Keynote TalksWhere Do Good Ideas Come From?Dr Tim Rayner

‘Ideas are like rabbits’, the novelist John Steinbeck quipped. ‘Get a cou-ple and pretty soon you’ve got a dozen’. But not all ideas are born equal. Relatively few ideas are any good. Most ideas are like rabbits: fun to play with for a little while but totally useless and impossible to tell apart.

Where do good ideas come from? Are they the product of personal ge-nius? Or do they emerge from the ‘hive mind’, through many conversa-tions and exchanges? The truth lies somewhere in between these two positions. Good ideas require disciplined thinking and years of work. To generate them consistently, we need to create collaborative social envi-ronments, where a diverse mix of people can share hunches, respectfully criticise one another, and collaboratively develop breakthrough insights.

About Tim RaynerDr Tim Rayner is a philosopher and disruptive thinker. He is a Co-Founder of One Million Acts of Innovation and the writer of the award-winning short film, ‘Coalition of the Willing’ (2010).

Getting An Idea Off The GroundSimone O’Connor

Three things, that’s all it takes to get an idea off the ground. Starting out seems like a daunting, scary prospect, but when it comes down to it, it’s really just about taking a first step. 3things (an initiative of Oxfam Australia) believes that all you have to do is commit to doing three things in order to get started.Simone will share the three elements, which were integral to the success of 3things, particularly when they were finding their voice and purpose. She’ll explore their journey and draw out what they learned along the way.About Simone O’ConnorSimone grew up in country New South Wales, in a pretty sheltered, normal, not-so-interesting family. Up until she was 18 she had cruised through life and never really questioned anything that was too much outside her tiny bubble. However, when she realised that there was inequality and suffering in the world, she instantly changed her direction and started to re-imagine the life she wanted to create.Since them Simone has been working to improve her knowledge about how change happens and has found that working with youth movements and young people is really where the passion and creativities lie for sustainable social

Lunchtime TunesAt lunchtime come and chill out with these awesome young performers.

Alfie Wall is 12 years old, and has been playing the guitar, singing and writing songs since he was 8. In the last 12 months he’s recorded an album of original songs titled “My Universe”.

He is a regular busker in Manly, has supported for Steve Poltz at Lizzottes in Dee Why and has played at the Manly Food and Wine Festival, as well as The Boat Shed, Bar Nora, The Music Lounge, The Sugar Lounge, Yo Yos Youth Centre, Narabeen Markets, and Manly Markets. Like all good up and coming musicians, you can find him on You Tube.

Ella Mitchell is a 15 year-old girl with a passion for writing, sing-ing and performing music who attends Pittwater High School on Syd-ney’s Northern Beaches. Ella started singing in the Newport Primary School choir aged 7 and in the Young Musicians finals aged 11. Since then, Ella has taught herself to play the guitar and piano - YouTube has been an extremely useful tutor.

She’s played to audiences of thousands in Australia and for TV pro-ducers in London, but you can often find her busking around Sydney’s northern beaches or playing a local community gig.
