    Established in 1979 by naturalist

    and author Joseph Cornell,

    Sharing Nature uses creative

    activities to give people joyful

    and inspiring experiences of na-

ture. We believe that by uplifting

    peoples consciousness we can

change the way they relate to the

    world around them. The method

we use to accomplish this transfor-

mation is Flow Learning, a playful

and inspirational teaching strategythat takes people where they are

and gently brings them to a more

    profound experience of nature.

Sharing Nature is dedicated to helping people of all agesexperience their oneness and harmony with all life.

In countless lands and cultures, people are discovering the joy o nature through the in-novative methods o naturalist Joseph Cornell. Sharing Nature activities give people theirown inspiring experiences o the natural worldthis simple key lies at the heart o Shar-ing Nature and is the secret o its amazing growth.

Josephs Sharing Nature books have been translated into 20 languages. They are used invirtually every corner o the earth. Joseph has personally presented his nature-awarenessprograms in 30 countries to tens o thousands o adults and children.

Joseph Cornell has quietly inuenced generations o teachers in the UK. His phi-losophy and activities have also become a key component or our countrys ReligiousEducation Environment Program. Professor Alan Dyer, University of Plymouth, UK

Sharing Nature is for adults, too...

Sharing Nature activities are helping adults rediscover their inner connection with nature. The Swedish adult education association SV, through itsNatural Recharging program, ishelping adults relieve the stresses o modern lie and fnd joy and serenity in natural sur-roundings, through reective Sharing Nature experiences.

Medical and mental health proessionals and religious leaders have discovered that theSharing Nature activities provide a way to promote inner harmony with the environment, and with God.

    How Sharing Nature Began

When Joseph Cornells frst book, Sharing Nature with Children was published in 1979,it was greeted with universal acclaim. Renowned conservationist Sir Peter Scott said,I ound Sharing Nature with Children a most original and imaginative concept in a feldwhich is vital or the welare o the planet. J. Baldwin, editor o Whole Earth Review, wrote, This is absolutely the best awareness-o-nature book Ive ever seen. Sharing Naturewith Children has become justly amous because it works.

Adults responded as enthusiastically as children, prompting Joseph to writeListening toNature, a guide or grown-ups to fnd inner peace and harmony with nature. About thissecond book, Vance Martin, executive director o World Wilderness Congress, said, Wetoo seldom take time to appreciate the essence o nature itselits beauty, wonder, andinspiration.Listening to Nature takes us back to this essence, showing us a pathway tobecoming a better person and ultimately a more eective conservationist.

Sharing Nature in Many CountriesEurope. Joseph Cornell has had a towering, phenomenal

inuence on the development o environmental education

in Central Europe. F. W. Georg, ounding director o the Na-

    ture Conservancy Academy, Hessen, Germany

Brazil. Rita Mendona, national Sharing Nature coordinator, gave a workshop in the Amazon or proessional ecotourism

guides, some o whom had worked in the area or 40 years.

Their attitude at rst was that she had little to teach them.

But ater several Sharing Nature activities, a woman ap-

proached Rita and said with deep emotion, You are helping

me nd the orest inside o me! We dont know the orest in

    this way!

New Zealand.Throughout New Zealand, children are grow-

ing up with the consciousness and experience o the Sharing

Nature activities.Kate Akers, Education Ofcer, New ZealandDepartment o Conservation

Japan. In Japan, more than 30,000 leaders have learned the

Sharing Nature methods, and more than 200 regional groups

are spreading Sharing Nature throughout Japan. Twenty-ve

Japanese universities ofer Sharing Nature semester courses,

and the Japanese Ministry o Education has endorsed the

use o Sharing Nature activities in the elementary science

    curriculum.

China. Chinas most inuential environmental organization,

Friends o Nature, reports that when Sharing Nature with

Children was translated into Chinese, it was the rst time that

efective methods or teaching environmentalism had ever

    been introduced in the country.

United States. In the late 1970s, Cornells book introduced

nature games in which nature is the teachergames

that inorm, inspire, and are just plain un. Almost two de-

cades later, with 500,000 copies oSharing Nature with Chil-

dren in 20 languages, Sharing Nature has become not just

When a copy ofSharing Nature with Children landed in our midst, the teacher/

naturalists were like vultures competing for the kill. Most of us were new to

environmental education. We had ecology textbooks and feld guides, but little

else besides what our hearts were guiding us to do. Here in this book, we found

everythingphilosophy, activities, and ways to lead children to meaningful envi-

ronmental education experiences. It was hugely signifcant to usit was our guide

    and our compass.

What never ceases to amaze me is that people so easily engagewith Sharing Nature games and the inspired Flow Learning strat-

egy. Flow Learning is so potent, so gentle, that it seems the mostnatural and obvious way to communicate nature education tochildren and adults.Kate Akers, Outdoor Educator, New Zealand

The Nature ActivitiesCreated by Joseph Cornell, educator and author of the Sharing Nature series of

books, Flow Learning has been praised by educators and facilitators worldwide for

its ease of use, effectiveness, and power to uplift and inspire.

Flow Learning gives teachers and youth leaders a simple, structured way to guide

students into their own, direct experiences of nature. Through playful games that

awaken the students curiosity and enthusiasm, learning becomes fun, immediate,

and dynamic, instead of static and secondhand. The students emerge with a living,

fresh understanding and reverence for the natural world.

Flow Learning is based on universal principles of how people

learn. It provides a simple, natural framework that sequence

    nature activities for maximum effect.

The four stages of Flow Learning are:

    1. Awaken Enthusiasm 2. Focus Attention3. Experience Directly 4. Share Inspiration.

Above:Sitting Quietly, Refecting: Writingpoetry and drawing ones best vieware among the Journey to the Hearto Nature exercises that help peoplebond with a special place in nature.

    Bird Calling: In North America,

you can call small birds to come closeby making a pssh-pssh sound (amethod used by birdwatchers). Here,a Brazilian girl in the Mata Atlnticarainorest uses a wooden call to attractbirds.

In Heartbeat o a Tree , children o any age use stethoscopes to listen tothe circulatory system o a tree. (Thin-barked trees work best.)

    Right:Share Inspiration: Refecting on our

personal experiences in nature, andsharing them with others, claries andstrengthens them.

A Flow Learning session begins with lively, playful

activities that awaken the students energy and

enthusiasm. The second series of activities challenge

the students to focus their attention through their

senses of touch, hearing, and sight. The third stage

offers activities that immerse the students in their own

direct experiences of the natural surroundings. By

becoming absorbed in an aspect of nature, the

players experience what it is like to be part of the

natural world. Finally, the students gather and share

    the inspiration of their experiences.

Flow Learning takes us beyond the intellect, and into

the heart where true understanding and appreciation cantake place.Michael Smithson, Chie o Resource Education,Olympic National Park

Germany & Central EuropeIn the 1970s and 1980s, nature education in Germany and Central Europe wasocused on the severe environmental issues acing the region. But educatorsbegan to notice that children were shying away rom nature, because they eltoverwhelmed by the problems.
