Healing Stations
Our Lord Jesus healed many as a sign of the
reign of God come near and sent the disciples to
continue this work of healing —with prayer, the
laying on of hands, and anointing with oil. On the
first Sunday of each month, all who desire are
invited to receive a prayer for healing from a
Healing Minister after receiving Holy Communion.
All conversation is kept strictly confidential.

Shepherd’s Voice 4
A Message From Pr. Carl
Dear Friends of the Good Shepherd,
I am deeply touched and grateful for your greetings and
good wishes (nasty cards, too!) as I celebrated my 70th
birthday. Thank you for the singing and cakes after wor-
ship on April 13, and for the thoughtful gifts of words and
more. I have been blessed in these 70 years (4/14/44-
4/14/14) with loving families, excellent health (after a
rocky first ten years), and superior genes (Dad is 95 and
still drives; Mom is 94 and in good spirits).
I have also been blessed by the opportunity to serve this
congregation as pastor for 14 years. As I opened enve-
lopes and read your birthday cards on Sunday evening
(April 13), I noticed that some of you took that opportunity
to write words of farewell and thank you. I will begin here
to express some of my words of “farewell and thank you.”
In my first sermon at Good Shepherd on July 9, 2000 I told
the congregation what I was looking for in our time to-
gether: partnership. Well, I found it! More partnership,
more people than I had dreamed willing to invest time and
energy (and, yes, other resources too) in the work our
brother, Jesus, sent us to do. In my exit interview with the
Governing Board, when asked to state some of the
strengths of this congregation, at the top of my list was
“people who take Jesus seriously.” My work has been joy-
full because so many of you don’t just “talk the talk,” but
take your baptismal vocation to heart and “to hands.” An-
other item from that exit interview asked what were my
most significant accomplishments during my time at Good
Shepherd. I changed the question: “What were the con-
gregation’s most significant accomplishments during my
time as pastor?” That’s not some phoney false modesty;
for me it is a celebration that we accomplished much to-
gether, in partnership.
I came here fourteen years ago hoping to find ministry
partners, and I found more than I’d expected. From the
deepest place within me – thank you! I hope this is also
your experience in this congregation – that you find what
you are looking for, and are surprised to find even more.

Saying Your Goodbyes
Some folks hate it! Some folks just plain re-
fuse to do it! Some folks need it a whole
bunch! Some folks simply say “....til we meet
again!” Wherever you are in that spectrum,
please note that it is up to you to determine
how you want to say goodbye. Please note:
Pr. Carl and Dianne will NOT be greeting
worshipers on his final Sunday, June 29 as
worshiper’s exit. We expect full houses at
both worship services. Plan to say your
“goodbyes” prior to worship or Friday at the
Open House or privately over lunch, or
through a card or note to Pr. Carl.

MOPS Sunday - May 4
MOPS is an international organization founded over 40 years ago with the mission “Better Moms Make a Better World”. It is a
fellowship and support group for mothers of young children ages
birth-Kindergarten. Each local chapter is hosted by a Christian
church. Good Shepherd founded its MOPS chapter in 2004,
providing support to many young mothers in our church and
community for over ten years. It is one of four currently active
MOPS chapters in the Reno/Sparks area and one of Good Shep-
herd’s largest, active ministries.
The Good Shepherd MOPS group meets on 1st & 3rd Wednesdays
from September – May. The meetings are from 9:15-11:15 am
and include brunch, speakers, crafts, devotions and “mom only”
time. During meetings, children are cared for by MOPPET
volunteers, led by Becky Erdmann. MOPS would not be possible without Becky’s tireless dedication to the MOPS ministry. A
special thank you to all the MOPPET volunteers who helped care
for little ones this year including Lynn Brosy, Patti Chick, Kay
Henjum, Karen Hensel, Mary Hettinger, Don Hill, Jeanette Jones,
Barb Kinnune, Nancy Kuhles, Dana Marran, Lisa Mays, Doreen
Paul, Barbara Reese and Dianne Wilfrid. If you are interested in
lending a hand to this important ministry, contact Becky
Erdmann (329-3835) or email her at [email protected].
