DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? I for one have long been a fan of the mystery genre and judging by the popularity of TV shows like CSI, Castle, Criminal Minds or any of the multiple other crime shows out there that follow a similar format, I am not alone. The desire to solve the crime and see the bad guy punished seems to be in all of us. It is fun to see someone get caught. I remember as a child reading The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and the novels of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, each time hoping to put the clues together and figure out the mystery be-fore the main character. No one is better at putting clues together than the great detective Sherlock Holmes.

Even if you are not familiar with the stories involving Sherlock Holmes you can probably conjure up an image of him with his deerstalker hat, pipe and caped coat. These iconic items will forever be associated with Sherlock Holmes and help us remember the man himself and his ability to use his guile and wit to solve the crime. Though it is the character of Sherlock Holmes we remember first, it is the intricately woven mystery stories of “cat and mouse” that have made him famous.

In our production of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle, two of Conan Doyle’s popular Sherlock Holmes novels are intricately woven into one story. Dr. Watson is of course at Sherlock’s side to help him unravel the mystery. Does Sher-lock fail in his final adventure? Will Professor Moriarty be caught at last? Can Irene Adler be trusted? These are only a few of the questions you will be asking yourself as tonight’s mystery unfolds.

“The game is afoot, and it is a dangerous one!”
