COLOURS POLICY

05. COLOURS AWARDS POLICY
SECTION A: INTRODUCTION
1. Two separate systems will be used when nominating candidates for colour awards in the
following divisions:
(a) Sport
(b) Cultural
2. Only clubs, teams and societies that comply with all the regulations as laid out in the
documents, Sports and Cultural, are eligible for colour awards.
3. A separate policy will exist for each activity, and once co-ordinated, will fulfill the criteria
as laid out in the General Policy for the Awarding of School Colours.
4. The Policies as stated in Point 3 above, may be amended by the person in charge of that
activity before the commencement of the season/year, and any such changes must be
approved by the Awards Council before taking effect.
5. It must be clearly understood by pupils and teachers that the awarding of colours is
not merely an award for an activity well performed, but rather, recognition of overall
excellence of achievement, ability, behavior, personality and loyalty towards his/her
sport and school.
6. Standards should not be allowed to change from year to year. The level of excellence
achieved by a pupil can only be gauged by comparison with the levels achieved by pupils
from other schools - as far as possible. The question must be asked: “Would this candidate
have achieved the same success had he/she been in another school?” If the answer is yes,
then he/she can be considered to have reached a degree of excellence and not merely be the
best in his/her team.
7. The number of colour awards must be kept to a minimum; only those who obtain full points
as in Point 5 above should be proposed, thereby lifting the image of colours and offering
more of a challenge to the top-performing pupils.
8. Any new activity which wishes to be considered for Colour Awards must submit to the
Awards Council, a memorandum on the activities, selection and aims of the activity, as well
as a policy for the nomination of candidates for Colour awards,
9. The Awards Council will consist of the Executive Staff, and the person in charge of the
activity who will be responsible for nominating the pupil(s) for Colour Awards. Should the
Preparatory or Secondary School Principal be the person responsible for the activity, another
member of the Executive must sit on the Council.
10. Notwithstanding all of the above, Colours shall be awarded to pupils strictly in accordance
with the specific requirements of the applicable sections of this policy, as follows:
To pupils in the Junior Primary Phase (Grade R, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3) in
terms of Section B: Junior Primary Colours
3
To pupils in the Senior Primary Phase (Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6 and Grade 7) in
terms of Section C: Senior Colours Awards
To pupils in the Secondary School Phase (Grades 8 – 12) in terms of Section C:
Senior Colours Awards
11. Pupils in Grades 4 and 5 will be eligible for Half Colours ONLY and NOT for
Full Colours. Pupils in the higher Grades are eligible for Half and Full
Colour Awards. It is recommended, however, that a pupil be awarded Half
Colours first before he or she is awarded Full Colours, but exceptional cases will be
considered on merit.
11. A pupil may only be awarded ONE scroll for a particular activity. Should the pupil again
qualify, he or she will receive a first re-award in the form of a bar on the lapel of his/her
blazer and the badge on the pocket will be replaced with the ornate badge. Any additional
re-awards, for the same activity, will be in the form of an ornate embroidered scroll of a size
larger than the first-award full colours scroll, to replace the original scroll.
12. Colours awards made in the Preparatory School will, generally, not be transferable to the
Secondary School, and all insignia, braid etc. must be removed upon the recipient starting
Grade 8. The exception to the above is an ACADEMIC scroll, awarded for achievement in
Grade 7.
13. Similarly, all awards made by other schools are not transferable to Shangri-La Academy.
14. The number of years of participation in an activity in the Junior Primary Phase, as
well as any points earned for particular activities IN GRADE 1 - 3, may, however, be
carried over to Senior Primary Phase, provided that there is no break in participation
between the two phases.
Similarly, the number of years of participation in an activity in Preparatory School, as
well as any points earned for particular activities IN GRADE 7, may, be carried over
to Secondary School, provided that there is no break in participation between the
two phases.
GENERAL POLICY FOR THE AWARDING OF SCHOOL COLOURS
1. Colours are awarded to pupils of Shangri-La Academy after lengthy and careful deliberation
by the Awards Council. The Awards Council consists of the following members:

2. The Council sits when requested to do so by the Teacher in charge of the activity, and only
4
on presentation of a fully motivated memorandum detailing the career, personality etc.
of the pupil concerned.
3. Pupils will only be eligible for colour awards if they have represented the Academy in that
particular activity. Where no age group exists, the pupil must have participated in that
activity for a minimum of one full year or one full season.
4. The person nominating the candidate must supply the committee with the required
nomination form, supporting documents and Student Profile.
5. Pupils are to wear the Colours for a full year before being considered for an
“upgrade”.

3. It must once again be stressed that a Colour Award is not merely an award for an
activity well performed, but rather recognition of overall excellence of
achievement, ability, behaviour, personality and loyalty to an activity and the
Academy, and points awarded MUST be a REALISTIC rating of these
characteristics. Bear in mind that the highest score of implies “perfection” or
“no room for improvement”, and any one child achieving full points for each
and every rating category is meant to be a rare and special event, deserving of
special recognition.
