Every year, through the Peel Board, a public speaking competition is run for Grade
4, 5 and 6 students. Sherwood Mills has participated in this competition for the past 5 years
and has always done very well. On April 15th, 2014 seven students from Grade 5 were cho-
sen by their teachers and peers to participate in the Sherwood Mills Excellence in Eloquence
Public Speaking Challenge Finals in The Shark Tank. Congratulations to Vaidehi S.,
Vaidehi B., Gokul N., Jacob C., Sarah D., Ferwa K. and Houssen S. for their hard work and
courage! Our 1st place winner was Ferwa, who spoke on “Family” and our 2nd place winner
was Sarah, who spoke on “Compassion”. On April 30th, 2014 our school was represented
by Ferwa at the Peel Regional Finals at Oscar Peterson Public School and was outstanding!
We are so proud of all students at Sherwood Mills who took part in this endeavour.

Free The Children Presentation As part of our Education Week activities, our Grades 3, 4, and 5 students had the opportunity
to be part of a presentation made by Free The Children. Free the Children is an international
charity and educational partner. They work both domestically and internationally to empower
and enable youth to be agents of change. Currently they have programs in various countries
throughout North America, Latin America, Africa and Asia. They work with communities to
help provide access to education, clean water, and healthcare for children and their families.
You can read more about this amazing organization here: http://www.freethechildren.com/
Many of our students were very inspired by the work that this organization is doing, especially
because it was founded by Craig Kielburger of Thornhill, Ontario. He was just 12 years old
when he began his work...not much older than many of our students. Many of our classes have
discussed and explored ways they can help make a difference and bring about change for other
children around the world.
Two of our Grade 3 classes have taken the initiative to run a fundraiser for Free the Children.
The students in Ms. Wall’s 3C class are running a Rafiki bracelet fundraiser. These bracelet's
are made by women living in developing countries. The women are paid fair wages and they are
able to support their families with the money they make. The proceeds from the sale of these
bracelets go towards 5 different initiatives: Education, Health, Water, Income and Food. You
can read more about this here: http://www.metowe.com/rafiki-friend-chains/
The students in Ms. Healy’s 3D class have also planned a bracelet fundraiser. Over the next
month, the students of 3D will be busy making Rainbow Loom bracelets and necklaces which
they plan to sell during E-Breaks in the month of June. All proceeds would go to Free the Chil-
dren.
