TRAGEDY AND HOLINESSTRAGEDY AND HOLINESSTRAGEDY AND HOLINESSTRAGEDY AND HOLINESS

What can be said after a tragedy? Many look to Aharon in our Torah portion. He responds to the death of his two sons, Nadav v’Avihu, with silence. Sometimes, we don’t need words. Simply sharing the sadness, in a house of mourning or elsewhere, is all that is needed.

Yet, Moshe does share words with his brother. Few look to Moshe’s explanation for direction into how we comfort the bereaved. Moshe says, “This is what the LORD meant when He said: Through those near to Me I show Myself holy, and gain glory before all the people.” What kind of comfort is there for Aharon in Moshe saying that the justified death of the righteous somehow sanctifies God?

Our sages continue this eKort to find meaning in the death of Aharon’s sons. They suggest that Aharon’s sons brought a foreign fire into the Sanctuary; they entered inebriated; they decided law in place of Moshe and Aharon. These multiple explanations seek to justify God’s actions. Yet, they do not explain Moshe’s words.

Perhaps, we can glance into another window of explanation. SuKering generates a certain pathos. Stories of suKering spread virally, focusing attention upon a tragic sacrifice. These moments, of the unknown and the unanswerable, contain a window into God’s otherness and mystery.

We live today with an expectation – of a life journey with little suKering and few questions – except when tragedy strikes. We believe that God will operate based on our logic and our understanding of God’s rules. When tragedy strikes, we recognize how limited our appreciation for God really is. We call the recognition of our limitation and God’s power, kedusha. It is a small taste of the actual reality. This kedusha becomes most relevant during times of greatest questioning. Those of the highest standing provide us with greatest awareness of how little we understand. There is much more to say about tragedy – but so little that we can understand. As we glance at this window, on parshat shmini, let us appreciate what we can and cannot know.
