every year millions of americans make the nev-er ending resolution to lose weight but with thousands of diet plans, exercise programs,

weight loss supplements and theories about perma-nent weight loss where do you begin?

Many people are turning to personal trainers for help. nBc’s The Biggest Loser, is a reality show in which people form competing teams with a per-sonal trainer to reach their fitness goals. it popular-ity has people turning to this option to maximize their potential. Local fitness expert, LaDawn hladik is a personal fitness trainer at the yMca and she offers information about how a personal trainer can give you the edge you need to tip the scales.

• A personal trainer gets right to the problem and finds the solution.

“trainers spend time getting to know their cli-ents through a questionnaire and evaluation,” says hladik. “it’s the trainer’s job to find out why the cli-ent is hiring them and what benefits they hope to achieve. we weigh clients, test their body fat and set goals from that point.” The trainer then designs a fit-ness program unique to their needs and coaches them to reach their goals. • Trainers can keep you from falling off the band wagon.

Sometimes you need more than a walking buddy, someone one who knows what they’re doing and

won’t bail out. “trainers are the motivation some clients need just to visit the gym. Most clients feel compelled to quit making excuses for not visiting the gym when they have an obligation or commitment to a trainer,” says hladik. They also make programs enjoyable. “Fitness programs are designed with the client’s likes and dislikes in mind so the program is motivating and flows easily.”

• An expert will help you set realistic goals. unfortunately, even the best intentions can cause

you to set the most unrealistic goals, either because of pressure to drop weight quickly or from the influ-ence of media stereotypes. “Most people who give up don’t set realistic goals,” says hladik, “nor do they set specific objectives to achieve them. a personal trainer takes a unique approach in their design of a fitness program, working with their client to set real-istic goals, and specifically how they can meet them.”

• Personal trainers help you make lifestyle changes that lead to permanent weight loss.

Before you get too crazy and go to the extreme, sudden changes in your diet or routine can set you up for failure. “clients need to realize if they want to lose weight and keep it off they need to make lifestyle changes starting with diet and exercise. Most people

make drastic changes instead of slow, steady ones. Those drastic changes leave people feeling deprived and ultimately leads to failure,” warns hladik. “Per-sonal trainers are not dieticians or nutritionists but we can coach you on how to eat better foods.”

as to the trainers you may have seen on t.V., yell-ing and pushing their clients to the limit, hladik says no two trainers are alike. “all trainers are different in their approach. Finding one that fits your schedule and your personality are a must. if the fit is not right, neither the trainer nor the client will be satisfied.”

LaDawn hladik is a graduate of oSu with a BS in Leisure Sciences with an emphasis in Therapeutic recreation and a minor in athletic training. She is an aFaa (aerobics and Fitness association of america) certified Personal trainer and aFaa group exercise instructor at the newly renovated yMca where she has trained for 12 years.

The personal trainers and staff at the yMca invite you to see how a personal fitness trainer can help you reach your fitness goals. Visit their newly renovated facility for a tour at 700 w. Saratoga or to schedule an appointment with a fitness trainer, call 405-273-4386. Visit them online at www.shawneeymca.org

By the time you read this, it should be 2009. i hope you all had a great holiday Season, and i’m sure you’re excited about return-ing to school and to work! Before we delve

into this month’s topic, i need to give a `shout out’ to my oldest daughter, Sabrina. a few weeks ago, while reading my articles she said, “Dad, i like your articles, but you’ve mentioned everyone but me.” So Sabrina, this one’s for you!

Last month on Facebook, my good friend Shawn posted a note with the topic, “Movies that make me cry”. Several years ago, he and i saw “Mr. holland’s opus” with some other friends. towards the end of the movie, he began violently weeping so we dubbed him “The Sobber”.

of course, “Mr. holland’s opus” was on his Fa-cebook list, and there were several other sob-worthy films listed as well. (i’m not ashamed to admit that i occasionally cry during a movie!)

his posting became the subject for this article. recently i was watching surfing through channels on my new hDtV. (My christmas present from my wife- thanks honey!!)

“The Breakfast club”, one of my favorite movies, was showing on a movie channel. i am very familiar with it, and it neVer gets old! regardless of what point the story is when i find it, i will watch it to the very end with glazed eyes. i love it that much.

So i thought to myself; “what are some other movies that i always stop and watch?” i’ve compiled a list of these films (in no particular order), along with moments from each one that i love.

