SHEEP GENERAL : UREA WARNING (only where and if appropriate/applicable) Vinegar is an effective remedy against NPN poisoning. Mix with an equal amount of water. Dose half a bottle per calf or large sheep or 2 - 4 bottles per head of cattle (1 bottle = 750 ml). Protect this farm feed against rain. NPN is soluble and animals drinking such a solution could be poisoned. This feed contains a NPN source - feed strictly according to feed recommendation. Do not feed this farm feed indiscriminately with other NPN containing farm feeds. Consult an animal scientist. Good quality roughage and/or grazing should always be available. When replacing a NPN-free feed with a NPN consisting feed, it is recommended to feed an adaptation period of 4 - 6 days, in which the feed is mixed 50/50.

SHEEP GENERAL: UREA WARNING (only where and if appropriate/applicable)

• Vinegar is an effective remedy against NPN poisoning. Mix with an equal amount of water. Dose half a bottle per calf or large sheep or 2 - 4 bottles per head of cattle (1 bottle = 750 ml).

• Protect this farm feed against rain. NPN is soluble and animals drinking such a solution could be poisoned.

• This feed contains a NPN source - feed strictly according to feed recommendation. Do not feed this farm feed indiscriminately with other NPN containing farm feeds. Consult an animal scientist.

• Good quality roughage and/or grazing should always be available. • When replacing a NPN-free feed with a NPN consisting feed, it is recommended to

feed an adaptation period of 4 - 6 days, in which the feed is mixed 50/50.

GUIDELINES:

FEEDLOT (SHEEP): The following actions are of critical importance to take into consideration when feeding animals in a feedlot:- a) treatment of parasites, internally and externally, b) vaccinating against pulpy kidney and other respiratory illnesses (contact your

veterinarian). c) when growth stimulants are used. Adaptation (10 - 14 days): Sheep eat 3,5 - 4,2% of their body weight. Adaptation of animals, which grazes on a diet of grain(s), is a very important aspect of the results achieving in a feedlot. Start with Sheep Grower at 400 grams per lamb per day – ½ thereof in the mornings and the other ½ in the afternoons. Increase the portion with 100 grams per lamb per day until lambs/sheep are eating ad lib (ad libitum – at pleasure). Lucerne, or any other high quality roughage, must be available ad lib for the first 14 days. Manger space: 20cm per animal during an adaptation phase 10cm per animal after adaptation phase Floor space: 1,5 - 2,5m² per animal Drinking water: Clean water mangers twice daily. Lambs drink 4 - 6 litre water per day. LAMBS – CREEPING FEED: ADVANTAGES OF USE CREEPING FEED:-

- Promotes rumen development - Lambs will grow faster - Lambs will wean easier without weaning shock - Lambs will weigh heavier at weaning time and adapt more easily to/in feedlot - A must in the early weaning system -

Troughs - for creeping feeds - must preferably have the facility to be covered so that it could

TW LAMB SHED CRUMBS [V23927]: Ewes with twins: Ewes must be adapted by making use of TW Lamb Shed Crumbs for optimal utilization and consumption of nutritional stuffs within these crumbs. The adaptation has the effect that ewes will produce efficient milk and that they will receive strong, healthy lambs from 4 – 5 kg, when born. This young lambs will have a much better chance to survive and the wean weight will also be heavier. When the feeding with TW Lamb Shed Crumbs commences, all lick additives must stop. Adapt as follows:- 4 weeks prior to casting the young – 500 grams per day 3 weeks prior to casting the young – 750 grams per day 2 weeks prior to casting the young – 1 kg per day 1 week prior to casting the young – 1,25 kg per day After lambing, ewes with twins must be fed 2,5 kg per ewe per day for 75 days until lambs are weaned. Licks must be given for the other part of the 8 month cycle, i.e. 4½ months, at an average of 300 grams per day. Lamb must have access to TW Creeping pellets before they are leaving the sheds, where lambing has taken place, on day 3 – 5. A lamb utilizes ±25 kg creeping pellets up until weaned. Ewes with single lambs: Adapt as follows:- 2 weeks prior to casting lambs – 500grams per day 1 week prior to casting lambs – 750grams per day 3 days in lambing sheds – 2kg per ewe per day If sufficient food for ewes with single lambs lacks/is not available, 1 kg TW Lamb shed crumbs per day may be fed. For the other 4½ months of the 8 month cycle, lick must be given at ±300 grams per ewe per day.