Good Shepherd also appreciates the dedication and passion of
Dolly Keller who has served faithfully as the church’s MOPS
Coordinator for the past five years. If you have any questions
regarding MOPS, please contact Dolly at 826-2127 or email her:
Church Office “Spring Cleaning” Sale
Youth Fundraiser | Sunday, June 1
In preparation for Pastor Carl's retirement and the arrival of our Interim Pastor, we will be cleaning out unneeded
items from the Ministry Center offices, supply closets, craft closet, costume closet, meeting rooms, bookshelves,
kitchens and nursery - kind of like getting our house ready for company! All money raised from the sale will go to-
wards the Good Shepherd Youth Fund to help cover the costs of camps and other activities. There are MANY
ways to help including clean out, sorting, pricing, set-up, baking, and day of sale help on Sunday, June 1 in Shepherd
Hall. We will only be selling items that we gather from around the church and Ministry Center. No donated items
from home please. For questions or to volunteer for the Church Office “Spring Cleaning” Sale, contact kris-
CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES
Fundraisers
Summer provides many awesome camp
opportunities (and the cost of paying for
those awesome camps and trips!) The
church works to keep the cost as af-
fordable as possible for all, including
subsidizing some of the costs of camps
and other retreats throughout the
year. With a very limited Youth Fund
budget though, fundraisers are neces-
sary to offer such programming. We
have a large fundraiser planned for this
fall, and a couple events before then. We
ask ALL families to help in some way
with youth fundraising, especially if your
child has already attended a retreat this
past winter or spring or is planning to
participate in a camp or other activity
this summer. Our first youth fundraiser
this year is scheduled for Sunday, June
1. We will be holding a Church Office
"Spring Cleaning" Sale in Shepherd
Hall. See below for details!

WE ARE THE CHURCH TOGETHER!
I am the church! You are the church!
We are the church together!
All who follow Jesus,
all around the world!
Yes, we're the church together!
Our Cherub Choir, all preschoolers, led us in worship with this
special piece of music. I was touched to the core by their mes-
sage. THIS is what I want the children to learn. THIS is what I
want all of us grown ups to remember. THIS is what I want all of
us to live together.
We begin the right way. In baptism, we welcome babies (and chil-
dren and youth and adults) as brothers and sisters in Christ, fel-
low workers in the kingdom.
We tell and read the stories of Jesus blessing the children, de-
claring them the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven, announcing
that unless we become like these little children, we will never en-
ter the kingdom of God.
But then something goes awry.
Well intentioned greeters smile over the heads of young
children to greet the adults.
Well intentioned ushers tell parents that "We have a nursery
for little children like yours" or show them to the back pews, so
they won't disturb others or so they can leave the sanctuary
quickly, if they cry or talk or are noisy.
Well intentioned adults discourage parents from worshipping
with young children because, really, what would they under-
stand? What could they get out of it?
Well intentioned adults in worship scowl or shush when a child
makes a noise or asks a question or answers the pastor's rhe-
torical question during the sermon.
Well intentioned adults applaud and say, "Oh, aren't they
cute?" when the children's choir sings ... but not when the adult
choir sings. Children are entertaining. Adults are serious worship
leaders.
Well intentioned adults greet one another and share the
peace, reaching over the heads of the children.
Well intentioned adults smile at the children and tell them, "You
know, you are the future of the church." Actually, no they
aren't. They are the present of the church. God has given them
gifts necessary to the body of Christ ... right now!
So, how might we go about being "the
church together"?
Help children understand that the
church is not just a building, a congre-
gation, or a denomination; the church is
all of the people who love and follow
and serve Jesus and his family.
Announce that they, too, are the
church.
Name the gifts that children and
youth have that contribute to both your
congregation and God's world.
Look for opportunities to do
cross+generational events, service pro-
jects, and learning experiences.
After worship, find the families that
worshipped with babies and young chil-
dren and tell them how much you ap-
preciated their presence, that this is
what your church family is supposed to
look like and sound like. Tell them you
know that it takes a lot of work to get
their kids to church and to worship with
them ... but this is a wonderful invest-
ment in growing lifelong faith in their
child.
Let the prayers of the people in-
clude prayers for the youngest people.
