When I reflect on all that we accomplished at Shore Medical Center in 2012, I am proud

of and humbled by the great strides made by every member of our organization. The opening

of our Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion in September of 2011 did not represent the

culmination of our journey. Rather, it marked the first step toward our exciting future.

The year 2012 gave us the opportunity to leverage our physical transformation so as to grow

our established service lines, introduce several new healthcare initiatives and evolve to a new

level of exceptional, patient-centered care.

The key to our future success will be fueled by a renewed commitment to improved

performance by each of our passionate physicians, employees and leaders. Last year, we

welcomed a trio of new executives who have made an immediate impact on our culture. In Chief

A NOTE FROMTHE PRESIDENT

2

Ron JohnsonPresident & Chief Executive Officer, Shore Medical Center

Medical Officer Jeanne M. Rowe, MD, Shore Vice President and Foundation Chief Development

Officer Thomas J. Mundell and Shore Physicians Group Chief Administrative Officer Mark

Stephens, we have added three exceptional professionals who have distinguished themselves as

progressive leaders committed to positively positioning Shore for the future.

In 2012, we focused tremendous energy on our core service lines, and saw steady increases in

many areas led by the continued growth of our Advanced Spine & Orthopedic Institute. Our

Medical Office Building became home to Penn Cardiology Somers Point, a group of five renowned

cardiologists who provide incredible inpatient and outpatient cardiac care for the community.

We also worked hard to lay the foundation for a truly innovative intensivist program, collaborating

diligently with Shore Physicians Group pulmonologists James J. O’Connor, III, MD, Sallustio Del

Re, MD, FCCP, and William Adams, DO. We also saw the creation of Shore’s Advanced Pulmonary

Diagnostic Center (APDC). Led by Dr. Bennett Ojserkis, the APDC reflects the advanced care and

commitment to excellence present throughout Shore Medical Center.

As we continue to seek new avenues in which to provide state-of-the-art, university level care

to our community, we continue to benefit from aligning with some of the region’s highest quality

providers to offer our patients the best care possible. Our continued relationships with Penn

Medicine, the Jefferson Neuroscience Network, physicians from the Rothman Institute and

Advanced Radiology Solutions complement the exceptional care provided by our passionate

medical staff members.

Our many successes can be attributed to all those who make Shore Medical Center the best.

I would like to thank everyone who has invested their time, energy and passion to make

Shore Medical Center the leading facility it is today, including our Board members, leadership,

medical and support staff, donors, volunteers, civic leaders, business partners and members

of the community.

Nationally, hospital volumes were down between 4 and 13 percent last year. At Shore, our 2012

volumes were relatively flat as compared to the prior year. This is strong testament to the care we

provide, our reputation within the community and our ability to adapt in a changing environment.

As 2013 begins, I know we are ready to meet the challenges of the evolving face of healthcare. I

am excited about Shore’s future, and can assure you that Our Best is Yet to Come!

Sincerely,

3

2012 GROWTH

Throughout 2012, Shore’s Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging

Department raised the bar in providing state-of-the-art testing

options. In February, Shore became the only healthcare facility

in the region to offer DaTscan, a procedure that provides

early and accurate diagnosis of Parkinsonian syndromes,

including Parkinson’s disease. The test involves administering

a small dosage of imaging drug and taking images of the brain.

By utilizing DaTscan, physicians can eliminate some of the

guesswork involved in diagnosis, allowing for appropriate

treatment regimens to begin as quickly as possible.

Shore also became the first in the country to install

the Aquilion™ PRIME Ultra Low Dose CT system

from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc., featuring

advanced dose-reduction and image-processing

software. The Aquilion PRIME’s large bore opening

offers a more spacious feeling for patients, while a

higher table weight limit expands the range of patients

who can be imaged. In addition, the Aquilion PRIME

comes standard with industry leading dose-reduction

software. All patients who visit the main CT department

receive low-dose scans and biopsies. Additionally, there is a

specific pediatric package for use with children.

