Appointments

Glencourt Associates adds to team in Europe Due to an ever increasing number of shopfitting companies working on retail projects across Europe, executive recruiter Glencourt Associates has added a further Consultant to its team in Scandinavia. Marie Ottander (pictured above) joined the business at the beginning of August, and like most of the Glencourt team, has extensive experience of the shopfitting sector. She joined the family’s manufacturing company in Sweden in 1980, where her initial responsibilities were associated with quality control. She was also responsible for obtaining ISO accreditation for both the sales and production companies. As a co-owner and director of this trans-European company she realised the importance of employing the right people, with the failure to do so resulting in under performance, poor customer retention, and eventual loss in profitability. She became a founding Director of New Store Europe in 1987 when the Gron-Hansen and Samuelson families merged their respective businesses. Since then she has worked on green initiatives within New Store Europe, in order to provide the company with a more sustainable focus. She has always had an interest in developing people and when she left the company in 2011 she formed her own management, quality and training consultancy. Joining Glencourt two months ago has been a natural extension of her skills within this area. She will work alongside Peter Samuelson, Glencourt’s Europe Development Director.

Although founded in 1989 DZD has a much older heritage. DZD is an amalgamation of two of the oldest names in the display industry, Dann & Co Display Ltd and Zwart Décor & Display Ltd. Both Zwart’s and Dann’s trading histories can be traced back to the 1920s. Mr Jack Zwart was the first display manager in the UK, appointed by Selfridges shortly after the First World War. On leaving Selfridges, Mr Zwart set up a display company in Orchard Street, London, in direct competition with Mr Dann whose display showroom was situated in Newman Street. In 1978, Zwart Décor and Display Ltd relocated to Portman Square. Mark Gosen purchased Dann & Co Display in 1989 from Samuel Dann, who at the age of 85 was still playing an active part in the business. He also bought Zwart Décor and Display and merged the two businesses to achieve the necessary consolidation and economies of scale required by a company in a specialised market. In 1993 DZD moved to its current headquarters on Tottenham Court Road, a 13,000 square foot space incorporating one of the largest display showrooms in the UK with offices and warehousing. In the last twenty-five years DZD has grown and matured as a company. The off-the-shelf product range has increased in breadth and volume. A bespoke design and sales team now work exclusively on custom made displays, an area of the business that has developed to account for half of the company’s sales. They are proud to have been able to work with clients such as John Lewis, Molton Brown, Fortnum & Mason, Citizen M Hotels, Jigsaw and many more. DZD was an early adopter of new technology, with the full catalogue range available to buy online in 2010. Their new website is just about to launch and they expect internet sales to continue to grow. Mr Gosen sadly died in 2012, but he entrusted the company he loved to his family and the directors, who continue to grow the business from strength to strength, both technologically and creatively. Richard Wheeler from RVM Promotions said: “We first contacted DZD in the early part of 1990 regarding International Display Week (now the VM and Display Show) and very shortly after had the pleasure of meeting Mark Gosen – managing

director, who was a larger than life character and a breath of fresh air within (at that time) a very old school industry. “Over the years under the guidance of Mark Gosen we watched DZD grow, and now under the leadership of Sonya Storm and Catherine Manning, into probably the largest UK supplier of Christmas and Seasonal display products. Through their honesty, integrity and superb customer service they are firmly established as a reliable and respected company within the visual merchandising and display industry. “We have had a fantastic 25 year relationship with DZD and hope this continues for many more years”. Lawrence Cutler from SDEA said: "I can't believe its 25 years since Mr Dann sold his business to Mark Gosen who, with typical gusto, then went and bought Dann & Co's biggest competitor, Zwart Display. "There are so many memories; it's hard to pick one. Mark was a passionate supporter of SDEA, constantly keeping us on our toes with highly amusing faxes and then

emails. He had a way with words. On his inevitable appointment as SDEA President, his after dinner acceptance speech was worthy of a five figure fee. He set about the industry we all love and its 'dramas' in such an irreverent way that everyone in the room was left crying with laughter long after he sat down. We will not see his like again" Here's to the next 25 years. DZD is in good hands.

The product is at base level a super bright LED light box which is then used to backlight a special 3D image that can be viewed without glasses for a very eye catching display! The technology used is a unique form of 3D imaging where objects appear to physically float in front of the screen to the extent that viewers believe they can actually grab the displayed objects. The depth view is also infinite so the overall effect is quite stunning. Small steps to the sides and up and down allow the viewer to fully immerse themselves in the 3D image and capture different viewing

angles to amazing effect. The ideal viewing distance is about three meters; however the 3D image also looks equally realistic from greater distances. The effect is the most intriguing, when the viewer approaches the 3D image head-on. Contact: t: 0845 625 35 45 e: [email protected] w: www.w-co.co.uk/3d-led-lightboxes.php

Noise in the workplace

SDEA members, and Health & Safety compliance specialists, Citation explain how excessive noise in the workplace can result in noise induced hearing loss and other conditions such as ringing in the ear (Tinnitus). These health conditions can be irreversible and have life changing effects, e.g. Tinnitus can lead to mental health conditions. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations places a duty on employers to assess the risks presented by noise. Within the workplace environment there are many sources of noise and employers must identify those that present a significant risk and implement controls to eliminate or reduce that risk.

