amidst one of the largest and most attractive campuses in the world. Indeed the moment you

When you choose Wellington College, you will enter Shanghai’s most forward-thinking and
innovative school. Few schools, anywhere in the world, possess the heritage of the tight-knit
Wellington community of schools. The first Chinese Wellington opened its doors in Tianjin in
August 2011 and we have established the closest possible links with our sister school just five
hours away by rail. Rather further afield, some six thousand miles to the west, is Wellington
College in the UK, a school steeped in heritage and tradition, and our erstwhile partner, in a
relationship that is already the envy of many other rather less effective partnerships. We share
our not-for-profit status and no opportunity is lost to develop further the links between the
Wellington Colleges.

The fact that Wellington College in Shanghai looks just like its counterpart in England is a sign
of intent. What you get in Wellington UK is what you get here in Shanghai, whether you come
as a boarder or a day pupil, or in the pre-prep, prep, or senior school. Wellington is also a
royal foundation. The College was originally founded by Queen Victoria in 1859 as the national
memorial to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, Britain’s outstanding military leader in
the Napoleonic Wars, and immortalised as the victor at Waterloo in 1815.
In recent years Wellington College in the UK has gained a deserved reputation for being at the
forefront of educational thinking and innovation, in particular developing a greater all-round
approach to education. This means educating a child for life, and developing their ‘intelligence’
in the broadest possible way. All our pupils have ‘multiple’ intelligences, where their ability in
each particular intelligence is different. So for each individual we have to adopt a unique blend
of learning and teaching to bring out the very best in Wellingtonians.
We at Wellington in Shanghai have adopted the same approach to the challenges of 21st-
century education. We aim to nurture and develop the Eight Aptitudes, or intelligences, that
lie within each pupil. They are: Linguistic and Logical; Social and Personal; Cultural and Physical;
Moral and Spiritual. For too long schools have concentrated on a narrow range of aptitudes,
such as the linguistic and logical, while lessening the importance of the others, where skill and
expertise can be demonstrated and developed. Put simply, it is a challenge of “Don’t ask how
intelligent your child is. Ask in what way are they intelligent.”
Educating children is one of the greatest responsibilities in life, and all of us in the Wellington
community, whether in China or the UK, see it as an honour and a privilege.

the Eight AptitudesThe Eight Aptitudes, originally conceived by Professor
Howard Gardner at Harvard , provides a forward-thinking
framework to learning both within the classroom and outside
of it. In identifying eight separate intelligences, the learning
process can be expanded from the more traditional logical
and linguistic learning into a well-rounded, holistic education.
In this way we can understand better an individual’s strengths
and weaknesses, so that personal development can guided
and stimulated in a fashion unique to that individual.
Words, spoken or written, in English,
Mandarin and other modern languages are
a cornerstone of a Wellington education.
We want our pupils, irrespective of their
age, to develop a love of reading, leading
to effective creative writing, good note-
taking, diligent analysis, development
of debating skills, and the thoughtful

The world of logic, reasoning, abstractions and
numbers needs no introduction. Mathematics is
obviously pivotal, but mastering this aptitude takes
the pupils into the realms of science, computing,
economics and philosophy, and the acquisition of
skills such as recognition, reasoning, investigation
and calculation. All of these subjects and talents
have real prominence in the Wellington curriculum,
none more so than the constantly developing world
of information and communication technology.

We at Wellington pride ourselves on our level of pastoral care, based on the
house system in the Senior School and the classroom teacher in the Pre-Prep
and Prep School. Going to a school such as Wellington is in many ways a
privilege, providing what is often called ‘an excellent start in life’. With such
an opportunity goes a sense of responsibility, and perspective, and our pupils
must develop the ability not just to think for themselves but also for others,

Vital aspects of growing up in the 21st century are understanding yourself; knowing who
you are; what you can personally achieve; what you aspire to; and perhaps most important
of all, what to avoid. In a wide variety of ways, Wellington seeks to instil responsibility,

Personal
What is right? What is wrong? We want all
Wellington pupils to make well informed
decisions in life. We want them to have
appropriate role models, sometimes not easy
in the 21st century. We encourage them to
learn from the mistakes of the past. We will
never forget that we are educating the leaders
of the future and we will ensure they are
equipped to make the right decisions as adults.
Spirituality can be defined as involving
deep, sometimes religious, feelings
and beliefs. All Wellington pupils must
develop an inner strength, fortified by
an appreciation of their own individual
positives and development areas. To
achieve this, our pupils must become
aware of their own environment,
the ideas which have shaped modern
civilisation and the nature of the world
in which they live, all of which they must
relate to their own thoughts and ideas.
The creative arts, in all its many
disciplines: painting, drawing, sculpting,
ceramics, craft and design, dance,
drama, music and the wide variety of
creative technologies, are available at
Wellington. They represent a crucial
part of our educational experience
and we encourage all our pupils to
participate in multiple cultural pursuits,
including visiting galleries, museums,
plays, and concerts.
A healthy lifestyle and devloping
an ability in a wide variety of
physical activities, whether
through excelling or merely
taking part, are vital objectives
for all Wellingtonians. Sport and
physical education obviously
play a major role in this but
the comprehensive Wellington
extra-curricular programme
goes much further and