Further continuing its commitment to providing the highest

quality care, Shore Medical Center began offering PET/CT scans

through a partnership with Shared Imaging, LLC. A mobile

GE ST PET/CT Scanner comes to Shore weekly to provide

physicians with superior image quality and the means to quickly

create effective treatment plans for patients. PET/CT is a

powerful imaging technique that delivers a precise view of how

the body functions, as well as detailed anatomical information

to enhance patient outcomes. The non-invasive test accurately

images metabolic and anatomic information in a single scan,

allowing Shore’s medical professionals to diagnose problems,

determine the extent of the disease, prescribe treatment and

track progress.

In 2012, Shore Medical Center continued to build on

the university level care we offer to the community

through the introduction of several new initiatives,

ranging from technological advances to the

development of new service lines and partnerships.

These areas of growth position us to maintain our

commitment to providing the highest quality,

patient-centered care in the region.

Advances in Diagnostic Imaging

4

Finally, in June, Shore Medical Center was pleased to welcome its

new radiology and diagnostic imaging partners, Advanced Radiology

Solutions (ARS). The ARS team includes 25 fellowship-trained, board

certified radiologists who cover the broad spectrum of radiology,

including interventional radiology, breast imaging, musculoskeletal

radiology and neuroradiology. ARS, under the leadership of President

and Medical Director Thomas Yu, MD, has a history of team building

and providing patients with a seamless continuum of care. Through its

interventional radiology program, ARS has developed joint ventures

in the fields of nephrology and vascular surgery, leading to successful

access and endovascular aneurysm repair programs. ARS’ radiologists

are also trained in coronary CTA, CT colonography and breast MRI

interpretations, making ARS one of the region’s leading destinations

for radiology services.

Advanced Pulmonary Diagnostic CenterIn July, Shore was proud to introduce the Advanced Pulmonary Diagnostic

Center, the first center of its kind in southern New Jersey to address the

growing number of patients being diagnosed with lung nodules. Located

within the Shore Cancer Center, this program offers a one-stop approach to

providing patients with a fast, convenient and comprehensive way to have

their nodules evaluated and treated.

Under the direction of leading area pulmonologist

Dr. Bennett Ojserkis, Shore’s Advanced Pulmonary

Diagnostic Center brings together the region’s most

skilled and highly trained advanced diagnostic

pulmonologist, evidence-based practice guidelines

and state-of-the-art technology to deliver timely,

convenient, all-inclusive care for patients with lung

nodules, masses or enlarged lymph nodes. Each

patient receives thorough testing and consultation

to determine their best course of action. This

approach simplifies the usual complexities of

the healthcare system and helps to minimize

unnecessary medical or surgical procedures.

Score from The Leapfrog Group, an independent

national nonprofit organization run by employers and

other large purchasers of health benefits. Calculated under the

guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon

Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score

uses 26 measures of publicly available

hospital safety data to produce a single score

representing a hospital’s

overall capacity to keep

patients safe from infection,

injury and medical and

medication errors.

The American Alliance

of Healthcare Providers named Shore

Medical Center one of America’s most

customer-friendly hospitals in its 2012 list

of the Hospital of Choice Top One Hundred. Shore was honored

for implementing a quality healthcare program that successfully

results in courteous, compassionate and caring service for

patients, their families and the community we serve.

Shore Medical Center’s Department of Laboratory Medicine

received its two-year accreditation from the Accreditation

Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The

CAP accreditation is designed to ensure laboratory

patients receive the highest quality of care.

12

Measuring ExcellenceAn uncompromising commitment to quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do at Shore Medical Center. Shore

voluntarily submits clinical data to the national Hospital Compare database, a quality clearinghouse that is part of the Department of

Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA).

The scientific evidence gleaned from patient medical records is converted into a percentage rating that conveys Shore’s adherence to

defined protocols in the areas of heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care improvement.

When patients select their healthcare facility, performance improvement data serves as a useful tool. However, prospective patients

must understand that all reported data reflects a snapshot in time and should be taken into consideration with many other factors.

These include past experiences with the facility, patient satisfaction scores, actual outcome measurements and the recommendation

of physicians, family members and friends.

Heart AttackA heart attack (also called an acute myocardial

infarction, or AMI) happens when the arteries

leading to the heart become blocked and the blood

supply slows or stops. These indicators deal with

some of the standards of care that, if appropriate,

are provided to someone who has a heart attack.

