Our search for shale-related news and industry information was initially directed at what was
happening in our own community in the Western North Dakota Bakken. We soon realized that shale-
related information was highly fragmented and hard to navigate. We started with the simple concept of
putting all relevant shale industry information into a comprehensive service.

Zach Koppang grew up with an insatiable curiosity for all things electrical and mechanical. Despite having a love for science and the physical mechanics of existence, Zach eventually decided to pursue his Bachelor’s degree in English with a mass communications emphasis at Minnesota State University at Moorhead, Minn. It was here that the pursuit of knowledge continued and where he was able to find and hone his ability to communicate his understanding of the world.

Zachary Toliver received his BA in Sociology and African American studies at Minnesota State University Moorhead. During his time there, he co-published a Sociology article for the Encyclopedia of Deviance with Dr. Joel Powell. He was also the recipient of the 2012 C. Wright Mills Sociological Imagination award and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2013.
