Issue-Oriented Science with SEPUPDescriptionThe Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) is based at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, and develops science instructional materials for grades 6-12 with support from the National Science Foundation. The SEPUP materials are widely used across the country, and six units were selected by the NYBOE as part of the recent core science curriculum, to be used in grades 78. SEPUP features an issue-oriented approach, developing science content through exploration of a diverse set of personal, societal, and environmental issues such as the disposal of toxic wastes, screening for genetic diseases, cardiovascular health, groundwater pollution, and more. The workshop will provide an overview of the program, and a handson look at program support for inquiry, assessment, literacy and technology.

Algebra I from an experiential perspectiveDescriptionSince the beginning of the present school year, 9th graders at Boys and Girls High School (BGHS) in Brooklyn have been learning Algebra in a very different way. Students and teachers at BGHS have been using the Algebra Project's experientially-based curriculum materials as the basis for their Algebra I course. In these materials students learning is built around a small set of engaging experiences which provide a constant reference for the more abstract concepts of Algebra I. The BGHS Student Presentation Group will provide, explain, and discuss examples of the Algebra concepts they have been studying for the past eight months.Day Friday Time: 10:1011:00 Room: Silver 701
