A Message From Senior Pastor Renee Patterson
The Reformation was the time in history when there was division in the Roman Catholic Church (the only Christian church around) and a monk called Martin Luther saw that the true faith was no longer being taught to the people (along with many other egregious practices). So, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses (also called proclamations) to the church door for all to read. This act (and others) led to the split in the church; and a new group called the Protestants emerged. Interestingly, Martin Luther didn’t want to start anything new; he actually wanted the people to return to their faith foundations and roots. So...the Reformation was not about anything new, but about returning to the unchanged and unchanging Truth of God. So it is still today. The celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation is not about creating anything new, but a return to the Truth that is ours in Christ Jesus. It was and is a time to return: to the Truth, to the basics, to the foundations of our faith. One of the tools that Martin Luther wrote for the common people to use for the building of their faith was the Small Catechism. Do you remember the Small Catechism? Many of us were made to memorize the catechism (or at least part of it) during our Confirmation classes. Some of us might have even suffered through a public examination over its contents. Martin Luther said that outside of the Bible the Small Catechism was THE faith formation tool for the people! So, what IS the Small Catechism? The catechism teaches the fundamentals of the Christian faith: the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, the Sacraments of Baptism and Communion and Confession/Forgiveness. This little book teaches us what these things are and what they mean for us. This small book is well worth your time and study! Luther wrote the Small Catechism for the instruction of laypeople. Luther intended the Small Catechism to be used at church and in the home to instruct children in the faith and to reinforce the faith in the hearts and minds of adults. And what better time to return to the teachings in the Small Catechism than the 500th year anniversary of its inception? So JOIN US! We will be spending some time this fall exploring what this tool still means for the people of God and how it can still deepen our faith in Jesus Christ. When: Sept 14 at 7:00pm for 1 hour (and the 2nd Thursday of the month after that, so mark your calendars!!) Where: Here at Shepherd Who: EVERYONE is welcome!! What do I have to bring? NOTHING! Just come and learn! May this celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation be a time when we return to the Word and to the Sacraments as we deepen our understanding of Christ and His Love for us. Did you know that we (the entire Lutheran church) are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation this fall? But….what exactly IS the Reformation, what did it do for the church (and for you for that matter) and why should we still be talking about it 500 years later?

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:4 Anniversary Celebration In honor of Pastor Renee’s second anniversary at Shepherd of the Hills the Governing Board had a small celebration at our last meeting. Since she was brought to us by the Holy Spirit we had Dove bars. We also recited a psalm adapted by Lynn Mears specifically for Pastor Renee. Kidamali Ambassador’s Report Recently two volunteers made a visit to Kidamali. This was part of Bega Kwa Bega’s ambassador program which sends people to Tanzania to visit companion congregations on behalf of partners in the St. Paul Area Synod. We received a report from our ambassadors about their trip. They reported that there was “much energy and joy” in the Kidamali church. Their report also included a picture of the new roof of the church there that Shepherd had contributed to after it was damaged in a storm last December. The people of the Kidamali Parish continue to pray for us at Shepherd of the Hills. Taking Care of Business We spent a good portion of our meeting discussing Shepherd’s July financial results which were below budget for the third month in a row. By now you may have seen the letter from the Governing Board to the congregation discussing this. It has been put into the Sunday bulletin , mailed to the members and also posted on the website. If you haven’t read it yet please take the time to do so. Also, please listen to Pastor Renee’s sermon from August 6th When we approved a budget for the year we based the giving on some conservative assumptions. As a result, there is nothing we can cut without reducing our ministries or straining our staff. Please prayerfully look at your life and finances and decide if there is anything more you can do to help us so that we can continue to reach, ignite and empower people for Jesus. Goodbye and Welcome We have appreciated the work that Cory Ramel has been doing with Shepherd’s high school youth. That mission has been reinvigorated and is reaching many more youth. Thank you Cory! So, you may wonder that we are not concerned that Cory has decided to end his employment at Shepherd. That is because there is a new volunteer who will be able to pick up where Cory left off and continue almost as if Cory were still working here. The new volunteer is Cory Ramel. Yay God!