The graph shows the percentage of patients at

Shore Medical Center who received treatments

known to be effective for most adults who have had

a heart attack, while comparing them to the April-

June 2012 Joint Commission median benchmark.

OverallShore Medical Center continually strives

to improve the process of core measures

surrounding heart attacks, heart failure,

pneumonia and surgical care. In 2012, overall

scores for each category exceeded 98 percent.

13

Pneumonia Care IndicatorsPneumonia is a serious lung infection that causes

difficulty breathing, fever, cough and fatigue. These

indicators show some of the recommended treatments

for pneumonia. The graph shows the percentage

of patients at Shore Medical Center who received

treatments known to be effective for most adults with

pneumonia, while comparing them to the April-June

2012 Joint Commission median benchmark.

Surgical Care ImprovementHospitals can reduce the risk of wound infection

after surgery by making sure patients get the right

medicines at the right time on the day of surgery.

These indicators show some of the standards of

care. The graph shows the percentage of patients

at Shore Medical Center who received treatments

recommended for most adult surgical patients

and compares them to the April-June 2012 Joint

Commission median benchmark.

2012 QUALITY HIGHLIGHTS

Heart Failure IndicatorsHeart failure is the weakening of the heart’s ability

to pump blood throughout the body. When heart

failure is present, the body doesn’t receive sufficient

oxygen and nutrients. These indicators show some

of the standards of care that, if appropriate, are

provided to someone who has heart failure. The

graph shows the percentage of patients at Shore

Medical Center who received treatments known to

be effective for most adults who have heart failure,

while comparing them to the April-June 2012 Joint

Commission median benchmark.

SHORE PHYSICIANS GROUP

In 2012, Shore Physicians Group (SPG) experienced a robust

first year, growing to include 20 passionate providers dedicated

to treating people not as patients, but as individuals. SPG takes

a highly individualized approach to the well being of the people

and families they serve across many disciplines, including internal

medicine, family medicine, general, laparoscopic, plastic and

reconstructive surgery, pulmonary medicine and gynecology.

In March, SPG celebrated the opening of its flagship location at

2605 Shore Road in Northfield at the site of the former House and

Garden. Additionally, SPG also expanded to include a pulmonary

practice in Somers Point and a gynecology practice in Ocean City,

all in addition to family and internal medicine practices in Somers

Point and Northfield.

SPIRIT OF SHORE

No One Dies AloneNo One Dies Alone is a volunteer program that provides

companions for patients near death who do not have any family

or close friends to be with them in their final hours. Volunteers

sit with patients and offer solace through meditation, music,

poems or simply through touch.

Spirit of Shore – ProgramsExceptional clinicians, advanced technology and knowledgeable

staff are all critical components of a successful healthcare

organization. Just as important to the healing process is

providing for the emotional and spiritual needs of our patients.

At Shore Medical Center, we recognize the importance of

meeting patients’ needs through providing individualized

attention to details and creating exceptional patient and family

experiences. Every facet of this patient-centered care plays an

essential role in helping the people we care for recover faster

and prepare for their transition back home.

Shore Medical Center is an affiliate member of The Planetree

Organization, a global, non-profit group that promotes patient-

centered care in healing environments. As part of our journey

to become a designated Planetree facility, Shore is passionate

about enhancing patient care throughout the medical center.

That includes the community resource library located within

our Surgical Pavilion, our Department of Patient and Family

Experience and a number of additional programs dedicated to

humanizing and demystifying healthcare.

Integrative TherapyShore’s utilization of integrative therapies works in tandem

with traditional healthcare services for acute pain, symptom

management and stress management. Our Patient Comfort

Menu includes back and hand massages in addition to

reflexology and Reiki treatments. Spirit of Shore team members,

many of whom hold certifications in integrative therapies,

provide complimentary chair massage, Reiki, healing touch,

hand massage and aromatherapy sessions for members of the

community, physicians and hospital staff.

Patient and Family Advisory CouncilShore’s Patient and Family Advisory Council is made up of

former Shore patients and family members, community members

and volunteers. Meeting bi-monthly, group members share

stories, provide valuable feedback on their hospital experiences

and assist leadership in decision making by incorporating their

experiences into Shore’s philosophy and operation. Shore staff

members also use these meetings to educate the council about

the medical center and healthcare issues in general.