Invite children to gather around the
baptismal font during baptisms. Let
them greet the baby. Remind them of
their baptisms.
When children sing in the choir or
usher or greet or read in worship, thank
them for leading you in worship.
Learn the names of children and youth
in your congregation. Greet them by
name, Ask about their interests, their
week, their plans for the rest of the
day. Really get to know them.
What a wonderful reminder that we are,
indeed, the church together.
INTERGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY
Shepherd’s Voice 8
Orientation to Good Shepherd Tuesday evenings in May
Three learning sessions will be offered Tuesday, May
6, May 13 and May 20 from 6:00-8:00 pm with the aim
of welcoming newcomers or prospective members.
Come get acquainted with the vision for ministry at
Good Shepherd and our exciting programs of learning,
service and community. All are welcome! These
information sessions can be the first step towards
membership and/or a way to get to know our congre-
gation better. Imagine that you are about to “join the
crew” of a ship that has been on a long journey, with
new destinations ahead! These will be the last Ori-
entation sessions led by Pastor Carl before he retires
in June. If you have been thinking about joining the
church as a member and would like to go through the
Orientation process with Pastor Carl, this is the time!
Light refreshments will be served and childcare is
available by RSVP. To register for Orientation and
request childcare, contact Kristin Lessard in the
church office: [email protected] or 329-
0696 x104.
UPCOMING EVENTS Celebrating Rite of Confirmation
“O God, stir up in these confirmands the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowl-edge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.”
Rite of Confirmation | June 8, 10 am (note the time!)
Here’s what happens and how YOU can be involved
(even or especially if you don’t have a confirmand in
your immediate family!)…
1. Please keep our 8th graders in your prayers as
they prepare their Statements of Faith this month.
This is a culmination of two years of preparation
through the confirmation program. In this time they’
ve been learning what it means to “say yes to”
(affirm) their baptisms, and in the rite of confirmation
declare their readiness to live a more adult faith with
its joys and responsibilities.
After confirmation, we consider these young people
adult members of this congregation, joining in respon-
sibility for its decisions and ministries. (But keep in
mind: Children already become “members” of the
church in baptism, so confirmation is an initiation into
the adult life of the congregation.)
2. Please participate in worship on June 8th, when
the Rite of Confirmation happens at the combined
10am service with both choir and band. It will be an
energetic way to celebrate Pentecost—a time to give
thanks for the Holy Spirit given to the whole church
and to these confirmands!
3. On the previous Sundays in May, please write
down your words of encouragement or memories for
our confirmands on the cards provided before and
after worship. They will be displayed around the room
for confirmands to read during the dessert reception
on Saturday evening. What a gift for them to “feast
on” kind words from their church family! Thank you in
advance for your participation in this congregation-
wide celebration.
Shaun O’Reilly, Confirmation Leader
Thank you from Sandy Brown
We know of God’s love for us by the love and actions of
those around us. I’ve always felt God’s love, but I’ve
learned from you so much more about God’s love going
through this surgery.
Thank you to the Prayer Chain and for all who prayed
for me. I believe prayers are what helped me through my
turmoil. Thank you for all the cards, telephone calls,
greetings and to the Meal Ministry for all of the deli-
cious meals. Thanks too, for all the beautiful flowers!
And a very special thank you to the best care giver in the
world, my loving DeWitt.
How could I not get better with all the love flowing
around me?
God bless you all,

Lutheran churches who bring food once a month to
working-poor families. They deliver 80 bags of gro-
ceries each month. Bag assembly is at 1pm, May 18
at Good Shepherd. Our food barrel will be in the
Welcoming Space the week prior to and the day of
our collection Sunday. Shopping list for May:
Peanut butter
Powdered milk packets
Macaroni and cheese
Chicken noodle soup
Disposable razors
Paper grocery sacks (for loading)
Call or text Jane Knipmeyer (762-0940) if you would
like to assist with this important ministry. Our youth
are especially invited to assist on May 18!
