Dear Friends,

Our mission, at its core, is to transform the lives of children in need. Each year, we provide youth with powerful programming that help them discover their self-worth, realize their potential, and become productive citizens when they grow up.

After more than 80 years in operation, our programs don’t look the same as they did when we first started. In order for our organization to adequately serve youth-in-need, we also must continue to transform ourselves.

2017 was certainly a year of transformation, both for our organization and the children we serve. Guided by our strategic plan, Sherwood Forest entered 2017 ready to make big changes to help us continue to provide our program participants with the best.

One major goal of our strategic plan is to expand and improve our facilities so that we can accommodate more children at camp each year. In order to raise the funds for this project, we began quietly fundraising for Way More Than Camp – The Campaign for Sherwood Forest in 2016. We began 2017 with just more than of $1 million raised, and thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we ended the year with $5.5 million. By 2019, our campsite will have a new dining hall, learning center, and village to help accommodate more campers.

2017 also marked a transition year in our program leadership. For the summer of 2017, Amanda Westall served as our Interim Camp Director. In the fall, she moved into the role of our Director of Programs, overseeing our Quest, Supports for Success, and Outdoor Education programs. In the fall of 2017, we welcomed Rachel Tutwiler to our staff as the Program Manager for Quest and our new Camp Director. Each of these individuals brings unique and valued skills and experiences to our work with young people in our community.

In 2017, we continued to grow Supports for Success to serve 12th graders, allowing us to follow our campers all the way through high school, and in 2018, through their post-secondary endeavors.

It is only because of you that we are able transform and grow to better serve the youth in our community. Thank you for being a part of helping our community’s kids!

With gratitude,

TRANSFORMING FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

For our Annual Dinner for 2017, we asked some of our program participants to share their stories. One of the young people we heard from was Briana—a 10th grader who graduated from our Leadership Training Program last fall. This is the speech she shared about how Sherwood Forest has impacted her life.

I first joined Sherwood Forest during Trek and graduated from Journey last year. I was extremely nervous in the beginning because I didn’t know if I would fit in or not. I was definitely proven wrong, though. Everyone accepted me so quickly and treated me like I had been there for years.

After my first summer at camp I was really excited to go back, I was looking forward to seeing all the friends I made and the cool counselors I met.

There’s so many things to love about camp — from making new friends to going on trips, the adventure never ends.

I couldn’t imagine spending my summers any differently. Coming to camp not only made me a better person, but it has opened up many more opportunities for me. Without camp I probably wouldn’t have known what questions to ask on a college visit and definitely wouldn’t be able to plan an entire trip with a group of girls who sometimes drive me crazy.

Sherwood also offers programs during the school year. One program is Supports for Success. This program helps kids figure out what they want to do after high school and prepares them for the real world.

The Supports for Success program has helped me a lot. It’s nice to be around kids my age who also want to get a head start on planning for life after high school.

My goal after high school is to attend college, major in education and minor in mathematics so that I can become a middle school or high school teacher.

There are so many things this camp offers that are just hard to pass up. I love Sherwood Forest and I’m excited and honored to come back this summer as a Counselor-in-Training.

OUR PLAN TO HELP MORE KIDS IN NEED

Led by a volunteer Capital Campaign Cabinet, Sherwood Forest made significant progress on Way More Than Camp – the first major capital campaign in our long history. In 2017, we raised more than $4.5 million in gifts and pledges, bringing our total raised for the campaign to $5.5 million. We reached our initial campaign goal of $6.2 million in early 2018 and are well on our way to achieving our “stretch goal” of $7.2 Million by August 2018.

In parallel, our Facilities Committee made significant progress on design and architecture for the new buildings. We completed designs on the new Dining Hall, Learning Center, and New Village. Much of the construction on replacing the dam and spill way at Buder Lake was completed. All of this was in preparation for our groundbreaking in April 2018 and set the stage for a successful construction period.

Learn more about our campaign at waymorethancamp.org

SUPPORTAt Sherwood Forest, we can’t accomplish our mission without the support of our dedicated donors and volunteers.

In 2017, 282 volunteers donated nearly 7,000 hours of their time to Sherwood Forest. They helped put on great events for our donors and our campers including Trivia Night, the Blue Jean Ball, and our Kindle Give Away. Volunteers helped make improvements to our campsite during Volunteer Trades Weekend and Trash Bash. They volunteered at the bus stops and at camp, helped us file and put together mailings, and did countless other acts of service that helped advance our mission.

Our donors in 2017 were just as busy. Individuals, companies, and grantors helped us meet the needs of our campers through out the year in a variety of ways. Donors gave in-kind goods that aligned with our programmatic needs. They responded with great generosity when we asked for help meeting our goals. Donors attended events throughout the year and brought their friends along with them. Donors served as our greatest advocates, sharing our story and helping us connect with the greater St. Louis community.

Donors and volunteers made the work we did in 2017 possible. Thanks again for supporting Sherwood Forest - we couldn’t do this work without you.

2017 was another strong financial year for Sherwood Forest. We raised significant funds for our programs, operations, capital projects, and the Endowment Fund. Funding for our revenue streams remains diversified: 24% United Way, 20% Individual Contributions, 19% Corporate & Foundation Grants, 17% Special Events, 11% Program Fees, 4% Government, 4% In-Kind, and 1% Other.

Our Finance Committee has its eye toward the future and undertook several projects outlined in our Strategic Plan, most notably the creation of new three and five year budget projections that will keep us on track to long-term financial sustainability.
