Message to Conservative Friends of Bangladesh 2017
The longstanding and strong relationship between the UK and Bangladesh, based on our shared history and mutual interests, is of great benefit to both our nations. Conservative Friends of Bangladesh play a key role in helping British Bangladeshis to play their full part in our community, enriching our culture and helping to build our economy. I am very grateful for all you do in encouraging British Bangladeshis to become involved in our Party too, and for the hard work of your members in seats up and down the country at the general election earlier this year. I know how hard you work – not least Anne Main MP, as President of Conservative Friends of Bangladesh. I hope the forthcoming visit is a success and that you have the chance to see how the UK, as Bangladesh’s largest bilateral grant donor, is assisting the people of Bangladesh in building a prosperous, peaceful and democratic future. Social action projects of this kind help to promote co-operation and build understanding – something the UK will continue to encourage and support. I wish you well on your trip and with your continuing work.

I want to send everyone involved in the 2017 Conservative Friends of Bangladesh Project Shapla my very best wishes for your trip. I still remember my first visit to Bangladesh with Project Maja in September 2011 with great fondness and good memories. Social action projects make a real difference to the communities who benefit from the work of the volunteers. But the volunteers and project participants also benefit through new experiences and friendships and doing things they’ve never done before. I certainly never thought I’d watch a cataract operation so calmly! Conservative Friends of Bangladesh does brilliant work in building and developing relationships between the Conservative Party, the British Bangladeshi community and MPs. CFoB is active all-year round and invaluable in encouraging more people to get involved in politics and to stand for election. I am grateful for their continued support in Loughborough. The Conservative Party can be proud of our support for international development – dealing not only with emergencies around the world but also slowly strengthening communities and countries as they move from aid dependency to being self-sufficient and playing their full part in our world. Bangladesh is a great country with a very promising future. The relationship with the UK is important for both countries and we have much in common. I know that Project Shapla will deepen that relationship.
4
Project Shapla 2017 will be the fourth Conservative Friends ofBangladesh (CFoB) trip to Bangladesh since the group’s formation in 2006. The CFoB has established itself over the years into a large and extremely well run organisation that puts the interests of the people of Bangladesh as its priority. We will continue to work to build new relationships with Bangladeshis, both in the United Kingdom and in Bangladesh, and we strive to further ties between the two countries for our mutual interest.
The social action projects that we will undertake during our visit willgo towards promoting the healthcare, education and community for all those in Bangladesh. We look forward to returning to projects we visited during our previous trips to see how they have improved the lives of some of the poorest people in the country. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous sponsorsfor their support, their help has been vital and has made this trippossible. I want to also thank the Bangladesh High Commissioner in London and the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s office for their help in organising this trip.
We are all looking forward to another successful visit to Bangladeshwith the CFoB.

I am delighted to be organising the Project Shapla visit this year. We first travelled to Bangladesh in 2011 and this visit will be our fourth visit to Bangladesh.
Project Shapla is an International Social Action project of Conservative Friends of Bangladesh.
The aim of our social action visit is for our volunteers to understand about international development, our Parliamentarians and volunteers to develop a relationship and to leave a lasting legacy in Bangladesh.
This year Project Shapla will continue to partner with BRAC and the London Tigers and will work on a number of projects related to improving access to education, sport and healthcare in Sylhet, Cox Bazaar and Dhaka.
The Conservative Friends of Bangladesh exists to promote the culture, successes and values of British Bangladeshis and to build positive links between British Bangladeshis and the Conservative Party.
I would like to thank our corporate partners for their kind donation, individual sponsors and to our volunteers for giving up their valuable time to take part in this worthwhile work in Bangladesh.

BRAC was founded in 1972 by Sir Fazlé Hasan Abed at Shallah Upazillah in the district of Sunamganj, Sylhet, as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project to help returning war refugees after the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. We have since grown to become a global leader in development and have been voted as the number one NGO in the World by NGO Advisor for two years in succession.
We act as a catalyst, creating opportunities for people living in poverty to realise their potential. We specialise in piloting, perfecting and scaling innovations to impact the lives of millions. We are almost completely self-sustainable through our own network of social enterprises and investments, and operate in 11 countries across Asia and Africa.
BRAC is privilidged to be one of the biggest recipients of development funding from the UK Government. In 2016 we enabled 1.5 million children across Bangladesh to engage in reading, socialising and activity-based learning in our adolescent development clubs, whilst 400,000 students, who would have not enrolled or finished their education, completed primary education through our non-formal primary education programme.
These are just a couple of the many achievements BRAC has been able to make with the help of the UK Government.
I am delighted to be joining Conservative Friends of Bangladesh for my third social action project in the country overall and first this year. The terrible flooding that we have seen on our television screens reminds us of the fragile position in which so many Bangladeshis live their lives. UK Aid will be at the forefront of support there. But there is more that we can do ourselves. Politicians do a lot of talking. Project Shapla gives us an opportunity to actually do things, getting our hands dirty alongside British Bangladeshis who want to give something back to their country of heritage. In the past we have refurbished and painted schools, taught young children from the tea gardens in Sylhet and launched the Sylhet Tigers football and cricket teams. It is getting more and more difficult to keep up with the under-17 football team, the further I get away from that age myself but it’s always fun to try. British Bangladeshis have moved from their roots in the curry industry into finance, the law, IT, politics and science. However they all remember their shared heritage and the values that they have with the Conservative Party; the value of a good start in life; opportunities to succeed and provide for their families and the desire to give something back to society. Project Shapla is an amazing way to do just that and CFOB must be congratulated for another exciting journey across Bangladesh for old friends and new.
Best wishes
Paul Scully MPSutton and Cheam

It is an honour and a privilege to be organising the 2017 Project Shapla trip to Bangladesh initiated by Conservative Friends of Bangladesh. Being a founding member of CFOB since its inception is a huge honour and something that I will always cherish. Conservative Friends of Bangladesh helps to raise awareness of the potential Bangladesh has to offer and to build and encourage relationships with the British Bangladeshi people.
Our aim is to promote the culture, successes and values of British Bangladeshis and advocate closer relations between the Conservative Party and the Bangladeshi community.
CFOB has established itself as one of the most active friends groups within the Conservative Party by establishing successful social action projects to Bangladesh. I was at the heart of organising the very first social action project in 2011 and now in 2017 I am once again involved in organising our fourth project.
I am proud that through CFOB I have helped to achieve and make the impossible possible. This is mainly due to the commitment that fellow founding members and I have shown in putting the citizens of Bangladesh first before everything else through initiatives such as Project Shapla.
