We near the close of an eventful year, and look forward to the Jewish New Year with hope and anticipation. As you know, for me this year was marked by more than the perennial battle for Ariel's success and integrity. It was a year that I will always remember as the battle for my life.

Before any talk of national or global issues I want to say thank you. Thank you to each and every one of my friends in Israel and around the world who prayed for my health and well-being. Thank you to the countless people who never met me, yet heard of the City of Ariel or about its mayor and added me

to their prayers. Thank you to the spiritual leaders who flew across the Atlantic to pray for me in my home, and to those in Israel who went out of their way to provide their personal support. I can tell you now in no uncertain terms that your thoughts, prayers and support have made a real difference. Thank G-d I am alive, well and cancer free. And it was your support that got me through this time. Thank you.

It's fascinating to see just how interconnected everything is. Many of our friends saw the video of the grand opening of the Ariel Regional Center for the Performing Arts -

Dear Friends,

3

an uplifting and even historic event, which was held on November 8, 2010 - only a few short hours after one of my chemotherapy sessions. I was released from the hospital and proceeded to one of the best celebrations of my life - the culmination of 20 years of building a regional hub for art and culture, here in the City of Ariel. Now, after months of enjoying countless performances and events at the new Center, I am always reminded of just how closely my personal triumph is connected with Ariel's continued success.

Of course, it is not only my personal connection to Ariel that makes a difference but it is your connection as well. The impact that you had on my well-being is a taste of the powerful impact that you can have on the City of Ariel. I write this to you on Rosh Hashanah Eve, a week after the long-dreaded Palestinian Authority's bid at the United Nations. I tell you now what I've said for months- the world will continue spinning on its axis and the City of Ariel will remain strong long after Abu Mazen visits the city of New York. Despite what the media wants you to think, reality is not something that disappears simply because someone wishes it away.

Interestingly enough, it is precisely this new development that works in Israel's favor. This unilateral UN bid undermines and essentially rejects the disastrous "land for war" agreements of the past, giving us a new opportunity to readdress the consistent faulty polices of the past decades. This of course is an invitation not only to Israel but also to all of our friends who proudly stand by our side. After all, in today's information age it is not only the policy makers who can impact the course of events, but it's largely

the information that they have available to them that informs their decisions. Of course, to get past the media bias we need a direct line of communication. Now is the time to make sure that everyone is connected to the City of Ariel.

Those who haven't been to Ariel need to come visit. Those who have been need to encourage others to come. As you know, a visit to Ariel is an eye opening experience unlike any other. I await the day when President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will see Ariel to gain some perspective on what they think they're talking about - but I'm not holding my breath. Instead, I'm waiting to see you, your friends and your affiliates here in Ariel with a radiating smile of satisfaction that says "this is Zionism. This is the rebirth of Biblical Israel".

Now is not the time to be intimidated by those who seek to challenge us. Now is the time to be proud of all that we have accomplished and, then, to share our success with whomever we come in contact with.

This past year was eventful. The coming year may very well be critical. We need to pool our resources to convey the simple message that Ariel is promising Israel's future. We will be vocal, we will be proud and we will be positive. We will work together hand in hand as we have until now. We've been together through thick and thin, and we have so much to show for it. Let's take the next step in unison, towards a year of blessing, happiness and good health.

Sincerely,Ron NachmanMayor of Ariel

After two decades in the making, the City of Ariel is proud to have opened the Ariel Regional Center for the Performing Arts (ARCPA), the long awaited state-of-the-art performance facility. As the only center for fine arts in the region, ARCPA’s fame has quickly spread. With 539 seats, a café, cocktail lobby, a community theater, and the most advanced equipment available, the Ariel Regional Center for the Performing Arts is being recognized as a true haven for the mind and the soul.

ACRPA provides convenient access to the best in Israeli theater, music, dance and the fine arts for the residents of Ariel, Samaria, the Benjamin Region and the Jordan Valley. The theater is committed to enhancing the populace of the region with a healthy and rich variety of cultural programs to enrich everyday life and serve as a firm foundation for a creative and productive society.

The Ariel Regional Center for the Performing Arts will be bringing many more high quality productions to Ariel and the region in the coming year, as its reputation spreads as a major venue for national and international theater companies, singers, musicians, orchestras, and other performers.

Ariel's firefighters are extraordinary people who go beyond the call of duty to care for the People of Ariel. The same is true of our friends from Faith Bible Chapel.

After the deadly fire that raged through the Carmel Forest during the Hanukah Holiday of 2010 everyone got the message: Israel's firefighters are insufficiently equipped. Ariel's firefighters went up north to do their part, and they returned exhausted and disheartened. They came in close contact with tragedy. Too close.

