Area of Tallinn - 159,2 km² (Estonia 45 227 km²).ClimateThe climate in Tallinn is characterized by a fairly cold winter, a cool spring with little precipitation, a moder-ately warm summer and a long and rainy autumn. • A tour of the Old Town – the unique value of Tal-linn’s Old Town (from the 11th C) lies in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has
been included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. • Set yourself a goal: start your journey at Fat Margaret’s Tower (Paks Margareta) and walk along Pikk Street and up into Pikk Jalg towards Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. • Town Hall Square is obligatory. Try to count how many churches you can see from the cen-tre of the square and then give yourself a break. Enjoy a moment of inner peace and have some coffee or a drink at one of the cafés or terrace bars or even inside the historical Town Hall building itself. • The overpower-ing aroma of cin-namon will then bring you to the restaurant, Olde Hansa, represent-ing the height of Hanseatic feeling. From Toompea (the upper town), you can take in picturesque views across the rooftops of the lower town, and even the sea from several platforms. Our parliament (riigikogu) and government also operate on Toompea. Fi-nally, re-enter the lower town through the staircase known as Lühike Jalg and its ancient gate.• A shopping tour could start from the Town Hall Square and move towards Viru Keskus along the liveliest of pedes-trian streets, Viru Street, or Vene Street, the street of inter-
national cuisine. St Catherine’s Passage (Katariina käik) is an important inclusion on your tour through the Old Town since there you will find artists and designers, gathered there in their studios, making amazing items from glass, ceramics, leather and so on - right in front of your eyes.• After having bought sweaters in folkloric patterns, visit the style boutiques of the Old Town and become acquaint-ed with well-known local and international names such as Ivo Nikkolo, Monton, Baltman, Xenia Joost, Bastion, San-gar, Armani, Hugo Boss, Joop! MaxMara, Calvin Klein, etc.• Viru Centre (Viru Keskus) contains the Tallinn Department Store (Tallinna Kaubamaja). This is the biggest shopping trap of all, but it is a pleasant one! Don’t forget to also visit
the 3rd floor of the centre, where you can find a nice big bookstore. Con-tinue your style shopping along Maakri Street, where Estonian interior design-ers are show-cased alongside internat ional classics. A fresh approach can also be enjoyed at the Estonian Design House at Kalamaja and NuNordic, in Vabaduse Square.• Families with
children can enjoy a change from the busy city pace by visiting Rocca al Mare. Attractions here include: the Open Air Museum, where you can see traditional log farmhouses preserved and displayed to show how Estonians used to live, the Tallinn Zoo, the seaside, a sports centre and a shopping centre.• If you are heading out to Pirita you will pass Kadriorg with its baroque park and palace. Ordered by Peter I for his wife Catherine, it now houses the The Kadriorg Art Museum. By comparison you might hardly even notice a modest cottage situated opposite the residence of the Estonian president - this cottage was for the Czar himself. The main attraction of this region is KUMU, the newest art museum designed by Finnish architect Pekka Vapavuori.• Not far from Kadriorg you will notice one of our national symbols––the Song Festival Grounds––this is where tens of thousands gather together every 4 years to sing in our Song Festival in national costume. • If you want to become acquainted with our history or cul-ture, choose a museum. The Museum of Occupation and of the Fight for Freedom/The Occupations Museum will give you an interesting and contemporary overview of the most recent periods when Estonia has been occupied. all complete your introduction to cultural life in Estonia.• Give yourself a treat – take a massage or visit a beauty parlour or even a health centre. (Book by phone!) Relax! There is even a large array of pharmacies, dentists and op-ticians that can attend to your needs.
• Choosing the right restaurant for dinner is crucial! (To be sure book by phone!) British life-style magazine, Harpers & Queen, presents Tallinn as an ideal destination for acquir-ing a taste sensation. They consider Tallinn obligatory for those who are tempted by history, reasonable prices and excellent food. There are a variety of eating places offering both Estonian as well as national cuisines with a convivial atmosphere and impressive dishes.• For those who don’t want to spend the night in bed there are a whole host of nightlife attractions––something to suit every taste from the quiet sophistication of a cigar lounge or vinoteque to a busy and lively nightclub. Most of the nightlife is concentrated in and around the compact Old Town, so that visitors can peek into several venues many of which are just metres apart. You can start at Harju Street and then along Suur-Karja and Sauna and you will soon be in the centre of the action.• Leave Tallinn! Escape to the country or seaside, get a sense of unspoiled nature. Become acquainted with our history and cultural traditions by visiting the many manor houses, which are mostly open to the public. Visit the summer-capital, Pärnu, with its broad sandy beach and the greenery