opportunities for all our pupils
to stay fit, develop their creative
instincts in a physical fashion
and lead healthy lives.
Our youngest Wellingtonians are encouraged to develop their own individual learning skills in
stimulating, colourful and child-friendly surroundings. Pre-Prep runs from Pre-Nursery to Year 2
and is effectively split into two areas: the Early Years (Pre-Nursery to Reception) and Key Stage
One (Years 1 and 2), with each having its own curriculum.
In Early Years, the children follow the English Early Years Curriculum. It is a play-based approach,
with regular observations forming the main part of assessment. Children also have teacher
directed tasks and daily phonics, maths, literacy, and mandarin activities. The transition from
Early Years to Key Stage One sees the style of learning develop to more formal lessons where
they follow the English National Curriculum as a basis for the core subjects, and the International
Primary Curriculum for cross curricular topic work.
All children are taught for the majority of the day by a classroom teacher who, as well as
teaching many of the principal subjects, will provide the excellent pastoral care for which all the
Wellington schools are justifiably renowned. Specialist teachers lead Mandarin, Music, PE and
Swimming lessons.
Our aim at Wellington is to help every child reach his or her potential through developing a love
of learning and an inquiring, creative yet critical mind, which looks considerably beyond what is
taught in the classroom.
Pre-Prep
As pupils move on from Pre-Prep into the Prep School, the emphasis is on high academic
standards coupled with an extensive and varied programme of After School Activities (ASAs).
This combination serves as an integral part of the curriculum and draws very much on our Eight
Aptitude approach of encouraging all Wellingtonians to fulfil their potential.
Our main goal is to prepare our boys and girls for entry into the Senior School. This is
achieved through the highly-effective combination of traditional, formal teaching delivered
through imaginative and creative approaches, using the most modern classroom practices
and incorporating the Eight Aptitude model. The curriculum is based on the English National
Curriculum, suitably enhanced to incorporate exciting elements from the International Primary
Curriculum and also to reflect the fact that the College is an international school with a multi-
national pupil body.
Starting from Year 5, the pupils will also experience the benefits of high-quality specialist subject
teaching in the traditional academic subjects. The introduction of this style of learning reflects
best practice, providing the pupils top-quality teaching, as well as sound preparation for the
Senior School. This helps develop a sense of independence and responsibility as they work in
different classrooms with different teachers.
The Wellington curriculum is rigorous and stretching, being designed to meet the needs of each
individual by giving a breadth of educational experience and academic depth to prepare them for
entering the Senior School.
Prep School
In the Senior School our principal objective for all pupils is to inspire curiosity, creativity and
compassion. We aim to enrich our pupils’ lives with an enjoyment and understanding of our
global scientific, linguistic and cultural heritage, while also empowering them with the knowledge,
skills and independence of mind, in order to make them effective and responsible leaders of the
future.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils work for IGCSE in a wide variety of subjects. Some, such as English,
Mathematics and a combination of Sciences are core subjects, while others are optional. This
provides our pupils with an average of ten IGCSE choices. This builds on the solid foundation
developed during their time in Year 9.
In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) all pupils will study for the IBO Diploma Programme (IBDP),
subject to IBO authorisation. This is the world’s premier university entrance qualification. The
IBDP entails all sixth formers studying six subjects drawn from six groups, with three taken to the
Higher Level. However, the IBDP is much more than a series of academic subjects. The unique
features of CAS (Creativity, Action, Service), the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge
ensure that pupils are fully aware of their community responsibilities, are encouraged to develop
their research skills and to become independent thinkers. The underlying philosophy is that
pupils should share an academic experience which emphasises critical thinking, intercultural
understanding and an exposure to a variety of viewpoints.
Everybody at Wellington College has high expectations of ourselves and our pupils; we insist
that working hard, and intelligently, must always be the basis of success. We also know that
learning is most rewarding in a community that is lively, co-operative, curious and tolerant. To
remain such a community is the ultimate and perpetual challenge for everybody in the Senior
School.
Senior School
Enrichment at Wellington comes in many forms, whether it is
our sports and arts programmes, our commitment to cultural
pursuits, or simply the range of clubs and activities we offer
on a daily basis. An education here seeks to challenge, inspire
and motivate every Wellingtonian.
The ArtsThe Arts are central to Wellington life: every pupil is involved
in our dynamic arts programme, which seeks to inspire their
creative imagination and to make the very most of their artistic
talent and potential. We aim to give every Wellingtonian a
lifelong enjoyment across Drama, Dance, Music, Creative
Writing and Art & Design. We offer a wide programme of
activities and annual events with opportunities for pupils to
perform and showcase their learning and talent.