Adapt as follows:- Make “long hay” (grass) or lucerne available, ad lib, and start with concentrated feeds at 400 grams per lamb per day and increase the amount/quantity by 100 grams per day afterwards.

EWES: EWES WITH TWINS: Ewes must be adapted with TW Lamb shed crumbs for optimal utilization and digestion of nutrients within the crumbs. The adaptation causes that the ewes produce sufficient and enough milk, and that strong healthy lambs of 4 – 5kg are born. They will have a better chance of survival and will reach heavier weaning weights as a result. When starting with the TW Lamb shed crumbs, all lick additions must stop. Adapt as follows:- 4 weeks before lambing - 500 gram per day 3 weeks before lambing - 750 gram per day 2 weeks before lambing - 1 kg per day 1 week before lambing - 1,25 kg per day After lambing, ewes with twins must receive 2,5kg per ewe per day (of the product) for 75 days until lambs are weaned. For the remaining 4½ months of the 8 month lambing cycle, lick must be given at an average of 300 grams per day. Lambs must have free access to the TW Lamb shed crumbs before leaving the lamb sheds on day 3 – 5. A lamb utilizes ±25kg creeping crumbs until weaned. EWES WITH SINGLES: Adapt as follows:- 2 weeks before lambing - 500 gram per day 1 week before lambing - 750 gram per day 3 days in lamb sheds - 2 kg per ewe per day If there is not enough food available for ewes with singles, 1 kg TW Lamb shed crumbs per day can be given to ewes. For the remaining 4½ months of the 8 month cycle a lick must be given at ±300 gram per ewe per day.

Page 12: SHEEP - telwiedre.co.za Sheep.pdf · Sheep finisher is a ration for feedlot purposes, ... all lick additives must stop. ... 1 week prior to casting the young ...

SHEEP – CRAWLING FEED EWES: The higher the weaning percentage and weaning weight are, the greater the profit will be. A successful harvest of lambs already starts 6 weeks prior to births. Up to 80% of all lamb mortalities have a direct correlation with the feeding of the ewes during the last few weeks of pregnancy and immediately after lambing. With the right feeding program during the last stadia of pregnancy the udder development will be better, the quantity and quality of colostrums milk will be better and the milk production will be higher. The result will be a better immune system amongst the lambs and heavier wean weights. 85% of fetus growth takes place during the last 2 months of pregnancy which will limit the rumen capacity of the ewes, as well as the amount of food eaten – especially with ewes with twins.

FETUS DEVELOPMENT DURING PREGNANCY

Telwiedrè Feeds has got a full range of lick products for all types of pastures which can meet the need of every ewe. With a combination of soya oil cake, full fat soya, sunflower oil cake and gluten 20 high levels of flow through (bypass) protein are supplied. The following licks can be used as a stimulating feed, or steam up lick, or lactating lick:- TELWIEDRÈ EWE LICK – recommended for winter months when animals are grazing on harvest remains, or on dry winter pastures or on autumn veldt. TELWIEDRÈ MISPA SUPER 18 – recommended for animals on green pastures and early summer veldt. TELWIEDRÈ GREEN PASTURE LICK – recommended for animals on high quality green pastures which provide sufficient food.

Page 13: SHEEP - telwiedre.co.za Sheep.pdf · Sheep finisher is a ration for feedlot purposes, ... all lick additives must stop. ... 1 week prior to casting the young ...

