Novemeber was a great month for Shaw P.S.! We had our second School Council meeting of the year. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us as the discussions were very engaging. We had the Public Health Nurse, Hardev Sodi come in and speak to us about the 5 (servings of fruits and vegtables) - 2 (no more then 2 hours of screen time) - 1 (at least 1 hour of physical activity daily) – 0 (sugary drinks) initiative. Recently, 2 teachers and 20 grade 7 students attended the launch of this initiative at the Brampton Soccer Centre. Shaw P.S. has taken the pleadge to encourage the 5 - 2- 1 - 0 initiative and will be aiming to encourage all students to drink water or white milk as a substitute to juices or sodas which generally tend to contain high levels of sugar.

Allison Farrugia, our teacher representative for School Council shared a short presentation on our upcoming community event Cram - a- Cruiser, taking place on Monday December 16, starting at 9:15 a.m. All families are welcome to come join us at Shaw P.S. as we make our contributions to the December food drive.

BREAKFAST CLUB

New to Shaw this year is an amazing leadership opportunity for our intermediate students. Our Shaw grades 7 and 8 students are now able to volunteer with serving and food prep at our Breakfast Club. This is a 1 year commitment and an amazing opportunity for our students to gain leadership and responsibility skills, ultimately giving them the tools required to be successful in the workforce. As an added bonus students are encouraged to use this experience on their resumes.

Grade 8 students enjoyed their Sabre Day at Sandalwood heights Secondary School, where they experienced a day in the life of a Grade 9 student. It is hoped that Gradce 8’s now have a better idea of what High School life “looks like”. Applications for all Grade 9 Regional and Explore High Skills (EHS) Programs have been completed for the 2019 year. The final deadline was November 28, extended from November 21, due to system technical difficulties. Check your email for follow up information regarding your child’s appointment or interview. The First Round of admission offers for EHS and Regional programs will not occur until February 1, 2019. The second round of offers is February 7, one week later. If your child is accepted into a program you must accept that position within one week. After this date, your child will be instructed on how to change their Grade 9 course selections from Sandalwood to their new school. Mrs. Shaw can help your child with this transfer process.

This Month in Shaw Athletics …

The month of November saw the beginning of the volleyball season for 4 teams, Senior Girls and Boys, as well as for the first time in 4 years, Junior Boys and Girls volleyball teams. Each of the intramurals for the students in grade 1 through 8 also began. The Senior Girls Volleyball team, under coach, Ms. Bergey, has been preparing all month for their upcoming tournament in early December. That preparation included an exhibition game against the Mustangs of Mountain Ash where the Shaw girls gained valuable experience and strategies. The Senior Boys Volleyball team, under coach, Mr. Partynski, have also prepared during after school practices. They too competed against the Mustangs in an exhibition match at Shaw Public School. The Shaw Boys also developed their experience and confidence by taking both sets in their exhibition game against Mountain Ash. The Senior Boys are set to compete in their divisional tournament in early December as well. The Junior Girls and Boys teams also got their seasons underway with Mrs. Young and Mrs. Sangha coaching the girls and Mr. Partynski coaching the boys. The Shaw Junior Girls competed in their divisional triple ball tournament on December 3rd at Ross Drive Public School. Despite losing a lopsided match in their first test against a strong set of Eagle Plains’ squads the Shaw Hawks didn’t give up hope as they progressively got better as the day went along learning a lot along the way. They finished the round robin in 4th place and proceeded to the quarterfinals winning a close match. They then lost a tough one in the semifinal match to the Eagles again. All was not lost as the junior lady Hawks persevered in their final match to take down the round robin second place finishers to capture 3rd place overall. Congratulations girls, we are proud of your efforts! The Shaw Junior Boys Volleyball team also continues to work on skills and strategies in practice in preparation for their triple ball tournament in early December.

On the intramural scene, the grade 1’s and 2’s have begun rolling their way to fun with the game of Pinball. The grade 3’s first learned the game that Harry Potter made popular, Quidditch, in Phys. Ed. class and have now begun to enjoy it during their intramurals. The grade 4/5 floor hockey intramurals are well underway! Penguins and Canadiens are tied in division A and the Oilers are leading in division B. The grade 6’s have begun a new intramural, elimination basketball, a game that the Athletic Council members were

introduced to at their Family of Schools Fun Day. Finally, the grade 7’s and 8’s are just getting underway with a unique game involving lots of teamwork and strategy in Kinball. Still looking for a chance to try out for some athletic teams at Shaw. We have basketball, badminton and handball coming up next. Stay tuned to the announcements and follow me, Mr. Partynski on Twitter for more news and information from the world of Physical Education and Athletics - @mrpartynski.

The Attitude of Gratitude From the PDSB Mental Health Resource Team

What is Gratitude?

Gratitude is all about focusing on what’s good in your life. It is paying attention to the things that we can sometimes take for granted, especially when we are feeling stressed. There are many different words that can describe feelings of gratitude, including feeling thankful, lucky, or fortunate. An attitude of gratitude involves actively choosing to acknowledge and appreciate the things you are thankful for in life. By making a focused effort to reflect on the positive parts of your day, the stressors you face can begin to feel a little less overwhelming.

Why Does Gratitude Matter? Practicing an attitude of gratitude can make a BIG difference on your overall outlook on life. Gratitude has been shown to BOOST both physical and mental health outcomes by helping people to: ✓ Improve their self-worth and esteem

✓ Balance their negative emotions

✓ Experience other positive emotions linked with gratitude (e.g., happiness)

✓ Build better relationships with others

Give Gratitude A Go Feel like an attitude of gratitude could benefit your family? Here are a few suggestions to get you started! 1. Keep a Journal: Each family member should write down three things they are thankful for each day (big or small). As a family, make a little time each week to review some of the entries. When an individual family member feels stressed or overwhelmed, encourage them to reflect on their recent journal entries. 2. Create a Photo Album: Take photos of things that make you and your family happy. Regularly add the photos to an album. Schedule a little relaxation time each week to review your entries. 3. Fill a Jar: Reflect on the things you and your family members are grateful for at the end of each day. For each reflection, add a marble to a jar to symbolize your gratitude. Monitor how long it takes to fill the jar. 4. Pay It Forward: Put together a gratitude box for someone else...why not one for each family member? On colourful pieces of paper, write several entries to let the person know what you appreciate about them. Try: ‘Thank you for…’ or ‘I love you because….’ Once the box is complete, wrap it and present it as a gift. 5. Say Thank You: As often as you can! Make a concerted effort to say thank you to other people. By thanking others, you will begin to notice things that you appreciate in the moment. Remember! Like any skill, gratitude is one that needs to be practiced. Anyone who spends time with children and youth knows that they are are mimics and they learn by watching how we deal with life's stresses and opportunities. By mindfully modelling gratitude and bringing our children and youth into this practice, we are promoting their healthy development for life! For updates and to follow along with the work of the PDSB Mental Health Resource Team, find them on Twitter @MHRTPeel. Adapted from Reach Out Australia (2018) and The Optimistic Child (1995).

Help your family stay warm this winter

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body. Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry

an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Invest in thick socks to keep your feet warm. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Page 11: Shaw PS News - Peel District School Board · SchoolMessenger app (free from Apple or Google Play) 1. Download the SchoolMessenger app 2. Tap Sign Up to create your account Web and

11

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in the winter.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.
