Dear Industry,
You will not have ailed to notice that there is a lot going on at the momentwhen it comes to technology developments in the shipping industry. The political debates on the environment have added an unprecedentedamount o emphasis and pressure on technology companies and designers
to develop new solutions, and ship owners to install or use them. But the pressure being pushed onto ship owners regarding emissionsis not the only driver or change in the industry. Architects, engineersand other orward thinkers are hopeul o nding new ways o reducingoperating costs, making vessels more eective, and making them saer. Many o the debates ocus on Europe or North America. Some targetChina, India and other areas in the Far East. But when we look at thetechnology developments and the Middle East, this is the only debateorum you will nd. The Middle East has a pivotal role to play, both in terms o its own urtherdevelopment and growth, but also in shaping international shipping. Add
to this the increased demand all shipping has or knowledge o the latesttechnologies rom around the world, and the latest thinking on how thesetechnologies will impact the industry, then this is a key annual orum.
The event is growing in stature and opportunity. It is becoming morethan just a conerence o sponsored sales speeches, but more an annualbenchmarking opportunity that will allow everyone in the industry to gaugethe pace o developments and understand how much is likely to change overthe coming years. My job as chairman is to ensure you leave the conerencewith rm ideas o how technology can, and will, infuence shipping duringyour lietime.
Yours Sincerely,
Craig Eason,Technology EditorLloyd’s List, UK

14.30 Reduction Of Noise In Engine Rooms – Fundamental
Mechanisms To Control Noise Level The noise level in engine rooms on ships must be controlled to
ensure a sae working environment or crew working in and near
the engine room. As new more strict regulations come into orce
it will be necessary to implement extensive modications to the
engine and the engine room itsel to ull these limits. For example,
DMA (Danish Maritime Authorities) will impose a limit o 105 dB(A)
maximum sound pressure level in the engine room which will be
very challenging to achieve.
The present paper discusses the undamental mechanisms related
to reduction o noise in engine rooms. The eect o engine sound
power, room volume and room absorption is illustrated by numerical
predictions and veried with ull-scale measurements. Finally, some
recent work by Wärtsilä and Lloyd’s Register ODS on reduction onoise rom the engine itsel is presented in brie. It is demonstrated
that noise reduction measures needs to be applied not only to the
engine but also to the engine room i coming stricter regulations are
to be achieved.

09.35 The Potential For A Nuclear Propulsion Renaissance In
Merchant Ships The paper discusses the issues surrounding the possible
reintroduction o nuclear propulsion into merchant ships. Within
the merchant sector o the industry there is currently much
discussion on the possible merits o such a renaissance as wellas consideration o areas o potential concern. With naval vessels
nuclear propulsion is a well established technology and has
been shown to have a good saety record. As such, the paper
explores these concepts and, in particular, considers the lessons
learnt rom the application o this technology in terms o the
engineering and risk implications, saety and operational culture
and models.

quest or uel eciency and today also reduction o emissions.
However, saety and or some ships comort are design aspects
that also need to be considered. An overview o the state o the
art in simulation is given, with ocus on hydrodynamics as they
are most relevant or eciency. New developments in simulation
methods are described in more detail, such as ormal optimisationo hull orms and unnels, unsteady ree-surace CFD codes or
seakeeping, and light-weight constructions. Case studies rom the
