Shackleton's AMAZING Endurance ExpeditionAntarctica is a great place to curl up with a good book.

I recently read the most wonderful book called Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage. It is a gripping

biographical account of Shackleton's harrowing failure of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

Shackleton attempted to lead a !-man crew across the entire Antarctic continent in "#"$

The book's title refers to the ship Shackleton used for the expedition% theEndurance. The ship was beset and

e&entually crushed by ice floes in the eddell Sea lea&ing the men stranded and wandering on the pack ice for

years.

The book follows their subse(uent struggle for sur&i&al and self-rescue. Two years later% the crew e&entually sailed in

a life boat o&er "))) miles to the nearby inhabited whaling island of South *eorge.

Shackleton did not lose a single man along the way.

Their entire +ourney thrilled me to my fingertips. These , men make ear *rylls look like a e&erly ills socialite.

/eople compare these guys to a modern day 0ed ull team. ut unlike today's adrenaline +unkies who perform

unnecessary% death-defying feats in order to get their rocks off% these men were T01E extremists.

a&ing li&ed on this harsh continent myself% I am inspired by their sur&i&alist spirit. They 2E3E0 ga&e up. Although

4c4urdo Station would be considered the absolute 5ap of 5uxury in "#"$% it is still a pain in the butt to li&e in

Antarctica.
