SHORT COURSE IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

The purpose of the Short Course in Highway Engineering is to aid the newly appointed County Superintendents of Highways in preparing for their duties, and also to help any who may aspire to become .the assistants of the County Superintendents of Highways, or who seek employment under the State Highway Commission. It is hoped that the instruction given, the demonstrations made, and the machinery exhibited will prove of interest also to contractors, contractor's foremen, and to Highway Commissioners and others interested in road improvement.

It is not expected that the product of the Short Course will be experienced, efficient road engineers ; but it is believed that even experienced civil engineers who have not made a specialty of road engineering, may receive valuable help. It is also believed that men without experience in general engineering or in road work, may receive valuable suggestions concerning road and bridge construction, and may also acquire some first-hand knowledge of road materials and machinery.

CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION

There will be no charges of any kind by the University. The course will be open to any one without examination or other condition, except to register in Room 221, Engineering Building, upon arrival.

ROOM AND BOARD

The residences and rooming houses near the University in Champaign and Urbana will be canvassed for information concerning room and board for those who attend the Short Course in Highway Engineering. The data thus collected will be in the hands of the Employment Bureau of the Y. M. C. A. in its building adjoining the campus, and may be consulted by any one. The street cars between Urbana and Champaign run near all the railroad stations in both cities; and theY. M. C. A. building may be reached on the street cars, either directly or by transfer.

MAIL

l\t:lail or prepaid telegrams addressed to 203 Engineering Building, Urbana, will be distributed to persons attending the Short Course.

QUESTION BOX

Any one desiring information upon any particular topic connected with road or bridge work is invited to write his question upon a slip of paper and deposit it at the earliest opportunity in a box provided for that purpose. At 3 P. M. on Friday, January 30, Mr. A. N. Johnson, Chief Engineer Illinois Highway Commission, will answer the questions personally or secure some one who will.

PROMPTNESS

Every effort will be made to carry out the program as printed. Students are urged to be in their places before the time set for an exercise to begin. Speakers are expected to confine themselves to the allotted time.

DEMONSTRATION OF GAS ENGINES

Gasoline and kerosene engines are much used in road and bridge work to drive pumps, concrete mixers, hoisting apparatus, road rollers, tractors, etc. ; and consequently it is important that the road engineer and road inspector should know something about the management of such motors, which are usually· briefly referred to as gas engines. Therefore, attention is cal}ed to the lectures and demonstrations on the gas engine by the Department of Farm Mechanics in connection with the sessions of the Corn Growers' and Stockmen's Convention, at the Farm Mechanics Building, on the South Campus, at the south end of Mathews Avenue. These lectures and demonstrations are open to those attending the Short Course in Highway Engineering. The program is as follows :

FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, I :30-3 :30. Gas Engines-Theory of Operation, batteries, make-and-break ignition.

MoNDAY, JANUARY 26, I :3o-3 :30. Gas Engines-Selection and operation.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, I :30-3:30. Gas Engines-Jump-spark ignition, wiring diagra,ms, magnetos.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, I :30-3:30. Gas Engines-Fuel and carburetion.

FRIDAY, JANU~RY 30, I :30-3:30. The Coi·n-Belt Tractor . .