CARING FOR OTHERS
ELCA Malaria Campaign
During the month of May, you have
the opportunity to sign up to make a
contribution to the ELCA Malaria
Campaign “in lieu of flowers”—to
commemorate a celebration or to
honor the memory of a loved one. Your honoree
or celebration will be listed in the weekly bulletin
(near “Today’s Worship Leaders.) See the sign-up
sheet in the Welcoming Space (located on the table
near the wall crosses) to participate! A hand-made
“net flower” is available for you to take—a reminder
of your donation and a symbol of the malaria nets
that make the difference between life and death to
so many.
2nd Mile Giving
Mt. Cross Lutheran Camp | May 18
Every month on the third Sunday we take a spe-
cial offering called the “2nd Mile Offering” which
is over and above the regular offerings received.
Each month we focus on a different ministry in
our Synod. The May 18 offering will be distributed
as follows:
1/3 to Mt. Cross Lutheran Camp
1/3 to serve poor people locally
(Project Lazarus)
1/3 to serve poor people worldwide
(ELCA Hunger Appeal)
Vote Together May 25
ACTIONN and others have prevailed, and early
voting for the June primary will be available on
Sundays (May 25 & June 1.) Congregations are
encouraging worshipers to caravan or carpool and
vote together on one of those Sundays. Good
Shepherd worshipers are encouraged to travel to
the polls and vote together after worship on May
25, the day before Memorial Day. We offer three
reasons to make time for this:
1. Our baptismal vocation is, in part, to “work for
justice and peace in all the earth”; one way we
do that is by exercising the privilege to vote on
issues and candidates.
2. Many of the military veterans we honor that
weekend made the ultimate sacrifice so that we
can live in a free society and exercise the right
to vote. We honor them with our vote.
3. Our own Larry Struve has served on the Nevada
Commission on Participatory Democracy, whose
goal it was to increase voter participation. We
honor their work with our vote.
Nearby polling places include Reno Town Mall on
South Virginia St. near Atlantis and Shopper’s
Square on Plumb Lane.

Affirmation/Baptism Sunday | Welcome New Members!
Brian and Elaine Burriss, Ella, Owen, and Cavan Brian and Elaine Burriss moved to Reno in 1999. Brian grew up in
San Diego and Elaine in Greenleaf, Idaho. After meeting while in
graduate school at Ohio State University, they moved back west to
Portland, OR. Work brought them to Reno. They soon found it was
a nice "middle ground" for traveling and meeting up with fam-
ily. Reno is now home with their three children, Ella-11, Owen-9,
and Cavan-7. Though the Burriss family has been active at Good
Shepherd for almost 11 years, they've decided to make it offi-
cial! They are so very thankful to have found a home of faith and
community in Good Shepherd.
Randy and Laura Pierce
Randy and Laura married in South Lake Tahoe in 2011. They have
four kids between them, Natalie 24, Emily 19, Nick 21 and Chris 18.
Randy is a radiologist at Northern Nevada Medical Center. Laura is
the owner of a Curves for Women health and fitness center. They
enjoy doing many outdoor activities together and family gather-
ings. Their journey to find the right church has happily landed them
at Good Shepherd.
Linda Shipley
Linda moved to Gardnerville, Nevada when she was 12 years old.
She has lived in the surrounding area, mostly Reno, since then. She
joined the Nevada National Guard in 1982 and graduated with a BA
from UNR in 1986. She married her husband Todd in 1989 and their
daughter Eva was born in 2000. Linda has been attending Lutheran
Church of the Good Shepherd since meeting Todd and is happy to
have been married by Pastor Heinemeier. Linda and Todd are cur-
rently running their own business since 2007, as they are "retired."
David Wade
David’s personal focus in life has been “Learn. Do. Teach. Repeat.”
He earned a BA in Management with a focus in Human and Organ-
izational Development. David trained as a paramedic in Los Angeles,
and worked in the Bay Area as a Senior Medic and Paramedic
Trainer. He has invested the last 15 years of his life in the fire ser-
vice in various capacities. He is currently assigned as a Captain,
training prison inmates how to fight wild land fires for the state of
California, while they remain incarcerated. He considers one of his
greatest gifts in life his wife and family. He is pleased to be joining
Good Shepherd as a member —he’s been searching for a long time
for what will feed his soul and heart so he can be more of the person
he is meant to be.

RETIREMENT UPDATE
Retirement Covenants / Interim Pastor
As part of our preparation for Pr. Carl’s retirement, we want
to continually remind and update the congregation on all of
the significant information that we think you might need and
want.
