THIS WEEK THE SANCTUARY LAMP BURNS
FOR SPECIAL INTENTIONS
SANCTUARY LAMP: the lamp hanging in the sanctuary, when lit, indicates the Real Presence of Christ, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, reserved in the Tabernacle (the veil of the Tabernacle indicates the same reality). The flickering light is also a sign of the prayers of the faithful which remain after they have left the parish church. This is the whole purpose of votive lights, which we have before images of the Sacred Heart, Our Lady, St Joseph, etc. The suggested offering is $20.00.
FROM THE PARISH PRIEST Fishers of Men Today the Gospel tells of a miracle and a vocation. When Our Lord called Simon Peter to be His follower, He won His admiration by working a miracle. Simon was a fisherman. On the particular occasion we hear of today, he had had an unsuccessful night’s fishing. Our Lord told him to put his faith in Him and throw out the nets once more, on the other side of the boat. Having done as He suggested, Simon was astonished to find that he had caught a huge number of fish. Our Lord told Simon that he would “become a fisher of men”.
FEAST OF THE WEEK St Cyril and St Methodius (d. 869 & 885) Cyril was a secular priest and Methodius was a monk in a Greek monastery. They set out together to evangelise the Slavic peoples, commencing their work in Moravia, and in the process they adapted the Greek liturgy and alphabet to the language of the Slavs, from whom are descended the Russians, Bulgarians and Ukranians. Cyril died in Rome whilst on a visit to the Pope and was buried in St Clement’s Basilica where his remains are still venerated. Methodius was made Bishop of Moravia and continued the work they both had started. In 1980, Pope John Paul II, himself a Polish Slav, declared these brothers Patrons of Europe.
Do not be afraid. If the Lord is calling you to the ordained or consecrated life, do not be afraid. Jesus calls and will give you the grace to respond wholeheartedly. If you think God is calling you to be a priest, religious or deacondiscouraged by jeers when considering religious life or priesthood. If you think God is calling you to be a priest, religious or deacon, contact Fr. Chris Lemieux, Vocation Director, Archdiocese of Toronto 416-968-0997