1. “hoosiers”- one of the many sports related films on my list. gene hackman was great in this one. Favorite moment- Jimmy chitwood shows up at the meeting where the town leaders are trying to fire coach gene hackman and says, “if coach stays, i stay- if he goes, i go.” Jimmy also saves the day in the big game. The team looks to him for the final shot, and he coolly says to all of them: “i’ll make it”. and he does, baby! cue inspirational music!!

2. “The natural”- one of the few cases where i thought the movie was much better than the book.

This is an ironic choice, because i’m not a big baseball fan. robert redford was lumines-cent. Favorite moment- roy hobbs’ bat, `won-der boy’, has just been broken, and roy looks at the chubby ball boy Bobby. he says, “Pick me out a winner, Bobby”. Bobby stammers “oK”, and brings him his hand made bat. (This is also a tear-up moment for me. Don’t ask me why.)

3. “a Few good Men”- Jack nicholson is the great-est actor who ever lived. My brother-in-law and i have memorized huge chunks of this movie, and we enjoy quoting them to each other. our wives never tire of this fun little game! Favorite moment- The court-room scene, and famous line; “you can’t handle the truth!!!”

4. “Forrest gump”- tom hanks gives a `tour de force’ performance as the simpleton, Forrest. There are many great pop culture references in this one.

Favorite moment- Forrest is in the hospital re-covering from a wound. when ice cream is served, he begins bellowing “ice cream! Don’t you want your ice cream Lt. Dan??” now almost every time i eat ice cream, i do my best Forrest gump impression. This film can move you to tears, especially when Forrest talks to his late friend Jennie at her grave.

5. “Batman Begins”- i’ve declared my `man love’ for the Batman in a previous article, so this should come as no surprise. (although “The Dark Knight” is better, it hasn’t yet been shown on tV, and can’t be included on my list.) i think christian Bale is by far the best Batman. Favorite moments- Batman hangs a crooked cop upside down, and then growls at him “Swear to me!!!!” also, when Batman makes his first appearance at the docks, you only see his shadow… Then, when he appears and thrashes the bad guys, i get chills every time i see this scene! (i’m such a dork…)

6. “The Breakfast club”- i was in high school when this came out, and i immediately loved it. it has a great cast, and today’s kids still like it. i identify most with Brian, the geek. (although in real life i was much cooler than he was.) Favorite moments- Principal Ver-non says to Bender, “you’re mine! i gotcha Bender- 2

months- you’re mine- i gotcha.” also- “you mess with the bull, you get the horns….” classic!!!

7. “Ferris Bueller’s Day off”- This is John hughes’ other teen masterpiece. what kid didn’t want to be Ferris? This is Matthew Broderick’s greatest role. Fa-vorite moments- when cameron sings “Let my cam-eron go”… also- when cameron calls Mr. rooney claiming to be Sloan’s father, rooney’s secretary pretends to be rooney as he stumbles around in the background. The “rooney” sounds that she made were priceless! “uuuhhhhh…”

8. “rocky 1-4”- i mainly like `rocky 3 and 4’, be-cause of the cartoonish opponents. Thunder lips? clubber Lang? ivan Drago? Man, if only real boxers had these personalities! Favorite moments- a fight reporter asks, “any predictions for the fight?” Mr. t says, “Pain…” also, one of my favorites is when Drago says, “i must break you”. another thing i love is how rocky gets pummeled through the whole fight, but always manages to find a way to win.

9. “Fletch”- This is the one that started it all for me. Back when i was a young freshman at oBu, i had a copy of this movie on VhS. (you remember what those are, don’t you?) My buddies and i must have watched this movie tonS of times that year, while eating pizza at midnight. Favorite moment- “yes, i’ll have a bloody Mary, a steak sandwich, and uh…a steak sandwich.”

well, that’s about it for now. i’ve shared with you some of my favorite films; at least the ones that pop up on television. These are the ones i will always watch. what about you? which movies will you al-ways stop and watch, no matter how many times you’ve seen them? if you see me, let me know- i’d love to talk about them over a hot cup of coffee. well, until next month, so long, and take care!

anyone living in Shawnee for more than a few years has noticed the revitalization of the downtown area. new stores and restaurants have opened, and more events have been added to the calendar in hopes of making downtown Shawnee an arts and entertainment destination. one area in need of improvement was venues for nightlife. But a new fun place has come to downtown Shawnee, so wait no lon-ger. The Bell Street Brickhouse has recently opened a new nightclub called `one’.

