Hello 4-H Families! We had a full February and we have even more opportunities in March. I am always amazed at the number of opportunities 4-H affords young people in Shawnee County. Please pay close attention to the Calendar at the back of the chatterbox so you do not miss a fun activity or registration deadline. Believe it or not but registrations will be opening soon for summer activities like 4-H Camp, Discovery Days and Campference. We don’t want you to miss out on anything so read the Chatterbox closely and if you have questions, call us! If you get Chatterbox by e-mail that means that you are enrolled. Now would be a good time to go check your projects before our May 1 st deadline for enrollment. You can join 4-H at any time during the year but if you want to take a project to the fair you must be enrolled in that project on May 1 st . Families now have control over their 4-H enrollment so please make sure to go and check that your youth is enrolled in all the projects they are participating in. Projects will be locked after May 1 st and won’t be able to be changed. Just because you go to project meetings does not mean you are enrolled in the project. If you check your enrollment in March it will be one thing off of your to do list! Thank you for all you do for 4-H! -Candis Career Exploration Day Are you looking for something to do during Spring Break? Shawnee County 4-H is hosting our first Career Exploration Day on March 18th for youth 7th-12th grade. We are limited to 12 spots for this fun day. Registration will be at the Extension Office from 8am-8:15am. We will leave the Extension office and start touring businesses in Topeka and find out what people do there and how would someone get into that career. This will be a good time for youth to ask questions of various professionals or to just soak in all the opportunities they will be presented with. Our day will conclude at 5pm back at the Extension Office. We will tour the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Capital Federal, Hy-Vee and Kansas Rehab Hospital. A registration form will be available in this newsletter and at the Shawnee County Extension Office. Since space is limited your spot will not be guaranteed until payment is received. Registration will cost $15 and includes lunch and breakfast snacks for the day. When we did our Extension listening tour last year one of the areas the community thought 4-H could help with was work readiness for Shawnee County Youth. This is a part of that new initiative for 4-H and if it is popular we will plan more programs like this in the future.
Shawnee County 4-H will be posting event flyers that we are emailed on the Shawnee County website at www.shawnee.ksu.edu. Once you get to the homepage click on the 4-H tab which is on the left hand side and then click on event flyers. There you will find an up-dated list of events going on in Shawnee and surrounding counties. Please check this page on a regular basis for event flyers.

Livestock and Horse Judging Clinic
The Shawnee County Livestock and Horse Judging Clinic/Contest will be held on March 19, 2016 at the Kansas Expo Centre. Registration is from 12-12:45 p.m. and the contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. You can find this event flyer at www.shawnee.ksu.edu. Click on 4-H and then on event flyers.
Regional Club Days March 19th
Regional Club Days will be held at Wheatridge Middle School located at 318 E. Washington St, Gardner, KS 66030. The event starts at 8am and this year families will be able to sign up for when they would like to perform. A complete list of Top Purples and Top Blues qualified to advance to Regionals in on our website www.shawnee.ksu.edu if an alternate is needed we will contact those families directly.
The link to sign up will be available on our website starting March 4th at 4pm and the link will close on March 9
th at 5pm.
If you do not have a chance to sign up for a time one will be assigned to you after the sign up is closed.
Our County is responsible for monitoring three rooms so if you can help with that responsibility please e-mail Candis at [email protected]. This is a great job for youth who need a regional event for their pin award or some citizenship in their record book.

