Second generation Computers
Limitation of those computers
Who is who ? : Inventors
Second generation 1956-1963• Transistors replaced vacuum
tubes
• A device composed of semiconductor material that amplifies a signal or opens or closes a circuit.
• Invented at Bell Labs, transistors have become the key ingredient of all digital circuits, including computers
Second generation 1956-1963Advantages • was far superior to the vacuum tube, • allowing computers to become
smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient
• more reliable than their first-generation predecessors.
• High-level programming languages were also being developed at this time, such as COBOL and FORTRAN
• Stores memory, which moved from a magnetic drum to magnetic core technology.
Limitation
• generated a great deal of heat that subjected the computer to damage
• Second-generation computers still relied on punched cards for input and printouts for output
Next Issue – Third Generation of computer – Integrated circuits

My understanding is “‘count’ based data is Qualitative in nature”– please clarify.
Mr.V M Ramachandran of Sri Ganesh Ram Enterprises, Chennai
During S P C workshop
Qualitative are more of ‘Information’ only, a perception based status. An example would be,
‘Good machine’. It has NO numbers and hence, can not be treated as a data.
It is perfectly perception based and hence ‘Qualitative’ in nature.
When we have Numbers in it, then it becomes ‘Quantitative’.
What will be the ‘n’ for the X-MR chart ( Individual Moving Range Chart “ ?
Mr. Diwakar, Krysalis, Chennai
During S P C workshop
It is 2, always. The very important point is, when we pick up the Constant D4, we have to refer
the constant value for the Sample size 2 only. Many people miss it !

Why Quality Management System for automotives is called TS ?
Mr.Rajive kumar of Preethi Home appliances, Chennai
During FMEA workshop
The Working Committee of International Organization for Standardization ( of Geneva ) will
prepare Drafts ( of Standards ) first.
The draft will be sent for a Voting then ! ( Voting, with out any influences from any Politicians,
for a Change !!! )
The members will vote and at the end,
If the Draft won 75 % and above, it will be called as a STANDARD – directly.
If the Votes are more than 66 % but less than 75 %, then it will be released as ISO / TS
( Technical Specification )
If the votes are more than 50 % and less than 66 %, then the same will be identified as
ISO / PAS ( Publicly Available Specification ).
Any draft, got votes less than 50 % are not considered at all.
The status will be reviewed once in 3 years by the ISO committee.

If we wish to arrive at UCL & LCL for the Process control charts, how manySamples are required ? What is the ideal procedure for Bulk production ?
Mr. R Pradeep Kink of ELGI Equipments, Coimbatore
During QC tools workshop
The ideal practice is to –
1. Collect 125 samples –with out any adjustments.
2. Plot them in a Process Control chart ( Say X bar R chart )
3. Let’s remember, the Chart will not have any Control limits, as we are yet to capture the
same.
4. Ensure Process stability, by looking at the Patterns ( No Non-random Patters permitted )
5. Calculate Control limits, with Average of Ranges observed., by applying the formulae.
6. The ‘n’ shall be 5 &
7. The ‘m’ shall be 21 minimum for all Statistical analysis.
We shall go by Homogenization way also, which is acceptable. No change in the Sample
sizes, compared to the last method.

Are the costs related to Design improvements considered as ‘PreventionCost’ ?
Mr. R Pandurangan of TAFE, Madurai
During FMEA project review
Generally ‘yes’. Whereas , when a Field complaint is analyzed and improved through a
Product Design solution, it is more of a Failure cost only.
Good question !
Can we conduct M S A Studies, before PPAP run ?
Mr. Abhishek of Eicher, Bhopal
During APQP workshop
Quite possible.
For the Bias or Linearity studies, we need only 20 samples maximum. They shall be taken
from the Pre-launch production itself.
Only for the Attribute GRR study, we require more samples.- which shall be done during PPAP
study time.

Touch the tip of the thumb to the tip of the index finger, with the other three fingers stretched out.
As it is a mudra of knowledge, it enhances the knowledge. The tip of thumb has centers of pituitary and endocrine glands. When we press these centers by index finger the two glands work actively
There is no particular time duration for this mudra. You can practice by sitting, standing or lying on bed whenever and wherever you have time.
• Increases memory power and sharpens the brain• Enhances concentration and prevents Insomnia• If we practice it regularly, it will cure all psychological disorders like
Mental, Hysteria, Anger and Depression
