At the Core of Everything… an Excellent EducationCurriCulum mAtterS maintaining high college-preparatory standards The college preparatory academic program challenges the most advanced students and offers approximately 100 courses. Students can immerse themselves in a range of classes from Human Anatomy to British Literature. Fifteen AP courses are offered in all academic disciplines. The school year consists of three terms averaging twelve weeks each. Students are able to take SAT/ACT prep courses as well as sit for all major pre-college assessment exams on campus.

The weCreate Center opened in the fall of 2012. It is a place for student innovation and collaboration driven by student interests. There are spaces for film making, fashion design, creative writing, and architectural design to name just a few. This Center offers students the opportunity

to express their creativity and to develop products and solutions that address real world needs. The Center is founded on a design thinking approach to education that was initiated at Stanford University and is considered instrumental to developing the criti-

cal thinking, solution-orientation, and collaborative skills we know students will need to be successful in the 21st century.

Blended leArningreshaping the educational experience

Blended Learning is an approach to teaching older students that combines the rigor of traditional classroom instruction with online learning and allows for the inclusion of enrichment activities outside the classroom. This model supports the theory that as students complete their high school years, they need guided prepara-tion for the independent learning environment of college.

The Blended Learning model offers students flexibility in their schedule to pursue:

• Internships in organizations whose missions are tied to a student’s interests

• Independent research opportunities• Participation in community-based volunteer projects• Unique, creative pursuits within the new SSM weCreate Center• Opportunities for exploration and expanding horizons.

During the 2012-13 school year, over 30 blended classes will be offered by 25 teachers to 200 students. In addition, 20 students will participate in a pilot of fully blended classes. With experience and data to support the furthering of this educational approach, it is anticipated that our School will adopt a Blended Learning curriculum for all 11th and 12th grade students in the future. In 2012, our School was awarded a grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation to support this effort.

Shattuck-St. mary’s is nestled in the peaceful, rural community of Faribault in southern Minnesota but looks like it belongs among the classic East Coast boarding schools. Nearby Northfield is home to St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges. Faribault’s “main street” is a ten minute walk from our campus. Students can buy a pair of Birkenstocks at Burkhartzmeyer Shoes, order a sandwich at Subway, get a haircut at a number of salons, eat authentic Mexican food at Gran Plaza, stop for a latte at the Coffee Shop or pick up Chinese take-out at Long Cheng. The Paradise Center for the Arts hosts a range of events and has a gift shop with items crafted by local artisans.

Our close proximity to the Twin Cities (50 minutes) allows us to access a broad range of activities such as plays at the nationally renowned Guthrie Theatre, NHL hockey games at the Excel Energy Center, and classical music concerts at the Minnesota Symphony’s Orchestra Hall.

At the core of our School are students who find themselves amongst highly motivated peers and who are guided by dedicated teachers and coaches – most of whom live on-campus. There is a feeling of safety and support, so much so that students are willing to take risks and try something new, outside their comfort zones.

In addition, each student has an advisor who keeps a watchful eye over all aspects of that student’s SSM experience. Weekly community worship time is enhanced by student-led read-ings and performances. The Kramer House is a comprehensive health center on campus to support the physical and mental health needs of students. Weekends are organized with a balanced array of activities for a wide group of participants. The senior class is highly engaged in a Senior Leadership Program that connects students to both on and off-campus activities. And, each senior prepares and delivers a senior speech to the Upper School as a part of their senior leadership experience.
