The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR)

Year: 2005 - 2006

Part A:

Part A: What is the plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards

quality enhancement and what is the outcome by the end of the year?

Theme for the year: Bridging the gap between board room and class room.

At the beginning of the academic year 2005-2006, a plan was chalked in IQAC meetings to draw

an implement during the year:

1. To organize lectures on contemporary topics of Economics and Finance.

2. To increase number of industrial visit to both, manufacturing facilities and corporate

offices.

3. To encourage students to participate in various curricular oriented events.

4. To sensitize students about women empowerment.

5. To bring in awareness on ragging which was declared by the legislation as a non-

cognizable offence.

6. To continue the system of student-counseling and/or conducting regular workshops on

counseling for different segment of the student-community

7. To continue with Industrial Interface Forum, Planning Forum and Economic

Association, Podar Hiker club, N.C.C, N.S.S activities.

8. To upgrade the computer lab, making the systems compatible with advanced software.

9. To promote Campus Placements for students.

10. To enhance focus on extracurricular and sports activities.

2. Outcome by the end of the year:

At the end of the year the outcome of the plan as chalked out by the IQAC was reviewed and

found to be up to expectation:

1. Under the Women Development cell eventful activities to spread awareness and to

induce fellow students to work for the upliftment of women were held.

2. Industrial Visits to BSE, ISRO, ABB, HINDACO, ZANDU, REVA ELECTRIC

CARS, AQUAGUARD AND CENTRAL JAIL in Nasik.

3. A workshop on Public Speaking conducted by Mr. Ravi Iyaar, a radio jockey at the

radio station- Radio City 91 FM was organised.

4. Speakers’ Academy conducted several seminars by esteemed speakers on public

speaking skills.

5. Students participated in The National Summit of Economics under Bliss point 2005

conducted by the Venkateshwara College, New Delhi.

6. Planning Forum and Economics association organized a lecture on “Effective

Communication skills and interview techniques” by Dr. Ajay Tarunkane, an eminent

consultant, therapist and professional trainer.

7. The Computer Association of Podar (CAP) continued with its Inter-collegiate event:

“Exodus Reloaded”. 70 colleges participated in the event which involved computer

games.

8. Best NCC Cadets awards and six cadets attended the 26th

Jan 2006 Maharashtra

Republic Day Parade and ten cadets attended the Ganesh Visarjan programme.

9. Library Services were properly pipelined and the timing of the reading hall was

extended to 8.00 pm to enable students to prepare for examination.

10. NSS participated in various activities like anti ragging camp, Tree plantation Camp,

medical Camp, AIDS day rally, Leadership Training camp, Women’s empowerment

programme, fund raising and 10 days rural camp at Chandip.

11. Podar Hikers Club organized several adventurous activities like hiking, trekking, rock

climbing.

3. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

The college is well known for its philosophy “Samaani Va Aakooti Samaanaa Hridayaani

Vaham” meaning “One in mind and One in Heart”. To achieve the objectives, all the

departments and committees put continuous efforts, by conducting various programmes in

addition to its regular academic schedule as prescribed by the University.

Following are some such major programmes conducted in our college in the academic year

2005- 2006.

Academic programme:

• Students Internship Programme: Two students were selected for the SIFE internship

programme and visited Washington , USA in august 05 where they got to be a part of 17

prestigious programme

• Artists’ Guild organized ENIGMA in association with three Nobel institutions - CRY,

Red Cross and SWAT (Students working against Tobacco) to sensitize social

responsibility among the students.

• Speakers’ Academy: a platform for students to express their thoughts and opinions, held

innovative and interactive workshop on Public speaking by Mr. Ravi Iyaar. Students

participated in the A D Shroff Elocution Competition and won the 2nd

prize in the inter

college event. Students also participated and won awards in the P.C.Alexander elocution

conducted by the Mumbai University and Sir Rustom P. Masarani elocution competition

conducted by K. R. Cama Oriental Institute.

