Editorial

Welcome to the second issue of Shop Local Canmore Magazine, the movement in Canmore is now 1.5 years old.

People are starting to catch on. Shopping locally is about you and the choices you make. If you live here, whether you are an employee or a business owner it is good to “think locally first” before running off to Calgary and buy-ing there.

Typically initiatives like this are run by community business associations that have existing financial backing. As a pri-vate enterprise it Is a challenge to keep this business go-ing, however, the future looks bright and I thank everyone for their support.

I would like to encourage more businesses to sign up and move this undertaking forward as the more members there are the more money there is for initiatives to spread the word. “We are all in this together” as Red Green says.

In business there are successes and of course sometimes things slip sideways. I had planned to hold a Banff Trade Fair in September 2012 but unfortunately it could not hap-pen. There were so many factors involved with the cancel-lation, it really broke my heart. However, on the upside all Banff businesses are welcome to join us at the spring Trade Fair in Canmore.

Bringing back the Canmore Trade Fair in 2012, after a 6 year absence was great. It fit well with the Shop Local mandate and even though I only had 10 weeks to pull it together it was a great success. I really felt a big commu-nity hug from everyone who was happy to see the event come back. It was good to hear the positive comments. With ample lead time and a lot of thought I have so much planned for the Fair in spring 2013, it is going to be very exciting.

Registration and the master plan will be revealed in mid-January 2013. This year I will be implementing contests for every age group to engage the community like never be-fore.

So mark your calendars, watch for the exact dates, put this in your budget to attend, be a vendor or enter a contest . I will see you there!

In Praise of Small Business

Small businesses are the heart of our community. They create vibrancy in our town, beautiful storefronts and promote a family-friendly living environment. Shopping at a small business is a special experience that you cannot get at a big-box store. Many products are unique and impossible to find anywhere else. Small business owners are reputable and know their products intimately. They are often family-run, handed down from generation to generation or owned by passionate people. When you buy from a small business, you support local families and local jobs. Small businesses matter to our economy, to our commu-nity, and to our friends and neighbours.

Keeping the business in the family!

Taylor Sluka

play with cars, he has worked here long enough and hard enough so he deserves it.” said Mike

The father and son team are excel-lent at conceptualizing the product all the way through to completion, entailing the design, permitting if needed, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and service down the road. As nothing lasts forever they also provide yearly maintenance on their produced signs. Mike stated that “With a little elbow grease we can keep a sign looking great for-ever.”

Last fall Mike took a challenging course with 3M and passed with fly-ing colours. He is now a registered and certified 3M preferred Installer for vehicle wraps, floor and wall graphics. Currently one of only 60 in Canada.

“We also do partial vehicle wraps and smaller window and door decals. We will make sure it is done right. “

Driving into the parking lot at Can-Sign people are busy working around a van. Some are pulling old worn decals off and others are put-ting brand new ones on. Mike Hal-prin, manager and co-owner of Can-Sign is ready with a smile and a big welcome.

As you walk into the 1200 square foot shop it is organized chaos. Ex-pensive looking machines are print-ing away on all manner of materials; in the back room the CNC router is cutting a wood sign to exact specifi-cations. Finished signs are stacked and others are obviously mid crea-tion.

“We started the shop as Rocky Mountain Silkscreen in 1979” says Josh Halprin co-owner and founder of CanSign. “When my son Mike was younger he worked here then ten years ago we became business part-ners and rebranded as CanSign. We are keeping it a local family busi-ness.”

“My Dad is grooming me and is slowly stepping away from the busi-ness towards retiring so he can go

Page 7: Shop Local Canmore Magazine | Issue 02

www.shoplocalcanmore.com Winter 2012-2013 7

“Whether it takes us a day or a week. This is because of the certifi-cation and the printer we have and the 3M material we use, we can give a full 3M warrantee on our work. “

Without the training from my Dad and the years and years of experi-ence I have, there would be no way I could have passed the course. There is no way someone could have just stepped in and gotten this certifica-tion, it was tough.” He stated.

CanSign has 4 full time employees and one part time including Steven Raso, who graduated #1 in his class with honours at Nait in the Sign Arts program in Edmonton. They plan to send him through the 3M preferred training down the road when he has gained a bit more experience wrap-ping vehicles.

“You name it and we can do it” says Mike. “Between the software we have and the machines we utilize, mixing in our imaginations, we work with our clients’ needs to provide the best product possible. We also do a lot that has nothing to do with signs. We have done engine seals for dragster race cars, lots of work with our CNC router for wood-working firms and we clear coat signs for public areas and much

more. Basically anything we can pos-sibly create, we will!

It is important to know that our paint system is graffiti and UV resis-tant and that we can match 85000 colors.