20

SPIRIT OF SHORE

Care for the PatientThrough its Spirit of Shore initiatives,

Shore Medical Center offers a host of

supplemental programs designed to

help bring a smile to patients when they

need it the most.

Circle of FriendsThis group of Shore employees and

volunteers creates, collects and distributes

handmade blankets, shawls and lap covers

for patients in need of a little comfort.

Caring ClownsShore’s Bumper “T” Caring Clowns use

laughter to brighten a patient’s day. These

volunteers, each possessing the honorary

degree of “funnyboneologist,” are trained in

sensitivity and listening in medical settings.

Pet TherapyVolunteers are not all of the two-legged

variety. Pet therapy at Shore provides an

opportunity for patients to visit with one of

the medical center’s trained therapy dogs.

Activity and Book CartsPatients and their families can take

advantage of a fun distraction, whether it

is a good book, a board game or a puzzle

donated to Shore and distributed by one of

our dedicated volunteers.

2012 Planetree ConferenceThe 2012 Planetree Conference was held in Palm Desert, CA, in October. Two

members of Shore’s Leadership Team – Administrative Director Elizabeth

Cianfrani, RN, MSN, and Palliative Care Manager Maureen Deely, RN, MSN – made

presentations during the week-long event. In addition, members of Shore Medical

Center were recognized for their efforts in providing patients with effective

treatment, as well as a compassionate healthcare experience.

Spirit of Shore Award WinnersDr. Charles Roche, Medical Director of Shore’s Hospitalist Program, was named

Physician of the Year, an award given annually to the physician who best exemplifies

the Planetree model of patient-centered care and whose actions set an example for

other medical staff members.

Nurse’s Aide Oralia (Olivia) Miguel received the Caregiver of the Year Award.

Miguel, who works on the medical center’s 5th Stainton unit, was recognized for her

positive influence on her peers, patients and their families, in addition to her ability

to make stressful situations as comforting as possible.

Care for the CaregiverOne of the vital components of providing patient-centered care is recognizing the

exceptional effort caregivers put forth on a daily basis to help patients heal. Simple

gestures such as a pat on the back or a fun event go a long way toward saying “thank

you” to the passionate men and women at Shore who provide quality care.

In 2012, Shore offered several special programs for employees, including a discount

program for area entertainment and shopping venues, enhanced pharmacy services,

computer tutoring and access to cardiovascular exercise equipment within the

medical center after work hours.

Throughout the year, events were held to bring staff together outside of the work

environment, including Shore’s employee softball league, a Summer Beach Bash held

at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and Water Park and monthly Spirit of Shore socials.

Also in 2012, Shore continued its series of Spirit of Shore staff retreats.

These events provided employees with an opportunity to improve

relationships, increase organizational awareness, enhance interpersonal

skills and increase individual and team accountability for providing

patient-centered care through a variety of discussions and activities.

When Superstorm Sandy struck southern New Jersey in October of 2012,

the Shore Medical Center community rallied to aid co-workers

impacted by the storm. Through Shore’s Employee Embrace Fund

and other donations, more than 45 medical center employees

received assistance.

Giving People Hope

34

A M E S S A G E F R O M

THOMAS J. MUNDELLWhen people look back on 2011, they will always remember it as a milestone year in the storied history of Shore Medical Center. The construction of the state-of-the-art Ben and Flora Baker Surgical Pavilion and groundbreaking Harry & Edith Klinghoffer Pediatric Care Center within the James Klinghoffer Emergency Pavilion transformed Shore from a small community hospital into Shore Medical Center – South Jersey’s healthcare leader.

While the changes which took place at the Shore Medical Center Foundation in 2012 may not on the surface appear as dramatic, it is my hope that when people look back they will view our efforts over these last 12 months in much the same way; as a milestone in the Foundation’s history.

Since joining the Shore Medical Center and greater South Jersey community, my family and I have been welcomed with open arms. However, what we have found here is more than just a warm and wonderful community. We have seen people from all walks of life who care enough about their families, friends and neighbors to ensure there is university level healthcare available right here at the South Jersey shore.