• Planning Forum and Economic association: an “edutainment” quiz was held which

was a mixture of questions from all fields. The forum also organized a visit to BSE. The

Forum organized “Twister 2005” an intercollegiate event featuring a mock stock

exchange game, which saw the participation of 22 colleges. Faculty from the BSE and

also Prof. A. Dhingreja of the college, conducted lectures for students. A corporate

crossword game was organized for both junior and degree students.

• Group Discussion cell: Intra collegiate group discussions were held on regular basis

round the year. Eminent faculties and Ex-Podarities were invited to judge the events. An

interactive session was conducted by Prof. Leena Ramani on “How to conduct yourself in

a GD”. AIDS awareness seminar was organized in association with Wockhardt Hospital

& Harvard Medical College. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Om Shrivastav and Mrs.

Khurakiwala. A workshop on “Soft skills Enhancement” was organised by the Cell in

association with “SUCCESS” which was conducted by Mr.Srinivas and Mr. G.K. Mishra.

• The Computer Association of Podar (CAP) continued with its Inter-collegiate event:

“Exodus Reloaded”. 70 colleges participated in the event which involved computer

games.

• N C C Report: The N C C unit of Podar College under the guidance of Captain

M.B.Gavande and Support of Principal achieved spectacular success in its activities. The

August parade was commanded by Mangesh Khokale and was anchored by Sgt,

Swapnil Deore. An annual Blood donation drive was conducted and every cadet actively

participated. Two of the NCC cadets participated in the national integration camp held in

Kolkata.

• Women’s Development Cell: The Women’s Development Cell of the college did

commendable work during the academic year. Various activities, generally related to

women were conducted.

• N.S.S: The unit organised the following activities:

� Tree Plantation Camp: around 250 saplings of different species planted in Chandip.

� Rural Camp: A ten days rural camp was organized at Chandip in which projects of

rural upliftment were undertaken like eye testing camp, Veterinary camp etc.

� Medical Camp: three days medical camp was organized around 160 poor Adivasi

patients were treated and given medicines free of cost.

� Women empowerment Programme

� Fund raising: Rs 2000/- collected by selling rachis donated for the upliftment of

mentally challenged. Rs.2275/- collected through sale of coupon donated to NGO

“Alert India” which works for betterment of leprosy patients.

6. Innovations in curricular and transaction:

As the college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai, the curriculum and the examination

pattern is designed by them and the college cannot make any changes. However, a number of

teachers are on the board of studies, who represent the views of their respective department in

meetings related to revision of curriculum. As a result, a number of changes suggested by

teaching faculty have been incorporated in the subject of Economics, Commerce and Industrial

Psychology.

7. Examination reforms implemented:

The Examination pattern are as per University norm i.e F.Y. and S.Y examinations which

consists of the term end tests of 50 marks each for each subject. Centralized assessment

programme was initiated in the academic year. The examination chairperson trained the junior

supervisors in the conduct of the examination. All the rules for conduct of examination were

spelt out for the freshers.

14. Internal Resources generated:

The College provides its Auditorium for social functions at nominal rent. The classroom

are let-out for educational purpose namely lecture and examination on Sundays, Public

holidays and evenings. The Conference room is made available for workshops to

outsiders.

15. Community Services:

N.S.S organized several activities:

• Tree Plantation Camp: around 250 saplings of different species planted in Chandip.

Keeping in view the various important place of the library in the field of education, the college

has been growing steadily over the year.

The library provides Book Bank facilities to needy and deserving students, for one academic

year. It also renders other services like references, Bibliography, Circulation ,Documentation,

Photocopying, Inter library loans and current awareness services, internet surfing and online

public access catalogue.

The process of admission are systematic and in place. The examination committee processes the

data and prepares the marksheet.

21. Technology upgradation:

The college library purchased 14 brand new computers with latest configurations along with

standard server HP Proliant ml110 with window Server 2003 R2.

