PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Jesse Shore

THE ETHICAL LIMITATIONS BEHIND THE ETHICAL LIMITATIONS BEHIND THE ETHICAL LIMITATIONS BEHIND THE ETHICAL LIMITATIONS BEHIND ““““WE, NOT MEWE, NOT MEWE, NOT MEWE, NOT ME””””

At the Toronto Jewish Community Q & A Zoom Session this past week, we learned that the Jewish community has taken a disproportionate blow from COVID-19. This was explained in part because we have a tendency to congregate, for obvious social and religious reasons. When the Mayor of New York tweeted against congregating during social distancing and mentioned the Jewish community in particular, since many Jews had broken social distancing rules, there was international outrage. To many, his comment smacks of anti-Semitism. To some, his comment was not as indicative of ill-will towards Jews as it was politically incorrect and a diplomatic blunder.

One way we might begin thinking about this is to explore the di*erences between a double standard and a higher standard. (In fact, this is one of Natan Sharansky’s litmus tests to decipher whether someone is being properly critical of Israel, or is really being anti-Semitic.) The less we expect of ourselves, and the more we are satisfied with being average, then the more averse we are to expectations that apply to us, but not to others as well. (An amusing inference of this logic is that any mitzvah that is unique to the Jewish people, all 606 of them, would be an “anti-Semitic” mitzvah!) Conversely, the more we hold ourselves to higher standards, the less we may be inclined to interpret the tweet as anti-Semitic; we Jews, who have a distinctive propensity to congregate, should be especially careful to observe social distancing, and this is our time to set a positive example. When am I just like everyone else, and when am I, as a Jew, not like everyone else. When can I no longer say “We, not me?”

Our parsha o*ers an answer. It contains the great mitzvah of Kiddush Hashem and the grave aveirah of Chillul Hashem. According to the Gemara in Brachot 21b and the Netziv (on Vayikra 22:32), this refers to public actions. The formal mode of sanctifying God’s name in public is through davening with a quorum. Now that we are unable to congregate, we have the opportunity to make a di*erent kind of Kiddush Hashem - by doing just the opposite of congregating!

The Rambam (Yesodei HaTorah 5:11) notes that these great or grave actions involve others making generalizations about the Jewish people. When we sanctify Hashem’s name as individuals, we make a general good impression for other Jews. The greater the responsibility of the individual, the greater the e*ect we have. Our communal leaders may at times insist on the ethic that “It is not me; it is we.” This can be understood as a gesture of humility or to emphasize shared, communal responsibility.

But we also hold our leaders to higher standards. Our capacity to sanctify or to profane Hashem’s name is an acknowledgement of the real power an individual has over others. Our capacity for greatness, to be held to higher standards, cannot be undermined by modesty. Conversely, the responsibility and culpability of our actions cannot be conveniently di*used onto others.

Rabbi Strauchler and Rabbi Shore will be conducting a community project to study all of Tanach. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail them at [email protected] or [email protected]. Rabbi Strauchler and Rabbi Shore will assign you a group of 5 chapters or more, and come up with a plan to help you study. To watch Rabbi Shore’s intro video go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSQ3hQPB1kQ&feature=youtu.be.

We will be partnering with 929929929929, a cutting-edge project dedicated to creating a global Jewish conversation around issues that unite and divide us, but always anchored in or inspired by Tanach. 929 invites Jews to read Tanach, one chapter a day, together with a website with creative readings and pluralistic interpretations, including audio and video, by a wide range of writers, artists, rabbis, educators, scholars, students and more. To learn more go to https://www.929.org.il/lang/en/today.