`one’ features a 5,000 square foot dance floor, seat-ing areas, stage for live entertainment, and a pair of well stocked bars with friendly, experienced waitresses and bar-tenders. The owners, Jeff Minix and Beau Bullock, are also the owners of Knuckle’s Pub. They have been planning and organizing this entertainment spot since 2000, and the planning shows.

upon entering, the purple walls, illuminated drink shelves, and great ambient lighting give the impression of the popular nightclubs in oklahoma city. The sound system pumps modern popular music and dance tracks from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The beat of the music is accentuated by digital graphics on a 15 foot video screen.

if dancing isn’t your thing, `one’ is a great place to just hang out with friends after work or school. grab a seat at one of the bars or in one of the several lounge areas, com-plete with tables and comfortable couches.

one’ is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. on Thursday, admission is free for anyone who wants to come and enjoy the atmosphere. on Friday and Saturday, men pay a three-dollar cover charge. Ladies are always free on club nights. (There is a cover charge for everyone when live bands play.)

`one’ will host a concert with “Metal Shop” live Satur-

day, January 10. This `eighties tribute’ band which recently won Bricktown’s battle of the bands, will rock your favorite metal tunes all night long.

The club will also host Karaoke weekly on wednesday nights! This will give you an opportunity to make music with your friends as well.

a dress code will be enforced at this new club. you will want to leave your baseball caps, bandanas, sweats and hoodies, and excessively baggy clothing at home. The goal of the club is to give you the feeling of a big city nightclub, where such clothing is not allowed.

now, you don’t have to drive out of town for the experi-ence of a “Big city club”. For more information, call 214-1111 or visit the Bell Street Brickhouse, at 113½ n Bell Street, Shawnee.

Most kids these days do well to remember to feed and water their pet, but 16 year old Stacey Stovall does much more with her dog than the average teenager. in less than two years, this Shawnee high School Junior has trained her australian Shepherd `crush’ from pup to na-tional champion.

Stacey’s bedroom wall is covered with rib-bons and trophies from her placements and winning in both aKc (american Kennel club) and aSca (australian Shepherd club of amer-ica) competitions. winners of dozens of first place awards, Stacey and `crush’ have scored four “high in trial” awards in obedience com-petitions with other breeds, as well as in those exclusively for australian Shepherds. These awards not only put `crush’ at the top locally and nationally, but Stacey as well. working out of the oklahoma city obedience training club, Stacey also holds several awards in “high Scor-ing Junior,” which are given to highest scoring handlers among junior competitors.

Beginning with a Border collie, Stacey start-ed training at age 11, and began showing dogs when she was thirteen. “Someone told me about a place where they trained dogs for shows. They showed demos of the three different levels of obedience training and i started taking classes and stuck with it.” Stacey has placed in nearly event she has entered in oklahoma, texas and Kansas. She has also competed in Las Vegas, nevada.

` crush’ was bred for a different kind of show known as “conformation”, due to the structure of her breed and the status of her physical quali-ties. however, the dog was born with an “under shot,” a slight condition involving the dog’s bite, which disqualified her from ever being a confor-mation show dog.

it almost seems that `crush’ was born for Stacey. “The owner was looking for a good home,” says Stacey “and i was looking for a good

dog.” The breeder, Leon goetz, gave the pick of the litter, crush to Stacey at no charge. “it was really nice because she’s a very expensive dog.”

when a dog with crush’s energy, personal-ity and intelligence meets a handler like Stacey, a beautiful friendship grows. “it’s fun because that bond is one of a kind and you’re that much closer to your dog than anybody else,” says Sta-cey. “Most dogs know basic stuff, but its’ just fun when they like to work and [training] is one of

She has a lot of personality and you can see it by the expressions on her face.”

obedience training is also something that Sta-cey says has made her responsible. “it gave me a sense of accomplishment and that much more mo-tivation to keep up the dedicated work. That dedi-cation also transferred into my ever day life, like keeping up with school work and managing mul-tiple things at once without compromising quality. Bad grades meant no dog training and showing. Poor training and an unprepared dog would be a waste of money and an embarrassment to me as a trainer and handler. it really teaches you a lot of life skills that you don’t even think about otherwise.”

Stacey’s future plans include working with dogs. “i want to be a vet but i also want to do some-thing with dog training. i’ve always wanted to do a rescue center where the dogs have some training because in my mind i’m thinking, ‘hey would you rather have a cute dog or a dog that’s cute and obe-dient?’ i think it would help give dogs more homes. as long as dogs are in my life, i’ll be alright.”

