A Trip To

Remember By Cindy Dinh

On the 28th of March, the Year 8 Chinese classes went on an excursion to visit Chinatown and the Chinese Garden of Friendship. It was a long trip to the city and they were able to explore the different places in Chinatown. Afterwards, they went and ate Yum Cha with many varieties of food. The experience helped them connect to each other. One half would go to the Chinese Garden of Friendship and one would go to Chinatown to explore. The day was a very exhausting one as while going back to school. It was a trip to remember for the year 8’s since they had a fun and enjoyable day. “It was a really fun day and I’m pretty sure all the Year 8’s would agree with me. ” -Jimmy Ly

Chinese New Year Incursion By Danielle Luu

On the 16th of February, an event was held for the students in Year 8 whom are studying the Chinese language and culture. This event was planned by Elaine Lin who said, “I wanted to let everyone experience a real Chinese cultural festival”. So as planned, the Year 8 Chinese students met under the cola where they participated in three activities; dancing to a Chinese song, learning to play diabolo (Chinese Yo-yo) , and developing skills on jianzi (footpucka).

Following on, a majestic show of the music produced from a pipa calmed the audience after an amazing lion dance performance which had the students in awe, as the lion dancers had gotten close enough to the students so they would be able to touch the costumes; an occurrence that would not usually be seen in public. After that, two other displays were held by Year 10 classes whom are also studying Chinese. These students had bravely danced whilst others had sung beautifully in Chinese.

As the event was coming to an end Ms Lin hosted a trivia in which the students had participated to earn the Chinese Good Luck Candy. A question from the trivia was “How do you count in Chinese?” In which a female student had answered correctly, so she earned some lollies which had been handed out from a helper of Ms Lin. This helper was then given the responsibility of being the host as Ms Lin had matters to attend to.

Once the trivia ended, the students had waited until the bell had rung before they were dismissed,

thus ending the event. One of the students, Jimmy Ly has said “It was really fun and I enjoyed most of

the activities there!” In the next years, Elaine Lin hopes that there will be another Lunar New Year

Celebration at school and the next Year 8s should hope as well!

Students Making a Change By Jimmy Ly

As we head into a new year, students are given the chance to try and do something to change our

society. Some of these people include, the Year 9 and Year 10 High Resolves Team. Lead by Ashleigh

Hollinger, the Year 9’s and 10’s go through a leadership program where they focus on leadership

skills, communication, team building and confidence. With the use of those skills, they use it in their

Social Action Plan which becomes a project for them to work on throughout the year. These

projects are usually based upon Social Justice Issues like racism and home phobia. They all usually

pick a topic that they all agree on and then create a project for the issue. Some examples of the

projects are fundraising or completing activities in the hall with Year 7s to raise awareness.

Last year, Year 9 arranged questions that were completed by students in roll call to raise awareness

about homelessness. They also raised money to donate to a company called Mission Australia. This

year, they are going on the very first High Resolves camp, Monday 9th of April. They will be staying

at Stanwell Tops for 3 days where there are cabins for the students to stay. There will be a wide

range of activities, like bushwalking and trivia nights. That place will also be the place where they

will start to work on their projects. These projects will be seen by the principle, Michael N Bryce,

who will approve or suggest other options to their projects. Mr Bryce likes to interact with the

students of High Resolves Team to help them create their best possible project and help them reach

their goals.

As said by Miss Hollinger, “For the past 2 years, this leadership program has been new and has just

started but it's getting a lot of momentum and it’s really good that the kids are enjoying it”. This

organisation has been pretty much successful in raising and donating money to charities and raising

awareness to big issues in the world right now.

There is also a website, http://www.highresolves.org, where you can head to to get more

information.

Year 7 Bonding Day By Tianna Luangrath

The Year 7 Bonding Day was a marvellous day to support the Year 7’s with their transition into high school. The meaning of the day was to help the students connect and discover life-long friendships. The event commenced at school from first period to fifth period. This occasion took place on the 28th of March with the help of the SRC and the peer support leaders.

The day consisted of communication and teamwork activities such as the human knot, chinese whisper and bullrush. This was arranged by the peer support leaders and the SRC members with the supervision of the teachers. The skills include trust, communication and teamwork exercises to help them adjust to their new environment.

The SRC are planning to make this event annual, to help bring the Bonnyrigg High School community closer together.

“It was an outstanding day for me to get to know more people and make more friends” - Roy Lim.

“Planning Bonding Day was a challenging, yet rewarding task as the SRC aimed to improve from last

year. The SRC members and the Peer Support groups collaborated and tried really hard to make the

day interesting and fun. We had an enjoyable day and believe that the Year 7s created new friendships

and a more comfortable year group” - Harrison Pham
