Outdoor Art - A Windy Day! Shark in the Park on a Windy Day By Nick Sharratt ‘Timothy Pope is blown this way and that way in the windy park -- but among the whistling wind and blustering brollies could that be a shark he spies through his telescope?’ Paper Windmills To make a windmill you will need a square of paper, a split pin and a straw. Fold your paper in quarters diagonally. Then snip halfway up each fold. Place glue in the centre and fold and stick each corner to the middle. Finish by attaching the windmill to the straw with a split pin. Hold it up in the wind and watch it spin! Wind Mobiles/Chimes Create mobiles for your outdoor area and watch them dance about in the wind. You will need a stick for hanging bits to and a selection of colourful objects. If you have metal objects they’ll make a nice noise in the breeze too! Kites There are lots of easy ways to make kites. Why not try and make this one out of newspaper, art straws, sticky tape and string. Cut a diamond shape out of newspaper, attach a straw down the centre and another across the middle. Remember to attach some string! How high can your kite fly? Blow Painting Trees Blow painting is fun but messy! For this activity you will need some paper, a straw, ink or paint. Paint blobs of green on your paper then blow through the straw to make the paint rush across the page to form branches. If you blow from one side the trees will look like they are bending in the wind! Once you are happy with your branches add a trunk! Claude Monet Monet depicted the wind beautifully in many of his paintings. Look closely at these images, how can you tell it is windy? How did Monet portray the weather? Can you think of a story to match the paintings? Have a go at creating your own windy picture. You could use paints like Monet or something else! Paper Aeroplanes Design and make your own paper aeroplane. You can explore the effects of different thicknesses of paper and designs on flight. Decorate your plane and then watch it soar as the wind takes hold of it outside!