MILK PRODUCTION

LAMBS: Ewes reach their peak milk production at ±3 to 4 weeks after lambing. Ewes on a low nutrient level reach their peak milk production approximately one week earlier. After peak phase the milk production decreases and the nutritional needs of lambs increase. Lambs are growing on their maximum genetic potential if ewes are at their peak/top milk production stadium. With the right creeping feeds lambs will maintain this growth potential when the milk production of ewes declines. At the age of 4 – 6 weeks 50% of the nutritional needs of the lambs will be supplied through other sources than only from the milk of the ewes. It emphasizes the fact that good food and creeping feed have a result of a higher weaning weight. The rumen capacity of lambs is still small and not yet fully developed at this age. So if ewes graze on poor pastures, lamb growth will drop because of a lack of sufficient nutrients, if crawling feeds are not provided with it. Green fresh fodder limits the rumen capacity of the lamb and the high moisture content of the feed limits the amount of nutrients that can be taken. Creeping feed can be given from the 10th day onwards. At first the intake will be very low – the benefit is that the older lambs will teach the young ones to go through the gates to the food. Creeping feed must always be fresh, from a very high quality and preferably urea free for up to the age of 60 days. Creep feed troughs must be placed in such a way that lambs have free access to it. It should be placed either near water, or lick bowls or where ewes are sleeping. Feeding space must preferably 5cm per lamb with a minimum of 2,5cm per lamb. TELWIEDRÈ LAMB CREEPING CRUMBS, which contains 18% protein and are urea free, can be given up till 60 days of age. TELWIEDRÈ SHEEP GROWER PELLETS, which contains 15% protein, with 91% natural protein, can be given from 60 days of age onwards until weaned. Lambs are eating an average of 300 to 350g of creeping feed per day, which has the effect of ±25kg to 30kg of creeping feed up until weaned. The quantity of creeping feed that is utilized, vary and is influence by the following factors:- 1. Quality and quantity of pastures 2. Wean age 3. Single or multiple offspring 4. Nutritional status of ewes (sufficient lick). 5. Palatability of creeping feed THE TABLE UNDERNEATH WILL SET OUT CREEPING FEED INTAKES, LAMB MASS AND CREEPING FEED

BENEFITS OF CREEPING FEED: - contribute to rumen development which consists of two aspects, i.e. firstly the physical size and volume and secondly the thickening of the rumen “wall”, as well as the development and lengthening of the rumen papillae (viz. small fingerlike projections,

which are flattened -approximately 5 mm in length and 3 mm wide). Especially grains are primarily responsible for the development of the rumen. - Lambs grow much better and can weigh up to 10 to 20% heavier at the same age and sometimes even more. - Lambs can be marketed earlier – between 28 and 50 days – which make early weaning easier. - When lambs are weaned earlier it gives ewes longer periods to rest which lead to better condition during the next mating season – that will increase lamb percentage during the next cycle. - Lambs are weaned much easier and will have no, or very low, weaning shock. - There will be no need to adapt lambs to be round off in a feedlot system, with the pre- requisite that creeping feed is available ad lib. - Higher profits are achieved in the feedlot because the feeding time of lambs is shorter. - Female lambs, which receive creeping feed, have got a higher lifetime-re-production capability because of higher ovulation rate. - Harness the positive feed conversion ratio of young lambs to produce more meat per kg feed fed. - Certain feedlots pay a premium for lambs which are fed on creeping feed.

RESULTS ACHIEVE WITH CREEPING FEED ON MUTTON MERINO LAMBS: Ewes lamb from 1 August up to 10 September annually. They graze on green/fresh fodder (soilage) until end August and then on Smutsvinger pastures with Telwiedrè Mispah Super 18 lick. 80 Ewes has got 106 lambs ∴ thus 132% wean percentage and ewes were on a 9

month lamb cycle. Start with the Telwiedrè Lamb Creeping product on the 18th of August up

until the 30th of October and then Telwiedrè Sheep grower when they are in the creep shed.

The largest lambs were weaned on 1 November and the rest on 15 November. Only ram

lambs were fed and slaughtering took place as follows:-

2 Dec. – average slaughter weight 27kg

7 Dec. – average slaughter weight 25,7kg

21 Dec. – average slaughter weight 23,4kg

18 Jan. – average slaughter weight 25kg

SAMM lambs have got the potential to reach a slaughter weight of 25kg on/over 120 days. If a

lamb weigh 50kg on/over 120 days, minus 5kg birth weight, SAMM lambs have the potential

to grow 375g per day from date of birth up to date of wean. Lambs ate 23kg creeping meal

per lamb till 30 October and 1,8kg grower meal per day in the shed/kraal. It is highly

profitable to utilize early growing potential of lambs.

Ewes start lambing on 1 April for the next 8 month cycle. Ewes were scanned during January

with the following results:-

Ewes with twins - 30%

Ewes with singles - 62.5%

Ewes without any lambs - 7.5%

From the above-mentioned results it is clearly visible that it will be very profitable to use

creeping feed.