In order to identify if there is a noise problem within the workplace an initial assessment can be made by asking the following questions:

• Is the noise in the work environment intrusive, e.g like a busy street, a vacuum cleaner or a crowded restaurant for most of the working day?

• Do employees have to raise their voices to carry out a normal conversation when about 2 meters apart for at least part of the day?

• Do employees use noisy powered tools or machinery for more than half an hour each day?

• Is the industry noisy, e.g. construction, demolition or road repair; woodworking; plastics processing; engineering; textile manufacture; general fabrication; pressing or stamping; paper or board making; canning or bottling?

• Are there noises due to impacts, such as hammering, pneumatic impact tools etc. Explosive sources, such as cartridge operated tools or detonators?

If any of the above are relevant in the workplace it is likely that employees are at risk of exposure and that action will be required by employers to control this risk.

The risk is primarily based on the

noise levels measured in decibels (dB), the amount of time employees are exposed and the existing measures in place to minimise exposure.

Exposure limits and actions to be taken

The regulations provide two exposure action values for noise. These are levels at which employers must take action.

If any employee is likely to be exposed to noise at or above the Lower Exposure Action Value, which is set at 80dB(A) averaged over a working day or week then employers must:

• Undertake a noise risk assessment and regularly review it.

• Make hearing protection available and recommend employees wear the equipment.

• Establish a maintenance programme for equipment to ensure noise levels are reduced to as low as reasonably practicable.

• Provide information, instruction and training.

• Implement a health screening programme e.g. for those employees susceptible to noise exposure.

There is also an Upper Exposure Action Value of 85dB(A) averaged over a working day or week. If this level is exceeded, a formal programme of control measures must be implemented. These include:

• Reduce the noise levels to as low a level as is reasonably practicable.

• Clearly identify hearing protection zones where hearing protection is MANDATORY for all employees

entering the area or undertaking the activity.

• Implement a health screening programme, to preferably include audiometric testing/ hearing checks.

The regulations also state an Exposure Limit Value (ELV) which must not be exceeded. This is set at 87dB(A) of averaged daily or weekly exposure. If it is found this limit is reached or exceeded then employers must:

• Activate a programme of noise reduction.

• Reduce noise levels to below the ELV.

The table below gives examples of typical noise sources and their noise levels within the workplace.

It should be noted that the exposure time to the noise source will impact on the resultant exposure values, so an assessment of each source of significant noise will be required.

Employees’ exposure to noise can be determined using the HSE noise calculators which can be found on their website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/ calculator.htm.

Background Boots introduced a brand new look for its 2014 Christmas gift selection in 317 stores, emphasising quality over quantity. CJ Retail Solutions was appointed to provide full project management for the installation of the campaign. The activity was part of integrated marketing activity, therefore all stores had to be completed by a specific date. The Project This project involved two types of installation. Tier One stores, of which there were 120, received display aids from four suppliers along with seven pieces of Christmas furniture, including Plush Toys Christmas Tree, Star Gift Hero, Premium Tower, Low Table, Brand Wardrobe for gondola ends, Brand Wardrobe FSDU and Table Tower. A further 197 Tier Two stores were fitted with Star Gift Stackers and Star Gift Hero units. All 317 stores had a different planogram and required various levels of reconfiguring work before the Christmas furniture could be installed.

With such a complex campaign to deliver over just five nights, CJ Retail Solutions employed a number of tactics that they knew would be vital to achieving exceptional compliance rates, including: thorough training for its installation team, careful pre-project preparation - including access audits to identify and address any problems with access to the stores involved – and pre-roll out communication with stores. In addition it provided real time during and post installation reporting as well as centrally managed warehousing and distribution of all furniture, which was especially important as there were four separate suppliers. Dedicated snagging teams were also created to support the installers whilst on site.

When John Lewis approached Stylo looking for a cost effective, sustainable and eco-friendly way of displaying product, they didn’t have to look too far. Re-board is made from recycled cardboard, is 100% recyclable after use, and easy to assemble but robust enough to hold merchandise for long periods of time. The proof is in the John Lewis window displays, where tables made from Re-board have been used for numerous schemes including the Valentine’s windows earlier this year. When each window scheme changes, only the table vinyl and hanging graphics need to be

updated to give it a fresh new look in keeping with the chosen theme. If you want cost effective ways of producing sustainable window displays then Re-board is the perfect material. Stylo have many ready made designs and cutting files on offer that can be adapted to suit all, whether you are looking for free standing display units and signage to 3D fabrication and props. In recent months we’ve seen an increasing trend in the use of fabric as a wall covering in commercial environments. This cross over from home interiors was inevitable but until now there hasn’t been a suitable solution that could cope with demanding wear and tear. SM’art’s latest edition is Trama, a range inspired by fabric textures such as linen and presented in four contemporary colours. Trama comes in a wide range of coordinated products which allow you to design any kind of environment for high wear areas such as corridors and communal areas, Trama is perfect.