They have used philanthropy as their tool in helping to not only construct Shore Medical Center, but attract the leading physicians and advanced technology needed to help Shore expand its campus and ambulatory footprint, while remaining on the cutting edge of healthcare education, prevention, diagnosis and cures.

My focus since coming to the Foundation has been to put in place an organization that will pave the way to create new and exciting avenues for philanthropy and “Giving People Hope” – our Foundation’s recently-adopted marketing campaign. Through our newly-created Annual Giving Program – which will include legacy giving arms such as The Lightkeeper’s Society, Stainton Society and Stainton Associates – we see a vehicle that will allow people to Give To Shore today, while establishing a relationship with Shore that will translate into deeper commitments through our Major and Planned Giving programs.

In writing to you, I could not envision a better placement for this letter. It is preceded by Shore Medical Center’s 2012 year in review and followed by stories from people who have experienced the high level care Shore provides and responded generously in their support of Shore. I hope you will take a few minutes and read through Shore’s accomplishments and these wonderful stories.

On behalf of the Shore Medical Center Foundation team, I would like to thank you for your continued friendship, support and generosity. We look forward to working with you in 2013 to support the Mission, Vision and Values of Shore Medical Center.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. MundellVice President of Shore Medical Center& Chief Development Officer of the Shore Medical Center Foundation

KLINGHOFFER

36

KLINGHOFFEREngaging in conversation with Jim Klinghoffer is truly a treat. He speaks lovingly about his parents; longingly about the America he grew up in; eloquently about the golden era of motion pictures; and intellectually about the world in which we all live. You can get Jim to speak about almost any subject, except Jim Klinghoffer.

Philanthropy isn’t something Jim Klinghoffer does. It’s who he is. Jim’s passion for giving was kindled by his parents, Harry and Edith Klinghoffer, who encouraged him to pay his success forward to help others.

“I give because my parents were very charitable people and they instilled that value in me,” he said. “What brought me to Shore was the recognition that these are dedicated people who deal in life and death every day. They have a special calling that not everyone in life gets.”

Jim was born in 1940 in Asbury Park, the city where his parents met. His father, who was born in Newark, and mother, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1936, moved the family to Lancaster, PA. shortly thereafter, to pursue an opportunity in the newspaper distribution business. In doing so, Jim will tell you that they left behind the comfort of family and their neighborhood, a move that took both character and courage.

Following World War II, Jim’s father expanded his business to Atlantic City. When their extended family would not leave their comfort zone and join the business in Lancaster, Jim’s father traded that portion of the business in return for a distributorship in Newark, which he eventually parlayed into a business that stretched up and down the east coast.

For many years, Jim viewed Shore as many did – a small community hospital where little was really happening. But, as he likes to say, “That’s really changed over the last few years.”

When Shore decided to build a groundbreaking hybrid pediatricunit–thefirstofitskindinthestateofNewJersey–Jimmade a major gift to dedicate what is now the Harry and Edith Klinghoffer Pediatric Care Center in his parents’ memory.

“What brought me to Shore was the recognition that these are dedicated people who deal in life and death every day. They have a special calling that not everyone in life gets.”

37

“I kept the emergency department for myself,” he said of the gift to help construct the James Klinghoffer Emergency Pavilion. “Shore’s emergency department treats over 46,000 people a year, and that’s a lot of people to be able to help. At night, I sometimes park the car outside the hospital. As I stare up at our names on the buildings and watch the ambulances pull in, I’m overwhelmed that my life has brought me to this point. To be able to see what I’ve done for people who need doctors and nurses and hospitals, well I’m really taken aback.”

That little story is about as close as Jim will allow himself in terms of recognition. “I don’t want medals, or badges or plaques or dinners,” he continued. “I remember one time two weeks before an affair for the medical center, I drove over and just spent time talking to the doctors, nurses and execs. I wanted to be with people I put my money on, so we shared some humor and had a good time for an hour. Then got in my car, went home and never ended up going to the affair.”

You will hear people in the community say that, for a man who does so much, you never see Jim Klinghoffer around. While that may be true, it is funny given how much his presencehasbenefitedShoreMedicalCenterandthehealth and welfare of the people of South Jersey.

