Vicar’s MessageVicar’s Message

Dearly beloved in Christ,

Greetings to you all in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

We are simply God’s servants, by whom you were led to believe. Each one of us does the work which God gave him/her to do; I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow… we are partners working together for God, as you are God’s field. (1Cor.3:5b-9;GNB)

At the very outset let me thank Almighty God for entrusting me the responsibility of North Mumbai Mar ThomaParish, Mulund, as the Vicar. Let us remember and thank all our Achens who have planted and watered our parish in the past years, especially, Rev.AbeyK.Joshua, who with his strong leadership and committed ministry led this parish in the path of our Lord, during last three years. I also would like to extend my sincere thanks to the beloved parishioners, especially the office bearers for all their services and co-operation in the growth of our parish and expect the same co-operation and generous support in the coming days.

Church as a body of Christ demands team ministry, co-operation and mutual nourishment. Each and every member of our parish has a role and responsibility towards the ministry of the Church which can only be achieved through active participation in the parish life. The people of God are called out as a community to engage in God’s ministry. The parish is not a place for a bunch of people, rather it is for the entire community. Hence I look forward for the active participation of each and every member, irrespective of age and walks of life, in the activities of our parish in coming days.

House visiting in various prayer group areashave started, but I feel it will take some more time to complete it. You are always welcome to the parsonage, which is your second home, and may feel free to share your happiness, sorrows and problems. We are always there to help you. As humble servants of God, our prayers are always with you and we also request you to please remember us in your prayers and keep in touch.

We are co-workers with God and partners in God’s field.

Yours in Christ’s love, Eapen Abraham achen [email protected]

From The Desk Of Chief Editor…

After three years I once again resume as the Editor of Shalom. The last three years Shalom continued its journey as a church bulletin aiming at outreach under the baton of Chief EditorThomas Mammen with major inputs from Abey Achen. It was smooth sailing with timely provision of all the Church information by Secretary Dr. P. C. Thomas and solid support of members Mrs. Sheela Abraham and Mrs. Mary George Varghese. Beautiful cover pages were designed by the Jiju, Rejo, Robin, Shina and Joe. Please pray for the entirely new Editorial team to bring out each bulletin filled with church information and aimed at spreading the Gospel.

I entreat parents to encourage their childrento providearticles, pictures, poems, stories, etc. to Shalom thus encouraging their creativity. Youths and elders can showcase their through this bulletin. I also request members of our parish to help meet the cost of this quarterly bulletin by donating through advertisements. Creative suggestions are always welcome to improve the contents of the bulletin.

We have bid a fond farewell to our former Vicar Abey Joshua Achen who was full of zest andl energy and was a capable leader of this Parish. We pray that God will continue to shower his blessings on him and his family granting them peace and good health while continuing in His ministry.

We welcome Eapen Abraham Achen and his family into our Parish and wish them a blessed stay while in Mumbai. In the short while that Achen has been here, he has displayed his leadership skills and spiritual erudition through his sermons. May God continue to bless him with health and spirit as he leads us through the next three years.

This issue is dedicated to the elders and to the students of this parish. The glory of the young may be their strength but the grey hair of experience is the splendor of the old. Wisdom belongs to the aged and understanding to the old. The Bible clearly says that God will not forsake anyone even when they are old and infirm and grey. God wants you to live these years of your life meaningfully by serving and glorifying the Lord in every way you can. The church continues to pray for its senior citizens many of whom have helped in establishing this church.

Another academic year begins and students and parents are busy adjusting to the new grades the students have gotten in. We wish you all the best for the course you are studying and pray for your success . But while educating yourselves, you must remember to love God and grow in submission to His Lordship. Going to Sunday School every Sunday and attending Bible studies and other similar activities will help you grow in wisdom and understanding.

We pray for the new Executive Committee that has taken charge of the next financial year and pray that God leads this team through a fruitful term in His glory.

Regards, Mathew Samuel

A FAREWELL TRIBUTE

To our former Vicar, Dear Abey Achen and family

Bible Study – June

Summary for Acts 1:1-8

The book of Acts was written by the same author who wrote the gospel of Luke. Luke was a physician as well as a good researcher. He has collected information from reliable sources and the usage of the word “we” indicates that he was also one of the eyewitnesses. Theophilus here, is not very well known, but he could be a Roman official or one of the Christian brethren.

The author clearly talks of the proof of Christ’s resurrection stating that there are many witnesses, including himself when Jesus appeared to them over a period of 40 days. Jesus commanded the disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they received the promised Holy Spirit.

The disciples after spending 3 1/2 years with Him, witnessing His wonderful works, listening to His teaching and seeing His death and resurrection, still did not fully understand his life’s purpose and

and asked if He would restore Israel.

Jesus tells them that only the Father knows the future and tells them to do their bit as they will become His witnesses in Jerusalem, all Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

- Tony Esau

Summary of Acts 1: 8-26

We see the disciples still in a dilemma, not understanding that Christ was talking about the spiri-tual kingdom and not restoration of the kingdom of Israel.