The college provides freeships to economically backward students.

23. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

The college alumni are leaders in the field of taxation and finance; hence they frequently visit

college to share their expertise with the students as guest speakers. The alumni have instituted

various prizes for excellence in academics and co-curricular activities. Mr. Abhayraj Baldota,

our alumnus, has instituted a gold medal along with various other prizes for academic excellence.

The college shares an informal relationship with the parents as a number of students are second

generation Podarites.

26. Health Services:

First-aid kits are available in the Gymkhana and Examination center. The college has

arrangements with neighbourhood physicians as and when required.

27. Incentives to outstanding sportspersons:

The college felicitates the sports persons with outstanding performance on the Gymkhana day.

The sports persons are gifted with sports kit, trophies, medals and certificates for their exemplary

performance at State and National levels.

28. Activities of the Guidance and counseling Unit:

The college has appointed a counseling psychologist Ms. Sheetal Ravi who visits the college

once a week. The psychologist deals with issues of the students related to personal and career

options. The teachers at an informal level are able to counsel the students. Since they sensitive to

the problems faced by students (personal and academic), they are well equipped to deal with it

themselves or refer to the psychologist.

29. Development programme for Non-Teaching staff:

The non-teaching staff are encouraged to use computers for work. Art of Living conducted

relaxation sessions with the staff during vacations.

30. Campus Placement:

More than 15 esteemed companies like Ernst & Young, Tata Consultancy Services, Direct-I,

Deutsche Bank, Citi Group, Axis Risk Consultancy, HDFC Standard Life Insurance, Merit-Trac,

J.P.Morgan, Google, Grant Thorrnton, Grid Stone Research, Mind Space, Shapooria presented

career opportunities to vast pool of talent of college. A total of 250 students applied to various

companies and more than 130 got selected. This means we have already achieved a selection rate

of over 50%.The companies are truly presenting a platform to the students of the college to

display their true potential and make the college proud.

31. Any other relevant information the institute wishes to add:

The G7 classroom was made available to the college students as well as outsiders for studying

from morning till late night on all days of the week.

Library Orientation Programme for new comers in order to make them aware of library facilities

and services.

To motivate the students to read, every year the college library gives “Best Readers of the Year

Award” to the students who make the best possible use of library facilities and spend quality

time in the library.

51 students were given “Principal’s Special Awards.

Teacher’s achievement:

� Prof. Shobana Vasudevan attended a workshop on “Technology enabled interactive

workshop for NAAC” at Nagindas Khandwala College, Malad.

Resource person on the topic: “Career Options in Banking” organised by Shree Saraswati

Thgagaraja College, Poech, Tamilnadu.

Appointed as a member of syllabus committee by University of Mumbai for the subject

of Business Management.

Paper setter and moderator for University of Mumbai at T.Y.B.Com. level.

� Prof. Manjusha Sawant participated in Orientation cum Training on the working of

Women Development Cell on 29th November 2005 at Vidyanagari, Mumbai University.

� Prof. Suryakant Pagare attended Orientation Programme at Tata Institute of Social

Sciences as Programme Officer of N.S.S. unit of college from 19th July to 28th July

2005.

� Prof. Pradeep Kamthekar completed M.Com. degree in 1st class, ranked 5th in Mumbai

university, topped in Advance Management Accounting and 2nd in Advanced Financial

Accounting.

The IQAC met at the end of the academic year and prepared a roadmap for the academic year

2006-2007.

1) To arrange the programme / lecture for teachers on Women issues and problems.

2) To continue with the policy of encouraging students and teachers to participate in

seminars and workshops.

3) To further improve academic excellence in college and university level examinations.

4) To continue giving exposure to students by arranging industrial visits in and around

Mumbai and also outside the state.

5) To subscribe for more number of journals/ Periodicals for the benefit of the staff and

students.

6) To enhance placement activities for the graduate students.

7) To introduce Electronic Attendance System.