“As a family, we believe it’s important to have a strong, regional medical center within the community,”

39

Mostdefinitionstellusthatphilanthropymustbemore than just a charitable donation; it is an effort that must be undertaken based on an altruistic desire to improve human welfare.

Bythisdefinition, theGurwiczFamily–parents Ed and Bonnie, sons Joseph and Mitchell and daughters-in-law Kathy and Diana – is the family portrait of giving. They donate both their time and money to a host of worthwhile organizations throughout the region, and neither seek out nor want recognition. When it comes to the role they have played in helping Shore Medical Center blossom into a leading regional healthcare provider, they are simply “honored to be a part of Shore’s growth” and will tell you “they have in no way played a more integral role than the thousands of people who have supported Shore.”

Whilethisselflesspointofviewisattheheartoftrue philanthropy, when it comes to Shore Medical Center, the Gurwicz Family’s record of giving paints quite a different picture.

Ed and Bonnie have a history that dates back to joining the Stainton Society in 1993. Throughout the years, they have generously supported all of Shore’s major campaigns, including the Millennium, Legacy and Shore Tomorrow Campaigns, the latter providing the funds needed to help construct Shore’s state-of-the-art Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion.

“My father and grandparents were immigrants, and through their experiences they developed a sense of how important it is to give back to the community,” said Mitchell. “Going back in history, our family has been in business and a part of the

community for 60 years. Throughout that time, we have looked for opportunities to contribute.”

There are a number of things that are special about the Gurwicz Family’s philanthropic relationship with Shore Medical Center and its Foundation. Beyond hosting the D. Allen Stretch Memorial Golf Tournament at their Harbor Pines Golf Course for the last 15 years, Joe and Mitchell have each found ways to give as generously of their time as they do withtheirfinances.JoewasamemberoftheShoreEnterprise Board in the mid 2000’s. Mitchell, who was recruited to serve on the Foundation Board when it was formed in 2005, just completed an unprecedented three years as its Chairman.

“Bill (retired Executive Director Bill Elliott) used to say that, almost without exception, nowadays it is no longer a given that the next generation will support what the previous generation did,” said Mitchell. “Our family is a hybrid in that we will continue our legacy of giving if we can modify our support and make it meaningful. That has been easy to do with Shore, given the new Surgical Pavilion, the access they provide to leading physicians and their outstanding pediatrics program.

“As a family we believe it’s important to have a strong, regional medical center within the community,” he continued. “Shore has been there for us, and hopefully will be there for our kids.”

Mitchell points to his mother’s two recent hip replacement surgeries, both in terms of the convenient access to excellent surgeons from the Rothman Institute and the support she and the family received from the Lightkeeper’s Society, as perfect examples of ways Shore excels in what it provides right here in our community.

Expanding on the Lightkeeper’s Society, Mitchell explained, “No matter who you are or what your situation, you always need an advocate in today’s healthcare system. Shore’s Lightkeeper’s Society has certainly proven to be that.”

Giving People Hope is what the Shore Medical Center Foundation does. Giving People like the Gurwicz Family is how we are able to do it.

CANNATA

“Where much hasbeen given, much

is expected.”

40

41

Tony and Ginny Cannata know their life together has been blessed in many ways, including with the gift of good health. They are thankful their decision to make a Planned Gift to the Shore Medical Center Foundation did not come in the shadow of a serious illness.

“We’re grateful that we’ve never been in need of the services offered by Shore Medical Center,” said Tony. “That being said, Ginny and I feel that where much has been given, much is expected.”

The quote from the scriptures aside, it doesn’t take much to see that Ginny and Tony are both spiritual individuals, deeply involved in the community through their philanthropic support of Shore Medical Center and their church. In fact, over the last year, Ginny has served as a Shore volunteer, offering comfort and communion to patients within the medical center.

“We believe helping others is so important,” said Ginny. “I enjoy volunteering at Shore and at our church. In life you have to count your blessings and give back in whatever ways you can.”

