Sojourner; Help, Advocacy, Development, Education

History of SHADE! Established in 1999 by Tembo Kalenga, David Ilunga, and

Greg Andrews

! Began through the Woodstock Methodist Church and still maintains a strong bond

! Due to personal experiences of displacement, the vision of SHADE was born!

! By Linking with other displaced peoples in South Africa, the connections with the rest of the continent were made, creating SHADE’s Sister 2 Sister Project

! Because of the huge number of at-risk children around the area, SHADE began it’s youth program, Le Berceau (The Cradle)

! There are 16 Home Based Care programs in 16 African countries

Home Based Care

Maternity Clinics! SHADE defines maternity as the place

where life starts- in the real world! Life is very precious so we need to put

dignity back into the place where it begins

! In Africa, we have a very high mortality rate (especially for babies) because of a lack of proper health services

! There are plans for 4 maternities to be built in DRC, Namibia, Malawi, and Swaziland

Maternity Clinics

Orphans and ! There are millions of orphans and many

more vulnerable children due to poverty, war, and disease.

! Those children are in danger of being trafficked and sold for cheap labor, drugs, or sex

! SHADE believes that these children have the right to food, shelter, and an education

! SHADE supports 10,000 OVC in 20 African countries

OVC

Support Groups

! SHADE aims to ensure that the people we serve do not feel rejected and that they do not suffer alone

! Support groups will help them to find others who are sharing their pain; to help them uplift them and understand their current situation, give answers to their questions, and build hope for the future

! SHADE has 4 support groups– HIV positive women

– Orphans

– Vulnerable Children

– Women Working for Change

Support Groups

Counseling

! SHADE believes that there will be no future in Africa without psychological support

! The enormous crisis that Africa is facing today is that there is no hope for a better future- There is a way forward!

! SHADE has 8 counseling rooms-where people can go share their problems

Counseling

Small Business

! There is a big gap between the rich and poor in Africa- half of the population is below the poverty level

Refugee Program

Disaster Management

! In times of catastrophe and trauma we must comfort and protect the lives of people

! There must be a sense of order among the chaos

! SHADE provides disaster management workshops and basic needs to those who are suffering a disaster

! We also provide anger/stress management in these situations

Disaster Management

Women’s Tujenge (Let ! 67% of women in Africa are infected or

affected by HIV/AIDS because of lack of information, gender and cultural issues, and fear/silence

! SHADE provides training through education and empowerment for women from 20 African countries

! This international conference (Tujenge) is held annually with 5 days of training on various topics and themes

Including the Men

! The patriarchal system is still very powerful in the lives of the African people

! SHADE provides training for men in rural areas so that they can deal with the empowerment of the women as well as re-evaluating the beliefs about men’s roles in society

! This is also an international training on various themes to tackle many difficult issues

Youth Tujenge

! During the training of the women and men, SHADE also offers a training for the youth/children

! Because of their current situations, many children are forced to leave school and start work at a young age, or worse, to lead a life of crime

! SHADE believes that the hope for tomorrow is within the children

! Many topics are discussed in this international training in order to give the children a better sense of hope and to lead them in the right direction

Leadership Training

! The lack of leadership skills in Africa causes crises on many levels

! The systems of power corruption are reaching the undeveloped areas on this continent

! SHADE provides capacity building and training for satellite leaders to motivate them to lead from their heart

! A 5 day international training is held on different leadership topics that will help in the transformation of Africa

Education Programs

Literacy Program

! 4 out of 10 women and children are illiterate- this adds to the many reasons that women are seen as secondary citizens

! SHADE initiated a literacy program to offer women and children basic education

! SHADE is giving them a better understanding of the world and their current situation in order to help them move past it

Literacy Program

Life Skills Training

! Poverty is destroying the continent

! SHADE is empowering people to use the abilities that they have in order to put bread on the table

! SHADE is providing life skills training that will last for 6 months at a time so that the graduates will be useful to their community and have an increased sense of self-worth