DramaThe College Theatre is the home of Drama at Wellington. With regular performances,
the department demonstrates versatility and depth by staging a major musical and
a variety of plays, as well as House events, drama competitions, talent shows and
pupil-led productions.
DanceWe take dance seriously at Wellington as it gives experience of very different
disciplines. Our dance clubs include Ballet, Jazz Dance, Contemporary and Physical
Theatre – and allow our pupils to explore the whole range of terpsichorean
experience.
ArtThe quality of the pupils’ work is evident throughout the College, whether in corridor
displays or exhibitions, the variety and creativity in each piece is exceptional. Our
aim is very simple: to get our best practitioners into the top art schools around the
world.
MusicMusic at Wellington is excellent. Whether the interest is classical, rock, jazz, or pop,
Wellington provides an enormously diverse and impressive musical programme. We

Other ArtsCreative writing, debating and film-making are deeply embedded in Wellington life.

company, which gives our pupils the experience of cutting-edge media work, as well

SportSport is an integral part of each pupil’s development, well-
being and education. It provides a platform to celebrate all
that is unique about being a Wellingtonian. By fostering an
‘active life’ philosophy and promoting a lifetime involvement
in sport and physical activity, we generate a sporting ethos
that puts into action the philosophy of the Eight Aptitudes.
Of course, sport is not just about the physical aptitude – it
develops the whole person. In that sense, sport at Wellington
is a truly transformative experience.
Wellington sport is emphatically for all. We seek to inspire
both the elite and the novice with a sense of the joy of
physical endeavour, with self-respect and with pride in
Wellington. We want all our pupils to enjoy their sport,
to seek excellence in their field and to maintain a healthy
lifestyle. Our talented and dedicated coaching teams strive
to create the best possible environment for pupils to learn
with a judicious mixture of challenge, competitiveness and
open communication.
In common with Wellington College in the UK, we have
established a ‘premier league’ reputation for sport, as one
would expect of a school with our facilities. There are many
opportunities for our pupils, at all age groups, to represent
Wellington in teams across a wide range of competitive
sports, as well as participating in a number of different
recreational activities.
After School Activities Our After School Activities (ASAs) run from Monday to Thursday as part of the school day,
they involve an impressive array of activities ranging from African Drumming to Electric Music
Production, and from Swimming to Volleyball. With dozens of activities on offer, there is
something for every pupil to try.
ASAs provide an exciting opportunity for pupils to explore new interests, as well as spend time
developing skills. As each activity has a variety of age groups, this time allows for Wellingtonians
to connect to other pupils across the College.
Wellington Academy Programme The Wellington Academy Programme is a fantastic opportunity for Wellington College pupils
and children from the wider Shanghai community to be taught by coaches and teachers with
incredible experience and expertise. The staff, consisting mostly of Wellington teachers, coupled
with the standard of the College facilities makes such an ambitious programme possible here.
The Academy Programme is separate from the ASA programme and provides a specialised
training environment for children who wish to take their skills to a more elite level. Fees and

The House System ensures Wellingtonians become a crucial member of a team as they enter one
of the Houses at the College. If one imagines a year group as a horizontal structure, including
every pupil across a given year in age, then the House is a vertical structure which has some
members of each year group.
Over the course of the year, several House-based compititions and events will bring Wellingtonians
together, not just in their houses and across year groups, but in a wide sense, involving the whole
community.
This system, coupled with our Well-being lessons and Eight Aptitude approach to learning
provides a healthy and stimulating environment where every child will have a sense of belonging
and fulfilment.