Happily married for 28 years, Tony and Ginny relocated to the Harbor Pines section of Egg Harbor Township six years ago from their former home in Blackwood, NJ. While on the surface they may seem new to the community, Tony has been selling real estate in the Ocean City area for two decades. Seven years ago, after a successful career in corporate America serving as an assistant to CEO’s at major companies like Strawbridge & Clothier and GS1US, Ginny joined Tony in his real estate business. “But I wouldn’t join him in the commute, which is why we came down here a year later,” Ginny quipped.

It was Ginny who made the initial connection to Shore, meeting the medical center’s former CEO on the golf course. “The more we spoke to people, the more we heard about the great things that were happening at Shore,” Ginny said. “No matter where you live, you need

to know that there is quality care available close to home. We became comfortable that Shore could provide us with just that should the need ever arise.”

Tony echoes Ginny’s sentiments. In fact, his feelings come from a highly-educated background. After a successful career in banking, Tony worked 11 years as an executive for Blue Cross of Pennsylvania (now Independence Blue Cross & Blue Shield) and two years in telecommunications at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

“So much has changed in the world of healthcare,” said Tony. “Going back 20 years, everything was focused around the hospital. Even if you just needed testing, you usually found yourself staying overnight. Today you need

a medical center that has advanced capabilities, as well as leading outpatient testing facilities, services throughout the community and ties to expert physicians. Shore gives us all of that.”

When Tony and Ginny decided to establish a Charitable Trust at the end of 2012,theirfirstinklingwastocheckouttheFoundation’s website to see if it offered an acceptable option. When they liked what they read, they immediately reached out to Senior Development OfficerGabeStaino, andinlessthanamonth the trust was in place.

“We’re getting up there in years, and we want to have a strong community medical center,” said Tony, whose comment jokingly drew a speak for yourself look from Ginny. “We like the Lightkeeper‘s Society function and the support it provides us.

“ShoreMedicalCenterhasstrongaffiliationswithPennand other leading providers, and we like that about Shore,”Tonycontinued.“Theseaffiliationsandtheirspectacular new facilities are here for us, just two miles from where we live. You never know what life will bring, but Ginny and I would be comfortable coming to Shore for any healthcare issue. It’s nice to know we don’t have to go to Philadelphia because Shore is close to home, which is very important to us.”

While Millie Wheaton has spent the last 20 years being as some people might call her a “Snow Bird,” there is only one place in the world that she really calls home – and that is the South Jersey shore. She presently lives in Upper Township – the city of her birth – with her companion of 10 years, Raymond Knorr. Previously, she lived “all around Ocean City” with her late husband of 43 years, Ted Wheaton.

WhenMilliereflectsbackoverheryearsinUpperTownshipand Ocean City, one of the constants in her life is Shore Medical Center. It began with the birth of her now retired son Jack – who was born at Shore in 1949 and resides in Fairfield,Connecticut, afterahighlysuccessfulcareerinthe New York advertising industry. Most recently it was a Lightkeeper’s Society-assisted visit to the Emergency Department with Raymond last October. On both occasions and all the times in between, Shore has always been there for Millie and her loved ones.

“When I think back to when Jack was born, Shore was just a tiny little building,” said Millie, who spends the winters near her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, anesthesiologist Dr. Joseph Comfort, in Eustin, Florida. “The changes that have takenplaceatShorehavebeenabsolutelymagnificent. It’s incredible the way it has grown over the years.”

The philanthropic efforts of Millie and her late husband, Ted, have contributed a lot to the growth Shore has enjoyed. Millie says she’s “extremely proud” to have a plaque in her honor in the CardioVascular Institute, as well as a number of dedications in memory of Ted spread throughout the medical center.

“My husband believed in Shore, and he and I made a great number of contributions to the hospital,” said Millie, who has also given generously of her time, dating back to the 1970’s when she started volunteering as a Shore Pink Lady. “In the early days, a lot of the doctors in the area wouldn’t send the people to Shore. They felt the Philadelphia hospitals were so much better. Now, and I

know this for a fact, all of the physicians I am familiar with – a lot of the top surgeons and specialists – brag about working at Shore.”

