17: SAMONOV, PYOTR USD 35,000 - 45,000

PYOTR ALEKSANDROVICH SAMONOV (RUSSIAN B1863), "Cossack Officer on Horseback", bronze with medium brown patina, height: 34.5 cm (13 5/8 in.), length: 38 cm (15 in.), width: 13.5 cm (5 3/8 in.), signed in Cyrillic in the base, inscribed in Cyrillic withWoerffel St. Petersburg foundry mark. Pyotr Aleksandrovich Samonov was a highly noted sculptor in bronze whose works were castby the Woerffel foundry. His most famous work was a large-scale monument to General Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobolev, the hero of theRusso-Turkish War of 1877-78, which was erected on Tverskaya Street in Moscow in 1912 (see figure 1 below). Unfortunately, themonument was short-lived, as it was taken down in 1918 by the Communist government. Today, the monument to Yuriy Dolgorukiy, erected in 1954, stands in its place. Web: This is a very rare bronze by an important sculptor in turn-of-the-century Russia, PyotrAleksandrovich Samonov. Samonov's best known-work was a large-scale monument to General Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobolev, whichwas erected on Tverskaya Street in Moscow in 1912. The monument was one of the most important in Moscow, but unfortunately itwas short-lived - it was taken down in 1918 by the Communist government. Today, the monument to Yuriy Dolgorukiy, erected in1954, stands in its place., , Samonov was born on February 2, 1863 to a Russian Orthodox family from the nobility in the St.Petersburg province. Having received an artistic training, he nevertheless enlisted in the Russian army in 1889. Repeatedlypromoted in the army, he eventually reached the rank of Podpolkovnik (Lieutenant-Colonel) before retiring to the Reserves in 1908.After leaving the army, Samonov devoted himself fully to his sculpture. Around 1912, Samonov, beating many contenders, waschosen as the winner of a project for a memorial monument to General Skobolev, hero of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78 andconqueror of numerous Russian territories in Central Asia. After the Revolution, the last traces of Pyotr Aleksandrovich weredetected in Serbia, where he died in exile sometime around the 1930s. This position as an enemy of the state, along with theremoval of his monument, account for the relative rarity of Samonov's works. This is a shame, as Samonov's existing works, such as"Cossack Officer on Horseback", demonstrate not only his empirical knowledge of subject-matter, but an extremely refined and rarelyseen talent for capturing movement and presence in sculptural form

We are grateful to Dr. Anthony Parton for his help in cataloguingthis work and the following catalogue note: "Mikhail Larionov painted his first Rayist works in Moscow in 1912 and continued toexecute works in this exciting style until the 1930s. Although the style was initially inspired by Cubist and Futurist practices Larionovdeveloped a highly individualistic approach to abstract art and one that was underpinned by a theory that was very different to that ofhis French and Italian contemporaries. Rayism purported to represent a spiritual world, the uncharted forms of which were suggestedin his paintings by the complex intersection of rays which established a metaphysical pictorial space. The work offered here for saleis an excellent example of Larionov's mature Rayist work. It is initialed in Latin and this, together with the advanced style of the work, suggests that it dates from 1917-1921, once Larionov had arrived in Western Europe to work with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes."

Vladimir Serov painted the original version of V.I. LeninProclaims Soviet Power in 1947. The present lot is one of the few copies that the artist made himself of his own composition in theyears that followed. It is especially interesting to note that there were several versions of this painting. The original painting depictedStalin, Dzerzhinsky, and Sverdlov standing on the tribune behind Lenin. The painting itself was considered so important that it waspresented to Mao Tse Tung. In versions of the painting after 1956, Serov was ordered, due to the collapse of the personality cultafter the XXth Congress of the Communist Party in the same year, to not show Stalin or the others, but replace them with workers. The present lot, painted in 1954, does show the full Bolshevik leadership as the artist originally painted it, including Lenin, Stalin,Dzerzhinsky, and Sverdlov, at the historic meeting of the Second All-Russia Congress of Soviets at the Smolny Institute in Octoberof 1917

Along with the title in Cyrillic on the verso ofthis painting, the date of "1952" appears, along with the inscription of the German city "Bremerhaven" in both Latin and Cyrillic. VitalyMushketov was a teacher of the arts and dedicated employee of the Smolensk Museum, who collaborated with the Germanoccupying forces for the sake of cataloguing the exhibits that were being looted (see Vladimir Kovalev,http://www.lostart.ru/press/555.html). He accompanied part of the museum collection that was evacuated upon the taking of Vilniusby the Soviet Army, but unfortunately during the evacuation of Vilnius, he was removed from the further packaging and transportationof exhibits and managed to find only the approximate route taken. His copious cataloguing notes came into Soviet hands after thewar and helped to discern the fate of many of the looted exhibits. However, while several artists' dictionaries and sources listMushketov's date of death as 1945, it would be interesting to know if that can be corroborated by records, or if, as Kovalev notes,Mushketov's whereabouts were unknown after the German evacuation from Vilnius. Perhaps this painting may provide some clues