Later we see instructions given with respect to sharing the gospel from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria and then to the end of the earth and the ascension of Christ.

The disciples obeyed Jesus and returned to Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey.

The disciples consisted of eleven apostles and also included

the mother and brothers of Jesus and others adding upto 120.

What we notice next is that they spent their time in prayer, reading the Scriptures and fellowship, something that we should also emulate.

Peter stood up in their midst and told them that the prophecy of David was fulfilled that one in their number would have to be replaced (Psalm 69:25 and Psalm 109:8). Of the two men that were proposed, they chose Mattias after prayer and casting lots.

Summary of Acts 2: 1-13

The power of the Holy Spirit.

During the feast of the Pentecost, the Jews offered the first fruits of their wheat harvest.

The apostles were of one heart and one mind which is a lesson for us too. We need to be humble enough to accommodate each other

We need to be prepared to accept Christ as our Saviour.

The Holy Spirit was given from heaven to the disciples and they spoke in different tongues or languages that the Jews from different places could understand. The Holy Spirit works powerfully, for our salvation. It is compared to fire - for some it purifies, for others it represents judgement.

The Holy Spirit also sanctifies us.

When the Holy Spirit abides in us, we receive the gifts of the Spirit and also the fruit of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit helped the disciples and also us to proclaim the Gospel.

The people were astonished that the disciples could speak in different languages though many of them were rough, unschooled men and thought that they were drunk.

- Johann Mathew

Summary of Acts 2:14 - 21

Peter takes leadership in addressing the crowd. Peter who once was afraid

to acknowledge being associated with Jesus before the servant girl, boldly addresses the crowd because the Holy Spirit was upon him. Peter was very clear in his message and quotes scripture along with it i.e.Joel 2:28-32. It talks about the last days, or the days of the Messiah, from His birth till he comes back to establish his kingdom, the final and glorious day of the Lord. In those days, the Spirit will be poured out on all people, wonders will happen in the heaven above and earth below. Everyone who calls on the Lord will be saved.h The power of the Holy Spirit in the old times and now is the same. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to take full control in every area of our life .

- Anish John

Summary of Acts 2 : 22 - 28 1. Peter led by the Spirit, draws

the crowd’s attention for the second time about what he was going to say about the risen Saviour.

Logo of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church

The Logo of the Mar Thoma Syriann Church consists of a shield emblazoned with a Christian Cross with the representation of the Ashoka Chakra at its centre. It is flanked on the right and left by a Lotus and a Hand Lamp respectively.

The mottoLighted to Lighten is written in English above the Cross. The official colour of the logo is Red.

The Motto: The role of the Church is to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every believer and member of the Church, wherever they are given the light so that they can lighten others.

The Cross: The Cross placed in the Centre represents the centrality of Jesus Christ in the Church and its mission. It is a proclamation that God himself came and atoned for all human kind and the redemption is freely available by faith in Jesus Christ without regard to any form of Karma.

The Ashoka Chakra: The Ashoka Chakra is the symbol of India and represents the Indian

roots of the Church. Traditionally the Chakra as represented by the Emperor Ashoka, is a symbol of denoting the wheel of life and cosmic order (or Dharma Chakra). By placing the wheel at the heart of the Cross, it is a declaration that life finds its ultimate salvation in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus once and for all. It symbolized the completion and closing of the wheel of life for all those who follow the Bhakti Marga (Path of righteousness) in Jesus Christ.

TheHand Lamp: The Hand Land represents the lamp that is carried in all believers. It reminds all believers to be the right of the world and act as a witness to give the light of salvation for others in their daily life. It also seeks to remind to pay diligent attention to the study of the word of God.

The Lotus: The Lotus represents holy living and is traditionally part of the offering of sacrifices of praise and adoration in the Indian tradition of God. It reminds believers to live holy despite the circumstances around them and exude the fragrance of God.

This activity will be arranged on a public holiday, i.e., 25th August, 2017 which is a holiday for most of our members. Let us all join together to make it a memorable day.

OnE BODY

1 Cor. 12:12 says: “The body is a unit though it is made up of many partsand though all its parts are many they form one body,so it’s with Christ”

God has made each believer a part of one body. Our brothers and sisters inBhejgaonare part of the same body. And the Word says we need each other. 1 Cor.12:21: “The eye cannot say to the hand ‘I don’t need you’, and the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you’”.

Of course, it takes time and energy to get to know each other. But it’s not an option. We have to take time out to pray for them.Take the extra effort to get to know them personally.

Like the Apostle Paul shared, the human body functions as a single unit in spite of the variety of its parts. Each part has a distinct function that contributes to the well-being of the whole.

We are different in spiritual gifts, services, work functions, strengths and weaknesses... In our present mission work, differences existin the area of culture, language and socio-economic status. We bring these areas of difference into the Body. In Acts 6, we find arguments and accusations fed by inter-cultural differences in the 1st Church. It was mainly on how to put Jews and Gentiles together in the same fellowship.