An important part of our preparation is reflecting on the ways
in which our relationship with Pr. Carl will change. He will no
longer be our pastor, nor will he be a part of our community (a
very gloomy thought for many of us). To clarify and commu-
nicate these changes, Pr. Carl and the Governing Board have
agreed on two Covenants—one for the Retiring Pastor and
one for the Congregation. The Covenants outline what we will
and will not do once Pr. Carl retires, and we will all be ex-
pected to uphold these. I encourage you to read these Cove-
nants (see pages 13-14), ponder them, and ask us your ques-
tions.
On a related note, we are excited to provide an update to the
congregation on the process for hiring an interim pastor!
Pastor Nancy Nelson, Bishop’s Associate, has identified a
candidate for us to interview. The Governing Board and
members of the Personnel Team will conduct an interview
with this candidate in early May. If all goes well, we will an-
nounce the interim pastor in early June.
We will begin the process of calling our next pastor in July,
after Pr. Carl leaves and the interim pastor arrives. The first
step will be the establishment of a call committee, which will
take on the lion’s share of the work. More on this to come!

Good Shepherd MOPS Most of you reading this article have, at some point in your life, received support of one kind or another. Those
that have been blessed by this support understand how even the smallest amount of it can change your perspec-
tive, attitude, situation and even your life. Sometimes, you don't even know you need it, until you get it. When you
join a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group, you are entering an established network of moms that is built to do
nothing but support you. It's an amazing feeling walking into a group of unknown women and realizing that each one
of them is going through, or has gone through, the exact same ups and downs of mothering as you. Those of us
who are mothers know there is no other job on earth that compares. Some days it's just enough to survive without
breaking down! Other days, you can't wait to call every person you know because you are bursting with pride over
something your child did or said.
MOPS International was founded with the idea of encouraging each member in mothering, relationships, and espe-
cially her relationship with Christ. MOPS was designed to equip women to become all that God has designed them
to be. Whether you are a first time mom or a veteran mom with preschoolers at the tail end of your family, MOPS
is a place you need to force yourself to be. I have had mothers come to MOPS, stay for the whole meeting, and at
the end say, "I wasn't going to come at all because I was so overwhelmed with the thought of getting us all ready
and here, but this was just what I needed and I am so glad that I made myself come!" Moms go home refreshed,
empowered, encouraged and inspired! I am proud & blessed to be the leader of a group that offers so much value
and support to moms in our community! MOPS affects each woman at her most basic level--as a child of God.
When that area of spirit is touched, it's like ripples on a pond. The support MOPS gives women reaches further
than anyone can see, into all aspects of their lives. I know that I would not be the person, mother, friend, wife or
Christian that I am today if I had never experienced MOPS.
You can find MOPS groups all over the world. The organization has expanded significantly in the 40 years since it
began. Each group is hosted by a Christian church and it becomes one of their ministries. Some groups are very
large, while some have just a few moms. There are also different types of MOPS groups; ours is traditional, but
there are Military MOPS, Teen MOPS, MomsNext, and more. There is a new theme for each MOPS year. When
you become an official member of a MOPS group, you not only attend meetings given by your group--you also re-
ceive a one year subscription to MomSense Magazine, weekly encouraging emails from MOPS International, and a
packet of fun mom things in the mail. Meetings include a speaker or a craft and sometimes both. There are mentor
moms to offer veteran mom support and provide devotionals at the end of each meeting. A brunch is shared...and
all the while your children are cared for by volunteer MOPPET workers who give you a much needed two hour
break!
Our group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from September - May. Meetings begin at 9:15am
and end at 11:15am. We encourage moms to arrive by 9am to get the kiddos settled in their age appropriate rooms.
MOPS is available to mothers with children from age birth-kindergarten. All you have to do to join is show up, but
you can certainly call for more information. My number is (775) 826-2127. Becky Erdmann is the coordinator for
our MOPPETS program. If you feel led to volunteer in this ministry working with babies through 5 year olds, please
contact her at (775) 329-3835. I truly look forward to meeting you and walking beside you on the good days and
especially the bad days of your motherhood.
