifices, instead during the counting of the Omer we recite a blessing and state the count of the Omer in both weeks and days. Therefore, on the 36th day, we would say, “Today is 36 days, which is 5 weeks and 1 day of the Omer.”

The 49th day is Shavuot – the holiday which commemorates the receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. It reminds us that the redemption from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah.

I love the tradition of counting, because it seems in life we are always counting down to something. When we’re younger we count down until our birthdays and summer vacation. When we are older, from what I hear at home, we count down until the mortgage is paid off. For HOOCHY we are all counting down to something different. Ben, Colin, Sofia, Erica and Elysia will be counting down until their grade eight graduation. Naomi and Marissa will be counting down until their high school graduation. The Tencers will be counting down until the three of them will all be in the same school together. Gena, Jacob and I are counting down the days to going to Camp George. We are all looking forward to something. When that certain thing is so important to you, you count down the days because you are overjoyed with anticipation and just can’t wait.

For Hoochy as a group, we have been counting down towards our many events. We started off our year welcoming in our new grade 8’s – Ben, Colin, Alysia, Erica

and, Sofia – and our new advisor, my sister Danie, with our annual kick-off BBQ, at the Mendes DaCostas (thanks Philip!). Some of the events that were planned for us were the limousine scavenger hunt around Oakville, a beach volleyball tournament to raise money for Sick Kids’ hospital, an interactive sushi lunch, HOOCHY Shabbat and our end of year BBQ at the Hamburgs (thanks Lynn and Jonathan).

Some of the other things we were up to this year were various NFTY events, helping the synagogue’s Social Action Committee to serve dinner at the Kerr St Ministries, and as President, I was able to attend the URJ Biennial in Washington DC. It was an amazing experience being part of the Biennial, especially as this was a record breaking event in terms of attendance, close to six thousand people. The energy was electrifying and the fact that President Barak Obama was the major keynote speaker that weekend didn’t

hoochY Youth GrouP

bY JuStin PolGar – co-PreSident

hurt… It was also a great opportunity to meet other Reform Jewish youth from around the world – at one dinner, at my table we had 2 Canadians, a girl from Rochester, a boy from Alaska and a girl from China.

On any given Wednesday evening, you can also see many of the members of HOOCHY at the synagogue, either helping to teach the younger grades, or having a class of our own with Rabbi Wise. This year’s theme with Rabbi Wise was Jewish Heroes. We focused on Jewish personalities from Sandy Koufax, to Anne Frank, to Woody Allen and Sacha Baron Cohen. We also had multiple speakers come in, including the Deputy Consul General of Israel, and two women living in dire poverty right here in Halton.

Now we don’t always count with numbers. We also count on people and we are counted upon. I have been counted upon to be president of HOOCHY. I need to be a role model, to help organize programs,

to go to events, to get other kids involved, and to go to board meetings. As a Jew, I am counted upon to be a role model in a not very Jewish society and demonstrate the morals we live by as a people. I’m also counted on in sports. With my teams in baseball hockey and football, I am counted on to play my best. In addition, there are many in my life who I count upon. I count upon my parents to organize my life, I count upon my teachers to teach me, I count on the rabbi to guide me spiritually and I count on my friends to have fun and hang out.

As a group, we need to count on each other as well. We count on each other to clean up our world, help others, honour our parents, teachers and elders, and teach others to do right. So count every day and make every day count. Thanks HOOCHY for a great year, looking forward to next year!

Rabbi Wise and Dani Polgar with the HOOCHY youth group in NYC – Emma, Jacob, Justin, Gena and Ben.

thiS haS been another verY buSY month for Social action at Sbe!

We held a joint social action “Mitzvah Day” with the Religious School on Sunday, May 13.  Activities included: a Clothing Drive for Safetynet Children and Youth Charity, a Book Drive for charities, sandwich making for Kerr Street Ministries after school programme, and spring clean-up and planting of the front gardens at SBE.  Thank you to all who donated  and/or  participated. A special “thank you” goes out to Sandra Gorlick for coordinating this event, and to Robert Reti for coordinating our gardening activities.

SBE had our own “group of seven” volunteers (including Rabbi Wise, and Ingrid) to form a “team” for Halton Habitat for Humanity’s Milton project on May 25. This was considered a good turnout, as the maximum number  allowed on a “team” was 8!  Our group worked diligently on the interior finishings of the home. Thank you to our participants and our donors for making this possible.

May 31 was another very special and memorable event for many social action volunteers from SBE.  We prepared and served a very special dinner to  65 patrons of the Kerr Street Ministries.  This event encompassed a lot of planning and preparation, and we had a wonderful team of about 15 SBE volunteers participating. Thanks to Marsha Davies for planning and executing this  event. Thank you Anna Houpt-Taylor; for coordinating the volunteer baking team at SBE.

The KSM patrons were served a beautiful meal of crudités, assorted breads, roasted chicken legs (with Marsha’s special seasoning), roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables, with watermelon and assorted “shul-made” cakes and cookies (Anna’s delicious recipes). We even had a “spring” theme, as the tables had checkered tablecloths, and potting plants were used as centrepieces, which patrons could take home to plant in their gardens (a special touch, thanks to Marsha).

This was a very heartwarming experience for all who participated, and it was very much appreciated by the patrons at KSM. The SBE Social Action fund sponsored this event. Thank you for your generous donations!

On June 10, SBE also participated in the Oakville community wide Food Drive coordinated by the Halton Interfaith Council.  Thank you to the volunteers who help distribute the bags and pamphlets to 100 homes near SBE, in the torrential rain – now that is dedication!

Thank you to those dedicated volunteers who came out on a Sunday morning to knock on doors and collect food donations for our community food banks. They need to replenishment for the summer.  This was a very worthwhile project, and it was a wonderful opportunity to partner with other faith groups for the good of our Oakville community. We collected three very full carloads of food, with so many bags, we could barely count them all!  The Food Drive was very successful; our volunteers saw the White Oaks High School parking lot covered by a sea of brown bags filled with food. This was a great idea, well orchestrated, and well received in the community.

It has been a very productive year of Social Action at SBE. Now, the Social Action committee is going to take a break for the summer. We will be having a planning meeting for next year’s projects, in the late summer.  New members are always welcome to join our committee or come to our meetings.