A few years back, when Shore began its Lightkeeper’s Societyprogram,Milliewasthefirstoneonboard.“I’llneverforget I was in Florida and (retired Foundation Executive Director) Bill Elliott called me and said, ‘I just want to tell you thatyou’retheveryfirstpersontosendusadonation.’

“Last October, Ray knew that he needed to get to the hospital quickly,” Millie continued. “On the way, I called the Lightkeeper’s Society hotline and within 15 minutes of arriving in the Emergency Department, our Lightkeeper’s Liaison Joanne was at our side. She stayed with me for more than two hours while Ray was treated. We had dinner together and she made sure Ray and I were both taken care of every step of the way. Ray was admitted that evening, andtheveryfirstthingthenextmorningMaryMcGuckin, who is the Lightkeeper’s Manager, visited for over an hour, keeping us company and making sure all of our needs were met.”

When pressed, Millie will admit that like a lot of the area surgeons and specialists, she too enjoys bragging about Shore. And why not. After all, it is the generosity of people like Millie Wheaton that helped make Shore her community’s leading center for medicine.

THANKSHoward S. Stainton was a successful entrepreneur known throughout the region for his many accomplishments and generosity to his community.

Mr. Stainton served on Shore Medical Center’s hospital board from 1941 through the 1950s. While Howard passed away in 1979 at the age of 93, his legacy lives on. His estate, via the Stainton Trust, has donated more than $9 million to major capital improvements at Shore Medical Center, including the Howard S. Stainton Pavilion in 1976.

In the spirit of Howard S. Stainton’s humble philanthropy, the Stainton Society – the largest fundraising organization in the Shore Medical Center family – was founded in 1989 to allow individuals, families and businesses to pledge annual support to Shore Medical Center.

The impact of the Stainton Society is apparent throughout Shore Medical Center’s campus. Members have helped fund a number of project and equipment needs, including aQuickCareFacility,OrthopedicLaminarAirflowSurgicalSuite, Emergency Room renovations, new CT Scanner, CriticalCareCenter,PET/CTScanner,Shore’sCancerCenter and CardioVascular Institute and, most recently, Shore’s Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion.

Annual membership gifts range from $500 to $4,999, and all funds are used to ensure the evolving healthcare needs of our community are met with the region’s most advanced technology and clinical expertise.

Shore’s growth and endless pursuit of excellence has been made possible over the years only through the passion and generosity of the community. By making a donation to the Shore

Medical Center Foundation and joining the Stainton Society, members help support the programs, services and equipment that impact and save lives.

Planned Giving

The Shore Medical Center Foundation’s Planned Giving Program

assists donors in preparing charitable gifts for during and after

their lifetimes. Planned gifts are sometimes referred to as ultimate

gifts, because they require planning and, often, assistance from a

professional advisor. Unlike cash donations, they are typically made

from assets in your estate rather than disposable income, and come

to fruition upon your passing.

The most common planned gift is a bequest in your will or living trust.

Other planned gifts include charitable gift annuities; charitable

remainder trusts; endowment funds; retirement plan assets; and life

insurance policies. At Shore Medical Center, we work with donors

so they can support Shore’s Mission, Vision and Values while also

ensuringtheirfamily’sfinancialsecurity.

CARINGVisiting the medical center can be a stressful experience. During a patient’s stay, they, a family member or friend might be touched by the words or actions of one of the compassionate Shore physicians, nurses or staff members who care for them from admission through discharge. The Guardian Angel program was established to provide an opportunity to say thank you to these special caregivers.

The Guardian Angel program gives patients, their families and friends a vehicle to show their appreciation by making a donation to Shore Medical Center in recognition of their Guardian Angel. These gifts also shine a spotlight on Shore’s exceptional caregivers, making them an example for their peers by highlighting the Guardian Angel’s commitment to patient-centered care.

Guardian Angels can be anyone, from valet parking attendants to Emergency Department physicians or nurses.

As such, the Guardian Angel program is a powerful tool that can be used to single out those Shore staff members who make a difference in providing exceptional patient-centered care.

Today, the Guardian Angel program has grown to include a Guardian Angel of the Month Award. Each year, Shore hosts a Guardian Angel Pinning Ceremony to honor our recipients, each of whom receives a pin they can proudly display as a symbol of the extraordinary care they provide.