HOPETOUN WELLESLEY COMBERMERE STANLEY LYNEDOCH
Life will be rich and fulfilling at Wellington for boarders. Running parallel to academic development,
our boarding experience is designed to offer the greatest opportunities possible for pupils to
further their ability and interest in sports, music, drama and indeed, all forms of self-expression.
The essence of boarding life at Wellington centres on the house and its inclusive nature, where
boys and girls of all ages, and staff, are thoroughly involved in their own community. Our boarders
develop in an environment that is friendly, stimulating, sociable and structured, helping them to
become what we believe is a true Wellingtonian.
There is an important sense of routine about boarding life at Wellington, which in itself will
help promote that essential self-discipline amongst our pupils. The boarders wake at 07.00 and
move to the main school building, where they will be based for the duration of the school day,
returning at 16.45 for further prep and various activities.
The boarding house has been purpose built to provide the best possible boarding environment.
All pupils are accommodated in comfortable and spacious study-bedrooms, with individual desks
and ample wardrobe and storage space. We have rooms to accommodate four pupils, two pupils
and, for our sixth formers, we have single en-suite rooms. In all cases, boarders will be able to
add their own personal touches to make it feel like home.
The Boarding Housemaster oversees the running of the house with support from a full team
of house tutors to provide care and supervision. Each of these tutors is experienced in the
boarding environment and is focused on making our programme the best experience possible for
boarders. Most of our boarders go home at weekends, though a few of the older ones will opt
to remain at the College, where they benefit from the full support boarding staff, all of whom
live on site. The team is truly in loco parentis.

There are various boarding options at Wellington:
Full time - These pupils stay with us throughout the term, returning home during all holidays.
Weekly - This is our most popular option, with pupils arriving on Sunday evening or Monday
morning and returning home on Friday evening.
Flexi boarding - These pupils stay for between 1 and 3 nights per week, often to align with
their extra-curricular commitments. This option is also a perfect way for our pupils to sample
boarding life at the College.
Our teachers have been involved with producing at BBC Radio, banking in London, casting
Hollywood films, directing and acting plays, even cryptography. They have spent years in Florence
perfecting their arts, pouring over their PHDs in Molecular Biology, and exploring the world
perfecting their culinary skills.
We boast teachers who have played football for England, and those who have played cricket for
Scotland, two national rugby players, an ex-tennis pro, and even a boxer. From two time Olympic
Swimmers to qualified ski coaches and even a trampoline coach!
BBC scriptwriters, linguists, mechanical engineers who sung with the London Symphony Chorus,
computer programmers, photojournalists, ballerinas, and animal behaviour specialists.
They have published various historical works, analysed forgotten scripts and languages, they
have even been chased by the odd hippo. From kayaking over 300 km through the heart of Sayan
Mountains in Siberia to travelling the globe teaching, learning and exploring, our teachers have
achieved unbelievable things, and we have not even mentioned what they do in the classroom!

The Friends of Wellington (FOW) represents our parents, teachers and other members of the
Wellington Community, meeting regularly and contributing to making life at the College vibrant,
and not just for the pupils.
Partaking in, and organising events such as the International Food Fair, Breakfast with Santa and
various evening events for parents, the Friends of Wellington is a buzzing network of people living
within Shanghai. It is the single best way for parents to connect with each other and discover
more of Shanghai together. It also offers the unique experience to socialise with teachers and
other members of staff to learn more about the fantastic team we have here at Wellington
College in Shanghai.
FOWour teachers
The campus offers the very best in purpose-built educational facilities for our pupils, incorporating
everything required for academic and extra-curricular excellence in 21st-century schooling. The
appearance and design of the building are inspired by the distinctive architecture at Wellington
College in the UK.
The Science laboratories, the Art rooms and the Design Technology suites are designed to
encourage, first and foremost, an enjoyment in both practical and theoretical work. They are
also capable of creating that extra level of creativity, and ambition, that the great scientists,
artists and designers strive for, and, ultimately achieve.
At the very heart of the school, geographically and academically, is the College Library. Filled
with far more than books, it is a multi-media centre for prep and senior pupils, promoting
independent study. For all Wellingtonians, the library is a very real learning resource designed to
generate a meaningful interest, indeed love, of reading and research.
The Performing Arts Centre caters for our musicians, dancers and thespians, with the dedicated
practice rooms, the dance studio, the Black Box and, for major concerts and productions, the
500-seat College Theatre, also the venue for all school assemblies.
Sport is another major Wellington priority. Here, the facilities are second to none, with the
Sports Hall, three football pitches, a 400-metres Tartan running track, tennis and basketball
courts and two swimming pools, including a 25 metres, six-lane competition pool.
Few schools in the world are blessed with the resources available at Wellington, all designed to
support the wide-ranging extra-curricular activities programme available, both after-school and
at the weekends.

admissionsWellington College encourages applications from girls and boys with a wide range of skills and
talents. Admission to the College is subject to a selection process that has been designed with
the firm belief that all children have something to offer.
Whilst the exact entry procedures vary across the different schools at the College, the admission
process generally consists of an age appropriate academic evaluation; an assessment of English

achievements; and an interview during which the pupil should be able to demonstrate a desire
to attend Wellington and a willingness to participate in College life. We do our upmost to make
this process as comfortable as possible.
Prior to submitting an application, we do encourage parents and the prospective pupils to visit
the College by attending one of our regular Visitors’ Days or campus tours.