• Ostosretkesi voisi alkaa Raatihuoneen torilta kulkien Viru Keskuksen suuntaan vilkkainta kävelykatua, Virua, tai kan-sainvälisen keittiön katua, Vene-katua pitkin. Katariinan käytävä (Katariina käik) on pakollinen retkelläsi Vanhan kaupungin läpi. Siellä taiteilijat ja muotoilijat tekevät stu-dioissaan uskomattomia lasi-, keramiikka-, nahka- ym. esineitä suoraan silmiesi edessä.• Ostettuasi jonkun kansalliskuvioisen villapaidan voit käydä Vanhan kaupungin tyylikkäissä putiikeissa ja tutustua tun-nettuihin paikallisiin ja kansainvälisiin tuotemerkkeihin kuten Ivo Nikkolo, Monton, Bastion, Xenia Joost, Baltman, Sangar, Armani, Hugo Boss, Joop! MaxMara, Calvin Klein jne. Viru Keskus on yhdistetty Tallinnan Kaubamajaan. Tämä on suurin, mutta miellyttävä shoppailuloukku. Älä unohda käydä Viru Keskuksen kolmannessa kerroksessa, josta löydät valtavan kirjakaupan. Täältä löydät meren-rannan, Ulkoilma-museon, jossa voi nähdä muinaisaikojen virolaisia hirsirakennuksia, Eläintarhan, urheilukeskuksen ja ostoskeskuksen. • Päästäksesi Piritalle kuljet Kadriorgin ohi, se on barokkip-uisto ja tänä päivänä taidemuseona toimiva linna, jonka tsaari Pietari I rakennutti Katariina-vaimolleen. Tuskin edes huomaa tsaarin omaa mökkiä, joka sijaitsee Viron presi-
dentin virka-asunnon vastapäätä. Tämän alueen uusin ja tärkein vetonaula on suomalaisen arkkitehdin Pekka Vapaa-vuoren suunnittelema taidemuseo KUMU. • Ei kovin kaukana Kadriorgista näet erään kansallisen symbolin – Lauluaukion, jossa joka neljäs vuosi pidetään Laulujuhlat, joihin kymmenet tuhannet kansallispukuiset laulajat kerääntyvät. • Käy toki jossain museossa, jos haluat tutustua histori-aamme tai kulttuuriimme. Miehitys- ja vapaustaistelu-museo tutustuttaa nykyaikaisella tavalla viimeisiin miehi-tyksiin. Arkkitehtuurimuseo (Soolaladu), Taideteollisuus- ja designmuseo sekä Vapauden aukion galleriat tutustuttavat kulttuuri-elämään. • Anna itsellesi lahja – käy hieronnassa tai kauneussa-longissa tai terveydenhoitolassa (varaa aika puhelimitse). Rentoudu! Suuri määrä apteekkeja, hammaslääkäreitä ja optikoita voivat myös huolehtia terveydestäsi. • On tärkeää valta oikea ravintola illastamiseksi! (varaa aina pöytä puhelimitse!). Brittiläinen elämäntyyliaikakauslehti Harpers & Queen esittelee Tallinnaa vierailun arvoisena määränpäänä jos haluaa saada makuelämyksen. Lehti

ESTONIAN CUISINE Although Estonian cuisine has not become overly popu-lar compared to the delicacies of French, Italian or Chinese kitchens, quite interesting discoveries can be found from our traditional menu. Blood sausage, brawn, home-style barley bread, Mulgi cabbage, oat-meal, Baltic herring, oven potatoes and pork are just some examples of traditional Estonian foods. Such dish-es are increasingly popular in the finest Estonian restau-rants. Those interested in healthy and ecologically clean food can also find a basketful of premium Estonian foods from the grocery store: curd cheese, yoghurt, dif-ferent cheeses, oatmeal, etc. The sweet-tooth will also find the produce of our local Estonian confectioners to be exceptionally tasty. Estonia also offers several dis-tinctive products in the alcohol department. Besides good old Estonian beer, our most famous beverage is perhaps the liqueur, Vana Tallinn (Old Tallinn), and pric-es of these products make them even more attractive.The international media has given Estonian restaurants, bars and cafeterias a high rating (Newsweek has listed Tallinn among the top 12 design capitals of the world). Vaikka virolainen ruoka ei ole saanut jalansijaa rans-kalaisen, italialaisen tai kiinalaisen keittiön rinnalla, mielenkiintoisia löytöjä voi tehdä myös virolaisten ruo-kapöydästä. Verimakkarat, lihahyytelö, rieska, sianli-han kanssa haudutettu hapankaali, talkkuna, silakat, uuniperunat ja sianliha – ne ovat tyypillisiä historialli-sia virolaisia ruokia. Niitä on mahdollista löytää taita-vasti tarjoiltuna yhä enemmän myös Viron eliittiravin-toloista. Terveellisen, luonnonmukaisen ja puhtaan ruoan ystävä voi löytää ruokakaupasta korillisen hyviä virolaisia tuotteita: rahkaa, jogurttia, juustoja, talkkunaa ym. Makean nälkään löytyy helpotusta paikallisen karamel-

SERVICE • PALVELUT Should you need an ambulance or any emergency help, call 112. The operators will speak English but for speed it will obviously help if an Estonian helps with the call. The number for the family doctor helpline is 1220, but again ask locals to make the call since there is no guarantee that the doctor on call will speak English. Police is very help-ful and trained to give first aid. Estonia’s medical services are as good as, if not better, than those in most other EU countries. Pharmacies are well stocked with basic and prescription medicines but note that some medicines that are available in stores and supermarkets in other countries - such as Aspirin and various ointments - are only available in pharmacies in Estonia. Herbal remedies and other organic products are also available in some supermarkets and nature shops.

