SHOP SAFETY

(l.u. 8-22-16)

Injuries in Shops?

 Cuts & Bruises

 Avulsions/puncture wounds

 Respiratory illness/Suffocation

 Foreign objects – infection

 Flash blindness

 Burns (chemical/heat produced)

 Crushing injuries

 Loss of hearing

 Electrocution

 Amputation/Disfigurement

 Death

Personal Protection (First Aid Kits)

Know where the first aid kit is

 Know first aid

Personal Protection (Emergency Stop – Power Cutoff)

ORDER:

 1. Know how to kill Individual machine power (e.g. red kill switch)

 2. Know how to unplug machine

 3. Know how to kill shop power (circuit breakers)

Personal Protection (Lighting)

Always have adequate lighting when working with tools/machines

Personal Protection (Fire Prevention)

Know where extinguishers are located and how to use them

2

Personal Protection (Hazardous Material Disposal)

Oil-chemical soaked rags must be disposed properly in red covered

trashcan.

Personal Protection (Ventilation)

Use air ventilation system when dust is present – open outside doors

Personal Protection (Floor Condition)

Sweep up dust after using machines

Clean up any liquids that contact floor – dispose rags properly

Always watch for slip/trip hazards (e.g. extension cords)

Make note of any oil you see – usually means machine breakdown is

eminent

 Never hurry/run in any shop

Personal Protection (Alertness)

Get adequate rest before using shop equipment

Do not operate equipment/machines if you are ill or experience fatigue

Never interrupt someone using a machine unless you are witnessing

a safety hazard

Personal Protection (Lifting)

Do not lift with your back

 Always lift heavy objects

Always lift heavy objects with help from others

 “Plan” lifting before lifting occurs

Personal Protection (Using Safety Glasses)

Always wear safety glasses/face shield in/around the shop

Protect from dust, scattered particles, thrown objects, broken tools from your operation or the operation of other’s (e.g. hammering nails)

Be extremely careful with compressed air

Personal Protection (Eye injury)

”A metal foreign body on the cornea. This finding is

very common, and I see several patients a week

with metal flakes stuck on the corneal surface. Many

of these patients are grinding metal … usually

wearing protective eyeglasses. The metal bits seem

to get in their hair, then fall into the eye later and rust

into place.”

Personal Protection (Burns - Flash)

Where protective gloves & cotton clothing (jeans) to avoid burns. Do

not ever wear polyester or nylon blends in a flammable environment.

 E.g. Foundry work/welding

Personal Protection (Hearing)

Use hearing protection (ear plugs or muffs) in noisy environments

(+85 dB) to prevent hearing loss.

 E.g. Chop saw steel cutting

Personal Protection (Breathing)

If you are asthmatic, use a respirator or OSHA-approved mask in

dusty environments. Pneumonitis is a problem for some people who are dust-sensitive.

Some materials react with the body (e.g. Paint contents).

Some material cannot be expelled from the body (e.g. Silica).

Personal Protection (Breathing) Personal Protection (Clothing)

Avoid loose clothing that can get caught into machines – tuck in

strings or parts that can be used to pull you into the machine

Do not wear polyester or other polymer-based clothing that can

melt, burn, or combust

Avoid clothing that has holes or exposes skin to sparks/particulates

Remove jewelry (rings, watches, necklaces) than can get caught on

tools

Never wear gloves when operating ROTARY machines!!!

Personal Protection (Equipment maintenance)

Never change, adjust, install a tool without removing the power first

Never pull out a plug by the cord

Personal Protection (Using Band Saws)

Always support work – Isolate surfaces

 Make use of gravity

 Wear eye protection

 KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM BLADE!

Never push with too much force

 Pay attention

Personal Protection (Using Circular Saws)

Make use of gravity – clamp work

When possible, use clamped board as a guide

 Wear eye protection

 KEEP BLADE AWAY FROM BODY!

Know what is behind what you are cutting

NEVER HOLD WORK WITH HAND IN BLADE PATH!!!

Keep out of blade path!!! Anticipate kickback.

Personal Protection (Circular Saw Injuries)

 Leg cuts

 Lacerations/amputations

Personal Protection (Using Drills)

Always support work – Isolate surfaces

Make use of gravity – clamp work when possible

 Wear eye protection

 Use sharp bits

Never change bits without killing power

Know what is behind what you are drilling

KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM BIT PATH!

Personal Protection (Drill Injuries)

 Avulsions

 Tears

Personal Protection (severe injuries - hair)

Be sure to keep long hair from getting caught into machines

Wear hat or pull back into pony tail

Personal Protection (Using Miter Saws)

Sliding miter saws are particularly dangerous – lock slide when not

needed

Check contact points and clearance before power-up

 Never assume blade path

Personal Protection (Miter Saw Injuries)

 Severe cuts

 Disfigurement

 Amputation

Personal Protection (Feet)

 Crushing injuries, cuts, punctures, burns

 Wear closed shoes (no sandals)

Personal Protection (Using Table Saws)

Table saws have an exposed blade – They quickly rip material

Table saws can throw unsupported materials

Table saws require YOU to oppose blade forces

Outside of the chain saw, table saws are considered the most

dangerous wood working tool

Even the most trained personnel are injured if they do not respect

the table saw

Personal Protection (Using Table Saws)

 PAY ATTENTION!

 Use safety glasses

 Do not wear loose clothing

Set blade height about ½” above material

Do not get into path of object

Support material – do not twist

Keep hands away from blade - Use push sticks

 Have partner receive materials

Personal Protection (Table Saw Injuries)

 Severe cuts

 Disfigurement

 Amputation

 Death

Personal Protection (Ladder/Step Ladder Injuries)

 Gravity always wins

 Keep feet planted

Never use top rung for support

 Never use ladder when wet/icy

Personal Protection (Ladder/Step Ladder Injuries)

After falling off a ladder, Ron Hunt landed on an 18-inch drill bit he was using.