th. Our county camps with eight other counties at Rock Spring 4-H Camp just south of Junction City, Ks.
Camp is for youth who are currently in 1st grade through 7
th grade. Youth who are currently in 8
th grade through 12
th
grade can apply to be camp counselors. Camper registration is open March 1- May 2.
Rookie Camp for youth currently in 1st and 2
nd grade is filled on a first come first serve basis. It is a one night two day
camping experience. We have two sessions of Rookie Camp this year June 4th-5
th and June 6
th-7
th. If you would like a
particular session make sure to register early! The first session of Rookies will travel to Rock Springs with the big group and need to be picked up by their parent on the evening of the 5
th. The second session of rookies will need to be
brought to camp by their guardian on the 6th and then will travel back to Shawnee County with the big group. Rookies
are not allowed to attend both sessions.
Shawnee County provides transportation to and from camp for full time campers and counselors.
This year there will not be a part time counselor. Since there are two sessions of Rookie campers Rookie counselors will be there for all of camp. Counselor paper applications are due on April 22
nd and Counselor interviews will be the
evening of the 25th
and 26th
at the Extension office. Counselors have to report to camp on June 3rd
for counselor training.
Camper registration is online this year but counselor applications and registrations are still on paper. Links to the online registration can be found on the 4-H tab of www.shawnee.ksu.edu on March 1
st. We are once again using the Camp
Doc registration site. If you had a youth go to camp last year you will still be required to update their health information and emergency contacts.

The selection criteria and process for the 4-H Centennial Delegate is entirely up to the Extension Unit. To be eligible,
delegates MUST:
Have never before attended National 4-H Congress
Be enrolled in Kansas 4-H
Have a genuine desire to attend National 4-H Congress
Be available to attend 2016 National 4-H Congress in its entirety from Nov 25 - Nov 29, 2016
Be at least 14 years old but not yet 19 years old before January 1, 2016
Remain committed to attending 2016 National 4-H Congress once they accept the trip
Agree to the follow the prescribed code of conduct, realizing failure to do so may result in the loss of privileges during
the event and/or in the future
Participating Extension Units will need to notify the State 4-H Office on or before May 15, 2016, along with providing the
non-refundable $100.00 deposit and nomination form for the delegate. If you are interested you can get a nomination
form from Candis Meerpohl, 4-H Agent
On February 8th, we held our Auburn 4-H club at Auburn Elementary. Members were instructed to bring 2 or 3 handmade Valentine's to give to the Senior Citizens complex in Auburn. This is a February tradition for us, and we enjoy making Valentines for the senior citizens in our community. We handed them out a day before Valentine's day, and the residents loved them!

Shawnee Riders 4-H Club
Our club meeting this month was on February 16. Haley Culp gave a presentation on cats. One thing she talked about was the difference between cats and kittens. Kittens are juvenile cats. For refreshments we made pizza. We used biscuit dough and had the choice of olives and/or pepperoni for toppings. The dough stuck to the wax paper and some people had pizza plops! During recreation, we played freeze tag. Our next meeting will be March 15 at 7PM and we are looking forward to Candis Meerpohl the 4-H Youth Development Agent at the Extension office joining us. ~ Calista Covel , Reporter
Shawnee County Horse Club
The Shawnee County Horse Club met on January 28. We are very happy to welcome several new members that joined us in January. Everyone enjoyed the horse bingo Jesstine and Emily organized for recreation. They warned us not to eat the M&Ms they gave us for markers until after the game was over! -Jade Covel, Reporter
Indian Creek 4-H Club
For the February meeting, the Indian Creek 4-H club held a valentine baked goods auction to raise money for the YWCA Center for Empowerment. Most items went for anywhere between five to ten dollars with some selling for as high as $35.00! The club raised $325.00 and 4-Hers had lots of fun. ~Reporter Brody Elliott

Silver Lake 4-H Club
On February 7, 2016 the Silver Lake 4-H Club had their monthly meeting at 2:00pm. For the program, the members of the club performed what they were going to do at 4-H Days that next weekend. Martina, Maggie, and Mariah Royer sang songs, and Sierra Wilkerson performed a dance. After the Meeting, the club made a meal for the Adee family. They made lasagna, salad, and Hillbilly Cobbler. The Silver Lake 4-H Club made Valentine's to give to the Veterans at the VA Hospital. The Silver Lake 4-H club had fun doing these activities. --Anna Ruby, Reporter
Riverside 4-H Club
The Riverside 4H club did well individually and as a club during Club Days on Feb. 13th. Our club performed a group dance. Later that night, we met at Berryton United Methodist Church for our club potluck and movie night. This was to celebrate all of our success at Club Days.