Buses, trolleys and trams operate regularly from 6 to 23.
Make sure that you either have a valid ticket before get-ting on public transportion or that you buy one from the driver immediately upon entering. If you need to buy a ticket, enter at the front door; tickets are only sold at stops, not while the vehicle is moving. Note that tick-ets bought from the driver are more expensive than those bought at a newsstand.
Bus, trolley and tram tickets can be purchased at news-stands for 0.96 EUR or from the driver for 1,6 EUR. You can also buy a 10 ticket package for 6.39 EUR. The Tallinn Card holders may use unlimited public transpor-tation free.
Validate your ticket right after entering at a machine located throughout the bus, trolley or tram. Passengers travelling with false tickets or without tickets will be fined.
Tallinn public transport offers also 1 and 2-hour tickets as well as 1 and 3-day tickets. These tickets can be bought only at newsstands and not from the driver. A 1-hour ticket costs 1,02 EUR and a 2-hour ticket 1,34 EUR. A day ticket (24 h) costs 4,47 EUR and a 3-day (72 h) ticket 7,35 EUR. Electronic devices for registering these tickets are situated at the first and second door of the vehicle and will print the time and the date of valid-ity on the ticket.

By Air:You can fly to Kuressaare, Saaremaa from Tallinn and Stockholm. But you can fly to Tallinn from all major European cities.
By Bus:The bus service operates at least seven times a day, the total journey time being four hours from Tallinn to Kuressaare. At least nine direct buses daily travel each way between Tallinn and Kuressaare. There are four buses daily to/from Tartu and two buses daily to/from Pärnu. There are five buses daily between Virtsu and Saaremaa, and another five buses daily each way between Kuivastu (Muhu) and Kuressaare - a 1.5-hour trip timed to connect with ferry arrivals and departures. Likewise, at Virtsu you can board a bus bound to Tallinn or elsewhere.
By Sea:Saaremaa is very popular with visiting yachties. The best harbour facilities are at the Nasva Yacht Club (Nasva Jahtklubi; tel: +372 75 140, fax: +372 55 257), 9km (5mi) west of Kuressaare. But Kuressaare Yacht Harbour is an in-ternational port for small ships. The harbour has received the Blue Flag for environmental friendliness. The car and passenger ferry from the mainland port of Virtsu operates hourly to Kuivastu in the summer and every two hours during the rest of the year. (The journey takes about half an hour.) In summer it is essential to reserve a place for your car in advance as far ahead as possible. Reservations can be made through the ferry terminals or at the Kuressaare booking office.

Lahemaa – the first and largest national park in EstoniaLahemaa National Park provides a great overview of most of the natural and cultural landscapes characteristic of Estonia. Lahemaa (Land of Bays) was named after the bodies of water between its peninsulas. Lahemaa National Park is only an hour’s drive from Tallinn. The visitor centre is located in Palmse; in Sagadi you can take a look at the forest museum, and in Oandu you can take part in the activities of the nature school. The former resort area Võsu is excellent for beach holidays.

In Estonia you may in several places find thera-peutic mud, the healing properties of which were known in folk medicine since ancient times. Spas in the present meaning of the word were established as early as in the 1820- 40’s. Establishments were especially built or reconstructed for the use of local seawater or mud for the treatment of ailments under the supervision of physicians.Today the main objectives of the spa treatments are to give prophylactic care and spa treatments of the kind, which hinder ailments from becoming chronic, lessening the need of sick care, thereby saving costs, and to restore the working capacity and general capacities of the ailing. In our continu-ally more and more hectic rhythm of life many middle aged and even younger persons suffer from stress. In the course of time the Estonian spas have also partly changed their policy from being purely care centres towards being recreation centres, where the clients in addition to the treatments have the possibility to occupy themselves in various healthy activities, go in for sports or just relax and spend their time comfortably.
Usealta Viron alueelta löytyy lääkitsevää mutaa, jonka hoitava vaikutus on kansanlääketieteen tiedossa ollut jo vuosisatojen ajan. Kylpylä nykyaikaisessa mielessä perustettiin tänne jo 1820-1830-luvulla. Paikallista merivettä tai mutaa alettiin lääkereiden valvonnassa siihen tarkoituk-seen uudistetuissa tai varta vasten rakennetuissa rakennuksissa käyttää eri sairauksien hoitoon.

The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.Tallinn is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in its en-tirety. All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in their basic original form, as well as many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, along with barns and warehouses from the medieval period.
