Veteran’s Day is November 14. Please remember all Veterans and their families for the sacrifices that are made daily for our freedom and safety. Thanksgiving is November 22. I wish everyone a wonderful time with family and friends on this day. Our Shag-a-Thon event was held on October 20 at The Revolution Darts and Billards in Centerville, VA. There were door prizes, a wine basket raffle (won by Pamela Alfano), food and adult beverages for sale, a nice dance floor, and music was provided by our club iPod PINK. Sherri Wildoner is still taking donations and the total amount raised will be announced in the near future. The fourth quarter General Membership Meeting was held at the Elk’s Lodge on October 24. Tom Brett, Chairman, Nominations and Election Committee, introduced the proposed slate of officers running for positions on the 2019 Board of Directors, Northern Virginia Shag Club. Tom thanked his committee members David Barna, Barbara Dent, Barbara Ebersole, Kathy Kropat, Paula Lantzer, Emily Maroon, Jason Potter, Jeanne Potter, and Jim Scanlon for their help in contacting members and providing the proposed slate of officers. A big THANK YOU goes out to Jim Scanlon for allowing us to have our Charity Wine Tasting at his house on October 28. Sherri Wildoner, Pamela Alfano, and Paula Lantzer did a fine job planning this event and we raised $640 for Capital Caring, our charity of choice. A good time was had by all. This year our Halloween Party will be on Thursday, November 1 at the American Legion in Vienna, VA. Each year the costumes are great and everyone has a good time. Pictures and recap will be provided in the December Shag Rag. Our annual election night will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at the Elk’s Lodge. NVSC members may vote by absentee ballot (included in this Shag Rag) OR in person at the Elk’s Lodge. Absentee ballots MUST be received prior to November 14 in order to be counted. If voting absentee, please write ELECTION or BALLOT on the outside of the envelope. A current membership is required in order to vote in this election. Please check out the candidate bios this Shag Rag. Our Holiday Party will be held on December 1 at the Kingstowne Snyder Community Center in Alexandria, VA. Mike Harding will be the DJ. Our Shag-a-Thon event was held on October 20at The Revolution Darts and Billards in Centerville,VA. There were door prizes, a wine basket raffle(won by Pamela Alfano), food and adultbeverages for sale, a nice dance floor,and music was provided by our clubiPod PINK. Sherri Wildoner isstill taking donations and thetotal amount raised will beannounced in the nearfuture.

It would be my honor to serveonce again as your NVSC VicePresident for 2019. As many ofyou know, I love dancing andespecially the shag. I’ve beenwith the club just over 5 yearsand am a dance committee team

member, the charity fundraising chairperson for the3rd year, the club secretary for 2017, and the VP forthis year. My travels as seeker of danceopportunities (aka road warrior) allows me to learnfrom other shag dance enthusiasts and how theirclubs function. I will continue to share ideasgathered from my travels with the board forconsideration for activities, operationalmodifications, updates and other such actions thatbenefit the NVSC membership and club goals.Thank you!

I respectfully request your vote forthe position of President,Northern Virginia Shag Club(NVSC) 2019. I have beendancing various dances for manydecades and Shag dancing is mymost favorite dance of all. I enjoy

the positiveness NVSC projects and the friendshipthat is evident whenever we are together for anytype of function. I enjoy sharing mylove/knowledge of the dance and informationabout NVSC with unwitting folks.

I am currently serving as President, NVSC. Iserved as Vice President, NVSC for two (2) years. Ialso served as Secretary, NVSC for two (2) years. Ihave served on the NVSC Nominating Committeethree (3) times. I have been the NVSCMembership Chair Person for seven (7) years now.I love this position plus I have the added benefit ofwelcoming new folks into our club. I handled thevendors at our 2013 20th Anniversary CapitalClassic plus the vendors for the 2014, 2015, 2016,2017, and 2018 Classics. I was honored to bechosen the NVSC Shagger of the Year for 2014. Ihelp manage the Front Desk on Wednesday nights.I have been a member of NVSC since 1998 with a5½ yr. break when I lived overseas. I have workedfor the Federal Government for 31 yrs. plus. Whilein college, I was Vice President, Treasurer, andSecretary of my sorority.

Since joining the NorthernVirginia Shag Club in 1996, Ihave served on the Board asPresident in 2002 and 2003,Vice President in 2001,Secretary in 1999, and Directorat large in 2000, 2007- 2009 and2014-2018. I have Chaired the

Search Committee, Fundraising Committee andDecorations Committee, co-chaired the 2008Capital Shag Classic, and 2009 and 2011 Shag-A-Thons. I have been an active member of the DanceCommittee since 1999, served as Dance CommitteeChair for the past several years, and on the DanceSubcommittee to assist in revising the danceinstruction program and manual. NVSC is a greatclub and an important part of my life. I am runningfor Director-At-Large so that I can continue to domy part to ensure that the Club continues to growand thrive.

Barbaraand I would like to thank Jack and Estelle Jones forintroducing us to shag music and I would like tocontinue the favor in introducing others to themusic.After a year of service this year as a Director, I willcontinue to work hard at growing our shag club, andbe an integral part of our management team.

My name is Ken Gibbs, and I amvolunteering to run again as adirector-at-large. I have been aNorthern Virginia Shag Clubmember for just over 3 years but Ihave been “Shagging” for over 25years. I moved to Atlanta around

1985 and joined the Atlanta Shag Club and startedtaking lessons from Jackie and Charlie. Since then, Ihave belonged to the Richmond and FredericksburgShag Clubs. I really enjoy all of our club activitiesand meeting all of the new friends in the club. I amnow “semi-retired” and have the time to devote tohelping with the many club activities. Thanks foryour support.

I am a retired Federal Govtemployee and worked as an ITmanager. My wife Estelle and Ihave been members of the club forabout 12 years. I enjoy helping outthe club and did serve as theWebmaster for the club’s website

for a few years. In addition, I first served on theboard as a Director at Large during 2012 and servedduring this past year. I would like to repeat thisexperience as a means to continue to support theclub goals and the preservation of the Carolina Shagdance.

On Sunday, October 28, we held our 3rd AnnualWine Tasting and what fun it was! Actually, it wasour 2nd Wine Tasting & Auction to benefit CapitalCaring. A special thank you to Jim Scanlon for onceagain opening his home to us for this fun social. Wehad a great group of folks come out on a beautifulday to enjoy fabulous appetizers and sample winesfrom Virginia, California, Spain, Argentina andother locales. The auction heated up toward the endand, thanks to the generosity of the crowd, weraised an additional $640 for Capital Caring —almost double what we did last year. Maybe weshould hold two over the course of the year nextyear?

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the20th Annual Shag-A-Thon held at RevolutionsSports Bar in Centreville, VA. We had about 30people in attendance. Donations at the door wereover $300 and the wine basket raffle made $195 forCapital Caring. The tallies are not in yet frommembers who gathered pledges, so we will post thetotals when collections are complete.

Special thanks to: Our champions of CapitalCaring that donated $50 or more, whether at theevent and/or as a pledge to one of our participants;all of our pledge participants; Paul Young and JackJones for figuring out the sound system and settingup the music; Bonnie Arms for ensuring I hadchange, raffle tickets, and other administrativesupplies; board members for door prizes; and to thecharity fundraising committee members: Sue Youngfor arranging the facility; Pamela Alfano for runningthe wine basket raffle; Paula Lantzer for helping outwherever needed.