Stacey currently helps teach obedience classes at the oklahoma city obedience training club. For more information about dog training, visit www.ocotc.org

those things you both love. you accomplish some-thing and it’s always fun to win.”

in addition to all the basic commands taught at obedience training like speak, fetch and heel, Stacey is also training crush for more complicated obedience. “Judges write up things a dog must do in order to get their titles like technical tricks and command. a lot of them are like fetching over a jump, sit stays, down stays, and scent articles. you’re handed an object that is put into a box and your dog has to pick up the object that you touched in a pile of 12 other things.”

Though it’s not as hard as teaching an old dog new tricks, Stacey says it takes work. “we’re work-ing on scent articles right now. it’s one of those things where she looks at me and her face says, ‘i know you want something…i don’t know what is yet but i know you want something,” laughs Stacey. “She gives me a little whine and cocks her head to the side, trying to figure it out.”

in addition to being a great show dog, `crush’ is a companion with a great personality. “if i’m up-set, she comes up to me and kisses me and when i’m excited she runs in circles and shows excite-ment. She loves kids because they’re just her size and they run from her so she can chase them. She’s not shy a bit and loves to be the center of attention.

these days we’re finding out that no one is really safe in this ever changing econ-omy as it shifts with the global tides. Kennith Moore is no stranger to tough times. Like so many oklahomans, he

knows how to dig his heels into the ground, roll with the punches and still come out on top.

today Ken Moore is at the top of his game, stak-ing his claim in Pre-Paid Legal over twenty years ago, not long after the company was started by harland Stonecipher. Moore is executive Vice President of Pre-Paid Legal and the first three generation family to attain the company’s highest income status at 6 figures a year. Looking back, Moore tells the story of a rough ride to the top.

twenty five years ago, he owned a butcher and slaughterhouse business that was soon to be bank-rupt. “we bought the product [Pre-Paid Legal]; we liked the product. i was too busy going broke in a business to sell Pre-Paid. i thought it was a good product but i didn’t think you could make any money to be honest with you. Finally after using the product, i really liked it. i saw someone selling it to

my employees and changed my mind. i looked into it and about that time went bankrupt.”

with the failure of his business, he packed up his wife and 9 year old daughter and moved to tulsa in 1985. with only $1,000 he borrowed from his sis-ter in law, they rented a cheap apartment and saved $400 in two weeks for the next month’s rent. un-fortunately the transmission went out in his car and forced him to come up with an additional $400 to keep his car running.

it was a very hard time for Ken and his family. “i didn’t know if i’d make enough full time Pre-Paid to even pay the rent or not. i had hoped and believed in it but knowing is something else when you have no other income.” his wife and daughter cried for a month because, “we’d just lost everything we had.”

it was ‘do or die’ it seemed for Moore who

worked tirelessly, almost beyond reason to make it. he would park his humble car down the street when he visited prospects so they wouldn’t see it and lived on peanut butter and crackers everyday for lunch. “i was very despondent those days because of losing everything,” says Moore. But he didn’t give up. he stayed up into the night so he could visit with night-shift workers and visit all-night restaurants where he approached anyone and everyone who would lis-ten to the opportunity that would take him to the top.

“gradually things started picking up for me. By the time i had been with Pre-Paid Legal six months, i made $48,600. i figured i’d found me a home. Things were looking up for me. i had a little of my self pride back.”

Paid Legal home office in ada and contin-ued to build his business alongside his wife, Shirlene. he worked closely with ceo and President harland Stonecipher and company executives during the ups and downs of Pre-Paid Legal and played a vital role in the chang-es that would ultimately push the company to unprecedented success. Things couldn’t have been better until health problems began to plague Ken.

in the last ten years Moore has endured more than thirty surgeries, three of them were for open heart surgery. “They’ve lost me twice on the operating table, but i guess god isn’t done using me just yet,” said Moore. “if it wasn’t for him, some of the best surgeons around, and having something to do every-day, i don’t think i’d still be here.”

in spite of his health struggles, Moore is anything but bitter. “right now i couldn’t

be happier,” says Moore. “i get to come do something i love, with people that love me. i’ve been partners in family, life and business with my wife Shirlene for more than 50 years now and because Pre-Paid is a company with such integrity and honor, my son randy and his son now work with us full time.”

harland Stonecipher reflects on Moore’s career: “Kennith Moore is a real life example of ‘only in america’ and the free enterprise system at work at its best. he is truly a rags to riches story.”

Kennith Moore’s story inspires us all to pursue opportunity, no matter the obstacles or how we started life, and to never give up. it reminds us that failure is only temporary and the chance to grow if you keep going. Thanks for the inspiration and the reminder, Ken. we need it.

