As our final newsletter for the year goes to print, it is rather noticeable that Christmas is very much just around the corner! We have once again been able to make significant donations to those organisations who work hard on a daily basis, to make a difference to the lives of those suffering mental ill health. I warmly thank our very loyal donors and supporters for continuing to show such wonderful generosity in assisting Foundation Shine to further our vital cause of raising funds and awareness for mental health.

For many of us, the festive season means fun and relaxation, but for others it can be a time of stress, financial pressures and loneliness. Support services report that suicide and self- harm are typically high over the Christmas period. At the same time, there is increased demand on mental health services and support when they are not running at full capacity. Therefore, as family and friends it is important we look out for signs of mental health difficulties and offer comfort and kindness in the true spirit of Christmas.

May this Christmas season bring you closer to all those that you treasure in your heart.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Warm Regards, Robyn May President

Robyn handing over $10,000 to Nathan Wildy of MIFSA for their ‘Blokes Business’ Program

Cheque Presentation Robyn May, President of Foundation Shine presenting a cheque for $10,000to Nathan Wildy, Marketing & Communcia-tions Officer for MIFSA.

Nathan was our very inspiring guest speaker who shared his journey of experiencing the heights of being in the 2000 Olympic Games Soccer team to reaching the lows of dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Proceeds were partly from our Spring Lunch and Art Exhibition and also our generous and loyal sponsors, The Corvette Club of SA.

LIFELINE ADELAIDE Foundation Shine was pleased to be able to donate $2000 to Lifeline Adelaide from part proceeds raised from our Spring Lunch and Art Exhibition in October. CRISIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE Through Lifeline Adelaide, South Australians who are experiencing a personal crisis can access online and phone crisis support and suicide prevention services. It is one of the busiest centres in Australia with 170 trained and supported volunteers answering over 29,000 crisis calls every year, and this number is rising. Lifeline Adelaide receives no State Govern-ment funding and relies on the contribu-tions from generous supporters to keep it operational . Every call costs $25 and they need to raise over $500,000 each year to keep the service operational . For further information call 8202 5111

Foundation Shine Inc. sincerely thanks and acknowledges the ongoing support of the

Sunday Spring Luncheon and Art Exhibition - 19 October 2014

The beautiful Adelaide Pavilion – Veale Gardens was the venue for our special event – and special it very much was.

The team at Adelaide Pavilion were just so accommodating and helpful to ensure this event was a standout.

One function room was set aside especially for our Art Gallery, which enabled the Artist’s works to be professionally displayed - It was a debut exhibition for budding artist Steve Shearer, with Phil Hodgson, Leanne Owen and Suzy Tilley displaying their works. The style of each of the Artists was unique and guests enjoyed viewing all of the works over drinks and Mediterranean platters.

The event was hosted by Adelaide celebrity Mark Aiston with great flair and was a 2 course meal complimented with fine wines and fine Company.

Our guest speaker Nathan Wildy was truly inspiring and left no one in doubt about the importance of supporting events such as this one, with funds raised channelled to Lifeline and the Mental Illness Fellowship of S.A. Inc.

Andrew Crispe and myself provided a musical bracket which was enhanced with Don McQueen on bagpipes for a stirring rendition of You’re the Voice.

Foundation Shine President Robyn May’s speech is included in this issue, which outlines the amazing assistance and sponsorship received for this event to be a success.

We were able to contribute $10,000 to MIFSA for their Blokes Business Program, be sure and read the letter received from Natasha Miliotis, CEO of MIFSA and $2000 to Lifeline.

Kind regards, Shaz

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone on this glorious Sunday afternoon to the picturesque gardens of Adelaide Pavilion on our Spring Lunch and art Exhibition. I’m sure we will enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable time together whilst at the same time raising much needed funds for Mental Health.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome and thank our compere Mark Aiston whom you would have all tuned into on the FiveAA breakfast show. He has also been a former Beyond Blue advocate and mental health week host. This vital fund raising cannot occur without the support of generous sponsors and individuals who are extremely loyal to Foundation Shine. Firstly I would like to thank our sponsors. Cleveland Freight have been a major sponsor at every function we have ever held & today they’ve donated our enticing raffle items and a substantial cash donation. Whiteline Transport consists of Sharon Middleton my co-founder of Shine and husband Bob Middleton. Our functions wouldn’t be as professional and successful without the support of this generous couple. From all the administration, IT equipment, printing, even our entertainment, their support is virtually unlimited. Rececca Minuzzo of Ribbon Whirls has kindly donated the cute lolly jars and gorgeous table centrepieces. I am sure you’ll all agree the room looks simply perfect and adds another dimension to this very “artistic” afternoon. Feel free to chat to Rebecca and book an absolutely divine and delightful desert table for your next party!A lovely new Italian restaurant in Hutt Street has recently opened, called Gusto on Hutt . They’ve kindly donated a $25 gift voucher to go with the each table centre. Adelaide Pavilion have very generously waived the cost for the stage, room hire and minimum spend which is a saving of over $3000. This kind gesture will definitely go a long way in helping us donate substantial funds to MIFSA & Lifeline. By now you’ve all had the pleasure of viewing the talent of the four amazing artists. Suzy Tilley, Leanne Owen, Steve Shearer and Phil Hodgson have taken their time to set up and exhibit their beautiful art works, donated silent auction items plus a percentage of any sales made today. Please feel free to speak to the artists . You could even commission that painting you have been wanting for ages. So a gigantic thank you to all of these hugely supportive people who have played a major role towards making our event happy and successful.

