In Parshat Ki Tetzei the Torah says: But the Lord, Your God, did not want to listen to Bilaam. So the Lord, your God, transformed the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord, your God, loves you. The difficulty with this Pasuk is that in Parshat Balak, we find no reference to a curse that ever leaves Bilaam’s lips. Balak, the King of Moav, wanted Bilaam to curse the Jews; but the only words that Bilaam actually utters are blessings. Taking note of this difficulty, Rabbi Yochanan in Masechet Sanhedrin (105b) teaches us: “From the blessings pronounced by that wicked man (Bilaam), you can deduce what was actually in his heart.” Perhaps the real danger is in fact Bilaam’s blessings. Praise can be given with two different intentions. I can give praise that encourages the recipient to strive and want to do better. Or I can give praise that causes the person to feel that s/he has no reason to work any harder. Psychologists today are concerned that in America we are raising a generation of over-indulged children. Although coming from noble and loving motivations, over-praise can backfire and make the child addicted to praise. It can give that child an unrealistic notion of his own capacity and talent, leading a child to reason that s/he does not need to strive for improvement; praise will be offered regardless. Bilaam as a prophet understood that praise can be extremely motivating or extremely harmful. His words were meant to lull Bnai Yisrael into a sense of complacency, with no accompanying call for improvement within Bilaam’s blessings. It is when people feel that there is nothing more to achieve that they are prone to complacency and failure. Moshe Rabbeinu was the greatest Jewish leader in history. And during his lifetime we do not find many instances in which he praises the people. On a few occasions, he defended Bnai Yisrael in the face of impending Divine punishment. More often he chastised the Jews, calling them “stiff-necked” and “rebellious.” It is only at the end of his life that Moshe offers blessings to each tribe as his last testament, in Parshat V’Zot Habracha. The true leader always wants better for his people, and therefore the bulk of his/her efforts is spent on getting them to realize their potential. Through his blessings, Bilaam was trying to convince B’nai Yisrael that they had already achieved far beyond what was to be expected. Inherent within Bilaam’s supposed blessing is the message that Bnai Yisrael were fine, even if they did not improve anymore, and even if they slacked off a bit. As we guard ourselves against the repercussions of over-praising we must be careful not to go to the other extreme. Recently, parents in Nashville Tennessee complained that schools were publicizing the names of students who made honor roll or attained other academic achievements. They were concerned that the publicity would harm the self-esteem of some of the non-honor students. A school attorney found an old Tennessee state law that prohibits the release of a student’s academic records without parental consent. In response, the schools stopped publicizing honor roll. One school refused to publicize the name of their Spelling Bee winner. A principal was not allowed to release the names of the high scorers from a school basketball game. In the end sanity prevailed, and Nashville schools once again publicize honor roll students - only now it is only with a parent’s permission. We must be on alert for excessive praise, but we should also be wary of any movement that seeks to either neutralize all achievements or ignore all of them equally. According to this philosophy, either everyone gets praised or nobody does. This is an incorrect and potentially dangerous attitude. As the story of Bilaam teaches, the way one praises/blesses others indicates our true feelings for that person. Let us be careful that our praise, for ourselves, our shul and each other, be heartfelt, realistic, and used as a motivation for reaching greater achievements.

BROTHERHOOD PARENTING TIP

Ten Guidelines for Healthy Discipline by Rabbi Shimon Gruen While it may be the least enjoyable part of parenting and educating, discipline and consequences are fundamental. A child who is not disciplined and never admonished will not only be less motivated to strive for more, but may actually sink from the level that he has already achieved. But the art of discipline is tricky. When done incorrectly it can leave lasting damaging effects. Criticizing a child the wrong way can hurt his self-esteem in the long run. These 10 guidelines are designed to foster healthy discipline and consequences. 1. Remember: Nobody is perfect When it comes to our own personal shortcomings we easily overlook or make excuses for our deficits, saying, “Nobody’s perfect!” Children are entitled to the same consideration. We need to temper our immediate reactions to their misbehavior with the knowledge that they’re not finished products. Keeping this in mind helps us be more forgiving and tailors our response to a more tempered and productive one.

ISRAEL UPDATE August 25, 2017

Secretary Tillerson: Iran “Must Leave” Syria and “Go Home” Recently, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned that Iranian forces in Syria “must leave and go home, whether those are Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces or paid militias…that Iran brought [from abroad].” The secretary touched on Iran’s role in destabilizing the region, saying, Iran is “persistent in [its] efforts to exert their influence across the Middle East,” and “it is our intent working with our allies in the region to push back on Iran’s expansionist efforts to destabilize areas, particularly Yemen, Iraq, [and] Syria, but we also see them in the theaters of Afghanistan.” Tillerson highlighted Iran’s “ongoing ballistic missile programs, [its] export of terrorism, [its] export of instability in Yemen, [and its] export of foreign fighters into Iraq and Syria.” Iran’s ballistic missile program, he noted, violates the “spirit of the [2015 nuclear] agreement.” President Trump has since signed into law The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which sanctions Iran for its regional aggression. D’var Torah : Rav James

This week’s Parsha contains numerous Mitzvot relating to a multitude of different things, yet sharing the themes of compassion and respect. One of the many Mitzvot found within the Parsha is that of Shiluach Haken, sending the mother bird away from her nest before taking her eggs or babies. When describing this Mitzva, the Torah uncharacteristically states that anyone who is careful to fulfill this seemingly easy Mitzva will be blessed with long life. The Gemara further points out that long life should not be translated as long life in this world but that anyone who keeps this Mitzva will be granted Arichat Yamim, eternal life, in the World to Come. Why would the Torah specifically single out this mitzva and describe its reward as that of long life? Rabbi David Tzvi Hoffman, in his writings on the Parsha points out that the Mitzva of honoring one's parents, also carries the same reward. Therefore he draws the conclusion that the Torah specifically wants us to compare these two Mitzvot. He further explains that there is a clear link between the compassion one must display for our own parents and the honor we must show a mother bird before taking away her children or her eggs. If we understand that we must honor an animal, such as the mother bird, we will understand the importance of respecting our parents, who nurture and sustain us on a daily basis. In Chorev, Rabbi Shimson Raphael Hirsch takes this analogy a step further, pointing out that the Torah allows and even encourages us to enjoy the world, with one restriction. We are commanded to make Brachot over this enjoyment. As such, a person is allowed to take and enjoy a bird's eggs but is first commanded to show respect for the mother. While the Mitzvot of Kibud Av Vaem and Shiluach Haken are logical, we must understand that we perform these Mitzvot because they were commanded by Hashem. It is for this reason that we are told the reward for these Mitzvot. The Torah is stressing that it is Hashem who rewards us for doing these logical Mitzvot. As Rashi points out, if the Torah rewards us for performing the seemingly easy (and logical) Mitzva of Shiluach Haken, certainly we will be rewarded for doing Mitzvot that are harder.