Our friends at Faith Bible Chapel responded swiftly to their call. They outfitted our firefighters with the modern equipment that they need, both for their personal well being and for more effective fire-fighting. On a subsequent trip to Ariel, Faith Bible Chapel made yet another contribution for new equipment. But that wasn't all.

One of the reasons that everyone loves our firefighters is that in addition to saving lives they feed the poor. Major Avner Mutsafi and his team established the Living Kindness Fund, which provides food packages to the needy on a regular basis. When Avner's pick-up truck comes rushing down the road you're never quite sure if he's going to put out flames or light up people's lives.

On their visit, Faith Bible Chapel made a gift to the Living Kindness Fund, providing school children with a years' worth of hot lunches. Whether for emergency situations or in cases of financial need, our firefighters and our friends have forged a powerful partnership.A

Ariel has been giving the city’s at-risk teens the opportunity to help provide the disabled with improved living conditions, allowing both groups to enhance their self-image and facilitate their integration in society.

Between Ariel’s Healing Hearts Project and ‘Good Deeds Day,’ a bridge has been built joining the city’s at-risk teens with the elderly and disabled.

After some 30 years of weathering and wear and tear, residences in the city’s oldest neighborhoods are showing their age and dilapidation. Due to insufficient personal resources and physical or emotional disabilities, some people living in these areas are too often incapable of basic home maintenance and repairs.

Enter the Healing Hearts Project and special occasions like ‘Good Deeds Day,’ which help to deliver a volunteer workforce that provides renovation services, free of charge.

Said one volunteer after giving a residence on Havradim Street a fresh coat of paint, “Working hard but feeling satisfied!”

The people of Ariel would like to thank our friends from Fairfield County, Connecticut for helping to bring this project to life. It's making a real difference, for those who receive and for those who give.

One good turn deserves another as Ariel scholarship recipients look to ply the trades afforded them by their educations back home in Ariel.

Each year American Friends of Ariel provides scholarships for qualified residents of Ariel who study for their bachelor degrees nationwide. This year, 15 students received scholarships after completing volunteer work in Ariel’s Department of Education and other community projects.

The scholarship ceremony took place in the Mayor’s Chambers on June 16, 2011, with various directors of the program each briefly addressing the group.

Mayor Ron Nachman spoke last, addressing each scholarship recipient personally. Before presenting the students with their scholarships, the mayor expressed the deeply-felt hope that, upon completing college, the young women and men would consider applying their new skill-sets back in their hometown of Ariel by assuming civil and professional positions in the city.

May each and every one of our students succeed during the course of their studies, and beyond.

For many of our guests, their visit with Irena and Kuba Vadislavsky is the most memorable and meaningful experience of their stay in Israel. Surprising as it may seem, it is often their first personal encounter with Holocaust survivors.

Irena and Kuba have dedicated the past decade to speaking on behalf of those whose voice is no longer heard. They've converted their home into Ariel's Holocaust and Heroism Memorial Museum, where they host groups day in and day out. Neither their personal well being nor their limited means are of any interest to them. They simply ask "what will be after us?"

The Vadislavsky's continue to work tirelessly to ensure that their museum undergoes the necessary transformations so that they will be able to preserve the artifacts and personal stories that they've culled over the past several years. Their revolutionary Youth Narrator's program and their hopes to renovate the museum give them a sense of hope for the future.

Irena and Kuba invite you to watch their story. For a free DVD please send your address to [email protected] with Holocaust Heroes in the subject line.

Interest in the Ariel National Leadership Development Center (ANLDC) continues to grow. The unprecedented and unparalleled course and curriculum are gaining both participants and prestige rapidly.

Beginning with the new school year, Israel’s Ministry of Education intends to bring between 7,000 and 10,000 of Israel's teens to Ariel to experience ANLDC's unique programming. In addition to the youth, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Israeli Police Force and additional emergency services units have come to Ariel to participate in the specially-developed leadership programs. The careful integration of physical challenges with the personal and group empowerment curriculum draws a wide variety of forward thinking and responsibility-oriented groups from all elements of Israeli society.

The Center’s reputation is also spreading abroad. Although intended to be a national site, which accentuates Ariel's role as a prime contributor to Israel's bright future, we are beginning to see signs of ANLDC's international potential. Youth leadership missions from such far away places as Ghana have visited, as well as Bar-Mitzvah groups and teen missions from the US. It's easy to get caught up in the growing excitement.

ANLDC participants learn about themselves as individuals and as productive team members. Their experiences at ANLDC prepare them to meet the challenges of tomorrow with knowledge, a clear sense of direction, and a drive to succeed. American Friends of Ariel thanks the countless people who have invested their time, personal resources and their prayers into the success of this spectacular endeavor. It's beginning to pay off.