We sometimes work with local art-ists such as Fraser McGurk, and Tony Bloom depending on the project. Though sometimes we cannot work within the constraints of some of their projects but we do the best we can”

Everyone at CanSign is really friendly, they provide a great prod-uct, try to educate their clients and try and give to the local community. They support local causes and state that it comes back in karma points tenfold. “We are a big supporter of the Canmore Car Club and the Fa-thers Day Car Show’n’Shine which supports Food For Learning in our local schools. We also support the Hospital in many ways, and the Quilters Guild as they are a bunch of Ladies with really kind hearts, things ,like that.” says Mike

Slyly from the corner of the office Josh Halprin piped up and said, “If you have an abstract idea we can take it, turn it into reality and pro-vide you with a finished product that works, that is what we do!”

Castle Mountain Home Furnishings Jeff Bellinger liked it so much he bought the company!

Photographs by Pam Doyle

Over 15 years ago Jeff Bellinger started work as a delivery driver at Castle Mountain Home Furnishings. Under the tutelage of the long time owners, Don and Beryl James, Jeff learned everything he could about the business from the warehouse up. “It is a great way to learn a busi-ness,” stated Jeff. He worked his way up the ladder and in 2009 pur-chased the business from them when they retired. Castle Mountain Home Furnishings has been open in the Bow Valley for 32 years and has grown into the largest home furnishing store in the

area. Encompassing over 14,000 square feet the show room is expan-sive and full of everything you would ever need to furnish your home. “We have a larger selection all under one roof than some city stores,” explains Jeff “In the city each brand has its own store, you would visit one then go next door to see the next and so on. At Castle Mountain Home Furnishings we have Ashley, Lane, Broyhill, Flexsteel and the top brands in mattresses all in the same place as Canmore is our territory for those suppliers.”

Page 11: Shop Local Canmore Magazine | Issue 02

And best of all when your purchase has been made the team at Castle Mountain Home Furnishings will de-liver your brand new items, set them up and haul away your old sofa or bed for you. Free delivery from Air-drie to Invermere and sometimes further. You cannot beat that service with a smile!

“We try to keep it affordable. We offer everything from entry level to high end furniture with our main focus on well priced quality furni-ture” said Jeff. “We provide financ-ing or layaway options if you choose.” Castle Mountain also has a huge mattress gallery with 19 sets on dis-play. Bedroom sets, bed frames and mattresses by Sealy, Serta, Simmons and Tempur-pedic grace the gallery. The area also now boasts a full se-lection of bed linens, pillows and duvets and is a fantastic one stop shop to outfit your bedroom. You can see that the staff love their work and everyone acts as a team. The store looks like it is a great place to work and the proof comes from the fact that the staff have stayed for a long time. “All of our front end staff members have been with us for five plus years, they are all very knowledgeable and provide you with friendly, personalized service” said Jeff. Along with the large selection on the floor there is a website or cata-logues to leaf through for a greater selection, fabric swatches, leather samples, stains and sizing to cus-tomize the look of your furniture. At Castle Mountain you can create a whole room from a wide selection of area rugs, furniture from local artisans, tables, chairs and lamps and accessories.

Bow Valley Locksmithing Local to the core!

Born in Banff at the old Hospital and raised in Canmore, Joe Warminski has seen many changes in Canmore ant the Bow Valley. He reminisces about the old days in Canmore and misses the old mine style homes that he was raised in and the sense of community he used to feel when everybody knew you and waved as you went by. When you went to the bank and even though it took a longer time to get through the line it was a great op-portunity to catch up with all of your neighbours making the time fly by. He is a wealth of information about Canmore. He knows every nook and cranny and who used to live in what house along with many stories about things that happened in Can-more in the 70’s. Joe tells a story about back in 1954 when his Dad paid $16 per month for rent with the mine. Then in 1968 they moved the family home from the lot at Carey to Three Sisters.

Including the foundation it cost his parents $12,000 and they still lived in the house while it was being moved. However things change and Joe has kept up with the times. As vehicles keep getting more and more compli-cated he regularly reads frequently to keep up to date, and purchases updated vehicle computer pro-grams, as programming is different for every vehicle. “I am always reading up on new technologies as it is pretty in depth. I have to know all of the specifics” “Vehicles are getting more high tech.” he elaborates “Proxy systems are becoming more popular. This is a system that operates with a key fob in your pocket or bag. If you are close to your vehicle the doors auto-matically unlock and you can start the car with a button.” Joe is up to speed and can provide for your vehicle, keyless entry sys-tems and anti theft keys (with chip),

Page 15: Shop Local Canmore Magazine | Issue 02

key fobs, or specialty cut keys for your vehicle. If you lose or break your remote or need a spare car key Joe has manufacturer remotes and keys for most makes and models in stock and can check your ignition if you have a key jam.

Along with vehicle key sys-tems Joe is proficient with all types of home locking sys-tems. He can cut a new house key, fix or replace your locks or install a full wireless card swipe system for your business and pro-gram all of the cards.

Joe opened his locksmith business 18 years ago. To be more efficient and ready to go at a moments notice he runs his business out of his mobi le office unit /locksmithing shop, a white van. He is on call 24 hours per day. With emergency service after 6 pm.

