opinion.Traditionally this

exchange, apart from family or friends

circles, can take place through book clubs.

A library is an organized collection

of information resources made accessible to a

defined community for reference or

borrowing.

Page 49: Sharing the book

I BORROW

YOU LEND ME

WE SHARE

Page 50: Sharing the book

European culture is based on one book — the bible so we keep

almost a sacred relation with books.

As the gardian of books, libraries have also this aura. We see them as the reservoir

of knowledge.

Page 51: Sharing the book

With this system of borrowing, books circulate between

people, wearing out, living...

We can even find the trace of previous

users... as a evidence of this perpetual

exchange.

Page 52: Sharing the book
Page 53: Sharing the book
Page 54: Sharing the book
Page 55: Sharing the book
Page 56: Sharing the book
Page 57: Sharing the book
Page 58: Sharing the book

But beyond this exchange space,

library is a place of meeting, a space

locally established where people can

talk, exchange, meet others

Page 59: Sharing the book

Into a big quiet room.

A big quiet room

with books along

every wall.

“ Is this the place ? ” Time asked.

“ This is the place. ” Andrew said.

Page 60: Sharing the book

... and where librarians play an important role, to animate

this space and to be the link between books and users and

between readers.

Page 61: Sharing the book
Page 62: Sharing the book
Page 63: Sharing the book
Page 64: Sharing the book

But internet changes the way we access

knowledge. We can find a lot of books on the online

libraries and it’s faster and easier.

That changes also the way we search. The

library is not anymore the only place where

we can access to huge collection of books.

Page 65: Sharing the book
Page 66: Sharing the book

Against that, libraries decide to add more digital content and

more digital tools like online catalogue or

ebooks loan. They call themselves,

library 2.0

Page 67: Sharing the book

Even if libraries try to adapt themselves, is it enough to survive to

the digital revolution ?

13 / If you imagine now, that the future of the book is the digital book : Do you think you can continue to exchange your

book in the same way, I mean continue to exchange books even if it’s not physical books ?

16 / Why do you like or dislike to read on a computer ?

Page 89: Sharing the book

17 / If we consider now that books exchange can be online with people who you know only via internet, and you’ll never meet in the real life : do you think that the exchange will be better, equal or worst ?

No interest

Page 92: Sharing the book

M

18 / Do you think it’s preferable to meet in real people with who you exchange books ?

Yes it’s obvious !

Right ! And you won’t lend the same book depending who

A

A

Yes because you have a personal link with the person who lend you a book

yes

Page 93: Sharing the book
Page 94: Sharing the book

The intellectual work is becoming more

dematerialized. Print books disappear in

favour of digital. The book circulates easier and between more people : the

group of exchange is extended.

Internet, based on this idea of free and sharing, broadcasts largely by networks,

cultural goods.

Page 97: Sharing the book
Page 98: Sharing the book

Traditionnal sharing as an personal exhange and an

improvement is no longer sustainable in

this form. It’s only consumption. The book by his actual change, is threatened

by mass piracy.

The book has already survive to many revolutions like TV, radio... but maybe for the archive of the book, that will change

Yes for the copyright

That will be the same problem than music, people could illegaly download it and book could be in danger

You won’t need to buy books anymore, that you could read for free

20 / Do you have some anecdotes about sharing the book ?

Um...it’s interesting is people who abandon books in public transports

I found it on garbage (december 2012)

Page 108: Sharing the book

Ah yes...You come 15 minutes later,

the book disappeared

Last time I let them on the mailbox...

they stayed a while...

because people probably thought that it’s someone who forgot them...

but the day after they were disappeared

GF

Page 109: Sharing the book
Page 110: Sharing the book

The best moment is when you read a book which fulfilled you

And these questions of digital and physical... there is a relation to the physical object which disappears with the tablet

F

Page 111: Sharing the book

Yes...and when you see the personal library of people, it’s very personalized...

... when I emptied my husband library (who is dead),

I found annotated books from his hand and

it was

very emotional.
