I know I’m a stickler for being early. To me, fifteen
minutes early is on time. Five minutes early is late. On
time is WAY late. Celebrate Recovery has helped me
identify where this obsession comes from and is helping
me with my anger when the people who influence when I
arrive places are, shall we say,…… less time conscious
than I.
But even at my worst I’ve never attacked anyone for
being late. I’ve grumbled; I’ve complained; I’ve huffed
and puffed as I stared at my watch; but I’ve never
committed assault and battery because someone kept me
from being on time.
Recently a Memphis man was arrested for pushing
and choking his wife for being late… [wait for it] … for
church. Nothing says, “I love Jesus” like strangling
someone for being late to worship.
I’ve always said that Satan works harder on Sunday
morning than any other time of the week. Many a family
has flown down the road on the Lord’s Day with Dad
hollering to the kids in the back seat, “Stop messing with
your sister or I’m going to come back there—we’re on our
way to worship Jesus,” only to get out in the church
parking lot forcing a smile and saying, “Good morning
brother Jim—glorious morning to worship the Lord” as if
nothing happened.
Hebrews 10:25 says not to give up meeting together,
but it doesn’t say it’s a sin to be a little late (as much as
some of us would like it to). It’s frustrating to be kept
waiting, but strangling your wife isn’t the answer I would
think you’d come to when you ask, “What would Jesus
do?” It’s also probably not going to help your marriage.
I’m not a licensed marriage counselor, but I’m making an
educated guess that it’s not good for the relationship. And
“We were late for church” isn’t going to hold water with
either an earthly judge or our Heavenly Judge.
Part of being a disciple of Christ is making sure our
actions match our beliefs, so that we don’t talk about
loving others on Sunday morning and then mistreat the
waitress or cashier when we go to lunch Sunday
afternoon. Jesus’ character was the same when He was at
worship and when He was being arrested on false
charges—full of grace and truth. And if we’re going to be
followers of His, that’s how we have to be.
(Continued in column 2)
It has been a very busy summer this year for our
children and youth at Cherry Avenue! It started off with
Vacation Bible School in June, moved to summer camp at
Camp Rudolph, and then swimming in our back to school
swims at the Archer’s house. Camps theme this year was
learning about the wonder of God; our middle school
week was super hero themed. No super hero is as amazing
as God though! The junior week learned about the wonder
of God through the Bible and people like Moses and
Gideon. There is a lot that we do not even know about
God, but what He has revealed is filled with wonder and
love. Also, there were back to school swims for all ages as
we prepared to start school back up in the fall.
September is here and we have events like the
church picnic and our full youth group program starting
back up! Children are not usually ready for school to start
back up, but I hear parents usually are ready. With the
starting of school means that more people will be in town,
make sure to join us on Sunday mornings and Sunday
nights! At youth group there is large group, small groups,
music, games, food, and fun! The grades are 3-12, bring
yourself and a friend, we look forward to seeing you there.

I hope this man gets help while he’s in jail. I know
Celebrate Recovery Inside could do him a world of good
in overcoming his anger issues. And maybe if he does, he
might be able to make amends to his wife. Regardless,
here’s a good lesson for all of us: be on time to church—it
just may help keep someone you love out of prison!

Repairers of Creation
Colossians 3:23-24
Just before graduating from college in 1951, Fred Rogers
turned on a television for the first time, and what he saw
totally appalled him. “I saw people dressed in some kind of
costumes, literally throwing pies in each other’s faces,”
Rogers later recalled. “I was astounded at that.”
But while Rogers “hated” what he saw in that first show, he
was also intrigued by a vision he had for how the medium of
television could be redeemed and used for good, particularly
in demonstrating Christ-like character to children. So he
decided to put on hold his desire to go to seminary and
become a minister but to go into television production. Sound
like quite the gap between career paths does it not?
Eventually, Rogers did both, attending seminary classes on his
lunch breaks while producing his show. But upon graduation
from Western Theological Seminary, Rogers knew he had to
choose between TV and pastoral ministry. For Rogers, the
decision to commit to a career in television was a relatively
easy one, as he felt that’s where he could be of the utmost
service to his “neighbors.” In the mind of Fred Rogers, there
was no divide between the sacred and the secular. He
understood that man’s first calling in the Garden was to
emulate the Creator Father by creating new things (Genesis
1:28) and that the path to having the greatest cultural impact
for the gospel is often found in embracing the call to create.
Fred Rogers may have never held a located ministry within a
local church but as one Presbyterian minister said on Rogers’s
behalf, “Here’s an individual who has his pulpit proudly in
front of a TV camera. His congregation is little people from
the ages of about two or three on up to about seven or eight.”
Fred Rogers knew that he was called to create a show as a
means of influencing culture with the Christian values he held
so dear. Later in his career, Rogers said, “No matter what our
particular job, especially in our world today, we all are called
to be ‘tikkun olam’—repairers of creation.”
“Tikkun olam” implies that while the world is innately good,
its Creator purposely left room for us to improve upon His
work. All human activities are opportunities to fulfill this
mission, and every human being can be involved in tikkun
olam—child or adult, student or entrepreneur, industrialist or
artist, caregiver or salesperson, or any one of us struggling to
keep afloat.
The Bible says in Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work
at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for
human masters, since you know that you will receive an
inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ
you are serving.

LIBRARY NEWS
It’s September – schools have started, football
season has kicked off! And it’s still hot! Plus that
grass keeps growing! We will have our Church
Picnic on September 8th
to kick-off the Fall quarter.
This year we will have the picnic at church. The
youth will play games in the Carter Family Life
Center from 4:00 ‘till 5:00. We will eat around
5:00 p.m., then go upstairs for some music. The
adults can fellowship in the fellowship hall until
dinner. So invite family, friends, and co-workers to
Bible School then bring them to the picnic. I hope
to see YOU in Bible School!

I used to have a dachshund that hated water. He
would go out of his way to avoid getting wet. Once,
on a walk, we happened to be walking on the
neighbor’s sidewalk when their lawn sprinkler
circled around, hitting him in the face. He
immediately stopped, not sure what to do next. And
I had to do a bit of coaxing to get him to walk just a
few steps forward where he would be out of the
sprinkler.
I wonder how much of life is like that. We hit a
season of life where we have no idea what to do,
how to get out of the mess we are in. And God is
there, trying to coax us to just move forward. He
knows what is ahead. If we just keep following
Him, He will lead us out of the thing that we are so
afraid of. He will make sure we finish our walk
safely.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but
of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has
begun a good work in you will complete it until the
day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6 NKJV
