Rabbi’s Message
I can still remember the
first time that I voted in an
election. I’m quite certain
that most of you can, too.
After years of tagging
along with my parents to
polling precincts, I finally
got my own turn. And so
in the fall of 1996, I sat on
the couch in my
apartment and filled out a paper absentee ballot
from the State of Wisconsin. It was a lot less
dramatic than I had imagined it. Then again, times
were a lot less dramatic when I was a college
student.
The pattern that began when I was nineteen years
old continued into adulthood. Each Presidential
election, I would fill out an absentee ballot –
because I lived in a state (or a country!) that was
different from the one where I was registered to
vote- and send it in ahead of election day. In fact,
the first time that I voted in person was just a few
years ago, when I moved to Homewood. Even
though it wasn’t a Presidential election, it was a far
more exciting experience than the one I first had,
when I was in college. Going into the voting booth
with a ballot in-hand, quite literally gave me
goosebumps! And I’ve had the exact same
experience every time that I’ve stepped into a
voting booth since. It is remarkable that the
simple act of punching holes in a piece of
cardboard, or touching boxes on a computer screen
can be so powerful and meaningful. I am certain
that many of you have shared this excitement.
What far from excites me, however, is the fact that
individuals in our country are being denied their
right to take part in the democratic process based
solely upon factors such as race, socioeconomic
status, etc. Just yesterday, my mother and I were
discussing a news story about race and equal
access to the polls, and I must tell you, I am
absolutely beside myself! This is just the latest in a
series of stories that have dominated the news in
the past few weeks. Everyone should be able to
share in the excitement of voting, to share his or
her opinion by voting for the candidates of his or
her choice, and to have an impact upon the
democracy that is the United States of America. So
how in 2018 America, have we become so blatantly
xenophobic and racist?! How in 2018 America, do
we explain calling the police on someone, simply
because of the color of his or her skin?! How, in
2018 America, do we deny people their rights based
solely on fear and on stereotypes?! I refuse to
accept this America! And I hope that you will too.
On November 6, 2018, our nation will hold its
midterm elections. PLEASE make sure you
exercise your right, and vote in this election. As
Jews, who’ve been denied so many rights
throughout history, we know, first-hand, how
painful and devastating this experience can be. Let

us work to ensure that we NEVER take these
rights for granted. And let us work to ensure that
every person, regardless of the color of his or her
skin, has equal access to the rights that we
Caucasians are privileged to have. If you would
like to vote in person, but have no way to get to the
polls, please, call the Shir Tikvah office and let us
know. Members of our community have graciously
volunteered to try and help by offering rides to
polling places on Election Day. Together, we CAN
and we WILL make a difference!

An Update from Beit AmiChai Hebrew School
On November 9th we will again have our Beit AmiChai students and youth choir participate in the
Kristallnacht observance and family service at Shir Tikvah. This is always a beautiful and special
service and we look forward to our school and community observing it together.
Beit AmiChai is once again having a Latke fundraiser. Latke's are made from scratch and will be
ready in time for Chanukah. We thank everyone in advance for their support. Flyers will be sent out
from the congregation with all the details.
Happy Thanksgiving!
We will not have Hebrew School on November 21st. No
Sunday School or High School Havurah on
November 25th.

A baby is born. Absorbing the genetic
characteristics of both parents, she
enters the world and begins the steps,
both literally and figuratively, toward
eventually becoming a mature
individual. As she starts to take those
steps, she is somewhat unsure and falls
a few times. She may ask for help and
will receive it. She makes mistakes as
she tries new skills, but she learns from
those mistakes and continues to
progress. We are all so proud of her.
Welcome to the world, Shir Tikvah. We
are thankful for you and proud to be a
part of you. Thankful—during
November, we celebrate the secular
holiday of Thanksgiving, but what is the
relationship between Judaism and
Thanksgiving? After all, we have more
than one holiday in which we give
thanks. During Sukkot, we give thanks
for the harvest. We celebrate Chanukah,
a time in which we give thanks for the
Maccabees, miracles, and religious
freedom. Tu B’Shevat: thanks for the
trees and the fruits. Thanks for freedom
from slavery as we celebrate Pesach, and
thanks during Shavuot for the Torah. In
fact, some may say that the Jews
developed the concept of giving thanks.
Rabbi Benjamin Blech on aish.com
wrote, “What is the best way to define a
Jew? Not by our nose, as anti-Semites
would have it, but by our name. Jews
are the people who gave to the world, in
addition to the awareness of G-d, the
concept of gratitude. Aldous Huxley
noted a profound truth when he wrote
that, ‘Most human beings have an
almost infinite capacity for taking things
for granted.’ Jewish life actively fights
against this. Every single day the first
words out of our mouths upon
awakening are, ’I give thanks before you,
eternal King, for having restored to me
my soul.’ Every single day there are one
hundred blessings to be recited, one
hundred times to say thank you. One
hundred times we emphasize not what
we are missing but are grateful for what
we have. If someone lacks this trait of
thankfulness the Talmud boldly says
there is grave suspicion that this person
may in fact not be a Jew! Thankfully –
and the pun is intended – others
incorporated this idea into their
traditions as well. The pilgrims who
came to the American shores were
steeped in the ideas of the Bible. In
1621, when the colonists in Plymouth
Massachusetts survived a harsh winter
and were blessed with a bountiful
harvest, they recalled the Torah holiday
of Sukkot and in imitation celebrated
the first American Thanksgiving. The
requirement to acknowledge received
blessings, without taking them for
granted, should certainly be recognized
as basic civilized behavior.” We,
Sherman and Sherry, as your
presidents, have much to be thankful
for. We are thankful for all of you.

Whenever, we need help, someone is
there to chair a committee, to help
organize a meal, to make some phone
calls, or to give any other support we
need. We are grateful
for the Women of
Shir Tikvah, who
have been organizing
activities and raising
money for our
congregation. We are
thankful for Bob and
Diedre, who always
seem to anticipate
our needs before we
even know that we
have them. We are
definitely thankful for
our spouses, who put up with our
meetings, phone calls, and requests for
help. Finally, we are thankful for Rabbi
Harari, the Shir Tikvah treasure. If you
want to know how much she does for all
of us, try shadowing her for a day or two
or a week. She has touched the lives of
each and every one of us. So this year
when you sit down at your Thanksgiving
table, why not articulate for what you
are thankful? How long is that list? Now
say a prayer for having so many riches.
We, too, are thankful.