NUTRITION IN AN INTENSIVE LAMBING SYSTEM

RAMS:

To have a highly fertile herd, highly fertile rams must be used or bought which can breed a

ewe offspring which is much more fertile. A ram contributes 75% of the genetic progress

within a herd. Scrotum circumference for mating time must be at least 35cm. Rams with

larger testis breed ewes with larger ovaries which ovulate earlier and secrets more egg cells.

Breeding rams must receive the right nutrition 2 months prior to mating time, because it

takes 63 days for a sperm to develop. Feed rams the TW SHEEP GROWER PELLETS at 2kg per

ram per day with good roughage, like lucerne, from 2 months prior to breeding season.

Exercise rams regularly and does the necessary fertility tests (rams).

Page 16: SHEEP - telwiedre.co.za Sheep.pdf · Sheep finisher is a ration for feedlot purposes, ... all lick additives must stop. ... 1 week prior to casting the young ...

EWES:

MATING TIME (0 – 50 DAYS):-

The condition of ewes throughout a year has got a great influence on the lamb percentage of

ewes in the herd. Multiple births are highly dependent on the conditions of ewes during

mating, because it is one of the main factors that determine ovulation rate.

EARLY AND MID PREGNANCY (50 – 100 DAYS):-

The following characteristics are positively influenced if ewes receive good nutrition at early

and mid pregnancy, when the placenta is developing:-

- Birth weight

- Wool production during lifetime

- Thickness of fibre

- Growth of lambs up till 12 – 15 months of age

- Lifetime re-production

- Milk production of ewes

LATE PREGNANCY (100 – 150 DAYS):-

72% of the growth of a lamb is developing during this period. Primary wool follicle

development is taking place now, as well as the development of colostrums and the amount of

milk produced during lactation. Ewes with twins must gain at least 15kg in weight during this

phase. Ewes, which lamb within a condition point of between 3 to 3,5, have got a minimum

lamb mortally. Just be careful for overweight ewes which tend to lead to metabolic

disturbances and milk fever.

NUTRITION:

MATING TIME:-

During preparation, feed ewes TW LAMB SHED CRUMBS with high quality roughage at 300 gram

per ewe per day. When ewes are sponged, increase intake to 500 gram per ewe per day.

When rams are removed, lower the intake to 300 gram per ewe per day for the following 2

weeks. Then change to TW SHEEP GROWER PELLETS at 300 gram per ewe per day with good

quality roughage or veldt pastures, or otherwise, remain on 500 gram per ewe per day if

roughage is too little or of a poor quality. Stay on this nutrition until 6 weeks prior to lambing

time.

LAMBING:-

From 6 weeks prior to lambing feed TW LAMB SHED CRUMBS as follows:-

- 6 weeks prior to lambing - 500 gram per ewe per day

- 5 weeks prior to lambing - 750 gram per ewe per day

- 4 weeks prior to lambing - 1,000 gram per ewe per day (2 feedings)

Page 17: SHEEP - telwiedre.co.za Sheep.pdf · Sheep finisher is a ration for feedlot purposes, ... all lick additives must stop. ... 1 week prior to casting the young ...

- 3 weeks prior to lambing - 1,25 kg per ewe per day (2 feedings)

- 2 weeks prior to lambing - 1,50 kg per ewe per day (2 feedings)

- Until lambing time - 1,50 kg per ewe per day (2 feedings)

After lambing time, give ewes TW LAMB SHED CRUMBS, ad lib, when in sheds. Intake varies from

2 – 3,5kg per ewe per day depending on the size of the ewe and the quantity of lambs she has

got. When ewes leave the sheds, give TW LAMB SHED CRUMBS at 2,5kg per ewe per day with

good roughage up till 4 – 6 days prior to wean of lambs. Withdraw all additional additives on

4 to 6 days prior to weaning to minimize the milk production of the ewes. Re-start at 300

gram per ewe per day from the fourth day after lambs are weaned.

LAMBS:

Lambs must received creeping feed from leaving the sheds – use TW LAMB CREEPING CRUMBS up

until the age of ±6 weeks and change to TW SHEEP GROWER PELLETS in troughs. After weaned,

the lambs must be placed in a feedlot – give it TW SHEEP GROWER PELLETS with lucerne for the

first 10 days, after which the lucerne must be taken away.

HPC’S:

Telwiedrè Feeds also have a full range of HPC-products (high protein concentrates) for home

or self mixing of rations.
