2014 Annual Report 3
From the PresidentI am proud to have completed my first year as President of the Shaker Schools Foundation. Working with the Foundation’s trustees, who are generous with both their time and resources, has been an honor. I look forward to my second year of service.
As a resident, member of the larger business community, and parent of three Shaker graduates, my expectations of the Shaker Heights City Schools are both personal and professional. My tenure as a trustee of the Shaker Schools Foundation has provided new reinforcement to my already positive opinion. I can state with certainty that the Shaker Schools offer an exceptional education to every child; our faculty, administrators, and staff are extraordinary; our students demonstrate limitless potential; and the Shaker Schools Foundation is a tremendous asset.
Guided by our mission and Strategic Plan, governed by our dedicated Board, and supported by our loyal and generous donors, the Shaker Schools Foundation continues to grow. Now in our 33rd year, the Foundation is a mature organization that is respected throughout the community and known for its contributions to the Shaker Schools. During the 2014 fiscal year, our assets continued to expand, and our independent audit
was clean. The Annual Fund raised nearly $120,000, and we contained our operating expenses to end with a surplus for the fifth consecutive year. From July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014, we focused on four broad goals: raise permanent, unrestricted endowment; increase the number of alumni donors; increase the Foundation’s visibility in the community; and increase the number of donors in Northeast Ohio. Elsewhere in
this Annual Report you will read the details of our progress, including the wonderful upgrade to the High School’s planetarium.
Thank you for your support! We are indebted to the alumni, parents, faculty, friends, and organizations that recognize the importance of giving generously so that teaching and learning will thrive in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Steven Goldfarb President Shaker Schools Foundation
Now in our 33rd year, the Foundation is a mature organization that is respected throughout the community and known for its contributions to the Shaker Schools.
4 Shaker Schools Foundation
During fiscal year 2014, the Foundation
was involved in a number of activities in
support of its mission to provide resources
to enrich the educational experience of
students of the Shaker Heights City School
District. And, we upheld our Strategic
Plan by continuing to attract permanent
unrestricted endowment, increasing the
Foundation’s visibility in the community,
serving our alumni, and encouraging
Northeast Ohioans to donate.

2014 Annual Report 5
• The planetarium at Shaker Heights High School received a technological makeover during summer 2013. Thanks to a partnership between the Shaker Schools Foundation and the Shaker Heights City School District, the planetarium was upgraded with a new star machine and all the technology to run it. Many thanks to the generous funders of this project: Huntington National Bank, the Arminius Foundation, Annual Fund donors to the Shaker Schools Foundation, and A Night for the Red & White. On October 10, 2013, the Foundation hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception for donors, complete with space ice cream and Tang!
• Representatives from Hennes Paynter presented a communications workshop to the Board of Trustees in early February 2014.
• On March 25, 2014, the Foundation hosted a second percussion concert organized by Shaker graduate, Luke Rinderknecht, and featuring Shaker students and two other professional musicians. Proceeds from the evening added $1,950 to the Charlotte Braverman Music Enrichment Fund.
• Projects supported by the Class of 1950/January 51 continue to be implemented. They include teacher creativity grants; fee subsidies for on-site Princeton Review courses for the PSAT, ACT, and SAT; and a six-week Summer Academy to help 25 incoming 9th graders have a good chance for success at the High School, and a three-week Summer Academy for the first cohort, who were incoming sophomores.
6 Shaker Schools Foundation
The Shaker Schools Foundation is grateful to these donors for their generous support of the Shaker Heights City Schools through gifts to the 2014 Annual Fund, 2014 A Night for the Red & White, Legacy Fund, and Auditorium Campaign, as well as special gifts, memorial gifts, and tribute gifts.

12 Shaker Schools Foundation
Annual proceeds from many of the Shaker Schools Foundation’s endowed funds support teacher grants that enrich the education of Shaker’s students. During the 2014 fiscal year, the Foundation distributed $11,228 in 23 enrichment grants to 49 teachers. Sample grants in elementary, middle, and high school buildings provided:
• Support of basic skills among Kindergarteners and their families at Fernway and Lomond elementary schools;
• Materials for musical and artistic pursuits in the K-4 buildings;
• Support for Woodbury’s school-wide social justice project, Woodbury Creating Change;
• Enhancement of a seventh grade science unit at Shaker Middle School;
• Continued expansion of the Learning Garden at Shaker Heights High School.
The Foundation also provided $196,990 in additional funds to support special projects such as master classes for voice and strings at the High School; the Summer Academy program for underachieving High School students, and the baseball team’s spring training trip to California. For the MAC Scholars Program, the Foundation raised $5,000 from the Harry K. Fox and Emma R. Fox Foundation and $2,500 from Key Foundation. The Foundation also helped raise $20,000 from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to support Summer Academy faculty and instructors.

The Friends of the Shaker Schools Foundation presented the twenty-second A Night for the Red & White on March 8, 2014, at the Tudor Arms Hotel, Doubletree by Hilton. More than 800 devoted friends of the Shaker Schools enjoyed a wonderful party. Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors, ticket buyers, and donors, the event raised more than $130,000 for the enhancement of technology, the arts, humanities, and health and fitness in each of the Shaker Heights City Schools.
This year’s party enjoyed the support of 25 generous sponsors. Very special thanks go to the Arminius Foundation, FirstMerit Bank, Forest City, Hahn Loeser and Parks LLP, Huntington Bank, and Tucker Ellis LLP, our Benefactors and most generous donors. We extend appreciation to the following Patrons, who give at the next highest level: Benesch, KeyBank, Penske Cleveland, Squire Patton Boggs, and Ulmer & Berne LLP.
The Foundation also is grateful to our Fellows: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Calvetta Brothers Floor Show, C.P. Braman & Co., Inc., DDR Corp, Ellen Seguin Design, Healthspan, Hogan Transportation, Legacy Capital Partners, Liberty Ford Solon, Neville Architects, Shout!, Thompson Hine, Thorman Petrov Griffin, and University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center.
As sponsors of the Shaker Schools Foundation, these organizations receive recognition at A Night for the Red & White and at Foundation events and in Foundation publications throughout the calendar year.
Many thanks and sincere congratulations to the volunteers who spent countless hours planning the 2014 event – and to the community for its dedicated and loyal support.