Today, like back then, we too share differences of culture and

language with our fellow believers in Bhejgaon. However, these differences need not inhibit our human concern and Christian love for our fellow believers. We are connected to Bhejgaon through Christ, whether we have understood it fully or not. “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured every part rejoices with it”(Vs.26)

We have to identify the unique role that each of us is given in the Body of Christ, especially in the fellowship with our brothers and sisters at Bhejgaon. It is our duty and moral responsibility to uphold each other in Christ.

BHEJGAOn VBS REPORT

Date: June 9-11, 2017, Venue: Municipal School, Yejgaon

Bhejgaon in June, as anticipated, greeted the Mumbaikars with heat that tanned but winds that cooled.A team of eight volunteers, five from Mulund and three from the Nagpur parish, reached the venue on June 9, 2017.

VBS 2017 catered to kids from villages namely Bhejgaon, Yesgaon and Bothli. We went in expecting 35 children, only to realize that God had planned a surprise of over 50 children for us every single day of the VBS. Who doesn’t like surprises like these?

The main devotions were led by Evg. Gangaram and Evg. Hiraman. It was well prepared, concise and made relatable for the kids. The final day devotion was led by Evg. Gangaram. He spoke to kids with

Page 26: Shalom, July-September 2017 i - mulundmarthoma.church … · Shalom, July-September 2017 3 From The Desk Of Chief Editor… After three years I once again resume as the Editor of

24 Shalom, July-September 2017

reference to Job, explaining that we ought to accept everything that comes from the Lord, not just the good but everything. After all, He is good all the time. Classes were handled by Asmita, Evg. Hiraman, Evg.Vishal, Devidayal, Evg. Padmakar, Tripatand Sneha Philip. The volunteers assisted in the singing sessions as well as conducted several theme based activities and group games each day.

Striking moments of this VBS were, the energy and the urge in the kids to learn, sing and praise. As the vehicles we travelled in, neared the school where the VBS was held, the children would rush inside the classroom, without anyone having to tell them to. It didn’t end with them sitting in order. They would start singing themselves!

We went to lead the singing and there they were, leading us into worship. Song after song, action after action, the energy didn’t

drop a bit. Their enthusiasm left us speechless, but motivated to sing for the Lord. The VBS ended on a promise that was engraved on the hearts of the little ones - “Who shall separate us from the love of God? Nothing at all.” (Romans 8:35)

A common chord that struck all the volunteers was the longing amongst children to learn about Christ. Challenging each of us to inspect our lives to renew our commitment and accountability to the Lord, whom we owe our lives, our all.

We live in concrete towers with busy work schedules often unaware of the subtlety of God’s working in the lives of many around us. Vidharbha proclaims louder than before “He is at work here!

May we not be driven by the world’s distractions, but use this as an opportunity to make ourselves available to be touched and used by the Lord.

Vimlabai’s prayer lifeWe praise God for the life of Vimlabai Mohurle. She was suffering from severe swelling in her feet for a while making it difficult for her to even walk. But as is her wont, in everything she first brings it to the Lord in prayer. Through fasting and prayer, the Lord healed her. We thank the Lord that Vimlabai’s life is a life of prayer. She constantly encourages one another with her testimony and lives a life of dependence on God.

Bhejgaon’s praying church

Girimaji Wadai is a dear brother in Christ for whom we thank our God. He was down with high fever for several days despite treatment. Realising there was no improvement even after 10 days, the church met that evening to pray for him. The Lord heard our prayer and answered it immediately. The fever left and Girimajifelt fit to resume his work the very next

Testimonies from the Mission Field (As narrated By Evg. Gangaram):

day. We praise Him who gives us our health!

Land Development Related Update:1. We praise God that the borewell

drilling was completed on May 30, 2017 morning. The pipe was laid at a depth of 70 feet.

2. The MSEB is expected to identify soon the point from which electrical line will enter the land. As soon as it’s done, a protective shed will be constructed to install the electricity meter box.

3. As per the decision of the AGM held on 12.6.17, the evangelist’s quarters (or Mission House) will be constructed in the first phase in a manner so as to accommodate about 25-30 people in the living room during prayer meetings or worship. And a separate self-contained guest room. The rest of the plan will be taken up after the status ofthe land is convertedto N.A. (Non-Agricultural) use.

One day, Jesus and the Devil were having a discussion about who was best, so God suggested a typing competition. So God sat them down at two computers, one each, and told them to type up an article written on a piece of paper. The first to complete the typing would win.

Anyway, both Jesus and the Devil were typing away frantically, when there was a power cut and both computers switched off. Their typing work had disappeared from the two screens.

When the power was restored, and the computers re-booted, Jesus's work re-appeared on his screen, but the Devil could get nothing back and had lost all his work. So Jesus was declared the winner. The Devil complained bitterly to God saying that it wasn't fair at all and demanded a rematch, but God said,

"Stop whinging Satan, you know why Jesus got his work back - every one knows "JESUS SAVES!"
