RAZOR AWARENESSRenowned stylist and educator Nick Arrojo has

teamed up with MiladyPro (miladypro.com) to

offer online courses on razor cutting, featuring

his signature technique, so who better to ask

for advice on the cutting-edge craft? Here, he

serves up some technical tips.

On proper form: Incorrect hand and body positioning lead to inconsistencies in your cut. Holding the razor properly will help you maintain control when using a range of motions and cutting techniques. When positioning is not maintained, a stylist can inadvertently produce differences in elevation and tension—for example, creating gradation in a shape when you are trying to achieve a blunt line. Your body position further infl uences the cut you are crafting by establishing your razor’s reach, elevation angles, over-direction options and more.On using a comb: When working with a razor, practice holding it with and without a comb. Unlike with shears, where the comb is often used to hold hair in place as you cut, you always want to use your fi ngers with a razor for control and versatility. When you do use a comb, you will be using it to maintain strong, even tension. On safety: First, always be aware of where the razor is. It should remain in the “closed” position while it is not in use. Proper hand and body positioning are also necessary for safety, to ensure the razor does no harm to you or your clients.