Save money and “Call Joe from the Bow before you call for a Tow!”

Why Shop Locally LOCAL SHOPS SELL A WIDE RANGE OF GREAT PRODUCTS Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally and then are surprised at the range of products, gifts and services that are found just around the cor-ner.

SHOPPING LOCALLY SAVES YOU MONEY If you think of the travel time, parking, cost of gas and the fees to transport larger items home the overall cost could be much higher.

SHOPPING LOCALLY SAVES THE ENVIRONMENT We are all aware of Co2 emissions and our environmental impact. Shopping local does not require a long car ride to Calgary, shopping local helps reduce our global footprint.

SHOPPING LOCALLY SUSTAINS OUR COMMUNITY People do not like losing shops and services but do not think through how spending their money locally affects our local economy. More money is kept in our community because locally owned and operated businesses purchase from other businesses, the owners use local services and employ staff that use local services. Local businesses sustain our local infrastructure such as our fire department and EMS services.

SHOPPING LOCALLY RETAINS OUR DISTINCTIVENESS Independent shops create unique and distinctive shopping experiences as well as stock different products. They can respond quickly and personally to each customer’s needs. They can also be extremely innovative and helpful. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally.

SHOPPING LOCALLY CREATES JOBS Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Help our town cre-ate local employment and self employment for our family, friends, neighbours and our children. People who are locally employed spend money in our com-munity.

LOCAL SHOPS VALUE YOU MORE People receive better customer care and service in local shops. Shops and ser-vices rely on repeat and year round loyal customers and because they may run into you on the street or at a local event they are less likely to be rude to you as you may find in the city– shopping local means you get a higher standard of service.

UNIQUE BUSINESSES CREATE CHARACTER AND PROSPERITY The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the businesses that reside there, and plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property.

Canmore Franchises

Some people wonder why there are some franchises that are members of Shop Local Canmore. Initially we did not accept franchises at all then we were educated and decided to follow our mandate.

Simply put we support all small business that are locally owned and operated by residents of Canmore. This happens to include some franchises.

We all use franchised services such as banks/financial institutions and gas sta-tions, in fact we can not live without them if we get a paycheque or drive a car. As we are not a large manufacturing community all shops and services bring in the majority of the products for resale including brand names from elsewhere.

Franchises also are mandated to give a certain percentage per year in dona-tions thus they support local charities, causes and events.

Each Franchise member is marked with an asterisk to help you identify those franchises that are locally owned and operated. This gives you the information to make an educated choice as to where you choose to purchase.

As always the choice is yours!

Boulder Menswear

Stylish Yet…Surprisingly Affordable

Boulder Menswear is the only cloth-ing retailer in the Bow Valley that caters exclusively to men’s apparel. Long term Valley resident Lee Novak and her colleague Addy Nickerson knew they were looking for a change of career. “After working in the tourism industry for years, I knew that at some point in time I wanted to be a business owner” said co-owner Lee Novak “Boulder Menswear became available at the right time for purchasing an existing business.” Addy Nickerson had been working with children for the majority of her career. When the opportunity to purchase came up she was ready to make a change and take on a new challenge. Boulder Menswear started in Banff at the Cascade Plaza and in 2009 expanded to Canmore opening the

location on Main Street. Since pur-chasing the business Lee and Addy have facilitated the transition from an exclusive high end store to hav-ing both high end and more moder-ately priced apparel. The two women have a definite syn-ergy when it comes to buying. Each having distinct style choices widens the range of colour and style that is available in the shop. There is a con-scientious effort when on buying trips to choose a combination of colour palates and price ranges to appeal to many different clients and small grouping of buys ensures that the inventory remains uniquely au-thentic. “We like to say that there is shirt in our store for every man,” stated Lee “The majority of the stock we carry are limited editions, you can buy them here at Boulder but nowhere else in the area

Page 19: Shop Local Canmore Magazine | Issue 02

www.shoplocalcanmore.com Winter 2012-2013 19

This means that we only buy a hand-ful of each carefully chosen shirt style and colour pattern. Unlike go-ing to a chain store where you can buy the same item in Calgary, To-ronto or Vancouver, when you buy from Boulder it’s pretty unlikely the man sitting next to you at dinner will be wearing the same shirt.” While predominantly known as a ‘great shirt store’, Boulder Men-swear also has an excellent selec-tion of reasonably priced suits. As we all know, wearing suits in the Canadian Rockies is rare and most men only need one or two in their closet. These stylish outfits will last for those times that a man needs to be well dressed at any occasion for years to come.

A Tuxedo rental service, partnered with Derks, gives them a vast array of styles, vests, bow ties, cummer-bunds which are perfect for a wed-ding, special occasion or grad. The stores also boast affordable black or white shirts, ties, belts and easy care dress pants for those in the service industry. When asked about their summer window display that consisted of a shiny Harley Davidson Motorcycle, the women laughed and said “The display created awareness and brought many people into the store. Sometimes the simplest display is better than signage and it really was a great place to store the bike while it was not in use!”
