What Are Some Factors That Shape Nationalism?

Record the ideas of both Revolution and Republic into your

notes

Has there ever been a revolution in Canada?

Canada came into being as a democracy, so a revolution was not required to establish people’s rights, freedoms and power. How has that shaped the country’s

development as a nation?

What are some of the advantages of living in a republic as opposed to a monarchy? What are some disadvantages?

What factors play a role in what you can become in life?

In pre-revolutionary France, most people’s roles were determined before they were born. The son or daughter of a commoner – a peasant, labourer or businessperson – was likely to

remain a commoner all his or her life

How would this make you feel?

Having your life predetermined, is a social factor that contributed to the French Revolution

Momentarily, you will be numbered off one through four. Each of you will go to one of the four assigned EXPERT groups and complete your assigned factor. You will be working toward adding to the web you just started. Make notes on how the factor affected French Nationalism. You will

have approximately 15-20 minutes to do this.

#1 – Economic Factors (Page 46)#2 – Geographic Factors (Page 48)

#3 – Political Factors (Page 49)#4 – Outside Threats/Reign of Terror (Page 50)

When finished, return to your original group of four and share your EXPERTISE with your other three group members. They will do the same for you. When you are done, your web WILL be filled in

and complete.

Historical Factor the helped shape French Nationalism

• No single event can cause a revolution, but it can inspire one.

• The Bastille became a symbol of King Louis XVI’s absolute power to jail, punish, and execute anyone

• July 4th, 1789 about 600 angry Parisians stormed the prison and captured it. They then set the prisoners free (only 7).

• News of the capture spread, and soon people across France were inspired

Page 13: Shaping Nationalism Read and Review Figure 2-1 and its Caption on Page 40 What are the main differences between the rebellions of 1789 and 2005? Is rebelling.

Social Factors that helped shape French Nationalism

• Peoples roles were established before they were even born, commoners would remain commoners all their life

• King, aristocrats, and nobility held most of the power. All knew very little of the concerns of commoners- because they could not identify with them

• France, being the cultural centre it was, began to see an increase in people’s curiosity about rights and freedoms

• Resentment grew over little say in government, compared to people in Britain.

• Despite the danger of speaking out against the king people began to publish their thoughts

• The middle class began to grow rapidly, and gaining wealth

Page 14: Shaping Nationalism Read and Review Figure 2-1 and its Caption on Page 40 What are the main differences between the rebellions of 1789 and 2005? Is rebelling.

Economic Factors that helped shape French

Nationalism• For many years France had been

embarking in expensive wars with other European countries- without success

• Versailles became another expense on the Kings Budget

• To raise money the King decided to raise taxes, when the aristocrats blocked the plan, the King called a meeting of the Estates General (1st time since 1614!)

Page 15: Shaping Nationalism Read and Review Figure 2-1 and its Caption on Page 40 What are the main differences between the rebellions of 1789 and 2005? Is rebelling.

Political factors that shaped French nationalism

• The Estates General was like parliament, made up of elected representatives

• The three estates met and voted separately, the majority vote then became a single vote = always 2-1

• When King Louis XVI called the meeting to impose new taxes on the French people, the 3rd Estate demanded that each members vote count, instead of 1

• The door to the hall where the 3rd estate was supposed to meet was locked, they went elsewhere (a Tennis court) and became known as the National Assembly

• The National Assembly came up with the “ Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen” which would take away all the power that the King and aristocracy had enjoyed

• When news gathered that the King was gathering troops, angry Parisians stormed the Bastille

Geographic factors that helped shape French

Nationalism• French peasants were very worried about the recent weather

conditions• Winter of 1788-1789 coldest ever, making harvest bad, as well

as blocking roads to trade• Spring and summer saw flooding and drought• Price of flour rose because it wasn’t getting produced, which

lead to the price of bread sky-rocketing and at this time peasants and labourers would spend up to 90% of their wages on bread

• Riots occurred over the price of bread• By October 1789, many people were desperate, crowds of

women gathered outside the Palace of Versailles, asking the King to help his people- He fled

Page 17: Shaping Nationalism Read and Review Figure 2-1 and its Caption on Page 40 What are the main differences between the rebellions of 1789 and 2005? Is rebelling.

Reign of Terror

• Once France’s Revolutionary army had gained power they still had to fight against other European countries that had sent troops to try and restore King Louis to power- worried revolutions would happen in their countries as well

• Revolutionary leaders decided to execute Louis XVI• This brutal crackdown became known as the “Reign of

Terror” lasting 11 months• 200,000 were arrested, and about 17 000 were

sentenced to die by Guillotine

Listen to Gordon Lightfoot and follow along with the Lyrics

How does Lightfoot describe Canada before the railroad was constructed?

How would life change when the railroad was finished?

Who built the railway? What was the work like?

How might the lyrics change if they were written from the perspective of First Nations or Métis people? From the point of view of a Chinese worker?