117: BURLIUK, DAVID USD 15,000 - 20,000

DAVID BURLIUK (RUSSIAN 1882-1967), "Homage to Lucas Cranach", oil on wood, 30.5 x 14 cm (12 x 5 1/2 in.), signed lower rightand dated 1765 lower left. PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the Artist by Myron Lyzon King of Hampton Bays, Long Island, neighbor and close friend of David and Marussia Burliuk. "Homage to Lucas Cranach" amply demonstrates Burliuk's enthusiasm forboth the style and medium of the old masters. Burliuk painted his nude in a well defined rectangular space so as to make the woodpanels, so associated with the old masters, stand out. And with his typical flair and famous tongue-in-cheek manner, he dated thepainting 1765. Whether Burliuk knew or not that this was several hundred years too late for Cranach (and it almost certain that hedid), it adds a touch of whimsy to a painting that is already a rare example of subject-matter for such a prolific artist

118: BURLIUK, DAVID USD 16,000 - 20,000

DAVID BURLIUK (RUSSIAN 1882-1967), "Negro Shantytown", Florida, ca. 1930s-40s, oil on canvas, 30.5 x 40.6 cm (12 x 16 in.),signed lower right. Burliuk's 1930-40s paintings such as the present lot "Negro Shantytown, Florida" with their warm color-tones andrelatively calm imagery, juxtapose a sense of empathy along with socio-political realities in a subtle manner. While not all of hispaintings were so subtle in their social message (see for example, his seminal "Unemployedville" from 1933), they never overwhelmthe viewer with a sense of politicization or socialist angst, unlike some of the WPA and Social Realist works by other artists from thetime period. In this painting, the tropical setting and atmospheric feeling make us all too easily forget the life of subsistence andscraping-by visible in the foreground.

119: BURLIUK, DAVID USD 10,000 - 15,000

DAVID BURLIUK (RUSSIAN 1882-1967), "Vase of Flowers on the Sea with a Swallow", oil on canvasboard, 40.6 x 30.5 cm (16 x 12in.), signed lower right. Burliuk's fondness for little birds is clearly evident in the photograph of the artist appearing here. What is evenmore interesting to note is Burliuk's treatment of the rest of the painting, and how his especially impressionistic application of paint inthe sea, sky, and flowers seem to mirror the lightness of the bird

PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist in 1968 by an American diplomat,Private Collection, U.S.A. LITERATURE, Sjeklocha and Mead, "Unofficial Art in the Soviet Union", University of California Press,Berkeley, 1967, illustrated as Figure 85 , K. Kuzminsky, "Vasil Yaklicha Sitnikova", Lordville, 2009, illustrated on pages 42-44. Thepresent lot is a rare fine example of Vasily Sitnikov's early portraiture. By 1951, Sitnikov's confinement in a psychiatric institution wasover. He returned to Moscow with no permission for permanent employment. The status of a mentally handicapped person in theSoviet Union was equal to a status of leper. Sitnikov was denied the right for possession of a passport, had to support himself withvarious odd jobs, and was completely dependent on his sister, Tamara Yakovlevna, a professional ballet dancer. In this painting,Sitnikov portrays his sister with the utmost delicacy and affection. It was not until the late 1960s that Sitnikov began enjoying somecommercial success. His corpulent nudes and snow-covered monasteries sold well with Moscow intellectuals and Western diplomatsequally. Sitnikov spent most of his gains to expand his own art collection that included several hundreds of rare icons and Russianantiques (see Lot 12 in this catalog for an example of a rare book from Sitnikov's collection). In 1975, Sitnikov unexpectedlyemigrated to the United States, leaving his icon collection to Tamara Yakovlevna. She would later bequeath the collection to theAndrey Rublev Museum in Andronikov Monastery, Moscow

The accompanyingpress-release to the exhibition noted that in Izmailov's works of the 1970s, the viewer is treated to a full sense of the philosophiesand ideals of the Russian intelligentsia as they existed at that time. Even later, as an emigré to Western Europe, Izmailov maintaineda sense in his works of a fight against despondency which characterized the unofficial art movements, through means of acelebration of the romantic, the metaphorical, and the literary. For this reason his work is, and will remain, significant to the history ofRussian art in recent times.