LYN Ministry Conversation
LYN Ministry invites you to their annual conversation/training on how to partner with our
neighbors. This year’s conversation will be focused on how we walk alongside of those living
with dementia. What is dementia? What does it mean to support
those with dementia? What does it mean to support those who have loved ones living with
dementia? It will take place on Thursday, September 28th
from 2:00pm-3:30pm, beginning with a half hour of social time leading into an hour of
focused conversation led by your church staff and LYN Ministry leadership.
REMEMBERING Aren’t anniversaries great!? I am remembering so many things as I contemplate the beginning of the 2017-18 program year at Shepherd! Such a wide array of deeply meaningful experiences and relationships have developed over the two years since I began working here! It makes me realize that celebrating anniversaries is one of the ways we seek to find value and make sense out of our life journeys. We all need that! We need more of that! We should also celebrate monthiversaries, weekiversaries, dayiversaries … “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22,23
I’m also realizing that remembering is one of the main ways we anticipate and plan our futures. The previous cycles in our lives renew and inform upcoming patterns and events. As we begin this program year I would like extend an invitation for you to remember the ways that music has been a blessing in your life and in our life together at Shepherd of the Hills. Try to remember the kind of September when … After all, September is the main time of year when we re-member our music ensembles: current members, former members, new members, exploring members … all are welcome! Celebration Choir will re-member with rehearsals starting Wednesday, September 6: 6:30-8:00pm JuBELLation hand bells will re-member, rehearsals starting Tuesday, September 19: 6:30-7:30pm Praise Band will continue re-membering with rehearsals on Wednesdays from 8:00-9:30pm Kid’s Music and Youth Music will re-member with targeted dates to be announced soon! How Can You Support Shepherd Financially? Offertory Envelopes Envelopes are available at the Welcome Center and also in the sanctuary pews. Simply place the envelopes in the
offertory plates on Sunday. If you would like envelopes, please contact the church office.
Online Giving You can either have the office set-up automatic giving (see forms at Welcome Desk) or set-up the giving yourself by
going to Shepherd’s website and clicking on the Resources, then Giving tabs.
Text to Give You can text 651.433.6564 and start your contribution directly with your phone. Once an account is set-up, you will
be able to simply just text in your contribution each time (no need for the set-ups).
Electronic Payment Kiosk Located in at the Welcome Desk is our an electronic payment kiosk. Simply tap on the buttons to indicate your
amount of contribution, slide your credit card and either email or print yourself a receipt right there.
Stocks Shepherd is a non-profit and therefore stocks can be directly transferred to Shepherd. Simply complete the stock
form that is located on the website under the Resources, then Giving tabs.
Financial Giving Frequently Asked Questions Is my online payment secured? Yes, we use the Simply Giving program to administer the online giving. Credit Card numbers are never stored in the office and no one has access to your account numbers. Due to federal laws, we are unable to process payments that require PINs.
I contribute via check. How do I know my check information is secured? Each of our offertory counters has gone through a background study and we have strict policies on processing of offertory giving. Checks are never photocopied and the information is not stored at Shepherd for giving.
Does Shepherd incur a fee for electronic transactions? Yes, Shepherd does incur fees associated with all of the electronic forms of giving. If giving online, you may indicate that you are willing to pay some fees to offset our incurred costs.

Hello People of Shepherd, Fall is upon us. With back to school preparations, harvest time, last minute vacations up to the cabin, pulling out sweaters, and more filling our days ahead. It is also the time of year when our ministries here at Shepherd being ramped up for the year, filling our walls with busy commotion and joy. I am looking forward to my first fall here and seeing how things are done. I am also wondering how you as the congregation engages across ages within ministries. Over the past few years the Confirmation Project (confirmationproject.com) has been interviewing members of congregations across five different denominations, including the ELCA, and bringing in data around how
confirmation is done and how it is done well. What they have found is that when confirmation is done well it greatly has to do with how the rest of the congregation view’s their involvement. How they pray for confirmands, how they go out of their way to engage confirmands and their parents in worship, how they volunteer at events and activities, how they become mentors and small group leaders, it all makes a huge difference in the successful (or unsuccessful) building up the faith of young (and old) people in confirmation. So the next time you wonder if you have what it takes to make a difference in a confirmand’s faith journey, or if you have the education or skills, know that what you do have is exactly what is needed. Your support as a fellow member of the body of Christ, your prayers, your engagement, your ability to remember someone’s name, or attend their sporting event. The things that make us a community, that is what it takes. I am excited to jump into this journey alongside each of you this fall! Dear Shepherd Family, Thank you so much for the privilege of allowing me to be a part of the staff team at Shepherd. It is such an awesome place to be! After much thought and prayer, I have decided to step down as the part-time ReFuel Director in order to pursue a full time job elsewhere. My youngest daughter is starting kindergarten this Fall, and after being a stay-at-home dad these past three years, it is time for me to get back to full time employment. I am excited to say that I am going to continue working with the high school youth as a volunteer on Wednesday nights and at other special events. My family and I also recently joined Shepherd as members, so you will continue to see us regularly. We are very excited to make Shepherd our church home and to be a part of what God is doing here!