Today we want to create awareness for men’s mental health!

You might be interested to hear the following statistics..

1 in 8 men will experience depression

1 in 5 will have anxiety at some stage in their lives

Men are less likely to talk about it, which increases the risk of anxiety

and depression

In Australia there are approximately 2,200 suicides each year

80% are by men - with an average of 5 men taking their lives every

single day

Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under age 44 - this

significantly exceeds the national road toll

Hence, we hold these events to create this awareness and funding which we are then able to channel through to organisations

currently providing vital support programs. So funds raised today will go to Mental Illness Fellowship SA and Lifeline Adelaide.

As many of you know, MIFSA was our first contact with an organisation which provides support to people with mental illness. Their mission is to increase opportunities to achieve good mental health, to promote acceptance of mental illness and provide quality services for people with mental illness, their family and friends.

Today’s funds will go to a program held at MIFSA’s respite house . It is for men and and is called “Blokes Business” and aims to provide carers of people experiencing mental illness with a break from their caring responsibilities. The OK to Talk workshop has been very popular and with our help they will continue to hold these uplifting workshops. LIFELINE was formed in 1963 by the Reverand Dr Sir Alan Walker who took a call from a distressed man who later took his own life. Determined no to let lack of support be the cause of more deaths Sir Alan launched a 24hour crisis support line. There are now 1000 staff and 11,000 volunteers . They are there for people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Lifeline believes that no suicidal person should be left alone. Somewhere in Australia there is a new call to Lifeline every minute. Lifeline believes most suicides are preventable and that we all have a role to play in suicide prevention. In closing I would like share some wise words from Winston Churchill,

“We make a living by what we get,but we make a life by what we give” Thank you for giving today.

DIA DES LOS MUERTOS FIESTA ROCKS GREENFIELDS !!

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the much anticipated Rockabilly event took place at the Greenfields depot of Whiteline Transport on Saturday 2nd November – celebrating great bands, dancing, fine food from Mexican, Gourmet Hot Dogs to Good Aussie Fare, traders and good times and at the same time again assisting Foundation Shine Inc. making a difference to those suffering mental ill-health.

The celebration has truly become national – there were guests from Perth, right across to the other side of Australia from Brisbane. Arthur Mats Camperdown event organizer drove his 53 Chevy from Victoria to witness the event first hand.

Event organizer George Cushnie and Francis Macri attracted the best bands for the event which included from Adelaide :Fistful of TrojanSatelitesSaucermenLucky SevenAnd from VictoriaItchy FingersDetonators

The event at Greenfields is part of a 3 day festival also taking in The Gas Light Tavern on the Friday night and Halfway Hotel Sunday.

George and Francis also managed some radio time again with the very supportive Orange Blossom Special D.J. Christine.

The rain stayed away, which is always welcomed, especially when enthusiasts bring out their prides of joy, which included Classic Cars, Hot Rods, Customs and magnificent trucks. There was also a chopper display – one offs that had been hand made and Andy Seymour was tasked with awarding trophies, the winners being :Best Classic – Lou ReveruzziBest Custom – S.A. ChoppersBest Hot Rod – John SheltonJudges Choice : Truckworks – Peterbilt.

This year, the work completed by Adam Harrold, Trevor Warner and George Cushnie to custom make a unique ‘mexican bar’ just added to the incredible atmosphere. The bar was complete with swing doors and ‘holding jail’ !!!

The boys were offered multiple deals to part with the bar, but there was no chance of that happening any time soon !! The bar and the decorations that Leah Cushnie use to create the ‘mexican’ feel keeps building momentum and is expanded on every event.

Great food choices were on the menu with Haddos Hot DogsAusmexRoad Runner Deliand for me I just loved the burritos !!

The traders were on hand as usual and for those wanting some body art Rockabilly Tattoo artists Matt, Lee & Jamie were there to lend a hand. Anyone wanting a more ‘temporary’ painted fix could indulge in the face painting – some of the designs you seriously would not want to bump into in a dark alley !!!!

Special thanks also to Chris for his role in being m.c. and the always entertaining DJ Jesse.

As a result of the event, after expenses just under $9000.00 was raised. Foundation Shine Inc received $3500.00 with the balance of proceeds to be reinvested in the event for 2015 by Dirty Devil Kustom, which will be held Saturday 7th November, 2015, put it in your diaries – it’s an event not to be missed. Improvements will include additional bands and a larger dance floor.

Take a look at the great pix with special thanks to resident photographer Angie for snapping these great memories……

Best regards, Shaz