Suppressed Immune System

DefinitionDuring the flu epidemic of 1917-1918, both chiropractors and osteopaths noticed that their patients had a lower fatality rate, 0.25% than the medical profession at 5-6%. The conclusion of a paper written in 1919 was that subluxations suppressed the immune system, and that removing them assisted the immune function. Now newer research shows that white blood cells increase with chiropractic adjustments. A smaller study showed that the immune response of HIV-positive patients increased as measured by their CD4 count with chiropractic adjustments. So the next time you want to cancel your appointment because your too sick, remember a chiropractic adjustment is just what the doctor ordered.

must be over the age of 18.So, what is required of a Big? Simply spend

time with the child. in the community-based program, the Big is asked to spend a few hours per week with his or her `Little’. Fishing, playing catch, shopping, or even going on a picnic are all ways matched pairs can spend time together for little or no expense. Bigs are also encouraged to introduce Littles to their own hobbies. time can be spent gardening or bird watching, as well as simply playing video games together.

Big Brothers Big Sisters also offers a school-based program, which requires even less time of the mentor. in the school-based program, the Big visits the Little’s school for one hour a week. The matched pair can then do homework, play games, read together, or spend time on the playground.

Jake Montgomery has been the Big Brother of a 14-year-old boy for about six months. Jake

now that the seasons of giving thanks and giving back have come and gone, the holidays are behind us. we now

look forward to the new year, typically a time for goal setting and personal improvement. January also brings an opportunity to give back to those in need through national Mentoring Month.

a mentor is defined as “an influential senior sponsor or supporter”; “a trusted counselor or teacher.” Mentoring requires spending time with another, for the purpose of exerting a positive influence. often, people would like to serve as a mentor, but don’t know where to turn or how to get started. There is as organization in Shawnee that exists for just that purpose. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shawnee matches men and women with children in need of positive role models.

all the children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are between the ages of 6 and 14, and are referred by family, teachers, or school counselors. currently, there are 22 boys and 5 girls awaiting matches. girls are matched to female `Bigs’, while boys can be matched to either male `Bigs’or cou-ples who wish to mentor a child together. all Bigs

chose to get involved in the program as a chance to do something good for someone else. he and his little brother go to the mall together, and when the weather warms up they plan to go fish-ing more often. They also take occasional trips to Frontier city and are planning a trip to Six Flags. Jake says he has no problem fitting time for his Little Brother into his schedule. “we spend ev-ery Saturday together, and i give him a call on wednesdays just to make sure he’s doing oK.”

Jake says that his Little Brother isn’t the only one benefiting from the program. “i’ve learned a lot from my Little Brother. also, it just feels good to help someone. hopefully he’ll want to take the example and be a Big and do some good for some-one else some day. There’s no better feeling in the world than that.”

on January 13, 2009 crystal Darkness is coming. There will be a statewide showing of crystal Darkness, a made in oklahoma,

starring oklahomans, informational tV show that targets methamphetamine use in oklahoma and the toll it is taking on our state. it will emphasize how important it is for youth not to get involved with meth in any way. communities are urged to set up “watch parties” in their homes, churches and places of business on that night to watch the special together. Some might say, “what good will it do law-abiding citizens to watch this show? we don’t use meth and neither do our kids!”

when asked this question, Sallie McLaughlin, executive Director of gateway to Prevention and recovery, smiles and says, “a community watch party here in Shawnee is how gateway started back in 1983. we came together to watch “chemical Peo-ple” and the rest is history.” what that little group of individuals discussed that night, after watching chemical People, was the lack of resources for par-ents whose children were caught up in alcohol and other drug abuse to get help. There were others in the community who needed help with their ad-dictions and there was no place to send them or a way to find out what was “out there” in the state. So gateway started with a card table, a telephone and volunteers in a donated office. today gateway has offices in Shawnee, chandler and is piloting a program at the prison in Boley. The area Preven-tion resource center at gateway covers Lincoln,

Seminole, Pottawatomie and okfuskee counties. gateway is a united way agency that employs over 30 treatment and prevention personnel. in fact, when crystal Darkness airs on January 13th, staff from gateway will be working late to field emer-gency phone calls from people seeking help.

Shawnee will have a community-wide watch party, complete with free goodies and great door prizes at the ritz Theatre on Main Street. The doors will open at 6PM and the show will start at 6:30. a panel of experts will be available for ques-tions afterward.

if you are interested in hosting a watch party in your home or at your church or business, call the gateway Prevention offices at 405-275-3391, or e-mail [email protected]. The preventionists there can help you with refresh-ments, door prizes and other arrangements you may need for a successful watch party.
